We order takeout pretty frequently and have a frequent complaint that they do not give us enough rice. We order two curries, and two naan, and they give us one not very full container of rice. So, we pay the $2.50 for extra rice. And they give us the EXACT SAME amount of rice. This is infuriating. It happens every single time, unless you pick it up yourself, check, and complain. When I'm paying for $18 curry, I'm already annoyed to pay for extra rice. When I paid for it and don't get it, I'm left with hungry kids, wasted curry, and an expensive 1 star experience. I should add that the one star is to get management's attention to this this issue. We love the lamb kashmiri and have been regular customers since they were in their old location, where we hosted our rehearsal dinner. As other reviews have referenced, the food is not always consistent, as the cook staff turns over. In my experience, it's pretty spicy - I always order mild to share with my young kids and it's often too spicy for them. We ride bikes, so the Rainey street location is not a deal breaker, but I do think they'd do a better job of taking care of people if they were in a less tourist-slammed location.

We were there for a concert. This concert was on a back patio of the restaurant. Restaurant was full, but service on our patio was fast. Food was amazing! I’d love to come back when I am in Austin again. Really cool place, with a charming atmosphere and delicious food. Oh! They bake fresh bread in tandoori for each order.

Great food here. We got the makhani and vindaloo and they’re both great with proportionate spice levels. (medium’s good if you’re usually tame with spice) Service was great and they had a man playing, maybe Italian, lovely music with a kind of unique guitar. I love the lighting too. Overall, the ambiance was delightful.

I have really high standards when it comes to Indian food because well I'm from India so. This place really surprised me and I can recommend this as one on my top 10 in Austin. Having said that, good things - their spice levels - mild to spicy to desi spicy - that's amazing. It has ample amounts of seating - both indoor and outdoor as well as table service. The outdoor is sheltered in plastic - that's awesome and I really love the decor. The service and waiters are amazing and I love the food. The sauces weren't too intense and the selection is pretty good. I'll highly recommend this place and I'll recommend - the butter naan, the chicken Tikka, bhindi and Saag paneer.

Very nice Indian restaurant in Austin’s hottest neighbourhood, the recently gentrified Rainey street. Simple live music was definitely a bonus. Food tasty and service friendly.

My go-to for Indian food in Austin any night of the week. The Fruits & Nuts Naan is my favorite, accompanies any dish. I always go for the Tikka Masala with Chicken (med spicy) and another dish, such as the Korma or Makhani with Lamb, and slightly spicier. Portions are good and always flavorful. I just absolutely LOVE this place - great location, excellent service and fun ambiance.

Food was okay, but my reason to give 1 star review is the behavior of the manager. She was very rude. Me and my girlfriend wanted to seat side by side because it was our anniversary so we wanted to eat side by side. I explained our waiter the situation and she let us sit side by side then after 20 minutes when we were eating our food, the manager came and told one of us has to move because the other customer has to seat beside us. The other customer said “but the restaurant is completely empty inside, let me seat somewhere else” then manager replied “all seats inside are booked expect these 2 tables so you have to seat here” then the other customer felt embarrassed coz of the whole situation and he seated outside. The manager came to me its our policy you can not seat side by side so you need to move. I asked her for to go box and left the restaurant after paying the full amount. I was very surprised to see such a rude behavior from a manager from a such a nice place. I had high expectations from this place but I was very disappointed.

Great Indian food in Austin. The mango lassie especially is amazing. Service was above and beyond by the bar manager. What a guy.

Food: Good, serving size is small, and I'm not a big eater. You will not have leftovers. Service: Mediocre, server was nice and good, but dissappeared for 20 mins right as we should have gotten our check and been able to leave, but we had to sit there for 20+ mins longer to tab out. Lame. Location: Rainey St. Always a punk to park, so dont go here if you arent doing out to drink or see music here, too. Not worth it just for dinner if you're driving and trying to park.

This was once the best Indian restaurant in Austin. Best saag paneer hands down. Now it’s like a cheap rendition of it’s former self. The saag paneer is now the generic Indian spice taste you can find for half the price anywhere in the country. Owners/managers where is the quality control??

