A fun place to explore in the tunnels. Great that there is free access to everything. A number of helpful information boards around. Lovely scenic views. A number of car parks - lower and further up. Well worth the visit. Great for a free thing to do in Auckland.

North Head / Maungauika, is a volcano and Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountain) forming a headland at the east end of the Waitematā Harbour in Devonport. A short walk from the Devonport ferry terminal (I cycled in under 10) Maungauika offers wonderful 360 views over the harbour, city and the Hauraki Gulf. Since 1885 Maungauika was mainly used by the military as a coastal defence installation, which has left a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels now available to explore. Stay for sunset, it's beautiful!

Fun place to visit. The views are breathtaking. Kids have a lot of fun. Bunkers are great fun to see and kids love to explore such places. Only thing is that one needs to be a bit careful as it can get slightly dangerous. Perfect for a day out or a picnic.

Best to go on a beautiful Sunny day to see the surrounding areas. Did find a lost crying child that we helped reunite with family there so parents please give your children tags with your details on it so we can contact ypu if something goes wrong.

The most fascinating part of it is the tunnel. Kids love it. You can see WWII buildings, posts, batteries, etc. The walk is easy. There is upper car park also but really not much of a difference from lower car park.

One of my favourite places in Auckland. Reminds me of trips here when I was a kid

Fantastic views of Auckland city & one of the last hilltops you are actually able to easily access by car. Just beware that they do lock the park gates at a certain time & if your vehicle is trapped inside, you need to call a security firm to release you. Uncertain if they charge their victims, but it can be a bit of a wait. I've seen people trapped every time, so watch out.

Worth going for the views, to chill on the hill (for a picnic or something), or to look at the old batteries. The machinery is pretty impressive up-close.

Great views of the bay. Sunrise is fantastic. Also, old people on mountain bikes and historical forts as well. There is something for everyone atop North Head.
