Definitely an experience to add to your bucketlist whilst in Tasmania. Personally- the actual museum was not overly impressive. The artwork was mediocre and overall 2 hours is more than ample time to experience the museum + return ferry ride. Getting there: we went by ferry which was a joyful and picturesque ride (we went standard - not the Posh Pit and paid $25 return). You can buy your tickets online which I recommend in the peak season (we visited in December) as the ques will have you waiting over 20 minutes. Trip is ~25minutes each way and you need to select your departure and return time. This is important as once on the island changing your return ticket time is very tricky when busy. There is a box office on the island to change your return time if needed. Museum: tickets were $35 adult (All up, a $60 day trip with the ferry). We actually preferred the outdoor artwork, lookout points and entertainment/food/drinks on the hill which you can enjoy without am entry ticket to the museum. There is not a lot of shade, so pack your hat and sunscreen. Definitely would return but as a lunch or evening trip to enjoy drinks and food and entertainment on the hill (and bypass the museum).

An incredible experience!! The museum is very unique and unlike anything I've experienced before. A word of warning, some of the exhibits contain very adult content and is strictly not for children. I can see why this is Hobart's number one tourist attraction. Will definitely return.

What can be said that hasn’t already been said? Well, for one this is an art exhibit built around shock and awe. Don’t bring little kids unless you want to either avoid many of the exhibits or set yourself up to explain a bunch of content you may not want to have a young person experience. Good food, awesome multimedia and multimodal exhibits, just a bit hard to get to. Definitely worth a visit.

Called in this afternoon. Didn't have time to go through the museum. But a quick look around the grounds. Very well maintained and clean. Loved the vibe. Lots of people enjoying the music sitting in bean chairs I the sun. Food was quite expensive!

It’s hard to believe that I’ve only just managed to visit this gallery, after decades of desperately wanting to! This museum is GREAT! Literally the best gallery in the world that I’ve been to, including those in Firenze, Italy. MONA is an entire artistic experience… from the moment you enter, it’s like being transported inside a Salvador Dali painting. The focus on surrealism really did things for me. No boredom where: many of the installations are interactive, or landscapes that you walk through. Every kid I saw in the place loved it as much as the adults. In fact, everyone should ensure that their kids get to spend at least one whole day exploring MONA. My only criticism is that some of the staff were incredibly rude, which was a pity when the art was so enjoyable and their whole job was to interact with the public and be helpful and friendly! But even those bad apples couldn’t ruin the crumble. Visit this place. It will blow your mind!

This has to be the most amazing gallery I have every been to. Better then ones across New York and Melbourne. It had a very dark subject matter theme across the gallery which was quite interesting. I really enjoyed all of the exhibitions and the gallery it self is very architecturally interesting. Definitely worth a trip here and if you are going make sure you block out at least half the day. We weren’t able to catch the ferry but we caught the bus and the driver gave us interesting facts on the way.

When I asked a friend, what I have to do in Tasmania, he said: MONA. So I did - and it was great. If you can’t afford the ferry (which would be a recommendation tho), you can also go there by public transport in about an hours (until 31. April it’s free!). You should definitely get the app as it can tell you a lot more are the pieces. You should plan to spend a minimum of 3 hours here, which you can easily extend to 5, as there is so much to see. Many describe Mona as “just weird”. That might be true - but it in a very interesting way. It made even me, who knows nothing about arts, think and reflect. Or just wonder. Or just be amazed. It’s a great place, there is lots of stuff for kids to see too, maybe just ask the staff which rooms to focus on/avoid. You have to book the tickets in advanced on their website which is really easy to do. 10/10 would recommend. :)

It's such a beautiful place in Hobart. Worth visiting at least once or twice. It's quirky and fun. It has great activities too. And the best of all, the architecture of the building is another level!

Interesting artworks and a beautiful building. However there are no signs/information displayed next to artworks - you have to use your phone and download an app, which I don’t think suits all age groups. Nice cafe inside. Car parking is very bad for such a popular attraction. 1-2 hours was plenty of time for us.

Best museum! Very interesting and engaging exhibits. We went on a public holiday, so it was very busy, however staff were courteous and wait times were minimal. Delicious food was also available in the garden at a reasonable price with good, live entertainment. Car parking was also very close and easy. Would definitely come again!

