Went to the Jeffery Smart exhibition at the NGA and it was absolutely glorious. Not too long that you got bored but not to short that you were wanting more. It was nice to see the artist’s personal progression reflected through the stylistic choices of their work. It was also nice to see many of the same themes appear throughout the exhibition. We were fortunate enough to speak to one of the volunteers who spoke through the exhibition with us, giving us a new perspective, moreover the motives of the artist. Really enjoyed this exhibition and the NGA

Simply amazing gallery in Australia. You really can’t go past the Turrell art piece called within without. The staff who were super helpful showing me where to find it were so friendly! The gallery is well curated, some amazing First Nations art pieces and there are great facilities like the free lockers for oversized bags. I did find though the medium ones weren’t big enough for a backpack and the larger ones were all taken already!

Very good gallery with lots of representation of first nations people and cultures. Their main exhibition when we visited was "Know our Names", it was alright if a bit bland. The permanent exhibitions were excellent however and it was great to finally see blue poles in person. 7.5/10 Excellent.

Nice gallery. Spent about an hour there. There is an paid underground carpark and free open air car park. Free ticket is required to enter the gallery. Backpacks are not allowed but they provide free lock locker. There is also a sculpture garden outdoor.

Definitely a must visit! I spent about 4-5 hours at the gallery and it wasn't enough. There's so much to see and absorb honestly. Great collection of Aboriginal art and sculptures!

Very informative free tour. A bit of a small collection by world wide standards but some variety which was good. Make sure you also check out the outdoor sculptures

We visited National Gallery of Australia and really enjoyed our visit. We were asked to lock our bags in the free lockers before being allowed entry. There are two floors of great art, ranging from nineteenth century till present. The star of the gallery is the Monet. It took us a couple of hours to browse the free galleries. A great place to view works of art. There is also a bookshop and cafe here.

The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra is an artistic marvel! From its stunning architecture to its diverse collection, every corner invites wonder. The exhibitions showcase a rich tapestry of artistic expression, spanning centuries and cultures. The gallery's commitment to accessibility and education makes it a beacon of cultural enrichment. A must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and casual observers alike!

Some very interesting pieces and exhibits, but too much of the place was between empty awaiting new exhibitions. Good stock of books in the shop, but nearly all the prints/posters were of artworks not in the museum at the time. Seems to me if you have active exhibitions and can produce prints etc. of them for sale, then they should be in the shop.

Entry is free, parking is reasonable, amenities sufficient. Generally speaking you can't take handbags inside and must be left in lockers. As for the art the Aboriginal section is great, particularly the watercolour landscapes. However, to this cultural neanderthal some of the modern art seemed implausible (see pic of table legs signifying oppression...). The gardens and the sculptures are wonderful so make sure you go outside.

Wonderful national institution in a modern brutalist style building. Regularly bringing world class exhibitions to Australia. Definitely worth a visit for local Australian, indigenous and European art alike.

The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra is a must see and do when in the Nation's Capital. One of my favourite places to escape into and enjoy an exhibition of pure talent and creativity. The current exhibition "Botticelli to Van Gogh" is mesmerising and was interesting to learn more about the numerous artist's work on display and how they evolved over the centuries. After the exhibition, high tea at the Cafe is a sweet treat to end the visit. Key points to note; *Disable friendly *Parking was free when we visited *Staff were professional. *Venue was clean.

Been back a few times over the years and it’s always a great experience. Free entry to beautiful artworks and lots of it! Can spend all day in the free section and sculpture garden. Didn’t visit a paid exhibition this time but recommend booking tickets for those online as we arrived upon open (10am) and Jeffrey Smart was booked out until 12:30pm.

An interesting space that had a number of special exhibitions on display. Largely seems to be a collection of modern art, with a focus on women artists and indigenous voices at the time of my visit. You must pay to park, and there are a number of other interesting places nearby to visit. Likely not suitable for younger children.

A nice place to visit while in Canberra. The gallery building itself is an interesting space, with nooks to be discovered. In terms of the pieces on display, there is lots to be inspired by within the free parts with an emphasis on indigenous and women artists throughout. This is a Gallery so consider leaving kids at home.

The National Gallery is such a delight on the senses. I've been here only a small handful of times but am always eager to go again. The gallery has curated such a beautiful collection of pieces, each with stories to tell that can inspire creativity and the longing of anyone. The way they interact with their visitors is simply beautiful. The place is truly a favourite of mine when visiting Canberra and a must for all.

The Australian National Art Gallery is a great visit for a day outing. There is a small cafe next to the building but there is not much in terms of food close. The art displays were great with a large variety of style and era. A great place to look at some incredible paintings and sculptures. Not to be confused with the Australian National Portrait Gallery.

