I've visited this museum around 10+ years ago and on my visit today it felt like there was more to see before. Definitely lots of things changed, some exhibitions became computerised, which to me is a bit sad, but inevitable with time and progress. Other things were greatly improved and made the museum look awesome. I'd like to see more on level 1 (the world), things that relate to New Zealand and over all hope that the museum will only get better with time.

Beautiful place to visit located in the heart of Auckland. Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history, natural history, and military history. A great choice for families and friends. Free entry for NZ residents but tourists should pay for entry. Plenty of car parks. Highly recommended.

A place with lot to learn, from Maori history to world wars, from ancient animals to modern animals, volcanos, asian art, and many more. A very informative sections on various different topics. My favourite is the volcano section. Definitely try out the stimulation. There are activities for kids as well. I recommend going in the morning around the time they open, because if you really want to read through information and get to know things, it will take time.

Lovely museum. Had to look for a bit to park but that was due to a new exhibition on currently. Lots of interesting things for little ones and adults alike. Best time to go would be the afternoons as it tends to be a bit quieter.

Went to see Peter - fantastic to see an example up close. Overall the museum is a pretty good stop. Lines can be a little long, and some of the 'modern' exhibit styles struggle to present a cohesive narrative (why are these things here together?). But the majority of the exhibits are well put together and show a rich history with good background information.

Got be one of the best places to take your kids for some fun, history and culture. Hours of fun for them. Though these days I prefer to relax at the Cafe or out side while the older kids explore. That said I do visit the new displays and exhibits. The Greek one was fascinating.

I was very impressed with the Museum Each floor had many interesting Galaries. I loved the Dinosaurs. I enjoyed learning about volcanoes and earthquakes. I also learned about world War one and world War 2 how New Zealand was involved. There is also a small gallery on the Holocaust as well. See my many pictures and videos. I highly recommend to visit at least 4 hours at a minimum.

Auckland museum is pretty iconic. I’ve been visiting here since I was a kid on family holidays. In turn I’ve visited with my kids over holidays as well. Most recently we visited to see Peter the T-Rex. We arrived in the entrance where the skeleton was housed, so we managed to see him very quickly! But once we had done that we also looked around each floor and I. The various other exhibits. I like that there’s a lot of interactive displays, and things for all of the family. Things that are nostalgic or educational or just really interesting to see in a new light.

Absolutely awesome architecture. It's huge and certainly need 5-6hrs of your time to explore the entire museum. Staff were kind and helpful. There are many levels within the museum, dedicated to Māori culture and artifacts, exiting and extinct species, the natural history of New Zealand and the last level is reserved for the war memorial. They have exhibitions which are interactive and audio guides are available. Aucklanders get a free admission. Tickets are $28. The museum normally closes at 5.30 pm. There’s a cafe at the entrance and a museum shop of the left of the gate.

One of the best museums I’ve ever been to. The name is a bit misleading as the non-war exhibits were the real standout for me. The Maroi displays were great as was the Auckland life expo and the NZ photos. Allow yourself 3-4hours to get around and a bit more to see the botanics and walk up the bloody hills to get there.

It's a very educational and cultural area to visit, with plenty of proud historical sights to see. Every nook and cranny bears witness to Maori culture's rich legacy. There is also a section dedicated to animals. From dinosaurs to small insects, you can see how the animal kingdom has evolved. The butterfly segment is really appealing. When I get to Auckland, I'll be back there ♥️

I don't know how, but we got in here for free, went around, looked at stunning exhibitions, bought some souvenirs and left saying what an adventure! That's how interesting a museum has got to be. I also like how the mask mandate poster features Roman Emperor Nero!

I just LOVE this place. Not only is my Great Grandfather John Jeffree name featured but this iconic destinational place has so many memories for me. Today I had a business Brunch and got to see the incredible Tyrannosaurus Rex. The lunch was a T Rex Beef Rib. Heaven.

So after living in Auckland for 9 years, I decided to go to the museum . And guess what the entrance itself is quite grand and welcoming . I wanted to see the greek exhibition and it is what its been said …..ANCIENT. Its huge and certainly need your time . So if you are running short on it, dont waste money. Three different levels to explore and each level is designed in their own unique way. You certainly learn a lot about Maori heritage and culture. Food and little things like water and coffee are bit pricey . Its good to carry your own . Lot of parking . … DO EXPLORE THIS PLACE WITH KIDS . Thank me later ….