I was a little disappointed with one thing I'm a single dad who enjoys art but as I have a young boy I was unable to get the full experience of the wonders that Mona have due to my son wanting to touch everything and wanting to rush through his interest was limited if there was maybe somewhere I could leave my boy who could experience art in a way he may enjoy the experience as well so then I could take my time and fully take in the experience i think it would be more family friendly and children could enjoy art just like there mums and dads. We both enjoyed the ferry ride over but for the young fella it sort of stopped at that with the ferry ride back just as enjoyable Mona is a great place to visit for its various art exhibits the music was great on the ears and and a variety of places for lunch and some tunes.

I don’t usually like museums but I would recommend this place to everyone ! There are heaps of quirky artworks and also playgrounds for kids. Plenty dining options too. Highly recommended - this is a must for all visitors to Tasmania. We did the ferry option from Hobart to Mona - I recommend this too. Staff were excellent !

The building and grounds are amazing and that's just the start. This museum is well worth a visit in Hobart, and I can see why it has its popular reputation. The ferry ride is well worth it too, the river is stunning. Plan for at least 3 hours, if not more to sit, eat a meal and enjoy the live music.

Mona is an impressive venue, and my visit from 10 am to 3 pm allowed me to explore its vast collection. The sheer magnitude of exhibits can be overwhelming, so I recommend starting at the bottom and taking a break for lunch before tackling the remaining floors. Be prepared to dedicate the whole day to fully appreciate everything Mona has to offer.

Always an incredible day out. Revisiting the permanent and seeing the new exhibits is just a recipe for success. Combine it with excellent food and beverages available in and outside of the actual museum, complete with artful toilets, masterful landscaping,... makes this place a wonderful visit for young and old.

The Mona is such an amazing place. This is my third time here, and I was surprised how much new art and new exhibits there were. The kids they enjoyed it immensely, especially the more interactive ones. We also decided to eat lunch there, and had a great time sitting on the grass, listening to the band with a few drinks, and some great food top it off with the ferry to and from what a great day out.

EASILY the best. Absolutely mind-blowing. You can't miss it. I'd travel a long long way to go again. Easy to access from the city (15-20 min drive). Food - there are a few restaurants (fancy ones if you're interested) but there is a food truck outside and there is a cafe style place inside. The winery is there too for an easy drink and snack.

It is a very stylish museum for all ages. Exhibition objects merge the trends of past and future, beyond generations, genders, genres, and senses. Just amazed with artists' imagination and creative abilities. The museum is settled underground but the design is spaciously modern and vivid. Outside areas are also interesting: abstract sculptures, live music, onsite restaurant, kids playground are all part of the modern arts. It is a place worth visiting again and again...

We had a wonderful experience at the Mona library with a young man with long hair. He was very friendly and very knowledgeable, you could really tell he loves his job. He even brought my parents glasses of water as we were taking a break from all the walking. It was truly a pleasure to meet him and he is an absolute asset to MONA.

Best way to spend a day or two. They are very disability friendly. My blind husband was given a personal tour and allowed to feel certain pieces of art. It was fantastic

Easy to get to by car. Very interesting buildings, even without the art. The art gallery itself is an amazing experience, located about 15 to 25 meters below ground. There is plenty to see and is very cool compared to the temperature above ground. On the B3 level, you will find the Void bar where you can order food and drinks. Water is complimentary. Be sure to download the O app to get an interactive map. You will also need to queue for some of the exhibits, which you can also do via the app. This was a great day out.

Had a great time at the museum. The museum isn’t a typical one that you could expect, and that’s why it’s interesting and fun to us. We could understand it might not be suitable for children or older generations. But we couldn’t get why it’s controversial, in our point of view it’s very artistic and had a great range of collection of arts. The environment surrounding the museum is also great, could easily spend a day here.

Only go if you are BOTH drunk and childless. It isn't pram friendly, nor is it a fun place for kids. some of the art is cool but lots of it is just bold statements about how artists should find other jobs. My husband, the gentlest man ever, said "there is something fundamentally punchable about all of this"

The MONA art museum was recommended to us a couple of times, so we decided to book a ticket, despite the fact that there are many other museums in Australia free of charge. However, we expected something more. Yes, there was heaps of art installations, some weirder than others. But overall it didn’t leave a highly positive impression on us. We didn’t like that you had to use the app in order to get any information and it was a bit difficult to find your way around. Overall, nice place to visit, the cafe & bar looked nice and the surroundings as well, but keep in mind that it is very special art.