I love the National Gallery of Australia! Free entry means no pressure to explore all the magnificent artwork inside and out. You usually need to book online. Make sure you check out skyspace and the sculpture garden outside. This holidays we attended a free kids art workshop which was wonderful. I loved coming here when I had a baby - wide open space meant walking with a pram was easy. Toilets were very pleasant and there is a parents room. I love that many of the exhibitions regularly change. Occasionally exhibitions are laid exhibitions but these are well worth it and usually a special experience. There is coffee at the entrance. Parking is easy but is now paid on Sundays. Highly recommended!

National institution with pleasant staff. Plenty of people about but parking was fine and the 'crowd' didn't interfere with the experience as the place still seemed empty. Entry to the main (non-exhibition) gallery is free to the public though you'll need tickets - which you can get at the entrance.

Wow, was amazing to see blue bars and the Kelly series at this amazing gallery. We were disappointed with how much of the gallery was closed for new exhibitions. I know it takes time to set in new exhibits but surely you could plan better so more of the gallery is open. Thanks!

One of my favourite places to explore art inside and outside. Enjoy taking my small child who loves exploring all different types of art and then coming home to create their own. Perfect place for a romantic date. ❤️ Also a nice place to enjoy some time to yourself or just enjoy the beauty of Canberra while experiencing art from around the world. Amazing Indigenous Art exhibitions with lots of information on the culture and historical significance of the art.

I have been here before and loved it. This time we didn't go in but rather exploited the sculptures outside in the gardens near the lake. What a wonderful spot. Lovely green grass and surprises where ever we turned with good views across the lake. We did the exploring on our bikes and I think this was a great way to see a different side of Canberra

Due to COVID, the entry to the museum is timed. The entry windows are quiet generous, so make sure you book ahead online. There seems to be a few exhibitions closed (we visited on 23 August), but there is enough to warrant your attention for about 3-4 hours.

The NGA hosted our wedding ceremony in April. We used the sculpture gardens near the Angel of the North and spilling over towards the Knot. I was so impressed with the service, from the moment of our first enquiry, through all my difficult bride questions, to the day of. We had staff on hand to pack up/down, serve drinks, provide support throughout the entire event, keep us on track and make sure everyone was happy and well looked after. The gallery itself looks FANTASTIC in our pictures, and that alone would have impressed me even without the fantastic service. I could not fault anything, and highly recommend them to any couple looking for a unique and beautiful venue for their wedding.

One of Australia's finest Art Galleries, the world-class National Gallery of Australia is located semi-conveniently in Canberra (ACT). Annual events and famous exhibits are always worth the effort to view in person. There are also permanent exhibits on display and numerous outdoor sculptures in the gardens surrounding the Gallery. Of note in recent memory was the Versailles Exhibit and the Pre-Raphaelites. The gallery is presently running on Covid-19 precautions but access is fine and the only restrictions are on numbers of people entering the main buildings at any given time. Parking is a little tricky to navigate so it's worth arriving a little early if you're attending an exhibit with a set starting time. Staff are courteous, helpful and professional. I also observed extremely observant and professional behavior between the Gallery's security staff and members of the public. Wonderful to see.

This gallery hosts some really significant collections of Indigenous and post-colonial Australian art, as well as some pieces from other countries. I loved the Sidney Nolan collection, full of colour and movement and Nolan’s iconic dark humour. My favourite was ‘The Aboriginal Memorial’, a collection of hollow log coffins painted by Indigenous people from Arnhem Land in memory of those who lost their lives in colonial frontier conflicts. There is so much meaning and power in these amazing works of art, in the history and culture of the hollow log coffins, and in the artwork on them which reflects the different landscapes, totems, and culture of the individual artists. I found this installation incredibly powerful, and I am thankful the Gallery has it on display to remind and inspire all visitors. The NGA gift shop is fabulous. A huge variety of items, from souvenir pencils to top quality coloured pencils and watercolours, gift and clothing items featuring art prints, poster sized art prints and an extensive art book collection. The prices are very fair for the excellent quality of the items available.

A beautiful and large art gallery with such a great collection (and free entry!) At the moment they have an inspiring exhibition "Know My Name" featuring Australian Women artists from 1900 to now. If you are unable to make it, there will be a part 2 mid 2021. A must see!!

I went there back in February 2007 with my dad to see the Egyptian Antiquities from the Louvre exhibition for my 30th birthday. On a hot day so the climate was suitable, and there were many works from another time such as illustrated manuscripts, personal ornaments and ceramics. I remember there was one ceramic work in the shape of Jabba the Hutt that was used as a lid for a sarcophagus, and also another sarcophagus carved in stone, made for a women, with hieroglyphs on the outside that would have taken a lot of patience to complete.

Came here in April for the Botticelli to Van Gogh exhibit. Was lucky to arrive by taxi from the airport, parking looked to be quite busy. The outside of the building is quite modern, but found the interior quite outdated. Nothing like the NGV in Victoria. Staff were very good with dealing with crowds. Would happily return for another exhibit.
