Beautiful site, very historical and magical, on the Jordan river bordering with Israel. What a pity the mandatory tour guide, so-called David, ruined our experience starting with a late start, and was horrible, he obviously hated his job!! Only pointed things as what it was and no explanation, he spent more time and explained in the souvenir shop than the essential sites. The museum has no English explanation, and the guide sure didn’t add to it. He stayed outside. You have no choice if you want to see the site!!

It was absolutely amazing to actually see places from Bible stories. Truly inspiring. This site was close to the River Jordan and you could see how water would have flowed here although it is not a main part of the river now. The River is on the same grounds as is the church and monuments to represent how important this place is.

It’s undoubtedly the right point of the Baptismal site of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist. It’s a border line between Israel and Jordan and heavily guarded with military personnel on both sides. Crossing is absolutely illegal. Though you can’t do your symbolic or factual baptism here cos the water is dirty and suitable. That’s why a cross section of it was created by the bank of the flowing water from here to a cleaner point in Israel. Forget the color of the water, it’s a beautiful site and not just symbolic to the Christian faith but full of life to the essence of been dead to sin and risen with Christ. You sure would love it when you understand the scriptures and with the help of the Holy Spirit.

The place it great! Unfortunately you are not allowed to visit the churches and you are only able to go to the tourist route that is well maintained. The tour guides are not always very informative so ask questions if you want to know more. If you are planning to “touch the water” in the Jordan river make sure you have flip flops 🩴 , a swim suite/shorts 🩳 🩱 and a towel with you. The tour guide might tell you you are not allowed to swim but this is wrong. In this sacred place it is allowed to do it. Unless you are planning to swim to the other side of the small river. The overal explanation from the Jordanian side could be done better.

A very authentic feel. History right in front of you. Worth seeing, but not to go out of your way for it. Be sure not to wonder much... Active landmine zone.

Extremely Holy places for Christian community. Beautifully maintained natural environment. I’m HINDU not a Christian but I’m so happy with this place. From entrance they charge entrance fees including a bus ride ticket & guide.

This is also a must visit place. So historical. The staff there is great. Guide is recommended. Sole ticket is expensive so it is advised to get Jordan pass online. Take loads of pictures, and do take a dip in there too. It is really historic. Best time to visit are mornings and evenings. Their gift shop is a rip off. Dont buy from there. You can get same stuff from Amman.

Amazing place! You’ll be frustrated by the lack of water where jesus actually stood and got baptized, but what i found strange is standing on the border of the river, with Palestinian people just on the other side, and we spoke together. Surreal experience for a Lebanese like me.

This is such a privilege to visit this place. The is the place John the Baptist was baptizing people and where Jesus came to. When you arrive you can pay 12JD and every 30 min a bus will take you to the site. It is about a 45 minute trip with some decent amount of walking. You can get Baptised there if you have a priest or minister. Definitely worth visiting this place if you can.

No words to describe how the understanding and knowledge of the gentleman in charge. Getting to this location was easy from Amman is around an hour and 20 minute on R 40/R 40M just follow the sign to the Baptismal. Once we go at the entrance had a nice turkish coffee, you will need to leave your car at the parking lot, and take the bus to the river. You can also see the other side John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church St John the Baptist Monastery Elijahus Hill is on the way to the Baptismal site. Also visited St. John The Baptist Roman Church (Jordan River)

A great place to touch history, where John the Baptist baptised Jesus.

Great historical place. The tour guide is very educated and knowledgeable. It’s better to buy the ticket with the Jordan pass, it’s cheaper that way. Bus that takes you to the actual baptism site is every 30 minutes. You’re able to buy drinks and snacks on the site. Cash only.

Main guide was extremely rude and showed no patience nor emotional intelligence with people. First form of address was "do you have anyone Christian in your family? Go to the gift shop at the end of the tour". The whole visit features artificial rivers (plastic pipeline coming out of the dirt), uncollected trash along the walking path and bling. This site isn't part of the 3 main Jordan Pass tickets so be prepared to fork out 15 euro for a touristic trap when expecting to discover a holy place with a decently guided tour. The gift shop will sell you overpriced religious themed items in unsustainable black plastic bags (not to say rubbish bags). Church and museum were closed mid-week. The entire thing seems to have been privatised (how) and left to its own devices. On the whole an extremely dissatisfying experience. Never again.

The Baptismal Site of Jesus is a gorgeous location with a lot of history. You can definitely tell that this location has been made for tourism unfortunately, but regardless, this is another must visit in Jordan. I would recommend this place to my closest friends and family.

Costs 12JD to enter. You will need to take their shuttle bus to enter and there will be a guide who takes you around. The guide doesn't really explain the area, but only points out the spots. You will go to a few spots - a souvenir store, the River Jordan, the original site of the church, the church, a baptism spot, and a museum. I asked about baptism, and they said we will need to purchase a baptism robe for 14JD.

