Tour was detailed by chronological events of ML King's life & greatly organized. Beginning with a 1.5 mile walk through hid neighborhood whisker it's still cool out, and ending at the magnificent visitors center/ memorial which iss air conditioned! Water is provided at a nice coffee shop, pictures are taken of individual groups, which will be emailed. Joy is extremely passionate and well - versed. There is much knowledge that she imparts on us. THANK YOU JOY.

Wonderful tour - it was a perfect day to be walking outside and Arielle was a fun guide. She did a great job of providing historical insight of the city. The food was yummy and there were some twists on some of the dishes that were very enjoyable! My husband has a dietary specific need and that was worked into the food stops for him, which was appreciated. We really enjoyed ourselves.

I don’t want to spoil too much about the food tour but it was definitely an awesome experience! Our tour guide was super nice and passionate and it was not only a foodie experience to taste different types of Atlanta food, but a history tour about how the city was founded and reconstructed through the history. Loving it!!

This tour was amazing! Our tour guides were Courtney and Kristen. They were attentive, passionate about their jobs, informative, and very friendly. I'm no history buff but I enjoyed every minute of the tour and all of the historical information they carefully shared with us. I appreciate that they also took pictures for us a long the way. I would recommend this tour to anyone. Great food, edutainment (education + entertainment), and great meeting new people! Book the tour!

1st off Jamie our guide was fun, knowledgeable and really personable. If you are black or were raised in the south most of the food (fried chicken, yums, grits, pulled pork, pork belly, ho cakes etc) on the tour won't be anything new to you. There are a few new foods that I will leave as a surprise for you. All the establishments provided nice small portions of great tasting foods and drinks and Jamie was right there with interesting facts that were on topic and made every place on and around the tour have significance that otherwise would have been lost to us. I highly recommend taking this tour and if possible with Jamie as your guide. My wife and I had a great time and will be taking one of the other tours in the future.

Amazing tour with Jay. One of the best story tellers I’ve ever met. I learnt so much in 2.5 hours with Jay on American history and the civil rights movement. Would definitely recommend.

An incredible experience for locals and visitors! We participated in the food and biscuit making tour, and Kristen was an incredible guide full of knowledge that she shared with us. What was so incredible is that not only did Kristen tell us about the history of the food we were tasting, but also about the history behind the small businesses themselves. The food portions were more than enough. I’m a big boy, and I was full and I had to pack my leftovers! Highly recommended for people of all ages.

My husband and I truly enjoyed the Grant Park Food and Cemetery Tour. What an amazing experience from start to finish. Leigh was a tour guide and was very knowledgeable and fun. We learned a lot about the history of ATL and got to try some awesome food along the way. Would recommend this tour to anyone coming to ATL.

Truly a joy. Friends were visiting Atlanta so we booked this tour having previously taken similar tour that ended in the Sweet Auburn Marketplace. This one was great and filling as well. Kristin, our guide was engaging and friendly and clearly knowledgeable about all which we talked. This time, the tour ended with a class in Southern Biscuit making which was fun and even more filling. I purchased a signed copy of the Culinary history of the South for our friends which they enjoyed the rest of their visit. I remain very happy with this company and will continue to bring my guests. Thanks for a great experience and for Kristin, our wonderful guide

My partner and I are from Memphis and this was our first time coming to Atlanta, as adults. We did the Historical Market Food Tour and biscuit class. Joy poured her knowledge into us and made it very personal and relatable to everyone in the tour. The food was great and it tasted even better knowing the history behind what we were eating and how it came about. Joy is the absolute best. We will come back for more tour sights with unexpected Atlanta. Thank you all for a wonderful experience and giving Raw, True and Authentic history.

I loved this tour. My husband took me for my birthday. It was raining but our tour guide Joy made everything fun and enjoyable. The food was great and the history of Atlanta is very interesting. Would definitely do a tour with them again.

What an amazing tour!! Courtney was absolutely wonderful and the entire group loved her. We could have listened to her tell stories all afternoon! Thanks for an unforgettable experience.

We booked the King Historic District walking tour. Our tour guide Emily was truly excellent. She did a fantastic job relaying stories about the history of the area and the people that lived there but in a realistic and honest way that didn't gloss over or sugarcoat the hard facts. The logistics of the tour were also very well done as booking was easy and directions on the time and meeting point clearly communicated. I would definitely use this company again and would specifically look for tours guided by Emily. Great experience!