This is one of my favorite places for Indian food. They will actually make it spicier than other restaurants and the food is really good. However, G'raj Mahal comes with 2 big drawbacks: 1. Location: Unless you live in the area it's hard to get to and I am not a big fan of the Rainey Street Crowd. 2. Their prices are pretty high. So high that they will charge you $2 for chutney. Let me repeat, two whole dollars for a little tub of chutney. It's pretty disappointing.

If you're looking for authentic indian food, look elsewhere. -the biriyani was meh. Didn't taste nearly as flavorful as anticipated. Like it was missing something. -the chicken tikka masala was not good and again, lacking in flavor. Definitely not authentic, and the chicken was undercooked. Which is crazy given it's a curry? I don't know...but my parents agreed. -appetizers and lassi were good. Ambiance is nice.

I loved this this place. I’m not a huge fan of Indian cuisine due to too much curry and hot spices or sone foods tend to be bland. I’ve been overwhelmed with local Mexican and brew pub food. I love the ambience of this place and really wanted to dine in this beautiful place. I explained to the waiter what I did and didn’t like. I do like a little kick and nothing bland. He was helpful in explaining the dishes. He helped me decide on shrimp korma and natural. I also had a local beer. My late lunch was superb. I even enjoyed the birds hopping from table to table. I even has a conversation with a manager, I think. Both were very personable. Lunch was a little pricey but it was my main meal for the day. Don’t pass up this place🤩

Great place that gets better and better EVERY time we come!! There are squirrels, raccoons or something cruising under the back deck! truly a cool ATX original casual indian staple.

Good food. This was really the first authentic Indian food that I have had but I have to say that it was well done. Nice atmosphere and the food was great! Good selection, the menu even had a break down of the ingredients. The waitress was helpful and the food didn't seem to take that long to arrive. I would recommend that you give this place a try if you are feeling adventurous or just wanting something out of the ordinary!

  • 2/5 Cami C. 2 years ago on Google
The container arrived less than half way full. Tikka Masala only had like 5 chunks of chicken. We ordered two meals and got 10 small pieces of chicken for $50. So disappointing after hearing great things.

Absolutely delicious, authentic Indian food. There were a lot of vegetarian and dairy-free options as well. The prices were very reasonable for the portions and quality of food. Highly recommend!

Great customer service by our waitress (didn't get her name unfortunately!). I personally did not like the taste of the food but it could be because it's my first time trying Indian food. I will say i got to taste several other dishes from friends and they were okay as well. The lamb was definitely my favorite with lots of lemon juice. Now i didn't get to take more photos but one can really admire the atmosphere such as the unique restrooms. The only thing we didn't really like is the lack of light (or perhaps they should make the menu's font more bolder or bigger) because we weren't able to read without using our cellphones.

Food is not really tasty, if you ask for chicken they have more potatoes than chicken and the rice is average. The bread is amazing and the coconut one was a nice surprise for me, because it’s tasty and no so sweet and really easy to combine with the rest of your food. The environment is amazing and the waiters are super cute

Love the ambiance and the service. The restaurant looks really wonderful and interesting. The spice level is wonderful and if you visit in winter do try the ‘tamatar soup’ full spicy.

  • 5/5 Laveena B. 5 years ago on Google
Was feeling adventurous and tried the 'Super Spicy' level with our food. Totally worth every watery eyed gasps of air we had to take to finish this deliciousness! The masala chai in particular was my favorite - tasted like a warm, fragrant hug in a cup!

Does this look like a Chaat to you? I have been to so many Indian restaurants and this is probably the worst of all. It doesn’t even look like it is an Indian restaurant. The cost of item is more than twice and taste is horrible. I was tricked by the positive reviews. Those reviewers were either purchased reviews or reviewed by drunk folks. Never EVER eating there EVER again. And moreover the owner/manager doesn’t even come to you to make sure your food is as expected. Don’t go here.

I placed an order online and it said it would be ready in a half hour. I got there and they hadn't accepted my order. The waitress was super apologetic and gave me a drink for my troubles. They ran out of cauliflower so I couldn't get what I initially wanted. The fact that she went above and beyond is why I give the place 5 stars. It was really cute and relaxing atmosphere. The spicy- something it had mezcal- was sooo delicious! The food was pretty good too! The rice was so good you could eat it by itself!

