My name is Duran Callaghan and have just had surgery on my leg at north shore hospital this week. The hospital staff made me feel like I was in a luxury resort as opposed to the stereotypical hospital vibe. I felt very well looked after by friendly competent staff whom all went out of their way to not just make the experience cheerful but also a smooth operation. Even with all the short staff and extra covid restrictions they were all at work with a smile and an abundance of compassion. I wish I could have thanked them all personally but was not able to. I am hoping they can read this and know what a great job they do and that they’re very appreciated.

Busy place at all times it seems, Staff are for the most part struggling in the ED department, Patient services are great, Cafe on site, Pharmacy on ground floor but not open on Sundays .Only one gripe is the massive cost to park On-site.

They are understaffed and crazy busy, that being said the Nurse's are so kind they make you feel like you are the only patient there. When you do finally see a Dr they too are fantastic, empathetic and take the time to answer all of your questions. The level of abuse that these front line health professionals get makes me feel like we are not in New Zealand, patients there are rude, demanding and in some cases physically abusive to the staff. Its little wonder that all of our health professionals are leaving for AUS because who would want to work with third rate equipment and get abuse from people all day. Shall we just get on with it (fix their pay so they stay here) and remember we are a community and treat everyone with dignity and respect.

July 2023 I have been coming to the Cardiology department for 10 years. The frequency of my visits have been at 6 and 12 month intervals. I have always felt that the staff in this department were friendly, professional and caring on each occasion. My cardiac condition means that I will continue to visit here for a while longer. I believe that they staff are doing their best to keep me in a healthy state. Therefore they are part of a competent team keeping me in the best possible state of being healthy.

My recent visit to North Shore Hospital left me with mixed feelings. While the staff at the Emergency Department were friendly and easygoing, the persistently long wait times remain a concerning issue within the New Zealand health system. I was referred to another medical centre due to the extended wait times at the ED department. Despite the warm demeanour of the staff, addressing the ongoing wait time challenge would significantly improve the overall patient experience.

Admitted 27/09/2022 at 11.33am for surgery. Came without eating breakfast. Last meal I had was dinner on 26/09/2022. First night they told me at 7.50pm that there would be no surgery so I had some food my wife bought me. It is now 9.20pm 28/09/2022 and still no surgery or food. So far in 48 hours I've had one meal. People in prisons are fed and treated better

Great hospital, feeling grateful πŸ™ find them in time before the situation getting worse. The doctors made adjustments to my treatment when they think necessary. And did very thorough checks before the discharge. Nurses and other staff are kind and friendly. But I wish I could get more updates from the doctor's side, and when I asked nurses, there were some cofunsion. But overall, it's a great experience.

My dad admitted to Emergency last week due to heart attack but got vein infection. Nurse in this department lack proper training on knowledge and skills to practice strict aseptic techniques. The Kiwi India nurse was very arrogant and racist towards my Chinese step mom. Hospital should take feedback seriously.

Very long wait, no empathy at all as I needed to ask constantly for pain relief, ice pack even asked for a bed to relieve some pain if only checked my medical history or gave would see my pain regime unfortunately the upgrade still didn't help especially as couldn't take my sevradol. Was in at 7pm and saw the doctor at 7am next day after an agonizing 12 hours. Was ignored over and over left with level 10 pain from my shoulder, chest muscles, back and leg. The nurse and staff said no one want to deal with the guy in 18. I ask try been there 12 hours with very little pain relief I asked and suggested if i could have hot water bottle or ice pack or a bed to rest my leg or a bath to soak in to relieve pain. Tried asking until 10 hours later so yeah got angry yelled and swore at them as was so ridiculous and nasty situation also should see my arm had massive bruises from their constant rough prodding of a needle in my arm. After pain relief and the nasty comment I left went to Auckland hospital explaining my predicament was seen given neds, ice pack and a bed as they saw my severe pain was high level even looked at my chart saw how long i was waiting at North shore hospital so was lucky all within an hour then within 2 hours saw a doctor was given pain meds checked my history and saw my ongoing pain history and health issues. Oh by the way was offered and given breakfast and lunch released Friday morning with an free taxi. What did Northshore offer very little or nothing at all not even some food, had keep asking for water as was dry mouth constantly since I had long covid early September.