You could tell Jaime loves what she does by her enthusiasm when talking about history. Her story telling makes you want to soak in all the historical "tea" so to speak. The food was utterly delicious from the moist catfish to super tasty cocktails that we had to order more. Plus, the perfect ending with a yummy cookie. Would 100% recommend family and friends to try this food tour out!

Our group had a completely wonderful experience this past Saturday. Kristin was informative, engaged with each member of the tour, gracious, and so charming. We are so appreciative of the tour and our superlative tour guide. This was our 1st tour w/Unexpected Atlanta, but won’t be our last!

My work place went on the King Historic District Tour and it was phenomenal! Joy and Arielle went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable (even in the GA heat), able to see and hear everything they were guiding us through, and answered all of our questions. Would 10/10 recommend this crew!

This tour was the highlight of our visit to Atlanta. We are sooo happy we did it, and Jen was a magnificent guide. She had a depth of knowledge that helped us better understand the importance of Atlanta in the civil rights movement. Jen was warm and charming and we will most definitely book a tour with her next time.

Great tour with Leigh. We did the MLK Jr walking tour. We learned so much about MLK’s roots and ties to Atlanta and how that fit in to the larger Civil Rights movement. Leigh was great at painting a picture of the time and answering all our questions. Would definitely recommend.

My husband and I took the Grant Park cemetery and Food tour. We did this as a couples "date" with some lovely friends of ours. The food was good, but our guide Arielle was really what made this tour fun. She is energetic, entertaining, and has interesting facts about not only the neighborhood, but all of Atlanta. The tour is an easy walk and leaves plenty of time for visiting with friends and making new ones. It's important to note that the company is very aware of dietary needs and restrictions. Arielle asked several times for food allergies and even provided non-alcoholic mocktails for the underage among our group. Thank you for a lovely day!

Joy's tour of Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta was exceptional. Her extensive knowledge and passion brought the landmarks to life, showcasing the profound impact of Dr. King. Joy's storytelling and inclusion created an engaging experience. She organized the tour meticulously, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable journey. I highly recommend Joy's tour for an inspiring and educational exploration.

Thoroughly enjoyed a highly educational MLK tour a few days ago.. Kristen, our guide, was knowledgeable, passionate and fun.. the walk itself was fairly easy, so you don't have to be in peak physical condition to do it.. Bonus tip.. check out Atlanta Breakfast Club Chicken & Waffles for brunch prior to your tour.. A great double act!

  • 5/5 Deana J. 8 months ago on Google
Really great tour! Not only an inspirational story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, but learning about those that came before him, and the amazing community he grew up in that helped mold him into the legend he was. Learning about the area was crucial. Paris + Zoe were phenomenal! They were so knowledgeable and just radiant of genuine positivity that their vibe really made the whole tour extra special. They showed incredible EQ as well with how to interact with each of us and what we needed. I can't recommend them enough.

Our Grant Park Food tour with Leigh was fantastic! She did an excellent job of weaving storytelling, humor, truth (including hard truths about history), and, of course, food, into her commentary to make Atlanta history come alive. She also helped us connect with the other guests on the tour and kept us comfortable, entertained, and well-fed. My husband and I had our two children with us, and they had a great time, too. My 11-year-old son said Leigh made history “interesting, fun, and engaging,” and “the restaurants were great, too.”

This tour was educational and enjoyable! Kristen did a wonderful job in her story telling and explanations on the significance of each stop throughout the tour. She ensured everyone on the tour was comfortable and I appreciated her ice breaker at the beginning. I loved that she was an Atlanta native! She was friendly, outgoing, knowledgeable and personable! My husband and I enjoyed ourselves and will definitely book again through Unexpected Atlanta Walking Tours.

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour Arielle provided. She has great energy and is friendly. The way the tour was arranged gave such a better understanding of how MLK came to be the great man he was.

My husband and I did this tour for our 2nd wedding anniversary, and let me tell you, it exceeded our expectations! I used to work close to the Sweet Auburn market and would go there occasionally, so my expectations were not super high, but OMG, was I wrong. I loved hearing about the Municipal market's history, food history, and how it influenced what we eat today. I loved our tour guide, Kirstin, who has the most beautiful voice, and she was so knowledgeable! Everything we asked, she knew! The food stops were great, and we ate food I loved, and I wouldn't have experienced if it wasn't for the tour. We had dinner plans but had to cancel because we were so full afterward. The biscuit-making portion of the tour was incredible, and it gave me the confidence that I could indeed make my own biscuits (and truth be told, I can burn water). The cooking was also such a great bonding experience with a room full of strangers, now friends. I can't recommend this tour enough!

