👍 Enjoyed walking in the stream, it makes me happy. 17/02/22 : For goodness sake, the sign at the entrance gate clearly states No Dogs at this conservation area. Saw a family exiting with their two big dogs while we were alighting our car. Sadly enough, 10min on our way in, and there it was, a beautif... Popular spot! I arrived at 7am and small parking area was already full. You can use parking at Bethells Beach, easy 900m walk away. Great walk and swimming spot.

Saw a family exiting with their two big dogs while we were alighting our car. Sadly enough, 10min on our way in, and there it was, a beautiful 🦆 with its neck broken! How inconsiderate were those people, just cruel. We all love dogs and want them to have a good time too, but please spare a kind thought to the other animals.

Located near Bethells Beach, Lake Waimanu is a nice loop track for someone looking for a bush walk. The best way to reach the lake is to walk through the stream (literally). You could go via sand dunes but it’s tough and can get ver hot. Once you reach the Lake the loop track is on the left hand side. Worth doing this hours walk as there’s a nice waterfall at midway point. Parking can be a nightmare so would recommend going very early. Plus it will be cooler. No bathrooms around except a km away on Bethells Beach. Ideal place for a family outing as kids could play in the stream or boogy down the dunes.

The lake is awesome. The carpark is terrible as there were 100 cars and 10 carparks. Cars were parking everywhere and it was dangerous for the kids

The carparks good for parking cars...... but if you can be bothered theres a 20 min walk over/around black sand dune to a beautiful lake.

Wainamu Lake is a great place to have a walk and enjoy the sand dunes, the lake itself and the small waterfall at the end of it. It lacks a good picnic area though, with facilities like toilets, picnic tables, etc. (common in other places like this across the country) so be prepared to figure out by yourself where to have lunch, specially if you're going with family and kids.

Normally we would say "Oasis in the desert". However at Lake Wainamu, you can say it's a desert in the oasis. The sand dune is about 3 or 4 square km big surrounded by green hills and farms with Lake Wainamu in the east. This has bought us endless fun to slide down. The walkway is also highly recommended. Not to hard at all with a waterfall in the vicinity. As for the car park itself, it's small. Do lock your car. There are thieves operating. Wear an jandal as the sand can be scotching hot.

The walk to the Lake and scenery was lovely. Went early morning and able to get car park. Coming out at 11.00 car park was full and many cars parked in the road which would be hazardous being on a corner. More space needs to be made available for cars parking. Otherwise a great place to visit...

Easy and nice. With my 9 years old daughter, she feels not hard to complete it. Barefeet follow the stream, round the lake, then cross the dune. I love the dune, desert!

The carpark is really small and fills up quite fast. I was lucky enough to get one here. There is street parking all the way to the beach, as well as the parking close to the beach. The parking for the Te Henga Walkway is also close by. The entrance to the dunes as well as the lake is by this carpark.

Get there very early on sunny days and you will find a park. It's an otherwise very hard place to find parks.

Not enough car parking. Heaps of the roadside is blocked off so you can't park there

Love this place. Jump in the lake from the trees, or just chilling on a sand.

Beautiful scenery and relatively undisturbed. The trail around the lake gets very muddy during the wet season.

Don't let anything precious in your car when you go as there is peoples that can break into your car when you enjoy the Lac

This is a very small carpark with run off across the road but it gets very busy in the warmer months.

Bethell's Lake is a great, fun place to visit and is surrounded by natural beauty. It's a great place for a swim in the summer. Some creative people have created slides on the steep slopes of the giant sand dunes sliding down into the lake.

Great place to chill. Lake is after a vast area of sand . Ensure you take enough water to drink. Quite a walk before you reach the lake

  • 5/5 Emanuel A. 6 years ago on Google
Great and exotic place! After an easy 20 minutes walk you'll arrive to the lake. In a sunny day wear sunglasses and hat is a must.

This is an easy walk to do and although has a couple of water crossings they aren't deep and plenty of space if you want to take your shoes off. You can set off upstream which forks off to the left or you can go over the dunes. In winter the dunes are typically hard packed and easy to walk on providing a more direct route to the start of the trail which goes around the lake. At the halfway mark there is a gorgeous waterfall and a lovely place to stop and take in the tranquility. THis is a relatively easy walk no huge climbs and the trail is wide and well formed. A couple of parts could be better signposted. Highly recommend with kids as the dunes can be lots of fun and the lake appears to get swimmers all year round.

Sort it out and make more space, so popular and public make there own rules, dangerous for everyone. Lovely walk though

Great lake, but was very cold when we visited in November. Sand dunes are great fun. If you walk around to the right there is a spot to jump into the lake.

Very nice track and great with some challenge because it was a wet day. Perfect for turist in summer but when it's rainy you have to get the gear and fit for that 😊

A great stop where you can see the desert and the lake together.
