Another beautiful isolated beach north of Piha! It’s not terribly difficult to access, but hiking down to the beach and back up can be a little strenuous. To get to this beach, turn off of Piha Road onto Anawhata Road and drive to the very end. It’s mostly gravel road and it will take 20 or 25 minutes. At the end is an overlook, a parking area, and the trailhead going down to the beach. It takes about 30 minutes to walk down to the beach, and a little longer coming back up. The beach has black sand that can be very hot in the sunshine, so wear shoes or sandals, and take a beach towel or blanket with you. The effort of getting to these isolated beaches is always worth it to enjoy the seclusion and the natural beauty!

Amazing hidden gem, beautiful beach. A bit of a walk, especially back up to the parking lot, but never a crowd over there.

Beautiful hidden gem. Worth a visit with 10km drive in without tar road and more than 30 minutes walk down to the beach

We have been to all beaches west of Auckland from Whatipu to Muriwai. This is one of the most beautiful and wildest beach, with nearly nobody. A gem as other contributors wrote. The access road to is small, 8 km long, without tarmac but praticable. This likely explain that only few will go. And the end of the road you find the pedestrian trial to the beach. It takes 10 to 15 mn to go down. It is steepy and would be difficult only for elderly or disabled people. It is really worth to go. There is not surveillance: swimming and surfing are not recommended On the road way, you may stop a few hundred meters before to go to the White Beach. The pedestrian access is more difficult and the view is less a pleasure.

One of the most beautiful yet aggressive beaches I've come across. A generously wider beach which spans a good 100m or so into the land and quite strange to blackish west Auckland beaches, this one has 'golden' sand...!! However, be careful reaching this lovely beach - you will be driving on a very narrow, winding, gravel road for about 20km, some places wide enough for just one vehicle only. And with heaps of sharp bends. !! At the end of the road there is a car park but you still need to walk about 2km further down on a steep, gravel road to access the beach. This is yet another typical rough west Auckland beach, is not patrolled, with so many rips and currents, swimming is not advisable!

Love steep hike to the beach. Big waves for surfing, swimming is not recommended. Beautiful look out to Piha. Please note that the access road is gravel, drive carefully.

This beach is amazing scenic place, beautiful landscape. About 1 hour driving from Auckland City center but it's worth. From the piha road to this beach, the road is narrow and unsealed, just take a little bit extra care with your driving. There is a car park there. It takes about 30 minutes walking from the car park to the beach. Big waves, not recommend for swimming, suitable for sight seeing. If you like a quiet beach, this place is suitable. There is a toilet at the car park. Camping, fire are not allowed.

Little hideaway gem near piha. Drive is along gravel road. At the end, it is a steep 30 minute walk downhill. Have to be fit. But we'll worth it. Beach is pretty much to yourself once you get there. Very beautiful!!!!!

Track close. 10km on a narrow gravel rd not worth it. Then you have to walk down to the beach, very steep.

Anawhata Beach is an epic location of the Lord of the Rings Amazon Prime TV Series. I know this because, lotronprime instagram account which is LOTR Amazon Prime official profile shared a picture on March 25, 2021. There are so much fairy tale places which might belong Tolkien's Middle-Earth story here. We will see this beach on the first season of LOTR Amazon Prime.

Typical west coast beach. Track is tricky after leaving main track. coming back is tough work as its all uphill. Overall, lovely beach, was quiet compared to most other Auckland beaches, parking was busy but enough for all.

It is a bit of a walk to get down to the beach, but well worth it when you get there

Great place for a swim... My friend's land has an amazing waterfall and pools above for a nice "sit down" as it's not that deep. Amazing scenery, so five stars for me.

Good secluded beach. Steep walk down and up 30min either way. No direct car access. Swimming is not recommended here. Beautiful scenery

👍👍 This huge, wide, and beautiful black sand beach is famous because it has been the filming site for many movies and TV shows. It is most famous as the beach where a scene was filmed for the Oscar winning movie, The Piano, where the piano was left behind. It is popular and can get busy on weekends or...

👍👍 Lovelly place for a family picnic, a good walk or paddleboard when the tide is up. Easy access from West Auckland. Good facilities - bathroom, shower, water fountain and two carparks - but be aware the carparka can fill in quite kickly on a sunny day.

👍👍 It's a lovely little beach with a big grassy area for picnics and a playground for kids. When it's low tide, you can walk quite far, but it is a bit muddy in places, so do be careful. There are good, clean toilets