Lovely staff, friendly and attentive. Obviously very busy but not letting it effect the care they are giving me and other patients. Orthopaedic surgeon Josh was professional and friendly and I was made to feel at ease by the surgical nurses and anaesthetic staff. Lovely window view in the Cullen Ward aswell. Food has been tasty in both short stay and the Cullen ward.

Been 8 months since i gave birth at northshore hospital! It was great and food was awesome which was suprising! I was well looked after despite the short staff. I will always remember maria who helped clean and serve food on the maternity ward. I dont know if she still works there but she was such a blessing to me and my husband. She offered support wherever she could and was so so so kind! Auckland hospital please give maria the recognition she deserves if she is still under you. So sorry my review took so long! But Maria i will always remember your beautiful heart!

If I could give 0 stars I would. This hospital has diagnosed my dad with dementia. For starters he hasn't shown any signs of it. We recently had covid in our household and noticed after he had it he was out of it etc. Anyways, they said it had been progressing for years and that he only has 20% of his brain functioning. If that was the case he would have completely forgotten us by now and lost alot of skills, which he hasn't. They are now trying to force him into a home.He doesn't want to go to one They said it was my mother's decision and she decided to bring him home. They won't allow this at all and are now saying we have no rights or say.

Definitely a 0 star for the service they gave me on the 5th of March 12am to 3am. I was in 10/10 pain and was struggling to breathe or sit still because my body was in agony with severe fever, overdose, and possible tonsillitis. All the nurses had absolute no empathy whats so ever and did not even bother to give me pain relief after I walked up to them and asked for pills which was just sitting on the desk. Took my blood sample then waited 2 hours and no notice was given unless we asked and resulted in going home with little to no help. Horrible staff, rude customer service from 3 Filipino nurses. I was also almost vomiting outside and rolling on the ground because the pain and nausea was very strong and all they did was put me in a wheelchair inside and measured my heartbeat after going outside again to try vomit. I do not recommend anyone who is in severe pain to go to the emergency center and recommend going to Starship or the Auckland city hospital.

The worst hospital I’ve ever seen in my life, came with a severe stomach ache and back aches that was not able to breathe properly, high blood pressure and high fever, urinate infection. The worst part was that there were patients coming in emergency and only one doctor was there. Terrible experience waited 12 hrs and still couldn’t see a doctor A racist nurse was there that went through every patient to taking food order and past over me through. Absolutely worst

Ward 14 staff are great. The most friendly and caring nursing team of senior and junior staff. They work very hard to ensure my family member's medications and feed are given ontime. What stood out was one of the nurses knew more than the doctors in terms of checking a patient's clinical signs, she is clearly an experienced, assertive, and talented registered nurse that is a huge asset to the hospital.

If I could I would leave a 10 star review. Following a compound fracture I have been here 4 nights and had 2 surgeries. Without exception, every staff member I have come into contact with - whether it be cleaners, orderlies, technicians, theatre staff, doctors, surgeons, nurses, catering has been absolutely outstanding. I feel incredibly fortunate to be in the hands of such professional, caring medical teams. I have mentioned this to a few, and have received a 'thank you but it's just my job' response. Well it's not just your job - the way you do it with such care and grace, when patients are at their lowest points, that makes the massive difference. Thank you for the amazing work you do. I have been shocked by how some patients speak to your staff and witnessed (on a previous visit to ER with my father) your staff being physically threatened. Whilst I understand hospitals can be pressured environments and resources are limited, verbal or physical abuse should never be tolerated.

