Great bar. I didn't try the food but what I saw looked good. I wish they stocked more mainstream wines. The chardonnay I had was not the best and I didn't recognize one single wine brand. Drinks look amazing.

We had the most beautiful experience in this lovely restaurant. The ambiance was romantic and gorgeous and the server was very courteous. We had the four course meal which was $70. We started off with some very fresh tomato salads and hibachi. Second course consisted of soup. We all opted for fish as the third course and it was delicious and the portion size was pretty good. The dessert, pot du cream was simply delicious. Love the experience and the restaurant. The whole meal was a little over 2 hours. We will definitely come back when we are in the area.

Love this place! Great vibe, fantastic service, outstanding food! We went for Sunday Brunch and each meal was prepared beautifully. The Breakfast is definitely one of my favorites! It's definitely a great southern experience. A little pricey, but I'd say it's worth it! Also, it's a cute place if you want to take your kids because there's space right outside to play bocce ball or just hang out on the synthetic turf.

Great fine dining in the heart of midtown, Atlanta! Came here with friends and they kept talking about this place - now I see why. We had the 4 course tasting menu and it did not disappoint. The drinks were enticing, and that gave way to a slew of delicious dishes. The foie gras and hamaci tartare were excellent starters. The second course had a slew of seafood items - the octopus, calamari, and soup were highlights. Our entrees took a little longer to arrive but we're worth it. The duck and beef dishes in particular were very rich and quite well presented. Dessert was quite rich as well - the chocolate cake is definitely something to write home about. If price is an issue, don't let it be. The ability to savor all of these dishes definitely was something that left an impression on me as it relates to fine cuisine in Atlanta. Looking forward to coming next time !

So this was our 2nd visit to ESS but our 1st actual meal. The atmosphere is fantastic, upscale and classy yet casual and approachable. Not stuffy at all but not a flip flop and shorts atmosphere either. The 1st time we came there was a mishap in the kitchen and our order got lost in the shuffle. We were running late for a show so we had to get up and leave after only having drinks and our 1st course . Tonight we decided to give ESS a 2nd shot. We didnt want to rule it out over the 1st experience because it seemed so promising Our server, Pasquale, was fantastic. Polite and attentive but not hovering or intrusive. The cocktails we ordered (both times) were fantastic. Unique flavor profiles but familiar enough to hit all the notes you want . The amuse the 1st time was rillete on a cracker with everything bagel seasoning. A tasty Bite. This time it was a red pepper couli arrancini that hit all of the comfort-feels. The foie is always a pleaser. The 1st time with a dual apple puree (1 red wine and 1 white wine) the depth of flavors in the purees was phenomenal and sang with the foie. This time the strawberry compote was delightful, the balsamic gelle/reduction could've been a tad sweeter for my taste, and I wouldve prefered it if the foie was slightly tempered and easier to spread on the toast points. But all in all it was absolutely delicious. My partner had the beet & goat cheese salad and enjoyed it thoroughly. The pork belly with the grits and pickled onions was cooked perfectly. Nice textures. But the coca cola BBQ sauce on it was way too sweet and took away from the dish. The pickled red onions helped a bit but wasn't enough .... The farm egg over the crispy rice was BOMB awesome flavors and textures. A little heavy of a portion for a mid-course tasting menu it was difficult to finish because it was very heavy . The pork loin was extremely disappointing . The entire dish was lacking in seasoning. The bok choy was over grilled and the bulb was under cooked, the turnips was no seasoning at all, the pork loin was over cooked, under seasoned, and over charred. Unfortunately the jus wasnt enough to save it... maybe the cook had an off night, it happens. How.ev.er. the lamb dish.... wow. Flavorful, perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, amazing flavor profile and contrasting flavors and textures. This dish was the winner for sure. Dessert was good, limited menu but something for everyone. The buttermilk pie was surprisingly not as sweet as i thought it would be and i was so relieved. The mandarin coulis underneath was the perfect accompaniment. The blood orange segments and tuile seemed like an afterthought and werent necessary. The bourbon creme brulee had awesome flavor. The dish needed to be filled more and the sugar wasnt brulee'd evenly but the bourbon infused custard was absolutely perfect. Great wine list, awesome bourbon selection, fantastic cocktail list. Might come back a 3rd time and will update the review accordingly.

Empire State South was extremely disappointing and I would have given it 3.5 stars if possible. Everything just lacked any real flavor and was entirely too expensive for what we got. All of the dishes looked beautiful though. We ordered popcorn as a snackie because it’s not everyday you see that on a menu. It must be good, right? The molé it was tossed in provided little flavor and it didn’t taste like there was any salt, which continued to be a trend. Especially with the squash appetizer with the little flavor coming solely from the ricotta cheese. We wanted to order another appetizer but the disappointment in the first two dishes urged us to just move onto the entrees. Scallops for my wife and the strip steak for me. Again they were both good but lacked anything to make them really stand out for an acclaimed chef such as Hugh Acheson. At the end of the meal we were left unsatisfied with the flavors and our fill. Especially for the money. I would not recommend Empire State South if you are looking for any bold flavors.