Was interesting to visit, unfortunately not my cup of tea. I like the more classic types of art and art work. It's was packed today so pleased there were those who enjoyed the art and the interactive art works inside Mona . Varying options of food but book in well ahead of time as they book out quickly.

Everything was fantastic. MONA offers everything from the art experience to food and drinks with fantastic live music, wonderful architecture, nice ferry ride, made all the more enjoyable with great service. If you enjoy art, outdoor music, architecture, gardens, ferry rides, food, craft beers and more then MONA is worth a visit. My only regret is not having enough time to enjoy everything. I would recommend dedicating an entire day! It is worthwhile. Enjoy 🤙

We had a fantastic day at MONA! The grounds and collection were simply incredible each in their own right! As an art lover I was in heaven. After reading some of the other reviews I can say that not every piece is for everyone, and there is certainly some works that put you out of your comfort zone! But that is art doing its job!! Take an open mind and a sense of adventure when you go and you wont be disappointed.

Truly world class experience... It's not just the artworks but the experience. From the giant snake mural by Sidney Nolan that gets more detailed as you explore closer to the immersive visit to a sarcophagus in a darkened water filled room there's a surprise around every corner. Make sure you allocate several hours. There's a bar inside and often music. Catch the ferry across for an even more enjoyable experience

Loved it. Was overwhelmed by the variety n breath of art displayed. I felt I needed multiple visits to absorb it all. Alas, time n distance was a barrier. Definitely recommend to anyone who appreciates the creativity of man or woman throughout history n into the future. Access to these works is a great reminder of how lucky we are.

The experience is indeed interesting. The art collection seems more reflective of what the owner likes, rather than a professional curated art collection. The architecture is impressive - wort visiting at least for that. Finally, the whole experience is somewhat cult-like… not sure how to put it differently.

I took the ferry from Hobart, about a 30 minute trip there. Alcohol and food served on board. There is a VIP option offered with service to the seat and front view of the trip. What an awesome experience at the gallery, the outside garden is nice to sit and chill in also. Very cool experience. We left it later in the day but I think lunch time would be better to get it all in.

An absolutely stunning experience for the senses is perhaps the only proper way to describe my experience here. The art, the sounds, the magic they create with light (or darkness) and spider webs, amongst many other things is just unbelievable. I would recommend a minimum of 3 hours to explore this place, although I reckon we could've spent 5 hours here easily! The staff were very knowledgeable and polite as well so overall a superb experience.

WOW, what an interesting place to visit. Some really amazing exhibits. We only visited for the day to check out the museum, and it was well worth it. I can certainly see why some view it as very controversial and confronting. It's great to see something different like this.

Amazing! The experience was amazing! I loved everything from the ferry ride down to the dark and interesting sights the museum had to offer! I will say this. Bring enough money for bar and food if you rode the ferry and have enough waiting time!

Interesting experience 😁 Loved the cocktail bar and coffee shop🍸inside the Mona. The Art was interesting, some art pieces were distasteful but i guess that's all part of the experience. Close your eyes if your precious and easily offended 😂 Great food places outside of the facility. Excellent experience.

  • 5/5 Paul W. 1 year ago on Google
Every time is a great unique experience. With a unique and captivating location the unique pieces combine to inspire and draw out mindfulness. Some areas have adult content which can be confronting. There was one exhibit I had hoped to see was the cobblestones from Hiroshima which were available to make a rubbing. A great educational piece was a wall of female intimate anatomy.

Tasmania’s man made wonder. A cultural light bulb and we tourists are drawn to it like moths. And rightly so. The buildings and grounds themselves are a work of art, an architectural masterpiece and an engineering wonder. What’s inside is more impressive. Provocative and inspiring. Sublime and grotesque. It’s what good art should be.

Wow. Just wow. Great curating! Interesting pieces and installations, mixing sight, sound, and a bit of motion. Wonderful app to guide and inform you. I will always remember this visit. Three hours was just right to see everything. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff.
