One of my favorite hikes. Most of the workout consists of your full body into play which is great. There are lots of rocks to jump onto and to climb onto. I see why they call it Billy "Goat." The trail is along the Potomac river- it was great views. This is definitely worth your while. There are plenty of parking. I recommend bringing water or snacks.

This is a difficult trail along the Potomac River with great views. It’s mostly one way, but some folk still enter from the Anglers Parking lot direction, but it wasn’t too bad over all. There are definitely parts that require full body engagement. I walked the other trails there as well and those were nice and chill. It costs $20 to park a car, $10 to enter with a bike. Will definitely get the National Parks Pass next year, which is $80 and grants entry into any park. You can also get free entry if you have military ID or veteran ID. Dogs aren’t allowed on the Billy Goat Trail, but they are allowed on the tow path and the regular trails. The tow paths and regular trails would be good for runs.

This is in the Virginia side of the great falls. There is a $20 entry fee into this park. There is plenty of parking and clean restrooms. There are plenty of people biking. We did the part A of the trail. It’s not easy at all. You have to climb some rocks along the way and it take roughly 1.5-2 hours. The whole loop might take 3-4 hours. The view of the falls is great. Don’t miss it. Pets are not allowed in the trail path. There were good amount of people doing the hike.

The trail has it all. With the most popular trail A entrance near the historic great falls tavern and visitor’s center. The views are breathtaking. Whether over the weekend, when many will be on the path or off-peak when you might be one of the few, it is certainly worth the adventure. Considered moderate, it does require some basic level of fitness, proper trail walking attire, and avoid hot summer days as heat stroke is something to be aware off. Bring water, sense of adventure, and enjoy!

My favorite accessible trail the DC/VA area. 3 different Sections which are trail that branch off of a main towpath that’s fairly short. The towpath is flat, so great for a leisure walk, biking, or running. The sections vary in difficulty and length. If you’re looking for a challenge, Section A is for you. There are a couple rock scrambles and a rock wall you’ll have to scale up. There also aren’t any shortage of views, whether you’re on the towpath or one of the trails! The weekends get really busy, so if you can, try to go on a weekday. Be sure to check their website before you go to make sure the section you want to do isn’t closed.

A very challenging hike not for the faint of heart. There is quite a lot of rock scappering required. The views are amazing and the diversity of flora and fauna is stunning.

One of the most fun hiking trails in the DC area. It has some easy scrambles, but nothing particularly dangerous. Gorgeous views of the Potomac that are worth it in every season. NOTE - the trail is one-way north-south, and dogs are prohibited on Section A because of the challenging terrain. Every time I hike here I see people breaking these rules. Please follow them as they're for everyone's safety and not arbitrary.

One of the most fun trails that I have been on. There are quite a few stints that involves exclusively scrambling huge rocks, and even one rock wall to scale up that is a bit challenging, so make sure you wear good shoes for hiking. Also be sure to follow the blue markers as it is quite easy to get lost.

This is where section A starts. No 5G along the trail only section near the end some signal. Free parking about 40-60 spots. About 30 mins from parking to this spot. On Oct 8, 2023, about 65 F long sleeve is needed if it is windy wear hoody shorts might be cold. If only for section A no need bring anything it only takes about 2 hours to complete. Ok to bring camera, no much steep climb. Some small flower along the way not too much, mushrooms as well very few. Do found a walnut tree, you can come in Sep when walnut can be harvested. There are several spot you can get down to/near the river, water is not that clean. Also some large flat area can be used for rest or lunch/snack. Those are mid or near the end. Pets are not allow in section A but allowed along the entrance, you can also bike there. Road is wide for about 2-3 bikes. You can come after some rainy day and you will see huge amount of water which is a different kind of scene. From entrance to exit it is one way traffic and not pets, but do see a few people and dog going in reverse direction, whole thing would take about 90 mins if no rest no pic taken. From parking to parking would take about 2 hours if no stops. Whole trail is covered for most parts, better to bring a second set of cloth as yours will be wet.

Very accessible (close to DC) and a lot of trail options for everyone's level. There are flat trails for easy walking and bike riding, or a lot of rock scrambling if you like that challenge. Restrooms at the entrance, and incredible views of the Potomac River.

This hike was so much fun. I felt like a little kid climbing over all the rocks, and the views were great from up top looking down at the Potomac. We saw a kayaker fight his way up river against the rapids, and rock climbers on the Virginia side setting up to belay. We also saw wildlife along the hike: herons, lizards, fish. Despite the signage this is not a difficult trail. It is only 2.2 miles, with only the first mile having a lot of rock climbing. All of which is lateral more than vertical. There is a half way point where you can go back to the main tow path. so you can skip the more strenuous rocks and just do the latter half of the hike, or you can do the first half on the rocks and then go back to the tow path. The second half is pretty out in the open and flatter. Be aware they have to tote people out from here due to heat exhaustion in the summer because of the lack of tree coverage. It is well walked and popular so you wont get lost. No trash when I went, and the park rangers were helpful in giving us information prior to the hike.

We all had so much fun on this trail. It's challenging but even young kids can do it (over 6) with parents help. We scrambled through rocks, had great views of the Potomac and saw beautiful flowers, especially fields of Virginia Bluebells.
