Oneroa Beach and town is the first stop from the Passenger Wharf and is a nice calm Bay with clear blue waters. It stretches a fair bit and has some good lookouts on the east side with access to the coastal walkway. When the weather is on your side this is a great spot to take your lunch by the ocean. Great place with secluded spots and always warm waters especially in the Summer!

One of the best beaches I have been to. You can climb the small rock called lion rock located in the beach and get amazing views. Sea is rough and didn’t feel confident to get into the waters. Also you don’t get public transport or regular app based taxi services like uber to this location. Make sure you arrange your personal transport before the trip. Wonderful beach to get relaxed over a weekend and spend some time with family/friends. Plenty of parking available too.

Stunning beach and magnificent view, there are many jellyfish on the beach that people should be careful of. Beautiful place for joy and surfing and photography!

Gorgeous black sand beach! They've even made stairs and railings to safely climb Lion's rock! I timed it and it only took 2 minutes for us to reach the top. Be careful not to walk barefoot on the sand in the summer as it's hot.

Enjoyed the journey just as much as the destination, New Zealands a beautiful place, worth visiting this beach with a few stops on the way to look out from the vantage points to take in the scenery.

Beautiful beach... we went on a week day and it wasn’t crowded. Good for chilling and for a swim. Dog friendly.

Beautiful beach, the perfect place to spend the day, a lot of things to do in the village, if you wanna stay in the beach all day, you can do that. The beach is big, you have public toilets, a lot of threes to stay in the shadows. Also, the beach is really clean, you can swim, do some kayaking and explore the rock close to the rift. Highly recommended place to visit in waiheke island

Amazing beach to go too with massive waves. Make sure to keep an eye on your children, because the water is very rough. There is a lot of black sand, so if you are going when it’s summer, make sure to have shoes on when you go to the beach, otherwise you’ll burn your feet. If you go during popular times, there is also not much parking available, so make sure to plan ahead! Overall great beach, I highly recommend it!

One of the most iconic beaches in Auckland. It became famous when Jane Campion's Piano was filmed here. White waves and black sands, blue sea and green mountains - these are the main colours. Everything is so picture perfect. However tourists please do beware: there are killer waves here. So be really careful and swim between the flags. There are thieves here - do lock your car and show no valuable.

The beach is quite large and has a few carparks which access different areas of the beach. It has fairly large waves so quite nice for surfers but there are plenty of people who swim there. Make sure that you stay between the flags. There isn't much shade so its good if you bring your own. Otherwise there is a bit of shade close to the base of lion rock. You can climb up Lion rock to get a nice view of the area. The large beach generally has quite a lot of people both in the surf and on the beach. Nice beach but it is quite hard to get parking particularly when its a good day. It is very picturesque and there are a few walking trails in the area for those into that.

Beautiful beach with soft black sand. If going in summer take something to put on your feet as the sand does get hot. The beach also gets busy during summer. Big beach with plenty of spots to laze around. Can take some time to get to with the road in and out. Good surf at the beach but also would be for advanced swimmers.

A beautiful place where you see black sand and a beautiful view with the sunset, and near it a wonderful waterfall

Lion rock climb is steep and narrow and very windy. There is a beautiful Maori guardian up there and has amazing views of the beach and houses up in mountains. We mainly just did the north beach which has black soft sand and very rough waves. Beautiful sunset views but sadly we went when it was slightly cloudy but it was still a stunner of a view. The walk down from the lion rock is a bit dangerous so wouldn’t recommend to children or those that have fear of height. It is an experience to try if you are at the beach for the views from up there. Very busy beach and is quite popular so parking is tricky. There are no dogs allowed on the beach. Waves looks great for surfing as we saw some amazing surfers doing their stunts. Would recommend to everyone even locals to check out this beach if they haven’t so yet.

Best place for photography in Auckland. I visited several times to capture views. My favorite time to visit is summer nights. We can take stunning photos of stars and the milky way. Most of nights, nobody is there so you can enjoy your time by yourself without worrying parking space. If you are photographer, I recommend to have telephoto lenses since there are lots of surfers which is best object to take.

A unique beach. My first visit was on sad, rainy and dark day but you could feel the uniqueness of the site, you could see surfers challenging waves and families enjoying the beach with the pure sea air. One year later I have to move back to Europe. The last thing I had to do is to go and run on the beach of Piha to fully breath the beauty of the site !

Perfect spot to spend a half day doing various stuff around the beach, learn surfing, climb mountains, fly drones, swim and lost continues. Unfortunately, its fame brings more crowd and eventually causes parking problem during peak hours but I did not face it during weekends.