I never knew what a significant place Atlanta was for the civil rights movement until today. This walking tour is an absolute must do, and a really humbling reminder not to take one's freedom and privilege for granted. Thank you Zoe for the education and the entertainment!

I did the walking tour of the King Historic District with Arielle. I highly recommend it . Arielle was very knowledgeable, engaging, and entertaining. She was great at answering questions. The tour was a great overview of the history of the neighborhood related to not just MLK Jr., but other notable people of the neighborhood and Atlanta’s role in the civil rights movement. The walking tour experience really brought the historical people and institutions of the neighborhood to life in a way that just visiting a museum would not have.

Our group was the first to experience The Historic Market and Biscuit Making tour. Our very entertaining and theatrical guide Kristin was absolutely amazing. The way she wove all the stories of breaking making across cultures ans continents and the meals we sampled made for an absolutely fantastic tour..even though everyone in the group has been to Atlanta before and one person lived there!! The market is an absolute gem in the Sweet Auburn district and Kristin was clearly a partner of the market as we met the owners, samples amazing cultural dishes and eventually was successfully guided through our own pan of biscuits per person! Best 2hrs and great lunch all in the hugs of the market with the most gracious vendors and patrons.

Let me just say that our guide, Margaret, was a dream! She was so knowledgeable, personable, and is great at her job (5 stars for her). Overall, I had a great experience with the Downtown Southern food walk. The portions were just right. The company was good. We were able to learn more about MLK and some downtown history. The reason why I am giving 4 stars (out of 5) is because I felt like there could have been more restaurants. Half of the stops were at the Sweet Auburn Market-- however cool it may have been, I would have liked to have tasted different atmospheres (if that makes sense?). Also, not having a ride back sucks. A little tip if you're walking back to the starting point: stick to the provided map (the way you came). A homeless man had to direct us to turn around as, allegedly, we were about to walk into a drug area.

We had a wonderful time on this food tour. Our tour guide, Kristin, was great - knowledgeable, fun, and personable. The food we sampled was delicious. So much so that we returned to one of the restaurants the next day for lunch to try more of their fare. Kristin's guided tour through Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery was very interesting and informative on a rich, unique, and fascinating part of Atlanta history. Kristin also helped us afterwards by recommending other places of interest to visit during our stay. In short, great food, great tour, great guide, great time!

Joy was, indeed, just that - a JOY to tour with! My best friend from CA wanted to do something memorable before heading back home and she, we both, thoroughly enjoyed our tour! Because of our experience with Joy, I am planning to take more tours of the metro Atlanta area (I'm a native of Brooklyn, NY). Joy was extremely knowledgeable. I was fascinated by the information she shared and realized how much of my African American history I needed to fuether study. I appreciate Joy for the information she shared as well as her ability to make the tour so enjoyable. My friend mentioned, again today, just how much she enjoyed it and thought Joy was such a delightful person. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Wendi J. Robinson

We LOVED our tour!! Our tour guide Kennedy was knowledgeable about the entire Grant Park and Oakland area and answered every question we had. She also made sure all of our food allergy’s were handled and I had no problems with any of the restaurants on the tour.

We were gifted the Unexpected Atlanta’s Grant Park Past + Future Food Walk and what a great gift! We loved every minute of it, partly in thanks to our fun, bubbly and knowledgeable guide, Kennedy. We loved the food, touring through Oakland Cemetery and learning so much about the history of Atlanta. These are two and a half hours that will fly by!

I can not tell you how much our group enjoyed the walking food/ history tour. Our guide, Ariel was fabulous! She was a wealth of knowledge, entertaining and such a pleasure. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS! What a wonderful way to experience Atlanta. I only wish we had done the tour at the beginning of our stay. Ariel had so many tips for where to go and what to do in Atlanta! 10+

This is an excellent tour even if you are not able to go into the buildings due to COVID restrictions. Our guide, Emily, was a master storyteller. Her delivery was both informative and entertaining. She didn't just present dry historic facts. She wove them into a story. She did an excellent job of connecting things that happened in the past and elsewhere in the country to things happening now and to the places she was showing us in Atlanta. She was a wealth of information and happy to make recommendations for places to eat and things to do. We highly recommend this tour.

