Based on recommendations, we had high hopes for Caretaker, but left before ordering due to very poor service. Cool space with customized craft cocktails, but was not in the mood to deal with a bad-attitude server who was flippant, patronizing and condescending. She totally ruined the whole vibe.

Worth seeking out - and yes, there is no signage outside, so you'll need someone to show you where it is or a good nose to seek it out. Service is great, and the vibe is chilled, comfortable, and you're a member of the coolest club in town just by finding it. No menu - Serving staff will give you a friendly q&a on your cocktail tastes, and then the bar staff will surprise you.... And they're virtually never wrong!

As the name of the venue suggests, the staff takes care of your orders pretty well as there's no set menu. They'll get you to go through a questionnaire to find out what kind of drink you'd like. Pretty impressie memory considering how many people they have to tend to and remember your order without a notepad, especially when you go for a second round. Place is very dim if you're into that mood lighting and it's a little loud but just enough that you can hear the other people in your booth.

Cosy. They will spend time working out what cocktail will suit you based on what you tell them you like. Both drinks I were given were great. Love that you can have a quite few drinks with friends or a date, an intimate environment.

This is a speciality cocktail bar. Hard to find as only a door at top of stairs with a 'C' on it. Google maps not much help. It one of the alley ways between Custom St and Britomart. Service is at your table or if you are lucky the couches. Staff will discuss what you like and don't like and then bar will create a unique cocktail. We met there as a group before dinner at a restaurant around Brittomart. We all had unique cocktails all delicious. I tasted all of them. Had a very good margarita myself. Salty and sour just as I like it.

This place is FANTASTIC!!!! If you're in the mood for cocktails, then this is the place for you. But if you're looking for a drinks list, you've gone to the wrong place. They come to your table, sit down and ask you questions on what you like in a drink. Then off they go to create you a drink based on what you said. The drinks they brought us were bloody fantastic. I highly recommend this place. We'll definitely be back to sample more drinks

Absolutely LOVE this bar!!! Perfect place for a date or night-cap after dinner. Dimly lit, delicious drinks made to order (literally order whatever you want and they’ll make it). It goes to show how popular it is when they have a wait-list often on weekend nights. The reason they do that, though, is because they keep a standard of not being overcrowded and everyone having their own space. Always visit when we’re in Auckland 💚

Best cocktail, late night lounge in Auckland - easy. The spot is not glaringly obvious to find, you will need to know the door to go to, but it’s not hard to find if you are looking for it, just don’t expect flashing signs. The staff are friendly and very helpful / informative of what to expect. The atmosphere and setting is low lit, intimate, well furnished and classy. Don’t expect a classic menu for you to scroll through, be prepared to describe what you want to the staff and let them work their magic!! If you’re going with a closed mind… I would just go to the tavern. When a jazz band is spotting in, it’s a great night all round. Highly recommend this spot, especially late night! It’s priced as you would expect for handcrafted cocktails but well worth it!

Amazing speak-easy style hole in the wall specializing in custom cocktails. You don't so much order here, as you do provide a vague idea of what you like and the staff will astound you with their vast and varied knowledge of cocktails and combinations. Very pleasant well presented staff, who can be a touch hard to wave down due to the lighting being rather dark, but otherwise very attentive. Perfect environment for a date but with the awesome live music volume it can be difficult to converse across a table at times. Well worth the visit even just to experience it once!

Great staff who clearly care about (and enjoy) what they do! Loved chatting shop with several Dans, owner Heather and a few other names that the passage of a wonderful evening has caused me to forget. Cocktails are obviously completely on point. All juices juiced in house, and I have no doubt that they'll be making all of their own infusions/bitters etc too. Vibe was rad, perfectly matched with the cocktail offerings. Perfect lighting. Fascinating place with great Jazz live. Interior is unpickable, great idea for a bar to be built underground with a vintage door, which gives time travel vibes. Staffs are great with their cocktail recommendations, however the waiters didn’t seem to know much about whiskeys. Absolutely best atmosphere for a little night out, highly recommended.

Custom cocktail bar that only make to taste. So I encourage you to look up some out of the box cocktail bases before you go. These guys are very good at taking a taste idea and blowing you out of the water with a wow factor. The food is bread and dip varieties all basic to get you by. I would generally go here before or after a dinner. Chilled environment easy speaking atmosphere. A fun night to be with a close friend or small group of no more than 6.

One of the most unique bars I've been to. There's no set menu, only custom drinks based on some questions they ask you. We sat at the high tops by the bar which was great because you could see the hard work the bartenders and servers put into making the drinks, and the bartender can personally explain their creation to you. You can tell they hire extremely talented, creative people who treat cocktails like a form of art. This is the kind of bar I'd bring friends to if I could only show them one bar in the city!

