The museum is not very big comparing to maritime museums in bigger countries. You should be able to visit it in 1,5 hour. It is however very interesting. Exhibition ranges from Polynesian sailing (amazing how these people navigated with these rudimentary canoes), discovery of New Zealand, immigration (moving decks display)development of local shipping to local sailing.

We all had great time sailing on the Ted Ashby yacht and seeing the Auckland skyline from the boat is amazing. Going under the harbor bridge is also amazing. Later we explored the museum and had time looking at the sailing experiences from past till now. Team is really great made our experience memorable. ✨😊

Free entry for Auckland residents. A very interesting place with lots of knowledge about the sea and ships related stuff like aspects within the ship, lighthouses, fishing, voyages, ship captains, sailing, etc. Also there is a small ship simulator which I found it fun. Also, it has a small room with beds in the ship and cabins. They have plenty of beautiful ship models. Also gud info about the Maori's way of travelling on water and fishing. Definitely, this place needs to checked out.

So much money and effort has gone into making this a thoroughly interesting and insightful exhibition - and it’s paid off. From immigrants sailing to New Zealand, to the America’s Cup and Olympics, there is incredible detail into the history and stories behind key maritime events in NZ, and goes right up to the current day with facts and quotes dating 2020. There are many interactive features, such as some screens where you can design your race boat on a computer screen and race against the computer simulation or with friends to see who has designed the fastest. My favourite section was reading and discovering about the people who travelled over to NZ for a new life from the UK, what their boat life was like (seeing various cabins) and what they did when they arrived. It is an extremely entertaining and immersive experience and I thought excellent value. I was not expecting such a detailed, interesting, up-to-date and genuinely captivating series of exhibitions.

Unlike my husband, I have no particular interest in boats, yachts or ships but I found this maritime museum intriguing. Aside from the many model vessels, the New Zealand seafaring history was interesting. Worth a visit. Consider upgrading your ticket to go on a cruise around the harbor on one of their restored ships. Perfect thing to do on a summer day!

I'm really glad I decided to come here. There are sections focused more on the science and history of boats but also sections on the histories of the different people that have come to this island. Really fascinating!

Took an evening sail on board the Ted Ashby, it was a beautiful evening, was offered drinks and nibbles and told stories from the crew. Highly enjoyable.

Very nicely done with simple way of walking through - just follow the blue line. Plenty of tings to see - easily spent there 3 hrs so have some time on ur hands. If u r an Auckland resident (got to have a proof though), the ticket would be without charge. If not, well, we were told we can revisit the very next day on the same ticket if we didn't manage to finish the tour.

Very big. Takes 3-4 hours to get through it. A lot of information about history and connection to indigenous people. Nice clean toilets. Worth money. You can even come the next day for the same ticket!

Exciting experience! First time sailing. Never know sailing would be so convenient and cheap($21 for student). Mariners are so friendly and not crowded on weekday.

A great place for family. It is just a viaduct area. There is a lovely coffee shop if you want to spend some time relaxing before walking around the museum.

Nice museum dedicated to New Zealand’s maritime history. Starts off with Polynesian and Māori vessels, moves to settlement and Immigration, coastal trading, and modern day successes at the Americas cup. Some cool boats inside as well as berthed outside. I particularly enjoyed the art collection at the end of the tour. I’m not very knowledgeable about boats but I was able to follow and learn as I went through the experience.

Enjoyed the ted ashby sailing. It is absolute peace once the motor is off and the sails are up against the wind. Don't expect anything over exciting but its definitely worth your time and is indeed a nice experience. They are prepared for rain too as you get really good rain coats to keeps yourself from getting wet.

There is so much great stuff and great history here! We spent 4+ hours and ran out of steam. We cut it short because we had to catch a fight, but given a cappuccino and a bit of a break and we'd have spent another 2-3!

I feel that the NZ Maritime Museum is an unappreciated gem of Auckland. Every time I have been here with kids in "tow" it has never been a disappointing experience. My kids absolutely love it, although the rocking cabin did scare my youngest :) . This is a great Museum to visit, but I really want them to open up a maritime route to Torpedo Bay Navy Museum! It would be an amazing experience to take a vessel directly from this Museum from across the harbour to another very well established museum which shares a common heritage!!

Excellent museum and well worth a visit. The Maori maritime heritage section was especially interesting. You can go for a sail on one of the boats (ideally book in advance for that) and the whole place is super interactive, equally for kids and adults. The reconstructed steerage cabin is another highlight. Really great attraction.

Way beyond my expectations it is extremely interesting. Bought the combo ticket including 1hr boat trip in the bay which was also worth experiencing. Learned a lot about pacific boats and canoes, America’s cup NZ challenge but the best section for me was the immigration history one. Worth to see!

Great display of various size and shapes of early waka. There’s plenty is boats to see used in the early days up to the modern day boats. Highly if ur of this visit is joining the sail boat that’s run by volunteers who were ex sailors who never ever get tired of doing their passion. Sailors allow us to experience pull ropes to set the sails, arranged the ropes and even allow us to experience turning the helm of the boat. The sail boat will pass under the bridge and will turn back to the dock. Truly a fun and entertaining!

