Really surprised and impressed to find this gem in Kumeu. My husband and I have been traveling and working at wineries for the last 3 and a half years and we have rarely had such an amazing experience at a cellar door. Their wines are lovely all around, perhaps particularly appealing to our palates. We’re a bit picky with our Pinots but their Hawke’s Bay Pinot Noir was beautiful, full and well balanced. We were also impressed with the price point, I would expect to pay more for hand picked wine made with such care. Thank you Fiona for answering our questions and for the great tasting.

Some of the best chardonnay in NZ and indeed the world. The Mate's single vineyard is an unforgettable vinous experience. Staff knowledgeable and friendly.

Really good wines, love the wine tastings and ambience. Very friendly and always a family member of the vineyard around which makes the experience that much more unique and nice. Easy to access off the main highway too.

We drove straight from the Auckland airport to Kumeu River Winery. It takes around 40 minutes. This is a family owned winery, very welcoming and personal. The lady who conducted the tasting was really friendly, informative, and professional. Unfortunately, the bubbles and premium Chardonnay were not available for tasting, however we did taste two pinot noirs, 1 pinot gris, 1 rosé, and 2 Chardonnays. Cost for a tasting is $10 pp.

One of the best family producers in Kumeu. Amazing history, outstanding wines and insightful and informative staff. Their 2022 Estate Barrique fermented Chardonnay is definitely one of the best Chardonnays in the Auckland region. NZWINEPRO - Auckland Wine Tours is a tour company that can take you to this winery and they can also show you through the barrel room and production facility. Highly recommend them both.

Quite simply Kumeu River Mate's vineyard is the best Chardonnay in the world.

We had a really lovely visit! We did the standard tasting and the special estate Chardonnay tasting. The woman working there was so friendly and knowledgeable and gave us more excellent recommendations for the area. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn more and taste good wine from the Kumeu region.

Wine tasting: Our guide from Coast to Coast Tours, Peter-John, loves his country and said he is very glad that his country is open to tourism again. He was very professional and shared some of the history of New Zealand, pointed out housing areas as we left the city of Aukland, and I could tell he loves the countryside best. He took us to several wineries. The wine country here is a lot like we remember Sonoma County in the 80s, personal and welcoming. He introduced us to the staff, who spent quite a bit of time talking about the different wines and sharing their knowledge and love of this industry and the wines. Peter also shared something with us of his family. He is obviously a proud father and also enjoys traveling with his own family. He has lived here most of his adult life, and loves it here. We were so glad to share this day with him.

One of New Zealand’s leading wine producers, so well worth the visit. Staff was very nice and helpful, and it’s great to be able to taste all their wines. Tasting menu is reasonably priced and great value.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest expressions of Chardonnay in the ‘New World’.