It's very interesting to be able to see with own eyes such a historical place! Be mindful that the visit will be done in a guided manner, which departs every 30 minute from the tourist centre. Also, you can see part of Jerico very close (like 40m away), and actually it's another country.

The entrance fee ain't that bad, being at 12JD for an European. If you take the bus, be prepared for crammed space and heat inside the vehicle. Overall nicely preserved historical place.

Really special place managed very poorly. The tours will start when they get at least 5 people, not at the time exposed at the webpage. The information regarding the place is minimum in English. Lastly the natural landscape has been so bitten for humans decisions that more than a river you will see a small creek

A long distance to get to this magical holy place Defenitly worth to visit and you will feel this religious aura as soon as you enter it's about an hour from Amman and there before the dead sea The people in charge are friendly, and they'll explain the tour in detail before you start it. The best time to visit before noon or afternoon due to the heat of the weather there is a bus to reach the place and there are maps at the ticket office and there is a tour guide accompanying the tour For about an hour the tour walked inside the place and the surprise is that the plunge pool is located on the Jordan River with beloved Palestine there is a gift shop to buy souvenirs and bless them in the christ's baptism place I must not forget the role of the Jordanian border guards and thank them for providing assistance and providing safety to us inside the place But I hope to take more care of the place due to its great religious historical value

The entry fee was 3 JODs for Jordanians and 12 JODs for foreigners, and included a bus trip to the store entrance and the accompaniment of a tour guide. The site is an important historical one and you can feel it once you enter it, with a number of different churches and one museum present throughout the area. I enjoyed seeing the baptismal site of Jesus and the new baptismal site in the river of Jordan which was made due to the river changing its path over the past 2000 years. This site is where holy water is taken from, to be blessed by the church and distributed throughout the world. The tour lasted for about 2.30 hrs including waiting for the bus to start. The tour guide did not share a lot of info so I would recommend reading about the site beforehand. Before leaving the site you may buy souvineers, holy water and other items of religious value.

It is indeed a historical location, the most probable location of many Biblical events like the crossing of the Jordan by the Israelites with Joshua, the crossing of the Jordan by Elisha, etc. A great place for holding water baptisms!

This is original site where Jesus was baptised by John The Baptist. It has been preserved in a good manner and all details are posted so that visitors can understand the whole scenario. During those times, River Jordan flowed here which is slightly east of current position of River Jordan. The pond of baptism is still there, which was probably a spring during John The Baptist times and eventually the river flowed through this place. To some people, this is the point where John The Baptist used to live. Later churches were built here. Pope also visited this place. So really this the place where Christianity started.

I’m not overly religious and I felt the power behind this site. The tour was great and follows the Jordan river to where Jesus was baptized. You can actually place your hand in the river and touch the very same water that he was baptized with. You can see people on the other side of the border sometimes conversing since that border remains closed for most people. Just a really cool experience overall.

The right place for all human beings to visit and get to know him because Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, glory be to Him, was baptized there by John before the beginning of his mission to save mankind from sin, because he was born without blemish and because he was from a spirit, born from a spirit and not from a body.. Alleluia

A must visit if you're in the Holy Land. I find that the beauty of this place is the fact that it did not transform into a sort of a Disneyland. Its somewhat disorganized character that makes this site more attractive.

To describe the experience as bad would an understatement. Guide let us wait an hour from 12:20 in the hot sun even though the schedule stated that there would be a tour starting at 12:30. When several people started complaining about it around 13:20, he began the tour. He dully rushed through everything and told us that we should refrain from taking pictures because there will be enough time to take them later. Well, there wasn't. Instead he urged us to hurry all the time and the only pauses he made were when he was offering to sell us outrageously overpriced religious paraphernalia at the souvenir shop. During our absence the bus driver has been smoking heavily inside the bus. It smelled disgusting. I was happy when I could finally leave.

This is an organized excursion with a bus leaving to the site every 30 min. Currently 12 JD for an adult, kids are free of charge. Bring cash as Visa machine doesn’t work. The whole tour takes about an hour and a half and consists of a visit to the site where Jesus was baptised, a small church and Jordan River. It’s a nice walk with few viewpoints.

