Massive and stunning. The Oval Plaza, dated to 110 AD, is an elongated, elliptical plaza (90m x 80m) framed by 56 Ionic columns and paved with limestone slabs. A good walkaround will aid the appreciation of the architectural magnificence of the ruins which have been well preserved

A must in Jordan trip. The square itself with the Ionic columns was built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD. The paving was done later and was very complex, because a 6 to 8 m high substructure had to be built to compensate for a depression. The oval shape is unique and was chosen to harmoniously connect two axes that meet at an angle: the newer one of the Roman Cardo (the long colonnaded street) with the axis of the older Sanctuary of Zeus.

The best preserved ancient ruins I have ever seen. Highly recommended for everyone keen on qncient times. Takes about 3 hrs to walk around and see everything. Get a local guide if you can- for the first hour- then you can go alone and explore.

A large open area full of old artifacts that are very well preserved. The square is about 90 meters in diameter which is very large for the time it was build. Imagine standing here during that time when it was all buzzing with people selling and trading. Must have been a sight in itself. Make sure you have time enough here since it will take a couple of hours to see all.

Oval Plaza. This must have been the main square and the hub of financial activities and shopping centre of the ancient roman city of Gerasa. The geometric symmetry of the oval as seen from the temple of Zeus is truly amazing. In its hay days it must have been buzzing with activity like a beehive !!

Oval Plaza One of the most impressive squares of antiquity. Leaving the visitor’s center, one of the first things we encountered was the Oval Plaza. This is an expansive public square, paved with intricate patterns of limestone and a border of columns. The sheer size makes it almost impossible to capture it's size in a photo! The symmetrical layout and size of the plaza itself was striking. Even after centuries of weathering, the limestone paving stones and columns still possess artful detailing that dazzled us modern visitors. We felt awed by the Oval Plaza and the glimpse it reveals into Jerash's past prominence and the architectural prowess of Roman city planning.

I was awestruck by the vastness of the open space and the well-preserved colonnades that adorned the area. The ambiance of history and the echoes of ancient gatherings made it a memorable and enriching experience

The centre-piece of the Jerash site and the most crowded spot here. It's a vast open plaza surrounded by tall columns in an oval shape. You can even see the marks of chariots and other things all around the paved stones.

Jerash is not just a historical place to visit.... Its a whole city including all services and elements at the time it was built. Streets, pavement, directions, gates, churches, fountains, bathrooms, Theaters, etc.... You stand Infront of a powerful Roman urbanism and Architecture as well as technical systems that were rare at that time. I meant here the seismic alarm existing in the hollow stone of the patio...Moreover, the sound pulses and the seating organization at the theaters is incredible.

Beautiful feeling to be standing at this oval plaza and look around yourself to see all the history around.

Wow, I can't believe it was under the sand, more than a meter deep... Only 7 columns were "fixed", the rest are all original structures!

The Oval Plaza of Jerash is one of the most iconic landmarks in this Decapolis city being its shape quite unique in the ancient world. The plaza was built during the first century AD. Upon arrival to the plaza from the South Street, look for the first few columns to the right for they have Greek inscriptions (see review image). The fountain in the center also has the eastern side carved likewise with another Greek inscription (see review image). You can also distinguish two water pipelines radiating north-wise and northwest of the fountain (see review image). You can get an splendid panoramic view of it from the Temple of Zeus above or from the hill to the East of the plaza. To start the climb to the Temple of Zeus, proceed by going up the stairs of its Propylaeum.

The oval plaza stands in the very heart of the ancient city. It reminded me of Vatican plaza. Fantastic place to explore!