This rating is for the incredible team in the Maternity Ward, Birth Suite and SCBU! My baby was born 6 weeks early, from the gentle comfort from the midwifes of being told I was having unexpected c section from the birth suite to the lovely nurses who looked after me post surgery I thank you for being amazing and caring during this traumatic time for me! Now SCBU! Every single one of the nurses who looked after my boy for 4 weeks, took care of him while I was home, kept him safe and constantly told him how cute he was. But especially, for helping me get through tough times by comforting me while I was in tears majority of the time…I will FOREVER be thankful and in awe of you all! My boy is here, I’ve recovered well because of all the incredible nurses in all 3 zones! So thank you!

I have been in a lot of Hospitals and North Shore was by far THE BEST. I was in a surgical ward and it was the cleanest I've even seen and every inch was clean not just the bits you touch. The nurses were fabulous they were actually happy and friendly and focused on their patients, NOT standing round gossiping, they had the quietest handovers and were considerate of patients trying to sleep. Food was great and came at decent times and they had tvs above the bed with headphones which kept rooms so quiet. Found everything to be smooth and ran like clock work, fabulous if I have to go back I'm glad it will be The North Shore. They really are putting the other hospital's to shame. Amazing work in trying times.

Midwife Abbey Payne of the birthing unit is one of the nicest people I've ever met! Going in after a nasty fall while pregnant, she was able to ease my fears with her amazing personality and caring nature. She has an amazing sense of humor and her passion for what she does shows clearly through her work. She gave a lot of helpful advice and never made me feel like any question was a silly question. Being first time parents, my partner and I have no idea what to do but she was so patient and understanding and never made me feel like we were wasting her time. She really is a lovely person to have around when going through all the anxiety and nerves of pregnancy.

I was brought to North Shore Hospital on April 29, discharged on friday may 6, having been advised by St Johns Amublance (who were wonderful). After triage I spent the night in the short stay ward and was moved later to ward 10. I was diagnosed with a uti and kidney infection. I also later contracted a serious bowel infection. Although 74 years old I am of generally good health, but these infections put me low. From the moment I was admitted I was treated with the utmost respect and politeness and felt I was in good hands. The staff at ward 10, with out exception, from cleaners to charge nurse and of course the doctors, all went above and beyond the call of duty. I am a great believer the great leadership creates great culture. Ward 10 has a great culture. At no time did I want for care in any way, which I'm sure contributed to my recovery. I am growing stronger by the day. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart and will be on the list of those supporting them for better pay and conditions, which they so richly deserve. Yours sincerely Antonia Joanna Pearce 22/10/47

In October 2023 my wife had sharp stabbing pain in shoulder joint. Shore care north shore did a fanatastic job finding that there is cyst in her arm bone near sholder joint which looked around 8 cm in xray and they reffered us to north shore hospital. After more than 12 hours of waiting for the doctor , my wife was told to just use sling, take pain killers for 6 weeks and do not lift heavy. Doctor advised thats the treatment and surgery is not necessary as that is not life threatening. Now pain less until she doesnt life anything but my wife still feels something is there in the bone. So we went overseas and did some more tests - found that the bone cyst is 9.2 cm We found that the urgent surgery is required as if the bone is really week. If bone breaks it will not be easy to fix it due to bone cyst. Pathetic service where the surgery was needed they just asked to use sling, take pain killers and do not lift heavy. Even in the xray the cyst looked quite big but they didnt think its urgent.

I had the best experience here in elective surgery. I had a lump in my breast removed and even the appointments I had leading up to this surgery were all wonderful. From the receptionists to the nurses and doctors. Not one second did I feel uncomfortable. A appreciate absolutely everyone I met really tried to pronounce my name correctly! My surgery went super well. They really make sure your cosey before they put you to sleep so your not nervous at all. Felt very safe and I also suffer from anxiety so that says alot. Thank you again to the surgeon team, nurses and receptionists!

