Great pub food. The Tuesday steak deal is an excellent value for money option. They also have other great deals available throughout the week. Service is good and they always seem to have a lot of customers.

Full disclosure, an American visiting New Zealand, reservations recommended. The Occidental has a certain charm that is unique. From the old building to the staff am hard pressed to put the charm down to a single thing. It is the collection of characters, beers, and menu that as a whole was more than enjoyable. We had the grilled Oysters app, the fries, the fish of the day (Salmon), Mussels and Linguini. For drinks a cocktails and beer flight. To round it out the Sticky Date Pudding for dessert. Everything was cooked to perfection. I thoroughly enjoyed the beer flight, such a great sampling of Belgium beers. Definitely a place I would return the next time I’m in Auckland.

Fun place to grab food and a drink. Service was quick and the staff was extremely friendly. We came in with a large group. If you do the same a reservation is highly recommended. I personally ordered the mussels, which is what they are known for. Delicious! Prices are good thanks to the current exchange rate.

This place is AMAZING!!! I've been here a few times and my bad for not writing a review earlier. The food is so incredibly YUM! This time I got the chicken schnitzel and it was out of this world. So juicy inside and crispy outside. The mussels are always a must, too. And the prices are super affordable with very generous portions. Plus, they were crazy busy and yet the service was so nice and the food and drinks came out so quickly. Our server, the girl with dark hair, cute bangs and glasses was such a sweetheart! Will definitely go back more often~

Good little traditional-ish pub to stop into. Some great pints on tap but the prices are a bit steep. Still, the staff are cool and there is indoor and outdoor seating - the big benches outside are lovely. I'll be back to try the food.

Love this venerable tavern that looks straight out of the 19th century! That made the visit worth it by itself. The beer selection was excellent, but know that they pride themselves on their selection of Belgian beers, and that’s mainly what’s on tap. We ordered the charcuterie board which was really tiny but yummy. Very popular place on cool Vulcan Lane.

Went for dinner here with two kids in tow. The waiter we had was excellent. Super friendly and helpful and really engaged with the kids. We had a steak order medium rare and it was really delicious and came as expected. The frites were more-ish and the steamed vegetables were great - broccoli, carrot and peas. My youngest enjoyed the garlic bread. We also got a charcuterie board which was perfect size to share. The tasting rack was decently sized, and although some of the taps were different they subbed similar beer styles and were happy to answer questions too. The hot chocolates were a huge hit.

It was an evening with office colleagues and loved this Belgian bar.Vintage decor and musical instruments 🎷created an era of the 1800's. We ordered beer🍺and red wine 🍷, fish n chips 🐟🍟, burger, prawns,Mac n cheese, pork shnitzel and a kg of mussels. Loved the ambience and food.Excellent service 👏 See you again🍔🍺🥯🍷🍤

Great food, excellent atmosphere and drinks selection, good place to go with your mates. Had the chicken schnitzel last time I went. Excellent gravy to go with it, chips were great and the schnitzel was lovely. Had a nice cider to go with it. Only issue was accidentally serving a friend sparkling water instead of lemonade but that was resolved quickly. Very satisfied.

Cool, cozy, and great steamed mussels. The potato fries complimented the mussels. They have lots of drinks available as well. The service is friendly and efficient.

We stayed 2 nights in Auckland and we went 2 times here. We ate and we tried their beer and it was great! Totally a place to visit. For oysters they need reservation. Also, if you want to eat insidez its recommended to have a reservation.

✈️If you’re an airline employee (flight attendant or pilot) for any airline, they give you a 10% discount on your entire bill!!!! Despite the discount, this is an absolute must visit in Auckland. We stopped by on a Tuesday evening around 4:30pm and it was PACKED! The entire time we were there, there was a constant stream of new guests coming into the pub. What an electric environment with great food, good drinks, and friendly staff. It located in the heart of Auckland’s City Centre and the street it’s located on is also very photogenic. There’s a mix of local business patrons and tourists. So much fun!

Have been visiting this delightful pub for many years. Great selection of Belgian beers and superb food. Busy with tourists and locals alike. Staff are very accommodating and friendly. Don’t miss their Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays specials! It’s a Belgian pub so go for their mussels! Huge NZ greenlip mussels are used. All their sauces are nice but I would recommend the creamy white wine or the lobster+brandy bisque. For their Angus rump, only one way to cook a rump - RARE! Unless you want a sore jaw. You can’t go wrong with anything that has mussels, beef and lamb.

Found this place by accident walking back to our hotel. Had a great schnitzel special for a Wednesday night, and the food being served around us looked pretty good too. An amazing range of beers as well. Service was amazing from the delightful Ellie, the waitress from Belgium. Cozy European style decor, a really nice find.

