I
am
a
Viet
Nam
era
veteran
in
my
first
encounter
with
the
VA.
I
am
trying
to
determine
if
I
am
eligible
for
help
in
obtaining
hearing
aids.
I
have
called
the
main
number
at
the
Durham
VA
Clinic
five
times
and
been
referred
to
the
eligibility
office
each
time.
Each
time
I
have
tried
to
leave
a
message,
but
twice
I
was
told
that
their
mailbox
was
full.
Two
other
times
I've
been
promised
a
call
back
"within
one
business
day,"
which
never
happened.
Today
I
was
given
the
name
and
phone
number
of
a
supervisor,
but
his
phone
rang
without
being
answered,
either
by
an
answering
machine
or
a
supervisor.
Do
you
see
why
veterans
hate
the
VA?
I
finally
received
an
email
giving
the
requirements
for
hearing
aids,
but
it
was
written
in
medical
and
legal
terms
and
hard
for
the
layman
to
understand.
It
was
not
written
by
someone
who
cares
about
the
veteran
on
the
other
end.
Probably
somebody's
boss
said
"do
this"
and
they
did,
kinda.
Interestingly,
I
had
posted
the
very
same
question
on
the
VA
site
at
least
twice
before.
Once
they
told
me
I
needed
to
apply
for
benefits
and
they
were
sending
an
application,
which
never
came.
On
the
second
try,
my
post
was
ignored,
so
I
tried
calling
the
Durham
VA,
only
to
be
ignored.
On
the
third
try,
my
question
was
answered,
and
soon
I
will
figure
out
what
the
answer
meant.
I
know
this
agency
does
good
work
for
many
veterans,
but
to
me
it
is
still
an
embarrassment
to
my
country.