(Translated by Google) I have been living in 🇯🇴 Jordan for 13 years, during this time for the first time I decided to visit the very famous tourist place Al Mahtas. At the first gate, no one stopped us, I went on my own with my husband, and when we got to the border guards, they explained to us that we needed to return and take a permit for the longest journey, or buy tickets and go by bus. We returned and bought tickets. A ticket for 1 person is 3 dinars, if you are a citizen of the country forgot to clarify for foreigners. We were told the bus leaves in half an hour. In the end, we sat for an hour and only then drove off. Naturally, there was a driver on the bus, a guide, and only me and my husband. The guide did not even meet and did not introduce himself. 🤔 When we went through the territory, I was not happy with this whole excursion, it was unbearably hot and you can't buy water anywhere. Nowhere is there a tap from which you can drink, no one warned that take water, there are no coffee shops or shops. We never heard any sensible story from the guide, only such phrases: this is the Jordan River, this is an artodic church, Jesus was baptized here, this is an old church and these are remnants of the Mazaic. 😭😭😭😭, I am a person who do not know history and do not really understand religion, I thought that after visiting this place I would have a new database of information about Christianity. And in the end, I began to ask the Russian nuns from the Israeli coast why they swim in the river and what is this use ?! And the Jordanian border guards forbade me to talk to them. So why the hell are you Jordanians taking money from me for a ticket if there is no service + not an opportunity for me to learn information from fellow compatriots on the Israeli side. I came to this place for information for my general development, but what did I get ?! Terrible service and wasted time. Guys, I didn't come to be photographed .... And in this I have 10 photos and zero information. And then you ask: why don't tourists come to Jordan ?! That is why. And those who have arrived will never return. I hope my cry from the heart reaches the workers.

We reached the ancient stairs via a demanding covered walkway. Here you can see the original water level next to the remains of Byzantine churches. Only here could we touch the water of the Jordan River. True, it still reminds me of a stream overgrown with reeds.

A very picturesque tourist centre and historical site, much changed from the days when Jesus walked there and now run to different standards of ideology. Christianity is sadly marginalised by commercialism and tourism.

It is neatly maintained, but they charge 12 JD to take you in a bus from visitor center to the spot and then make you walk a long way. Well, they could just allow cars to go till that spot and reduce the bus and walk. But I guess it's part of their tour experience.

It is not only a religious place but also with deep historic value. Besides the baptismal site of Jesus Christ, the Jordan river borders Israel and Jordan as indicated by the two different flying flags in the 1st pic which are just 10 meters apart with no border patrols that would allow tourist or even citizens of both sides to cross into the other side. The river is just waist deep that can be easily crossed. It seems that as respect to religion and history, both countries are more liberal in their immigration rules in this place.

It’s just too hot even in October. The worst part is that you are eaten by flies. They eat you like a buffet. If you are not religious, skip it. I’ve been to Bethlehem which is more interesting. The only good thing is the main gift shop at the end which has very good AC. The tour guide, what tour guide? He just said a few words and directed you to the gift shop.

Was a good experience. They only allow small groups at a time so it's not too busy. There's s bit of hanging around waiting for shuttle bus. It's worth it as there are no cars at the site. Not overdeveloped so it feels more authentic. There are soldiers guarding the border though.

(Translated by Google) More than 10 years ago, I was fortunate enough to enter the waters of the Jordan at Yardenit, Israel. In those years, to Qasr el-Yahud, which the Israelites consider the true place of the Lord's baptism, pilgrims were allowed once a year, to Baptism, and then in limited numbers. I'm not even talking about the traditional place of Epiphany on the Jordanian coast - El Makhtas. Getting there was unrealistic, beyond imagination, how to fly to the moon. And then in April 2019 I flew to Jordan. But even then I could not believe that I would get to El Makhtas. Public transport doesn’t go there, I don’t know how to drive a car, the language barrier does not allow finding out in detail from the locals how to get there, and time is running out. However, the Lord ruled, my friend and I were able to hire a taxi and go to Madaba, Mount Nebo and El Makhtas for 80 dinars. And here I am standing in the place where our Savior stood for 2000 years. I can imagine how He approached John the Baptist, and he said with surprise: “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” I can imagine how the sky opened up and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove, and a voice sounded from heaven: “This is My Beloved Son; in You I am well pleased! " And there is nothing that the Jordan River does not flow here now, it has moved 200 m, so that now there is only a puddle. This does not detract from the sanctity of the place. I look and cannot see enough. We approached the Jordan, along which the border passes. Opposite is Qasr el-Yahud. There, on the Israeli side, is full of pilgrims in white baptismal gowns. Soldiers with machine guns walk between them. In our group, no one dares to enter the Jordan. And the priests are not with us. I turn around and see the Jordanian priests baptizing the baby next to me in the font. Happy parents are standing nearby. The heart is overflowing with joy - there is one more Christian woman on earth.

Interesting place, particularly the bit down by where the river is now, where you can look across and watch the baptisms on the Israeli side. Was organized and well set up... The trail was covered... The various churches were interesting. The reason for the rating is that the site itself is a bit of a let down. Not sure that this hole near the Jordan River is THE spot; despite the guide's apocryphal evidence, I was not convinced.