I will give zero star for this pani puri if i can as you can see in the picture. Rest of the food like mango lassi was sour in taste. Hope management will improve in next visit.

The good: - Nice aesthetic, they really put time into making this place look nice and feel comfortable. A front and back patio, and a dimly lit indoor area gives lots of options for scenery while you eat. The bad: - Staff is passive-aggressive when it's busy. Had a waitress who I had asked if a dish contained actual pieces of coconut, because I really don't like the texture of them, and she said that there wasn't and that it was just a sauce or cream. Sure enough though, the dish had coconut flakes in it. I let her know about it just so she could have the right information for the next person (AND told her it was okay and I'd keep the dish too, mind you), and after that, her appearance to our table was sparse. No more water, took a half hour after we finished eating just to get our check. It left me with a less than positive feeling about the experience. - The food is not very authentic. I've had 3 different dishes here, and they're all pretty lackluster versions of some better fare you can get here in town. The appetizers are good. Staff: 2/5 Appearance: 5/5 Food: 3/5 Verdict: Just like the rest of Rainey St., G'Raj Mahal is a well-decorated, fancy building hiding an overpriced and underwhelming experience.

I wish I had pictures of my food this night. It was amazing. I am not vegan but all of our plates were vegan or vegetarian that night. It was the best Indian food I've had. It reminded me of the Indian food in London which is exceptional. Try it out. The area around is cute and fun too with clubs and bars.

Amazing atmosphere and the food is always hot and delicious. They have tons of drink options including a bunch of local beers on tap. My favorite way to end a day on Rainey St.

Neat Pitstop complete with lavender infused Blue Caracao margaritas and genuine classic Manhattan cocktails. Perfectly concocted and friendly barkeep. The misting fan patio offered exceptional refreshment beyond our thirst on this crazy hot trip to Austin!

The food is always great. But today we waited over an hour for our food and had to check multiple times on it. Feel like something was going on that we didn’t know about.

I had a fantastic in this restaurant. We liked the wonderful environment and the food. The staff were super amiable. I am content we finally decided to try this place.

Very good food! Plenty of outdoor sitting but a few tables available inside next to the bar. I was glad they offered dine in since most places on Rainey are either closed or available only for take out/delivery, even the food trucks. The girl working today was very nice, I am glad she recommended the Korma (sorry, I didn't get her name).

I ordered chicken biryani, garlic Naan, kheema Naan, vegetable samosas, and lamb samosas! they were very friendly and I even saw them making my Naan in an actual tandoor oven!!! loved it all!!

Used to be good, now the quality has gone down quite a bit and the Prices have gone up a bit. if you order take out out they give you smaller containers, charge extra service fees, and the food is not as good.

Tale-out portion size is small for all items for the price. decent food but not much of it.

Checked out this place on a Sunday afternoon with my sister. I haven’t always liked Indian food, but in the recent years I have developed an interest for it. The place was pretty empty and only one other party inside. When we came in it was a bit confusing as to how ordering worked, but you go up and order at the bar and they deliver the food. The menu is pretty small, but makes it easy for those who are indecisive. The menu included fish here which was pretty cool because I don’t see that at most Indian restaurants. I ordered the Fish Tikka item with some naan on the side. I will say it was a good amount of food even though it didn’t originally look like that. I left full. The food was decent. One thing that I didn’t like was that you only get 1 cup of rice for every two entrees. This wasn’t specified at the beginning and why would that be the case anyway? Fortunately they forgot to add to the bill. Overall okay place, but not my first choice for Indian food.

Overpriced. Horrible service. Indian Food? Ha! Inconsistent info from servers, along with multiple servers ghosting our table. Had to ask for several things more than once. They didn't have one of their "specialty" drinks available, because they didn't have the ingredients! So, if you want mediocre faux Indian food at very high prices, enjoy being ignored, repeating yourself, and staying there FOREVER due to those reasons, by all means, go. But wear a mask.

  • 5/5 Alexander S. 4 years ago on Google
Great Indian food right in the middle of Rainy St. Plenty of quality vegetarian options, and I also like the fact that they have menu items here I haven't seen at other Indian places in town, like the Rogan Josh with a yogurt sauce.