It's worth visiting! There's a lot you can learn, especially about the Maori culture. There's the part about volcanos and even an earthquake simulation. Cool! The entrance costs 20$ but if you take your water bill or something similar, it's free. Enjoy 😁

We had a few hours to kill before we had to head to the airport, and I wish we had more time here! Admission is FREE for Auckland residents and I believe there is a discount for New Zealand residents; international visitors have to pay but I was happy to do so and we got more than got our money's worth! Great place to spend the day and learn more about the history of Aotearoa and its people 😁

The Auckland War Memorial Museum is a must-visit attraction that immerses you in Auckland's rich history. I had the pleasure of exploring it on a rainy afternoon and discovered that it's free for Auckland residents, creating a vibrant atmosphere even in gloomy weather. The museum beautifully showcases Maori culture, offering an insightful journey into their traditions and heritage. While tickets may be slightly pricey for foreigners, the experience is undoubtedly worthwhile. If you're a museum lover, allocate more than four hours to fully appreciate the extensive exhibits. Prepare to be captivated by the fascinating stories and immerse yourself in Auckland's vibrant past at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Fantastic! The Trex exhibit of Peter and Barbs is amazing. Really enjoyed the sizing of them and the history surrounding the dinosaurs, also quite cool to see how small they were in comparison to the movies. Also, the amazing info of the volcanoes exhibit.. was great detail and interesting and interactive. Would recommend a day there definitely :)

The Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira (or simply the Auckland Museum) is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, and military history. The museum is also one of the most iconic Auckland buildings, constructed in the neo-classicist style, and sitting on a grassed plinth (the remains of a dormant volcano) in the Auckland Domain, a large public park close to the Auckland CBD. Auckland Museum's collections and exhibits began in 1852. In 1867 Aucklanders formed a learned society – the Auckland Philosophical Society, later the Auckland Institute. Within a few years the society merged with the museum and Auckland Institute and Museum was the organisation's name until 1996. Auckland War Memorial Museum was the name of the new building opened in 1929, but since 1996 was more commonly used for the institution as well. From 1991 to 2003 the museum's Māori-language name was Te Papa Whakahiku. Excerpt from Wikipedia

When our children were small, the Museum was a regular 'go to' for school holidays; that was about 15 years ago. Loved the new covered car park, ease of access to the main area. Lots of activities to explore, see & touch; great for kinesthetic/tactile learners. Now we have another generation & it was Miss 5's 1st official visit. Her Uncle created this as an experience birthday gift 🎁 & it sure was a hit. So much so, she flatly refused to leave, had a couple of tantrums & her Uncle ended up carrying her to the 🚗.

If you have a toddler or young kid I recommend taking them to the Atrium on the South side of the museum. They have a circular area that has light projections onto the carpet with a few seats around the edge. There's often kids running around. It's open and airy, with soft music/lights, and air conditioned/out of the sun. In the museum itself at the moment is a display on Auckland that has some nice projector displays for kids. There's also a permanent kid section and dinosaur section on one of the floors.

I really enjoyed this museum. It’s huge so plan to be there for at least a couple of hours. Take time to read the history of the Maori, look at all the exhibits and watch all the shows. It’s very educational. I also enjoyed the Maori haka dance. That was a lot of fun to watch!

I love our museum. It's an exceptional place. We went to look at the T Rex skeleton (black thanks to the mineral deposits on the bones) and hadn't been for such a long time took a wander up to the military floor. Just looking amazing. Nice one Auckland museum.

We haven’t been to the museum for years so thought we would pop in to have a look at the T-Rex and we’re pleasantly surprised. It was free entry to that part of the museum but we ended up buying an annual membership which gives you unlimited free access to any of the paid special exhibitions plus many other benefits. There are 2 awesome TRex on display and we spent a good hour just wandering around the lower level including the Stonehenge exhibition normally costs but being members it was free entry. Very interesting and informative. Great cafē too. We’ll be going back for sure - keen to explore the rest of the museum soon!! Highly recommend 👍🏻

Staff are always friendly and professional. It’s not just about history but also New Zealand culture and nature. My kids love this museum, not only there is a kid zone, but also volcanoes where they get to learn about the history of volcanic eruptions in NZ and experience a simulation of the eruption. There also different exhibitions throughout the year.

The name of this museum is absolutely not descriptive of their exhibits. Granted, we didn't have time to see the whole thing, but what we saw was very, very well done. It was very informative about the culture and original inhabitants of New Zealand, their arts and crafts and their way of life. I cannot describe the whole experience, but I will definitely visit again if I have a chance. Recommend it highly.