I went on this tour with my father and sister. The food was all amazing and our tour guide Arielle was wonderful! I especially loved how we got to hear and see the history of the cities over the years. The interactive experience was fun and different! The only thing I wished would have been a little different was if they could have split up the tastings over even 4-6 places instead of concentrated in 3 restaurants. Additionally, it would have been great to go to Grant Park itself and hear about it's history. Overall, it was a wonderful experience though!

  • 5/5 Devon H. 2 years ago on Google
Emily was an AMAZING tour guide! I had family and friends in town for my graduation and wanted to do an activity relating to Atlanta history. We are so happy we booked this tour! It was entertaining, educational and so fun to learn cool history about Atlanta. All seven of us were raving about the tour all day after we left. Highly recommended!!

I was excited to take the Atlanta King tour with Emily. Mann she really gave a quality walk for our group, others came up and listened to her because she was so passionate, and my baby girl got all of her questions answered and we walked away feeling more knowledgeable and encouraged that Dr. Kings journey continues through us... Even if you’re from the area check it out, and see don’t you grow in your power and knowledge.. A walking tour also help you see the historic are and all it have to offer 2 miles of power... Thanks

Jamie provided a fun and educational tour for the whole group! We especially enjoyed the fried okra and the pork belly toast and we even visited the Little Tart bakery again two days later before leaving town to return home. Thanks for a fun couple of hours!

This was such a good experience and value! Jamie was our tour guide and did an amazing job of talking through the history of Atlanta along with the history of the country while making it fun, engaging, and memorable. She was passionate, energetic, and very accommodating to everyone who was on the tour and handled a few curveballs thrown at her very well! The food was amazing. Very tasty and very filling. The walk is very short and you really don't notice it because there are plenty of breaks for more information about the city. I hope this company spreads to other cities and also makes their tour guides as awesome as ours was.

This Food Tour was AMAZING!!! Not only did you get to try some of the best food in Atlanta but you also got a very good history lesson. The walk was great, a very easy one! The Grant Park Food Walk could not have been a better experience! Margaret is a gifted host, historian, and tour guide. We sampled varied and delicious nouveau-Southern food and drink at locally owned restaurants that were masterfully chosen. The walking tour of the Grant Park neighborhood and the Oakland Cemetery was steeped in the early history of Atlanta and was interesting start to finish! Well done!

Our tour guide for the food walk, Kristin was phenomenal today. In addition to great food, her knowledge of the history of Atlanta, as a life-long local was a huge part of what made our tour so interesting. I would highly recommend the tour to anyone visiting Atlanta, and ask for Kristin!

I booked this tour as a surprise outing for my partner's birthday and it did not disappoint. Kennedy is an excellent tour guide and kept us really entertained while taking us around Grant Park, the cemetery, and some amazing food spots. We joined the Grant Park Food and History tour this past Sunday with Ariel and it was fantastic! We are localish (live a little OTP), but learned so much about the history of the area. Ariel was SO engaging and entertaining! She kept us curious about our surroundings and was super knowledgeable. You can tell she loves her work, and we soaked in the energy. I will absolutely be signing up for another tour, and recommend this tour to everyone. I believe in being a tourist in your own city, and this experience was the reason why! Thank you so much!!

What a fantastic experience! We are native Georgians and we learned so much on our tour! Jamie was superbly knowledgeable and entertaining. She kept our attention throughout the tour with her witty commentary. The food was fabulous, the historic sites were fascinating and the adventure was more than we expected. We have already recommended it to many of our friends. I would definitely repeat this tour.

Tourist? It's perfect. Long time local? It's perfect. Just moved to the area from the North and want to finally get out into the area and explore a bit? It's perfect! Arielle and Emily were friendly, informative, fun and tender to our small group as if we were extended family. The food was great -- you'd almost expect it to be mediocre but no, the spots and selections made many of us promise that we'd be back. Last but not least, it was much more cemetery than we expected... Which was perfect! Just a great, fun experience.

My wife and I have done food tours in various cities and they have all been great, but this one is just a notch better. Our guides Arielle and Emily were great and it was a great look into Atlanta's history. And the food was great!! We actually hung out at Six Feet Under and hade a couple of more cocktails speaking with locals. Well Done!!

I had a good time on the Unexpected Atlanta tour! We visited a lively marketplace with diverse restaurants. Our guide Joy W. shared interesting historical facts including MLK visiting. We got to try different dishes from three of the restaurants. Our group got hands-on and learned to make biscuits from scratch! It made the tour fun and gave us a delicious taste of Atlanta's history and food scene
