Roswell, NM is a favorite stopping point for travelers searching for aliens, bats, migratory birds, and caves. This writer came for baseball at the New Mexico Military Institute. And, as I typically do, I searched out the best local barbecue flavors. La Sierra Mesquite Smoked Bbq warmed this Texan's heart. Housed in a converted drive-in diner, La Sierra's hosts are kind and welcoming. I enjoyed the eclectic bbq-themed decor and down-home atmosphere. But the star of the show was the mesquite smoked meats. The brisket had a nice characteristic mesquite 'bite' of flavor in the crust and needed no sauce. Very tender and colorful. The large (silver-dollar diameter) smoked sausages were mild but carried the smoke flavor throughout the entire profile of the meat. Perhaps the best surprise was pork. This was one of the most consistent and tender pork butts I have ever tasted. As for sides, the potato salad was excellent (even though I am not normally a fan of celery in the dish). Mac n cheese was thick, warm, and comforting. I added a little barbecue sauce to the ranch beans and they were perfect. Barbecue Unchained is pleased to recommend La Sierra Mesquite Smoked BBQ to anyone visiting southeastern New Mexico.

This bbq was awful. The meat was dry and tough, the sides were bland, the cornbread was stale. Usually you can save any bbq meal with a good bbq sauce but their one and only sauce tasted horrible, unbalanced, and old. I haven’t been this disappointed with a dining experience in a long time. This was the worst bbq I’ve ever had.

It's a small restaurant located in an old Sonic building. You walk up to order and sit at one of the four tables available. It is nicely decorated and comfortable. It is very clean and inviting. Brisket is tender and juicy with great BBQ sauce. Their green chile Brisket sandwich is amazing. Staff, I believe were the owners, are friendly and courteous. They actually came out of the kitchen to check on us several times.

We LOVE this place. The owners are very sweet and the food is amazing. We travel from artesia for this BBQ, and are never disappointed. We have eat both in the restaurant and have done carry out. Both experiences were great

The brisket was just like good ole Texas mesquite smoked meet. It was tinder with great smoke flavor. The owner had the good Texan hospitality. I wish I lived closer to eat their more often.

This is the BEST BBQ I ever had and that’s considering 6 decades of BBQ dabbling. Tastes like pleasure, smells like blue ribbon, looks like a million dollars, meat just falls off the bone! This is the type of BBQ you would have flown-in!

Stopped in to get some BBQ since we had not seen much since leaving Texas. This is a very cute little place. Tidy and clean. We ordered brisket and ribs to get. Good portions, meaty. Ribs had a lot of meat on them and tender. A teeny bit dry by the time we got home to eat them but the bbq sauce was very good and the cherry cobbler was a good finish. Tasted like true Texas BBQ.