A guide takes you there but it's worth seeing. Was cool to see where Jesus was baptized. At the end of the tour they take you to see the Jordan River. They have a section roped off for the Jordan side for baptism. On the other side is Israel and it has cameras and guards watching. On the Jordan side they had one guard. He was really fun to talk to. I highly recommend you go see it.

We visited here from the Movenpick Hotel at the Dead Sea. Awesome hotel by the way! The site of the Baptism was special to see and you can walk up to the Jordan river, dip a toe in and you are only about 20 yards from Israel where they are doing the same thing from the other side

As an avid traveler, I always enjoy venturing to historically significant sites with religious connotations, which is precisely what led me to visit this specific destination in Jordan. However, as a critic, I have to say that the steep price of 12 Jordanian dinars for the entry ticket is exorbitant, given the few things on display. Don't get me wrong; the place is fascinating, boasting an array of unique features that inevitably add to the area's religious centrality. However, for the price, visitors are left underwhelmed by what is on offer. Regardless of the obvious historical significance of the venue, one cannot help but feel a tad let down and unsatisfied at the end of the tour. Nonetheless, the site is worth visiting if you possess an earnest interest in historical and religious relics, such as those present here. If you are willing to pay the high entry ticket and navigate the crowds, you may gain a glimpse into the past and see some incredible artifacts that date back centuries. For enthusiasts of history and culture, this site is worth seeing if only once.

The Jordan side is very different than the Israeli site. You are required to take a paid tour which lasts 45 minutes. That means there is very little time to pray or be contemplative. It was interesting to learn that over the centuries the Jordan river has changed course and to see the actual spot where the baptism is thought to have happened.

Tour involves a bus from visitors centre to closer to the river, followed by a reasonable walk, they are placing shade over most of the walkway.

Very good site visit. I it's best to visit early or the afternoon tour. I went the last tour of the day and areas were closing for the day. The gifts shop has very nice souvenirs.

(Translated by Google) It is the place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist according to Christian beliefs. Bethany, where John the Baptist preached and baptized during the first period of his preaching. This information has been revealed as a result of archaeological excavations that have been carried out along the "Kharrar Valley" since 1996. The evidence contained in the Biblical text, the writings of Byzantine and medieval historians, as well as recent archaeological excavations, show that the site that was John the Baptist He preaches and baptizes in him, including the baptism of Jesus Christ at the hands of John the Baptist, located east of the Jordan River in the land known today as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Gospel of John (1: 28) speaks of “Bethany across the Jordan, where John the Baptist was baptizing,” and the phrase “across the Jordan” is referred to here on the east bank of the river. In a later reference to the same site on the east bank, the Gospel of John (40:10) says that Jesus Christ also traveled through the Jordan where John the Baptist was first baptizing and went again to the same place and dwelt there. During the recent excavations that took place in Jordan in 1997, a series of ancient sites were found associated with the site where John the Baptist was baptized and where Jesus Christ was baptized. This chain of sites is located along the Wadi Kharar, east of the Jordan River. A Byzantine monastery was discovered at the site of Tell Al-Kharrar, referred to as "Bethany across the Jordan," and this site is located about two kilometers (2.1 miles) east of the Jordan River at the beginning of Wadi Al Kharrar. There are several natural springs forming pools from which the flow of water begins to the Kharrar Valley, and ultimately flows into the Jordan River. As well as a pastoral oasis located at the beginning of Wadi al-Kharrar and the site of Tell al-Kharrar.

I always wanted to see this site. It was well preserved and a true holy place. The baptisms were ongoing, and all were welcome to witness the glory of faith.

Very clean and organized site in Jordan, believed to be the baptismal Site of Jesus. There is a pathway that winds you through the trees until you reach the Jordan River. Once you reach the river, you can access the water by walking down some steps and standing in the knee deep water to pray. A very special place.

It's one of those trips you have to make. I would propose that you read-up and get information before you visit the site. Our guide was so board doing this over and over that he was uninformative and there is so much history.

(Translated by Google) World Heritage Site on the Jordanian bank of the Jordan River where (it is believed) Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist; on the other side, Palestine. Nearby sites of archaeological interest and Orthodox churches are worth a visit. In reality, the river here is reduced to little more than a moat, but the atmosphere is mystical, even the less believers cannot fail to grasp it. However, a negative feeling accompanied me: Israeli soldiers a few meters from me on the occupied Palestinian shore. FREE PALESTINE

Located at the Jordanian-Israeli border and separated of Israel by the Jordan River, the place is amazingly beautiful and full of an ancient scent. As everyone knows, it is the heart of the three biggest religion in the world : Judaism, Christianism and Islam. A guide has lead the group to the site, offering accurate explanations, according to the Gospel, of the religious history of the place.

Beautiful and awe inspiring. What was really awesome was that we saw Palestinian and Israeli tourists literally 5 feet across from us in the Jordan river. The whole place was goose bump inducing.
