We didn't plan on staying here but glad we did. The owner Ross was very friendly and helpful. The hostel is a great little place, walking distance from everything you need! Great atmosphere, clean and cosy. Hopefully we will be back one day! Thanks Ross for having us x

I stayed here back in January, but had such a good experience I thought I had to share. Ross the owner is very friendly and was the best host. The accommodation was cozy and walking distance to everything in town. Ross was kind enough to suggest places to go site seeing and out to eat. I enjoyed the lovely chocolates that he brought back from Josephanes chocolate factory. I would highly recommend this hostel.

Best place to stay in the Blue Mountains. Small and cozy hostel with everything you need in a good location with some friendly people. Hostel is walking distance to town and train station and right next to a fruit and vegetable store. Ross (the owner) normally has a fire going every night where you can hang out and meet people.

Ross deserves the stars for this place. It is an old house which is converted into a hostel with a few rooms. Rooms are good sized. There are 2 bathrooms within the main house and a couple more outside, yes outside. Ross is ever helpful in making your stay as comfortable as possible. You need extra sheets, duvets, heater, aircon, bread, jam, tea, etc and if it's within reason, he will help. Bring a bottle of wine and you can enjoy it in outdoor or indoor fireplace. Share with Ross and your new friends. Right around the corner is a liquor store and they are always having sales. It's about 10 minutes to the station and if you want to walk to echo point, it's about 30 minutes.

Made it to the Blue Mountains for some hiking and mountain biking, only to realise I had left my bike's front wheel at home. Ross, the hostel and bike hire owner, was super-helpful, kindly lending me a wheel to get me back on track. Old-fashioned hospitality and kindness that I was really grateful for.

Easily the best hostel i’ve been to in Australia! Thank you to Ross for all the hard work to make flying fox so comfortable and inviting!! The community dinners and breakfasts were great and the proximity to town made my stay here so easy.

Lovely atmosphere that makes it easy to connect with people. There is a comfortable chilling area with a chimney, board games, instruments, sofas and even a really laid-back cat. The whole house is decorated in a decent colourful style and especially the beds were the most comfortable I have seen in any hostel so far. There is free breakfest that doesnt feel like a scam and the owner even cooked for the whole house one evening! There is also a camp-fire every evening that gives this hostel this little extra magic that makes it worth visiting. Only problem are the only three toilets and the stoves that sometimes dont work properly.

Ross, the guy who runs this hostel is a man of big heart and has great empathy for all the guests who come from different walks of life. This hostel has been in Katoomba since 20 years and more. Heaps of photographs on the walls outside the office, speaks volumes. 5 stars for, - The guests are friendly, mostly international backpackers and Aussies who are visiting the blue mountains. - Lovely music that is playing all through the day, the beautiful cat which is part of the lovely family, the evening board games in the living room and the convos at the dinner table. - Chill out zones are the indoor fireplace, fireplace in the backyard, and living room where all the board gamers hang out in the evening. - Then there is pasta night every week, Ross himself cooks pasta for everyone. - From avid climbers to bushwalkers, from professionals who have taken a sabbatical to nomads/wanderers, from city siders to people who have lived in the bush, their stories makes the whole experience enriching! - The hostel is clean - the bathrooms, kitchen and all the public areas. - You don't feel lonely here.

The Flying Fox has such a warm and friendly vibe. I love staying there! Ross is such a great host. :) It's so close to the station. The place is always stocked up with everything you may need. The kitchen is nice and tidy, with plenty of cooking, fridge and panrty space. There's breakfast provided if you want some yummy peanut butter and jelly toast! Haha The communal lounge area is set up around a nice wood fire, with games, musical instruments and big comfy couches and cushions!

We stayed in a private room at the Flying Fox and had an amazing time. The bed and linens were very comfortable and the in room heater was sufficient for the cold evenings. There are indoor and outdoor fire places that keep the common areas nice and warm. It was a very good atmosphere and is in a great location just outside of the main busy areas. There's a lovely cat that hangs around as well so I've added a photo of her enjoying the fireplace.