Absolutely LOVED the Auckland War Memorial Museum. I have a thousand pictures but there won’t be any fun if I share it here in advance, and you’ll always find something new each time of your visit. You will need to go and see it for yourself and immerse in the wonders. It’s amazing how the team and entire staffs, management, and the Government has been preserving, managing, and looking after the findings. So much of learning, just one trip of a day is not enough for me. It’s my favourite place in Auckland to visit with friends or even for a day out on my own. Go and check out the museum, it is Free of charge for residents of Auckland. You will need to bring an ID for proof. There’s no waiting time, staffs are attentive and helpful with a smile 😊

A must see if you are visiting Auckland. Don't get misled by the name, there are entire floors for the Aboriginal people in New Zealand and Polinician islands, and for the natural history of the region. I didn't even go to the 3rd level which is the war museum, that was not what I was after. In-fact this is the only place I come across where you can experience the heritage of the Maori people. The Maori villages I visited are just commercial tourist attractions, except for the nature.

The best museum to visit in New Zealand thanks to the Māori cultural performance. It started with a beautiful smile and welcome at the ticket counter. You have to do the Māori cultural performance. They were beyond amazing and what was said, taught, sung and performed was so emotional, inspiring, and spot on true. It is not a show, it is a glimpse into a way of life, and you are lucky if you get the chance to experience that.

The Auckland museum visit is something I will remember vividly forever. Planned on this random weekend as we were told there are dinosaurs' bones there, I knew my son would love it and cry tears of joy. So we did make the trip. The approach is easy, beautiful and the building is massive. But when we stepped in, in front of us stood two T-Rex skeletons in full scale. My son had to shut my jaw close. There was the Maori dance, Maori artifacts, war section, more dinosaurs section, other animals and the whole earthquake room. Mind-blowing. I'm sure I was the one to shed the tears of joy. Its great work done by the staff, the admin, the government to keep something massive thing running so well. If you guys have the chance do make it...

If u are a residence of Auckland, u are eligible for free entrance. Working holiday visa holders can also enjoy this benefit. Will be great if u can spend half day here exploring. Unfortunately the T-Rex fossil will be taken down for good from 11 Dec 2023 onwards. Might need to ask the museum management when will it be put back into display.

This is a HUGE place. When we went there, in February, 2020, the restaurant was under renovations, and we had to eat in a temporary area, but the food (snacks) was still good. We found the permanent and temporary exhibitions (one on Captain Cook's Polynesian interpreter, another on volcanoes) to be most impressive. The upstairs area is delightfully old-fashioned, with the stained-glass ceilings an echo of old-time museums. We paid extra for the Antarctica Virtual Reality (VR) Experience. There was some confusion as to where it was located; after taking the elevator/lift, we had no idea where to go, and no one was on hand to tell us. However, when we finally found the group, the experience was quite wonderful. We certainly felt like we were in Antarctica, in the helicopter, on the ice, etc.

We very much enjoyed a long afternoon at the Auckland Museum. As first time visitors to New Zealand, the extensive exhibit about Maori culture and the other related Polynesian cultures and their histories was fascinating and informative. An added bonus was the Maori Cultural Experience which included native performers presenting traditional songs, chants and dances. The second level of the museum contains the war memorial galleries involving the experiences of New Zealand in the First and Second World Wars. Having had a father who was involved in the war in the Pacific made it of special interest to us. Our feet gave out before our interest in this excellent museum. Great way to start our trip learning about the maori people and more. Loved learning the history and makes me appreciate being here on holiday.

(Translated by Google) Museum really great! Absolute recommendation. However, 3 years ago I was incinerated by a saleswoman in the souvenir shop. I bought 3 magnets with different prints. At one of them I found the penultimate one marked “Auckland” and bought it. When unpacking the Sovenirs later I noticed that the saleswoman had changed the magnet for the lower one. He reminds me of bad days in life that you get ripped off in wonderful places. Keep your eyes open when buying a magnet sign. Otherwise you have to keep thinking of this piggy saleswoman. (Original) Museum richtig toll ! Absolute Empfehlung.

A lovely place to visit. You can donate via your card for $4 if you wish. Really nice range of exhibitions on offer. The wildlife photography was really good and I'm glad the main photos sent an important message. Large bathroom facilities available and they were very clean. Lots of areas to sit down and just relax which was really helpful. The museum shop was really nice too, a great selection of items to purchase.

They have a Lego Millennium Falcon. I have a newer Lego Millennium Falcon so I'm better than the Auckland Museum. The museum is obviously still great though.

Went recently after not having visited since childhood (think 10-15 years) and while most was as I remember, with a couple of additions and losses (RIP wall bees), it's still a great place to hang out, learn, and grow the imagination. Sadly, during my visit, a lot of things were in the coming soon stage, and so I can't comment on them, but considering we've recently been in lockdown I fully understand it. Looking forward to returning to see it in it's full glory when those displays are finished.