Title: An Absolute Haven of Serenity Review: It's not every day that one stumbles upon an untouched jewel of nature like Piha Beach. Nestled near the iconic city of Auckland, this beach exudes an ethereal beauty that can leave even the most ardent of travelers smitten. I was greeted by a panorama of natural harmony - the indigo expanse of the ocean, the dramatic cliffs winging its sides, the lush emerald foliage outlining the skyline, and the anchor of it all, the mesmerizingly telegenic Lion Rock. The dance of colors as the sun sets, painting the horizon in shades of crimson and gold, offers a spectacle that evokes a sense of contentment, rejuvenating the senses and the soul. The beach's sands are pristine and soft, making barefoot strolls an absolute delight. The surf, with its perfect, commanding waves, appeals to thrill-seekers and casual swimmers alike. And yet, there's an undercurrent of tranquility that sweeps over you from the moment you step on this beach. Piha Beach isn't just a place to visit - it's a place to experience. It's a destination where tranquility and adventure converge, painting a picture-perfect canvas of nature at its finest. I mark my time here as a stroke of serendipity. Piha Beach’s breathtaking aura along with the friendly, welcoming local community makes this place a true testament to New Zealand's iconic beauty and spirit. Nestled away from the bustling city chaos, this destination is nothing short of a sanctuary. An excellent 5 out of 5 stars, and an emphatic recommendation for anyone who wishes to witness and be part of an unparalleled beach experience. Until you feel the sand beneath your toes, hear the cadence of the crashing waves, and see the sun slowly sinking behind the mighty Lion Rock, you truly haven't experienced what Piha Beach has to offer.

Piha is renowned for its surf, and experienced surfers flock here for the challenging waves. However, the conditions can be rough, so it’s essential to exercise caution and follow local advice, especially if you’re new to surfing. Easy access and parking

Very nice and quiet beach though can get absolutely packed during summer. Very close to the town centre. Toilets available. Very limited parking especially during high season. Great place to chill and enjoy the sunshine. One of the better beaches on Waiheke.

Piha is New Zealand's s most famous surf beach. Situated on the west coast of the North Island, 40 km from the city of Auckland, this black iron-sand beach has a reputation for awesome surf which rolls in over the Tasman Sea. We enjoyed our whole day over here! You can swim as much as time you wish, only you'll have to keep an eye of the time of the straight and shallow tides..later afternoon part it is not recommended for rookie swimmers to swim as the tides pull you back toward the ocean.

Beautiful black sand beach. Unique in itself with so much of natural beauty. Great place for surfing. There are strong waves. With multiple small volcanic mountain and very few houses, the entire view is quite scenic. Do walk around the beach and walk to the left you will find small sand dunes. Walk still little further with another intersection with the sea. Overall a great place to visit with family and friends. The drive from Auckland is scenic. Drive safe as the roads are quite narrow with few sharp turns.

  • 5/5 Petar V. 3 years ago on Google
I went on the beach side with fewer surfers. Parking was difficult to find on this beach, but the sand is very nice (though very hot) and the waves are incredible - I love swimming with them. Lifeguards patrol this beach too. When I went, it wasn't that windy. Would recommend bringing some kind of shelter for shade.

This was such a cool beach! The black sand was awesome and it was fun to watch the big waves come crashing in onto the beach. Lots of seashells too! Not a great beach for swimming unless you’re a very avid swimmer, BUT there is one spot further down where the water is much more calm and is great for swimming! There is also a trail that goes above the beach which is great for high tide if you’re wanting to get back to the parking lot and also provides a great view! Highly recommend this beach!!

Outstanding little beach with interesting rock formations. You actually can walk quite far -- from one beach to another -- depending on the tides. Lovely and peaceful, at least on a weekday. A highlight of my visit to the Auckland area.

Piha beach is divided into 2 parts - North and South. Both the beaches are absolutely stunning. Enjoyed the journey just as much as the destination, The road is quite curvy with some sharp turns. It is a 40mins drive from Auckland city. It has a serene environment with a breathtaking view if it's cloudy or if it rains. It has black sand and the beaches are very clean. The waves are very rough so avoid swimming and surfing as lifeguards are also not around in north beach. Carrying food and water is mandatory as we don't have cafes and shops nearby. Limited parking and public transport is not available. There are washrooms at the corner of the road which goes towards the north beach. I highly recommend this beach if you are a tourist or traveller.
