The staffs are very helpful and friendly, the museum is not big but has some interesting stuff to explore. I like the small science space , wonderful place for kids.

Boring and very white Australia orientated. Walked in to this so called museum with the hope to learn more about the local indigenous history and instead found an underwhelming corner with very little information on the topic. It seems the history of Newcastle is focused on the past 100-200years white settlers but nothing of the rich history of the past 65,000years. The organisers need to open their eyes past the white history and do a much better job to display Australia’s first nations people’s history which is far richer!!!

Fun little "free" place to spend an hour or two. You can obviously go through in a hurry in about 20 minutes, but I suggest, take your time, read the plaques, learn from history and enjoy the 9 minute BHP light and sound show. There are other displays that come through that you can pay for, but the free experience is really good value for money. 😜

Come here often as it's my local museum only about 6 mins walk away. I moved to newie recently and the museum was the first thing I went to. It's really cool, if you ever get the chance to see the light + sound show at the steel/coal BHP workers exhibition, do it! It's free It was so much more fun than I was expecting. Took my mate up from Sydney to come see it too, he loved it. Had us questioning what careers we wanted to do with our lives 😂 Wish it had more Silverchair stuff though! But not a complaint. The museum is easy to guide yourself through and they have new exhibitions that change every so often so I keep in the loop. Sure, it's a smaller museum but 10/10 would recommend. Staff are generally lovely. Old Wallsend Tram is a MUST.

Whilst enjoyable this place reeds more letters on a wall and some pictures with alot lacking and areas closed down. My biggest short Falk was the area for out native original owners was the size of a large closet with only 3 things on the wall 2 being about a traditional boat. I wish more was done as this is the reason I visited the area. The largest thing in the whole place was stuff about a mining company.

I had such a great day exploring this museum with my little one. Great exhibits for young and old, slightly reminiscent of questacon in Canberra where there were heaps of practical science exhibits for my son to enjoy. We also stayed for the talks, and the presenter of the children's science talk was truly amazing!

What a perfect way to spend an afternoon at the museum with my boy, plenty of things to see and do. He got his hands on all kinds of experiments and we had an amazing time.

Although well presented I felt bored, too much reading. The interactive bit was fun but again the info was a bit intricate. Would suggest summarising the instructions next time there’s an upgrade. Very sad to see such a small Aboriginal section.

A great place to bring toddler there, even as adults we learned a lot about Newcastle's history and other things. The day we visited was free, no tickets were required.

The historical section of the museum is quite nice with lots of stories to tell, albeit not that large as it’s all confined to practically one room. The science section is great for kids as it’s completely interactive and there are lots of activities to choose from. If you’re going as just adults, you would probably only visit the historical section which can be covered in 20-30 mins so just take not of that. Also the amenities are well kept! Overall it’s quite an informative museum with lots to learn from, although one small complaint is that some exhibits, such as the automobile, were covered in a heap of dust.

It was such a fantastic day out with the family. The Alice in wonderland exhibit was good, but I especially loved the Newcastle history part.

  • 5/5 Hermione L. 6 months ago on Google
So many beautiful pictures, artifacts and knowledge to learn from. Great place for family, school to have a trip. Free entry for everyone which is awesome as well.

Steel and coal courses through the veins of some many Novocastrians, and this compact museum pays homage to the industries legacy and how it shaped this part of the world. Fascinating collections of metallurgy and Australiana and a great way to kill a couple of hours whilst you’re in town

  • 5/5 Wayne T. 2 years ago on Google
Went there for a work function and what a wonderful setting it is. Beautiful old buildings mixed with some modern tie-ins. Fantastic memorabilia inside as well

  • 5/5 Deb C. 2 years ago on Google
Wonderful museum. Fun for the family, special events are great too

  • 4/5 Duncan B. 5 months ago on Google
As a Novocastrian this was better than I expected having never gone there. Very clean and staff friendly and helpful. Would go again. Kids thought was great. Only lost a star as some exhibits didnt work but overall a great experience. Just re parking. Be careful to be out before your time runs out. Newcastle Brown Bombers work weekends too $$$$$$!

  • 5/5 Himiko M. 2 years ago on Google
There’s many stuff to see some history. Learn many history in Newcastle. So surprised free entry with quality and satisfaction I was happy to pay for it :)

  • 5/5 Amy A. 1 year ago on Google
Took the kids today, easy travel from the central coast, close affordable parking and most of the displays in the museum are free. There is a fantastic hands on display full of science and physics concepts for the kids to explore, including lifting a car! Also has displays on the history of the steelworks and general local history. Great affordable family day out.

Very helpful reception desk, free entry. The Hands-on section is interesting and fun. Pay for parking is nextdoor. Worth the visit. Picture is map of the museum which is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am-5pm (sorry for poor quality, phone camera not the best).

Great museum with interactive exhibits and displays with all sorts of interesting science or forces at play ranging from magnetic field interactions to lever systems that allow the user to casually lift a car with one arm. There was no queue, no wait, and friendly staff were at the door to direct us where we needed to go. 10/10 would visit again.

Im a sucker for history and learning about places I visit. There was so much to learn. Had a range of places within the museum to learn about the different industries and people that shape the history of Newcastle. A must see if you have an hour or two to spare in your trip.

  • 5/5 Chicka B. 3 years ago on Google
A museum behind the information centre in the city of Newcastle that provides free entry to view their exhibits. Found it pretty cool that that held alot of history as well as artefacts about the history of this area. Worth a visit

  • 5/5 Amanda D. 3 years ago on Google
The collection reflected the story of New Castle. Very touching portraits of the community spoke about life in new castle past and present. The pieces were displayed so neatly and were attractive to adore. It's easy to cover the museum in about 1.5hrs and was absolutely worth viewing. Our favourite were the collection of the old commodities goods like Arnot boxes etc. The tram and old engines, the portrait of community stories and the canoe. Loved it and would go there again!

  • 5/5 Karthikeyan N. 3 years ago on Google
It was great to see such a small space packed with more details about various history of new castle and staff were so friendly explaining the paid and free shows and you can choose whichever you opt for.. Nice place in the middle of the city.. Kids would love to learn the history...

On my second last day in Newcastle I thought it was worth popping into Newcastle Museum to learn a bit about the area. It's free although there may be a ticket into special exhibits, but I was greeted by the lovely staff there informing me about a short show on steel making before walking around in the cool surrounds looking at the different sections. Didn't know some famous brands and people started here, certainly walked away with some new information. Definitely worth a visit.

Wonderful museum with about 4 sections. One is about railway and steel making, another one is about immigrant history and some Newcastle based companies. We loved so much steel making light show. You will love this place if you are keen to deep dive into Newcastle history and get understanding of its transformation over the time.