Had such a lovely stay at Flying Fox, sadly was too short but would love to visit again. Ross was great and made us feel really welcome, as did the other guests - beautiful location, close to train station and the dorm was really spacious!

The best backpackers on the planet! The Flying Fox is the place stay if you want to meet amazing people from around the world and share some blue mountains adventures. The dorms are very comfortable, and you also have the choice of private rooms that are very nice and quiet. The Fox has a fire hut which is on every night of the year, and even has a climbing wall in the backyard! You can also pitch a tent and enjoy the stunning views if that's more your thing. The best thing about the Fox is the awesome and amazing host. Ross is incredible, and will do everything possible to make sure you get the most out of your visit to the gorgeous Blue Mountains. I love this place!

Really nice and cozy hostel. Stayed in a private room for 3 nights which was spacious and had an electric blanket! There was a fire going every evening. The guests were all very friendly and had interesting stories. The owner Ross was a fantastic host and made free pizza one night 10/10. Would definitely recommend for solo travelers or small groups. Best, Scott & Poppy ✌

I had a great stay at FFB recently. It's in a great location, only a short walk from the train station and our room was great. We were lucky with the weather whilst we were there but I loved that we had an electric blanket on the bed. A lot of the people staying in the hostel are working in Katoomba, they were very friendly and the hostel had a nice social vibe. Ross who runs the place was lovely and super helpful with anything we needed. You can tell he cares a lot about keeping the place nice and making sure guests are happy/comfortable. Thanks for a great stay! Lindsay (Been delayed in writing a review, sorry!)

Great experience at this hostel. We stayed in a 7-bed dorm, and luckily had great roommates. Breakfast was included and consisted of toast and several spreads. Ross is a great host, and was very welcoming. We do recommend this place! 👍

An absolute gem of a hostel. Homely, clean, good facilities, free breakfast, great value, lovely social spaces (cosy living room and fire pit outside with good music), an array of board games (Catan, chess, etc) and, most importantly, great company! Ross (the host) is a legend. His knowledge of the area and stories of the comings and goings of the hostel were really enriching. It was refreshing to stay at a hostel where the evident focus was on making it an enjoyable experience for the guests, such as Ross making pasta for everyone one night, rather than doing everything as cheaply as possible. The location is also perfect for hikers without a car, as there’s a bus stop right outside that goes to Blackheath and Wentworth Falls (both have great trails) and it’s short walk from Katoomba train station. Overall, a perfect spot for a get away in the mountains for some stunning hiking, so I would highly recommend. Book direct via the Flying Fox Backpackers website!

Ross make me feel at home! I applause Ross's pasta that he cooks for everyone every week, specially the pesto one. The hostel is well located next to town and to the train station. Comfortable Beds, room and living room. I enjoyed my time at the flying fox. Thanks Ross!

Had a great time at The Flying Fox. Perfect location with great views over the Blue Moutains just a short walk away. Ross was very hospitable and even gave us a lift to the train station because of the rain. Room was very comfortable as was the bed.

My friend and had rented mountain bikes for the day and it was the best decision to go with The Flying Fox. Ross was super friendly, recommended amazing trails to go mountain biking, and provided all the gear we needed for the day including an extra raincoat and tools and spare tubes for the bikes just in case. We felt very well taken care of and he was easy to communicate with and was flexible about our schedule and returning the bikes. We'll definitely be getting mountain bikes from Ross again the next time we visit!

I 100% recommend this place! The vibe is chill and people are very friendly. Ross the owner cooked dinner for everyone, had a bonfire going in the evenings and is very helpful in general, an absolute legend.

Hired bikes from Ross. Very accomodating and even drove us to blackheath because there weren’t any trains running. He’s super friendly and helpful with the bikes. Could perhaps help a little more with routes, we definitely had some issues on the way back.
