McLachlan Monument

Tourist attraction Historical landmark

👍👍 Possibly one of the best hidden sunset spots you will ever find in Auckland. Sitting on the monument the sunset lines up perfectly between the trees and you are subject to absolute heaven of a sunset with no one else around you but nature and birds. Enjoy. People often mention walk, views,

20 minutes walk return great views from the top A one hundred years old piece of concrete with some writing on it. Pretty good view of manukau harbour. Okay place for a picnic lunch. Bit of steep uphill slog from the car park but footing is good. While you are out that way you can visit a few places of natural beauty like the Cornwallis lookout. Care is required when driving as the roads narrow and bendy

Awesome stroll up to watch the sunset. At this time of year the sun is in the perfect spot to view the setting sun through the trees towards Whatipu (about 8.35pm). Also perfect for sunrise (about 6.35am) as its clear of the Eastern trees.

Cool little spot that makes for a good Sunday drive. Short walk to the summit and your rewarded with great views. Be sure to stop at the dam on your way there.

Nice walk up to an interesting monument with good views over the Manukau harbour. Walk is through a nice bushy area & the hill isn't too steep. The walk down to Daniel Bay Beach though is rough & muddy. Probably better in summer.

Like most look outs/memorials....bush is over grown, views have been ruined because of it, which in turns ruins the peace, the tranquility and the serenity. And up until I read the plaques, I had always thought that this was the memorial to the Orpheus. But turns out that is a plague less than half the size of one of the ones here, and is in the Huia Settles Museum; Which is only open on weekends from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. Ionic how private land, which gets gifted to the city of Auckland, in memory of a family member, gets a more prominent and recognizable memorial, than the worst ship wreck to occur in NZ waters. -- 189 lives lost, some of which were barely 12, 164 years ago.