Met friends there for dinner. Place was very busy (always a good sign). Ordered the Fish Chowder and was able to get GF option too for the bread. Great presentation and taste. Really good dark ale followed.

Popular pub serving crafted beers and mussels and other pub grubs. Can get crowded during dinner time. Service was friendly and good. We were promptly seated and food was served quickly eventhough it looked like a busy night for them. I'll come try other food besides mussels next time.

A must-visit restaurant in Auckland! I love their mussels, it’s tender, fresh and juicy, sifferent flavours to choose. Steak, calamari n fries are also nice. One staff with long hair who is funny, friendly and cute, his charisma lights up the restaurant. Look forward to visiting again

This pub prides itself of the Belgian beers on tap and in bottles - and the selection is good. There is a lovely feel of an old style pub here. Change the menu, and beers and this place could be a classic Irish, or an old style Kiwi / Aussie pub - it just has that comfortable feel of a happy place to meet friends. The balance between punters talking noise and the ceiling height keeps the volume to that spot on balance that makes it an enjoyable place for conversations without getting too loud

This is THE place. Food is amazing. Drink selection is phenomenal. It does full up quickly so if you are planning to eat here for lunch or dinner it wouldn't hurt to reserve a table. We ate here three times during an 11 day stay. It's that good.

Very nice dinner at the occidental. Steamed and grilled green mussels are NZ special, so worth to try. Lamb pie was also tasty but no much difference from aussie or uk meat pies. Oysters are so so.

Cannot go past this place if you want good food, great service, impressive drinks menu, and superb atmosphere. Tourists and locals both enjoy this stalwart of Vulcan lane, for a unbeatable all day steak deal on Tuesdays, pre dinner drinks, post evening nightcap, and everything in between. Can’t write highly enough about this place 👍🏽

Came here on a Saturday to eat some mussels. They also sell oysters, but mussels were cheaper. Place has a nice vibe and great selections of drinks. Last order was at 8pm, so plan accordingly if you plan to eat and drink here.

Been here twice for lunch and had the kilo steamed mussels and the lamb pie. Both were so satisfying. I really need to make it back for another kilo of mussels before my vacation ends! The staff and atmosphere is also a pleasant time here.

Great food and great service is never taken lightly. Always had a great experience dining here. Love the casual atmosphere. Had the 1 Kilo Mussels, 500g Angus Rump Steak (medium), Belgian Sausages, Roast Lamb Shank, and the Chicken Vol Au Vent. All the food was exceptional. Great tasting and cooked to perfection. Left the place full and happy.

Very good Belgian Beer selection plus a regular selection for us boring types. Good food selection. I enjoyed a Belgian Chip Buttie. Lots of seats outside to watch the passing parade.

Not actually a big fan of seafood but I’d definitely recommend here for mussel lovers. I’ve evidenced by my wife visiting this place five times in two weeks. Satisfied with its size, taste and atmosphere. It’s perfect to enjoy meals and drinks. Personally, I tried a chunk of steak and it was quite nice too. I’ve seen this place for more than 20yrs and presumably the owner has a dignity on dishes served here. “Dignity reflects the popularity”

We had steamed mussels with lobster bisque sauce and rump steak. Mussels were amazing 5/5. The rump steak was big. We wanted it medium rare, but it was more like medium well-well done. We also loved cherry beer.

Food was fabulous! Prawns we're so flavourful, oysters were divine, mixed grilled mussels were yum. And the Candyfloss Martini was so yum I had two. Well priced with live music.

The Occidental has a wonderful ambience and is such a relaxing place to visit. I love the decor giving it a warm, welcoming, been there forever feel. The staff are superb and attentive. Such a great selection of food and beverages. A must visit every time we're in town.

I ordered the 500g rump with mushroom sauce, rare. The steak was cooked perfectly and you could just tell the chef cares. The waitress was very quick and helpful and I just love the atmosphere. I have been before and will always be coming back.

Love this bar! Awesome food with perfect songs. It's the best place to visit on Friday night. However, the white wine's price is over triple than the countdown. I know this is the survival way for a bar, next time I would like to have some more craft beer :)

Good food and good beer… Their mussels pots are delicious. Serve with the yummy French fries that make you can’t stop eating. The lobster bisque and blue cheese mussels are really gooooooood… Remember to make reservation before you come…!!

Best mussel dish ever! We really loved the creamy wine sauce with mussels. Spicy shrimp is nicely matched with the crunch bread. Outdoor sitting at night time is romantic.
