What a place, so moving to stsnd St on the spot were on the 1st July 1916 the Pals Bittalions went over the top, it is chillingvto see the distance that they were expected to take, knowing that the German Machine Guns were waiting for them. This is a must see, and by visiting this site and others, in some way these mens lives live on as we remember there sacrifice.

Beautiful memorial to the Accrington and Barnsley pals battalions cut down on the first day of the Somme. HOWEVER....we attempted to drive up the dirt track that is signposted as access to the site in our small van. Near the top of the lane we encountered who we assume to be the landowner in a Dacia car, who blocked the path and forced us agressively to reverse back down to the main road. The sign at the bottom of the farm track prohibits coach access but advises parking outside serre road no1 cemetery. To a first time visitor it isn't clear that this is on the main road and not somewhere up the track. The sign doesn't explicitly prohibit access by car.It would appear that the landowner is actively trying to restrict vehicular access to this site. I've been told by locals that his behaviour has been the subject of newspaper articles and that he thinks it's funny. I called the foreign office but they weren't interested.

Amazing to see the remains of shell holes and trenches and to look up no man's land towards where the German positions were. Very humbling. Also odd to see a Sheffield City council sign so far away from home. Humbling experience.

Magnificent quiet place surrounded by nature.

Beautifully kept memorial containing excellent information about the British positions in this area of the Somme battlefields. Well done to Sheffield City Council for recognising the importance of this site.

Accrington Pals memorial built out of the famous NORI bricks.

Very well maintained and moving cemeteries and memorial wood. Be advised the local farmer doesn’t like people driving up the farm track to the wood and he’s NOT polite about it.