My elderly Mum has been in North Shore Hospital for the last ten days. In ED, ADU and Ward 11. Everyone in the family has spoken in high regard of the staff in these areas. She has been treated with love, care and respect. The family have also been treated well when enquiring about her welfare and with other requests. I cannot speak highly enough about the staff and of the care she has had. Thank you πŸ™

Thank you to the surgeons who fixed my mom’s hips, and my doctor for assisting me with my psoriatic arthritis. Of course there are communication delays, cancellations and etc, but the medical system in NZ is hectic and most staff are trying their best with what they have

Just want to acknowledge the nurses in the gynae ward for their care while I was in there two different times over the last month. I especially want to mention Nurse Charlotte while I stayed, both times she was so genuinely caring and is a credit to the hospital. I felt really listened to and you can tell she genuinely cares about her patients so please pass this on to her, (she will probably remember me as the dog groomer who unfortunately ended up having covid the first time I was in which prevented my surgical procedure from going ahead so I had to come back a few weeks later to have the surgery). All the staff I had dealings with both times I was in were amazing, the doctors orderlies etc and made me feel safe and looked after. Thanks so much! Hayley.

I take my hat off to Caroline the receptionist who was working today Saturday 07/01 on front desk upon main entrance. Lovely service and welcoming and also very helpful. Thank you for keeping us calm and making it a smooth entrance. I also would like to applaud Jonie the RN at Surgical ADU on ground floor who was very attentive, communication was on point, friendly and made us feel at ease during our mothers stay at hospital. Thank you for your amazing work and heart for our people! And for always keeping us in the loop on what was happening or what was about to happen next.

Deaο»Ώr Medical Staff, Kitchen Staff, Cleaners and Administration - It has been three-plus weeks since my first ED attendance (21/11) with a fractured wrist until my eventual wrist operation (9/12) and I am still bathed in the memory of your complete professionalism and kindness. I felt totally cared for - nothing was a problem. You also respected my age by not treating me like a β€œ76-year-old Senior”. You patiently answered all my queries and administered to my needs without hesitation. I am forever grateful.

I recently was discharged from NSH after having an my appendix removed. The staff were kind, courteous, consultative and lovely to be with. The time it took to process and diagnose me was quite long and arduous as they were busy (which is to be expected) but once I was in the system, they were great! An excellent culture and great team. Credit where credit is due.

I was admitted to hospital for the first time ever 3 weeks ago with a fractured tibia and fibula in my right leg. Didn't even wait 10 minutes in the ER before being transferred to a Consultation room. Within the span of 4 hours I received 2 xrays and had a temporary cast applied to my leg. The next day, spine surgeon Phillip Insull spoke to me and informed me that the bones were not quite realigned and recommended that I undergo surgery to have a titanium rod inserted into the tibia. He explained everything in great detail and helped to understand what would happen. I was moved to Ward 7 where I would wait until the next morning for surgery. Nurses and other staff were very friendly and answered very well any questions I wanted to ask. Post-surgery treatment was also done very well and physio was very helpful in getting me going on crutches. While I did wait for longer than I hoped to for physio, I understood the situation completely as they were understaffed. Overall, NSH made my first ever surgery and hospital visit much more pleasant than I expected it to be.

Wish I could rate 0. My grandmother was passing and they made the situation unbearable. Zero empathy. I watched in horror as they kept bringing my comatose grandmother trays of solid food and publicly shamed us when we requested that they didn’t. They also performed an extremely rough covid swap without warning while she was unconscious. Thank god she passed peacefully in her home after three long days of torture. Do not bring your loved ones here if they are in palliative care.

I was taken to North Shore Hospital for a dislocated elbow with a complicated fracture. From the get go I received excellent treatment. The doctor, nurses and orthopaedic team were excellent. Also every nurse and Orthopaedic dr. that attended during my stay, as well as the CT scan team and the ED team, and the Anaesthetists in theatre and Dr. Robert Elliot.