Pros: They reserved an extra inside table for us when they saw the weather may not be good for eating outdoors. They gave us 2 free appetizers for my birthday. The ambiance was nice. Meat was cooked cooked properly. Pork Rillettes appetizer was very tasty. Wait staff was very friendly. Cons: most of the food was not good. We paid $46 for a 10oz Ribeye, at that price it better be absolutely delicious, it was mediocre at best, I could have cooked it on my grill. Although the wellness was perfect, the flavor was just bad. The side to this very expensive steak was a strange potato cake thing. It was a bunch of sliced potato pieces that had been stuck together into a square, robbed of all moisture, no seasoning and burnt on the bottom. Absolutely worst thing of the night. Then there is the shrimp and grits. The gravy on them was tasty but the shrimp were bad and tasted like metalic seawater ruining the whole dish. The burger and chicken sandwich were so-so, nothing to write home about. The french dip was probably the best of the night but still nothing amazing for a $$$ restaurant. We felt similarly about the staff's attire, extremely casual where you would expect on the street not in a restaurant that charges $46 for a bad steak. Over all I believe that exemplifies the air of the whole restaurant, extra basic at a high price.

For $100, this is honestly one of the best meals I've had in a while. 6 courses of goodness, all small portions but overall it's plenty of food to fill you up even if you're starving. The quality and presentation is top notch, and if I were in NYC or Chicago I'd expect to pay almost double for an identical experience, so hats off to you Atlanta for your stellar food scene.

It has been some years since I visited this Midtown stalwart. The pre fixe menu is pretty cool. I understand that it changes almost daily. 4 courses for $70 or 6 courses for $100. You can also select a wine pairing. I opted for the Tomato Salad, the Farm Egg and Crispy Rice along with the Trout for my entree and the Cherries for dessert. ALL of it was delectable!! Impressed by ESS' staying power. More impressed with the high quality service and the excellent meal we enjoyed. Cheers!

We had a wonderful meal! Starting with the chips and bread. Was a little worried about them, but boy they didn't disappoint! Chips were super fresh and crisp and the white BBQ to dip in was super tasty. Then the breads there a 3 they served and HUGE portions of each (cornbread, herbed focaccia, and a whole wheat sourdough). With the apple butter butter (yes its intentionally typed that way, I though the same think when it was described to me at the restaurant.). We had perfectly prepared steak. I mean steak house quality and perfection of cooking along with carrots. Wonderful! The blood oragne tart was a perfect end to the meal. The tart shell is a crispy buttery pecan crust, filled with white chocolate, and the blood orange on top. We also got a little sample of the creme fresh vanilla ice cream! Out of this world. Was very pleasantly surprised with the meal. Super friendly service to boot. My only complaint would be the drinks. Personally I feel they were too bitter, almost heavy on the bitter. I think its just my preference, if you like it this way then you are golden.

Went for pre-String Cheese Incident snacks. Got the green salad, beets and the farm egg. All three dishes tasted great and were incredibly fresh. The beets were earthy and the salad was vibrant. The farm egg weigh crispy rice was particularly outstanding, crunchy rice with mushrooms and the perfectly cooked egg.

Unique lemonade, a varied wine list, and crafted cocktails started our lunch with a blast! the starter jars were delicious - pimento cheese with bacon jam and fish mouse with mustard seeds were served with tasty bread. The super food entree featuring steak was very good with the steak perfectly cooked. The summer salad was also great with fresh blackberries and buttermilk curds. Lastly was the sea salt caramel ice cream. Our server was Tiffany and she was very helpful with the menu and was quite knowledgeable about wines. Parking is in the garage behind the restaurant and staff validates your ticket so bring it with you.

Wesley and Steven were amazing hosts to a mouth savoring 6-course meal (3-4oz portions/course). The wine pairing was spot on! I believe the 4-course comes with smaller portion sizes (2-3oz).

Our server, Allie, was delightful and knowledgeable. The menu is tight and provides interesting choices in each category. Try the chips with white bbq, and rotating preparation of the tagliatelle. The restaurant itself feels warm and vibrant with peacock blue walls and windows overlooking the heart of midtown. We had just finished moving in nearby and we plan to return regularly. Thank you to the whole team!

Excellent customer service. My husband's steak was tiny and not cooked to right temperature. It was not worth the money.. The trout was delicious. The Brownie is rich and the marshmallow was different.

