An UNESCO world heritage site which has been branded as the world’s largest book for its numerous ranges of pagodas each containing a page of the Tripitaka, the sacred Buddhist “bible”. It’s a very calm and peaceful place where one can linger under the star flower trees. Toilets are available outside the complex, a short 2 minute on the right hand side of the main gate. There are also plenty of food stalls at the exit. There is enough place to park a car outside.

Kuthotaw Pagoda is an amazing place. King Mindon had built the pagoda as part of the traditional foundations of the new royal city, Mandalay in 1857. He convened and lead the Fifth Buddhist Synod in 1871. The king wanted to leave a great work of merit by having the Tipitaka set in stone for posterity. The construction began in 1860 and the inscriptions were opened to the public on 4th May 1868. They were arranged in neat rows within three enclosures, 42 in the first, 168 in the middle and 519 in the third. One more stands at the southeast corner of the first enclosure making it 730, and this stone records how it all came into being. Thirty four brick rest houses (Zayats) stood all around except on the east side of the pagoda.

One of my favorite Pagodas around Mandalay. I’m drawn by the history behind the Tripiṭaka tablets which are also known to be the one of the world’s largest books containing729 kyauksa gu or stone-inscription caves. This place is picturesque, so make sure you to snap a few photos after appreciating the Burmese culture and learning about their history.

Kuthodaw Pagoda is an awe-inspiring site in Mandalay, Myanmar. The "World's Largest Book" stands tall with its 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist scriptures. Walking through this serene complex, one is immersed in history and spirituality. The intricate architecture and the peaceful atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Mandalay.

Beautiful pagoda with an interesting history. The Buddhist scriptures in each of its many stupas were once etched with gold and gemstones, but the British looted this all when they came through. It is still a beautiful place. Some rows of stupas are better maintained than others. The marble floor tiles help keep one's feet cool while the sun blazes, as do some leafy trees. Women who enter can borrow a longyi for free at the entrance. There is no entrance fee for tourists.

There are many inscriptions around the pagoda area that was inscribed of Buddha sermons and doctrines called Three Tipitakha as Pali . Moreover you can see extremely old star-flower trees in there . It is one of the peaceful place of Mandalay city . May I cordially invite you to pay a visit for world's largest books. That place is so close with North-east part of ancient palace wall.

Very neat set of small white buildings, each with a stone "page" of the largest book in the world inside. You have to walk from building to building to read it. The buildings themselves are very cool to look at even if you can't read Myanmar because there are so many of them.

Amazing historical landmark 👍 Its name translated literally means Royal Merit. It contains 729 tone-inscription caves, each containing a marble slab inscribed on both sides with a page of text from the entire book in Buddhist text. You will find a magnificent tree with the compounds. Truly amazing! Just remember that it's a space of prayer so you are required to dress modestly and remove your shoes. Ladies, no shorts or mini skirts! ⚠️

They call it the biggest book in the world, with each of the 70 odd stupas containing pages of a book in a language that is long extinct, spoken only by monks. I went in April and it was 42C, something to note if you're walking on hot asphalt covered by a thin carpet. I was only able to visit two other places, the Golden Palace Monastery and the Mandalay Palace. I liked this the most of the three

This is one of the most beautiful pagoda in Mandalay or even Myanmar. The place holds the record for being the largest book in the world. Although it is a part of Mandalay archeological zone, but no one asked for the ticket. We entered from the west side. You can spend as much time as you wish, but typically one hour should be good enough. The place is near to other major attractions of the city. Some of the pagodas were recently painted and some are being painted.

The one with again too many pagodas, but they have space to walk around and get some great clicks! There’s a page to ten book inside each pagoda, making this yeh largest book in the world! Ticket to this included in the wooden Monastry entrance pass. Request everyone to please allow the tourists around with some clear spaces for photographs. There’s ample parking space around at some nominal charges.

Stunning place. Walkways built a bit too close to the stupas so hard to get good photos. The book is large single page tablets in each of the numerous stupas. It would be hard to bind those into a book. When we went there renovations were going on.

Better than average Pagoda in Mandalay. My wife and I visited in January 2020. It was more crowded than expected despite being a weekday. There were several photo shoots occurring throughout the site which made it challenging to get quality photos given the size of the respective groups entourages. The numerous white pagodas where unique and interesting to see. I’d recommend stopping by.

The largest stone book in the world is located in Kuthodaw Paya ("Pagoda of Great Merit"). It consists of 729 stone steles with Buddhist canons, that form the complete text of the Tripitaka. Each stella is located in a separate pavilion. Continuous reading will take approximately 450 days. 2,500 monks gathered in Mandalay in 1871 for the Fifth Buddhist Council, where they spent 5 months examining, collating and writing down the sacred texts of the Tripitaka. They decided to immortalize these sacred texts in stone, as a souvenir for posterity, and began construction, which lasted for 8 years. The craftsmen carved only 10 lines a day. In 1900 the text from the stone steles was printed on paper resulting in 38 volumes of 400 pages each.

Entrance is free. Really beautiful and quiet temple. Alot of picturesque and instagrammable spots. Souveniers are usually from 5000Kyats to 10000Kyats. Flowers to place at the Buddha statues costs below 2000Kyats. Entrance has lots of mosquitos so do take note of that.

I really enjoyed the peace and tranquility on this holy ground. Lots of religious inscriptions throughout the temple in the white stupas that is the signature of this place of worship. Enjoyed taking different framed perspectives from various angle too. Definitely a good photo opportunity spot for avid photographers! Also a great place to get in touch and have a deeper understanding of Buddhism in Myanmar. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

👍👍 Interesting place to visit. Some of the buildings look great and others could use a coat of paint, which they appear to be in the process of doing. Definitely check out the view from the top of the watch tower. It costs 10000 kyat to get into the complex.