Hands down bourbon (African flower) I have ever had! Silky smooth! Customer service is second to none. I've found my favourite bar in NZ and I don't say this lightly

Caretaker is a hidden gem in Auckland! Located in an inconspicuous basement in the Britomart area of the CBD, it’s an awesome cocktail bar with a great, cozy atmosphere. I visited on a Saturday night with a coworker, and it was busy with pre-concert visitors. The bar manager, Milanda, served up personalized cocktails and 6 out of 6 were a hit for my group. I highly recommend visiting if you’re looking for excellent craft cocktails in Auckland!

This was a great find! The cocktails were awesome but the experience was even better. We enjoyed the waiters/bartenders creating a cocktail on our behalf based on our likes and dislikes. As an American, this place definitely passes the vibe check as a New York speakeasy.

This place is just pure gold! not only personalised cocktails but a personal service to Match. The Caretaker should write a book on Hospitality because it’s mastered it. Not too much not too little. Plenty of space inside to sit, but don’t leave it too long as it does fill up! Toilets nice and clean and plenty of room to move. Good spirit collection including some top notch whiskeys! Yet to try the food, but looks & sounds pretty good. 10/10

I was excited to try the Caretaker for the first time and am sad to say that I was really disappointed. After waiting an hour and a half for a table both my partner and I received drinks that were not at all what we had discussed with the bartender. The drink given to me was 100% Maraschino Cherry flavoured, not much else could be tasted. I was under the impression I would be receiving a refreshing citrus drink… The bartender who took our order never mentioned maraschino cherry. This was really strange because typically it is a hit or miss flavour. While I don’t mind Maraschino cherries as a garnish, I would never voluntarily order or drink a maraschino cherry flavoured cocktail. No one really checked in with us about our drinks, despite our efforts to try and get the staff over. My partner ended up drinking my cocktail because he didn’t mind it. When we went up to pay we tried to talk to the bartender about our drinks but she was very dismissive and didn’t give us any thought. Was not a great experience :( Best advice: triple check what you are getting and make sure there is no wiggle room!!

Amazing bar with a very friendly staff. Every drink is an adventure based on the flavors you're feeling or craving. Great peaches and I loved the spiced rum with apricot brandy.

It's also non-alcoholic friendly, the setting is very cosy with an incredible style and has staff with a ludicrous memory and wicked cocktail making skills, a true gem to take your friends or a date to!

The best cocktail place in Auckland! Secret spot for an amazing date night out. I love the approach of actually not having the menu and let the waiter to surprise you. Amazing service, super friendly and, indeed, they will "take care" of you here. Couple of times they had life music in the middle of the week. Favorite spot, I highly recommend this place.

This place is epic - it’s just a teeny bit hard to find but I think it’s meant to be that was as it feels very much like a classic Speakeasy! There is no menu- you go in and tell them what you’re feeling like drinking and then they craft up something just for you. I wish we had gotten to come here more than once! Truly a unique experience with amazing cocktails. Definitely a late night place or after dinner, not happy hour vibes, as it’s a bit dark.

This is the coolest place to get a drink in Auckland, we had the best time. Speakeasy vibes, great music, no menu - just say what you feel like/like and they’ll make something for you inspired by that. Very reasonably priced considering attention to detail and service you get too.

Went here alone to have a drinks on my birthday. Sadly, I arrived late, at about 2am in the morning when they closed at 3am. Only managed to order two drinks but maybe that is a blessing in disguise cause, the drinks almost knock me out. They served a pretty strong drinks here eiy? or maybe I'm just lightweight? Services are amazing, and thank you to all the staff for making me feel welcomed here. The atmosphere are chill and the vibe make it almost an exclusive underground stuff going on. Definitely will be back for more!

My go to Friday night location. Wonderful cocktail bar hidden beneath Custom's Street. The staff are enthusiastic and never fail to make a fantastic potion. Cocktails are made based on your preferences, with a satisfaction guarantee! Can get really busy, so often there's a bit of a wait, but they'll take your number and call you.

Hidden gem in auckland cbd ! very dark and which is very good vibes to date with someone highly recommend to date and the bartender is asking what type of drink you like and they just making for you very cool to having a chill night here :) and when i booked front of house the lady very sweet ever seen who work in bar! very gentle. All drinks are $23 each lil pricey but worth it !!

EDITED: Service the last time I was there was not as good as previous times, and my partner and weren't served until we approached someone, and then only served once in our 2 hours. Other tables were seen quickly though. This is a shame as other times I really enjoyed my visits, but as it was my partners first time it left a sour note with me. However, the staff at the front were nice enough to comp the one drink we did manage to get, and Heather reached out as well to get the feedback, and I do think they'll take this on board and work to improve and learn which is positive to see when businesses do listen and try to make the experience better. After the correspondence I would be willing to give it another go.

Very pleasantly surprised by this little underground gem. Superb spirits menu despite the obvious emphasis on mixed drinks. Superb service. They really take care of you. Price was reasonable and music was pretty varied. Something for everyone. NOTABLE: Found a very rare bourbon that's even difficult to find inside the US.

Such a lovely and amazing place. Love the atmosphere and everyone is so gentle and qualified in their jobs. Love it! Is a must if you are in Auckland and want to have a fantastic cocktail experience.