Always worth a visit to this museum, and if you come at night you can enjoy the stunning backdrop for some epic photos. Parking is limited during the day, so use public transport or get in early...

Impressive, not only for Pete the TRex. Great NZ history and some things I wasn't aware of. Does our war heroes justice too. Think it's better than Te Papa (sorry Wgtn). Best free family entertainment.

Absolutely awesome. You can find many levels within the museum, dedicated to Māori culture, to local flora and fauna, exiting and extinct, and the last level is reserved for the war memorial. There is a permanent exhibition that is for free. Tickets are $28 (general) and for the special exhibition $25. The museum normally closes at 5.30 pm. On Tuesdays stays open till 8.30 pm. That day is late function. There’s a restaurant at the back and a cafe at the entrance. I must say the coffee I had in that coffee shop was absolutely delicious, professional barista style!

A wonderful museum and war memorial! Particularly enjoy all the amazing Māori and Pacific artifacts. What an amazing collection. I will definitely go back one more time before we leave New Zealand.

Strongly recommend to visit it with your young ones, apart from exhibitions of free entry for Aucklanders, like Maori and Pacific culture exhibition, plus two giant Dinosaurs, there's a special one on right now, An amazing and very informative fun exhibition- Egypt, in the time of Pharaoh. It really worths of the money and the time. We had to wait about an hour and half to get in, then spent an hour and half viewing the exhibition, and walked out in hurry due to the museum's closing their door!!

definitely worth for a day. it’s free for Auckland residents as long as you can proof that you’re living in Auckland. It’s so lucky to have these 2 T-Rex in the house, Peter and Barbara, not sure how long they’ll be staying in the museum. During the time I visit, the special exhibition theme is about Egypt. pay tribute to those soldiers. I came from Malaysia, without their help during ww2, Malaysia situation could be worst.

Went for the Egyptian Exhibition and totally love it! The gallery presents remarkable collection of artifacts abd relics from Ancient Egypt. The whole exhibition is thoughtfully curated, with detailed information to shed lights on various aspects of Egyptian life.

Definitely worth a visit! A whole day trip in the museum would be much more comfortable for viewing all the exhibits in all floors. Otherwise, you might need to miss some parts of the museum. You can know more about the WWI and WWII after visiting the dedicated 3rd floor. Apart from that, you can also get to visit the physical and human side of Aotearoa during the pioneering Polynesians ancestor.

I absolutely loved the museum. There are so many artefacts and history of Aotearoa and the pacific islands that you will not notice the time passing. There are Māori presentation during the day, so I recommend buying the ticket with the presentation included. Prepare to spend the day learning the rich history of New Zealand.

Out of all the museums I visited, this is one of the nicer ones. There are a lot of exhibits which I can all recommend. It's great fun to look at everything. Athmosphere is nice, climate is good, personnel is okay, prices are okay but especially free for students! Only a bit hard navigating. Get a map before entering. Can very much recommend.

Spectacular museum!! Plenty to see and do. We spent 4 hours there exploring and immersing ourselves in Maori Culture. The TRexs are not to be missed and we had fun with locating the AR dinos throughout the museum! Definitely worth the price of admission.

Recently, I visited the museum and it was really amazing "it was super rich in different arts, various culture (especially the NZ culture) exhibits and the ambiance that tell's us the story of the olden times." The place is huge and a bit crowded and they also have caffe & restaurants inside to enjoy a great meal after looking around. It was really a fun and exciting experience to visit Auckland War Memorial Museum, there is also a flower garden around the area that have lots of beautiful flowers. For sure I will be visiting again soon.🩷❤️

Well visiting this city, we had the museum high on our to-do list. What an amazing day to come here, see all of the exhibits, and learn so much about the country and the culture of the people. You cannot miss the opportunity to visit the museum!

I always love visiting the Auckland Museum. They seem to have great exhibits on constantly and the staff are very kind. As of now they have both Peter the black T. Rex and Barbara, one of the only confirmed female T. Rec specimens. Its an absolute sight to behold as you walk into the museum from the parnall entrance. They have incredible interactive rooms to entertain your kids such as the "Volcano room," and the "Bug and creature room." I always enjoy visiting the Maori exhibit room, it's a surreal feeling looking into Aotearoa's past, seeing the artifacts and genius of the Maori people is truly awesome. You can't help but feel amazed by the creativity and ingenuity displayed in the room. If you are planning on taking a trip to the museum I would highly recommend these places. Cafe is good but as expected, a bit pricey and often busy!

Great place to visit plenty to see, would have preferred to see more information about weapons over the years. The First World War exhibition was sanitized with little about injuries and effects on soldiers coming back. The top floor was saddest with lists of the dead, what a great loss to all.