My husband and I were in Atlanta over Thanksgiving and had an anniversary to celebrate. We didn't know when we made reservations that what they are offering these days is a four-course tasting menu with wine pairings. It was out of our normal price range for a restaurant meal, but is an anniversary is not worth a splurge then what is? We had a wonderful experience - food was fresh, well-prepared, and fancy enough to suit the occasion without being pretentious or fussy. We loved the sommelier. He was very low-key and sincere and also very knowledgeable and passionate about wine. The atmosphere was right on target as well. Even though we were sitting relatively close to other diners, it was quiet enough to have conversations with our 'indoor voices.' Great experience all around!

Favorite place to eat. Dinner, brunch, anytime they always have the BEST service and phenomenal food/drinks. We’ve been probably 6 times over the last couple of months (pandemic), and they have always made us feel super safe. The staff consistently wears masks, and do what they can to maintain the best safety and service. Love this place, it’s been our “covid-safe” haven! Overall we’ve found that every restaurant in the Ford fry group maintains this level of “covid-safe” service, and of course, amazing food.

Great restaurant! I got the Christmas Eve takeout for four and it was delicious. Arugula salad with apples and blue cheese, prime rib with bordelaise sauce, veggies, and toffee pudding for dessert. Chef Hugh makes carrots taste incredible.

Came with reservations for a party of two, four course dinner and had a great time! The wait staff was super attentive and friendly. I’d highly recommend getting the roasted duck breast for a delicious classic, and the wintergreen salad for a tasty surprise combination of flavors. The price for a four course dinner includes gratuity, so be mindful when looking into reservations. They also have a snack menu if you’d like to try delicious food on a budget!

I was really really impressed with Empire State South. I have quite a few food allergies and needed to avoid certain common cooking foods that were in every dish, and I was so worried I’d have to skip my friend’s dinner because of the restrictions. I called ahead and talked with the staff to see what they could do, and Lane took the time to talk to me beforehand and take down every single restriction. When I got there I just told them I was the one who called ahead. The food the chef made me was wonderful. I had sourdough bread and olive oil, a delicious butter leaf lettuce salad, and tilefish with roasted carrots. Every dish was exquisite. The people I dined with loved the jars and raved about the farm egg. It seems like you can’t go wrong with any dish at Empire State South.

Might be slightly overpriced but you won’t leave hungry, even with the 4 course. They gave arancini on the house that were amazing. Farm egg did not disappoint and the duck breast was great (best sweet potatoes I’ve ever had). Atmosphere makes it great for a nice dinner for a birthday or event

Look forward to returning post-COVID to experience an expanded menu.

Came here tonight for the first time. It did not disappoint. We were seated outside and the night could not have been more perfect. Beautiful weather, beautiful date(my wife lol), and delicious food and drink. We started off with drinks and a starter. Rosé for her, old fashion for me and pork rollette for us. The old fashion was a bit on the sweet side for an old fashion but still delicious. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy the pork rollette and pepper jelly. Perfect amount for a starter. From there we had our main course. Salmon for her and ribeye for me. Again, the portion size was perfect. The ribeye, a perfect medium rare, was so good. My wife loved her salmon as well. No complaints from us for sure. Oh- we also ordered a glass a cab to accompany our dinner. A modest $11/glass but it paired nicely with both the salmon and ribeye. For dessert there were two options - the apple pie and the pecan trifle. Naturally, we ordered both and shared. The apple pie reminded more of a turn over. The dough was nice and flaky and the filling sweet and warm. The trifle was the gold star winner for the night. Uh-maze-Ing. It was so good we ordered one to go! Overall first experience was beyond pleasant. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable of the menu, and took really good care of us. We’ll definitely be back!! Cheers

Solid brunch. Bloody Mary was pretty standard. Pimento jar with bacon marmalade and toast was out favorite app, the morning bun was tasty too. I had the steak and eggs with roasted root vegetables. Tasty but not mind-blowing. My husband had the sourdough pancakes with ricotta and apple which were very tasty. Loved the vibes on the patio. We might go back of we're in the area.

Bring your wallet and loose your appetite. Small portions, mediocre food. $30 for 4 oz of scallops and two pieces of coliflower. It's was a glorified french country atmosphere. Service was mid level too. Not impressed.

This is one of our go-to places for anniversary dinners. The food does not disappoint and the staff is well trained for quality service. The pimento cheese and toast is fantastic along with the crispy rice dish that seems to remain on the menu with some changes to the flavors. The menu seems to stem from options that are locally sourced and seasonal. Covid has brought the vibe down slightly, but the tables are spread out into the outdoor space. The bar is not open at this time; however, they have adapted to the times with takeout options. Masks are required throughout the current experience to keep the staff and guests safe. I look forward to returning to ESS.