Lovely place to learn about New Zealand 🇳🇿 heritage and Maori ocean experience ⛵️🛶 It's open till 5 pm and if you want to learn more, you need more than 2 hours. There are some things for the little one, too👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Sails are available some days at a particular time. Check on their website - www.maritimemuseum.co.nz/sailings Staff is attentive and helpful 👌 The thematic souvenirs and organic coffee ☕️ add more value to this amazing maritime museum in Auckland CBD 🥰

Great place to take kids on a rainy day. There’s a space outside with wooden boats where kids can take the helm and lower the sails and tie the ropes so great fun. Lost of areas of interest for different ages. Cafe has vegetarian options and very tidy, pretty big and lots to see. Will come again

We really enjoyed the heavy emphasis on sailing in the first 2/3 of the museum. We could easily have spent several hours here. It would have been nice (especially for the kids) if there were more interactive exhibits.

Very nice museum if you're into ships or the history of immigration into New Zealand. We spent about an hour but it'll take longer if you want to read everything.

Naturally a very informative and thorough space of maritime culture & history. I recall the library is not open every day. Free for residents. If you take your time and take in what is here, it's a nice, relaxing spot away from the busy-ness. I liked the short audio story selection with comfy chairs.

This was actually the best museum I’ve been to in NZ. The displays were fantastic - varied, interesting and with loads of information. It really exceeded my expectations and I’ll be back to spend more time to really look around. We also went on the heritage boat, which was a really fun experience. The crew were so friendly, and let us have a go at doing lots of stuff while sailing. So great that you can actually go out on the boats and not just look at them! It really was a great day out, and I’ll definitely be going back!

Spent a couple hours here and it was very informative. I didn't opt for the addon of a boat ride or guided tour which I regret. They currently have an exhibit about America's Cup which brought more appreciation for my home city of San Diego that held it for a little while. They also let you return the next day with your ticket, I would have done that but I had already made plans for that day. If I recall correctly Auckland residents get in free as well so definitely worth checking out if that's the case.

Very interesting place, manned by some of the loveliest people I met in my travels. Lots of great things to see and explore and learn about. You can really feel the pride they have in their history. If you get the opportunity to do a heritage sailing, I cannot recommend that highly enough, it make for such an interesting and beautiful way to see the city.

Simply this museum is just not worth $25 per person entry fee, especially when you consider if you’re from Auckland it’s free Not enough items of interest to be called even the Maritime Museum far better free ones in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington One thing is for sure it won’t be crowded. Even with . A cruise boat is in Port no one bothers unfortunately, same goes for the WarnMuseum can’t believe Auckland‘s attitude towards charging tourists When they don’t charge locals I find this very discriminatory You would think New Zealand would want to show off its history, encourage people to read about it, but no they just want to make a dollar from tourism Give this one and the war museum a wide birth maybe The bureaucracy will change it’s Attitude towards tourists, but I doubt it

It was quite interesting to learn about the history of Māori navigation as well the journeys that took to the discovery of the islands. My favorite part was the Immigration section, quite emotional and life changing. We didn’t care at all about the yachting/speed boat section. We also filled in a questionnaire when we exited… quite strange and irrelevant questions and extremely long process, took around 10 minutes

Nice educational place to visit with children. Prepare to stay at least half of the day. The museum provides crafting activities for families during school holidays.

As someone with zero interest in boats maritime, it was a pleasant experience. Mainly targeting kids, great incorporation of technology and very interactive museum. My favorite part was the replica of the old home, total nostalgia for someone who grew up in NZ. Free entry for Aucklanders, great viaduct views from inside, local restaurants and take aways surround this location.

Came here to spend a couple of hours, and I walked out 5 hours later. I really enjoyed the cultural carvings and various sailing vessels from the Pacific. I'm going back there to see things that l haven't seen. I loved the ourside exhibits. It's the school holidays so there were lots of families and children. I loved the area, and it's right on the bike and scooter lanes, so it is easily accessible.

Awesome place, not many things in life are free also well worth donating, too. It's a lovely walk around with a lot of history and a great day out at the Maritime Musem. The best part for me was sailing a yatch in a straight line. Our grandson loved it here too. 💙

Excellent museum detailing much of NZ and Auckland’s maritime history. Interactive exhibits, plenty of auditory stations and videos, and heaps of official artifacts. I enjoyed how expansive it was so if you’re into old vs new boats you can find what you want. My dad spent hours in there and loved talking to the docent. My favourite part was getting a “ticket” to board and walking through the immigrant ship. My mother and I had a positive life and story, but my dad’s was something of a street worker who eventually died. Gave us a good laugh! Pristine facilities and all around A+. Dad said it was the best part of his trip.

We spent four hours touring this marvellous museum. The various exhibits featured several aspects of the New Zealand maritime history including the sailing craft of the indigenous people, the arrival of the Europeans by ship including the immigrant experience, the evolution of multiple and varied maritime vessels in the whaling, timber, and coastal economies, navigation, and the more recent America’s Cup sailing competition featuring the glorious efforts of the New Zealand teams led by Sir Peter Blake. Well laid out and fully accessible. Plenty of exhibits to keep the whole family amused and occupied for an hour or so. There are interactive exhibits and activities for the kids. This is a great museum activity for the whole family. A very interesting history of New Zealand's Maritime history, full of information for early days up to the latest Americas Cup race next year.
