A very good professional mental facility. Treats multiple disorders, in a caring yet supportive environment. Patients tend to be friendly and community minded. Food can be up and down, but considering the diverse patient base is of good quality for the majority of the time. Staff are supportive and caring as well as being friendly or firm when required. Beds and rooms are kept clean and maintained regularly, and fresh linen is available for patients at all times. Programs are comforting and supportive whilst still being challenging. I personally found found growth as well as calm and recovery, and enjoyed my time spent as a patient. I learnt a lot of valuable lessons which will help me cope with difficult situations. I thoroughly recommend this hospital for mental health recovery in a peaceful supportive and community minded group. The facility itself has a calming and peaceful enironment, and for those who are religious there is oastoral care as well as a chapel where either you can refkect quietly or attend the weekly services. Considering the location it is also within walking distance of Burwood for shopping or entertainment and food options.

This place is a sinking ship. The staff are unhappy, have been there too long and openly whinge about their situation. It's not about taking care of the patients anymore. They lost that a long time ago. The food is terrible now. It's a very lonely place, with staff taking no action to arrange activities for patients at night. It's designed in a very isolated format so people are separated from each other. The only place to be around other people is in the smokers place which is poorly set up right outside the back door. If you don't smoke, you'll be spending most of your time alone. The nurses are not trained in dealing with client conflict, so when patient to patient bullying occurs theres no protection. The psychologist facilitating the program had no control over the group and there was no learning taking place. It was a waste of time. I was processing trauma, which the staff didn't seem to understand and they refused to hold my hand or put an arm around me for comfort. I left two weeks early in a terrible state. much worse than when I went in. AVOID this place! I just remembered another experience I had there....in art therapy group, I started crying quietly and the staff member told me to stop crying because she didn't want me to 'set off the others'. So wrong and emotionally abusive. Really damaging. Crying is exactly what I needed to do to express my pain and heal Why the hell is she being paid to work there. I was told by other clients that she also works in the outpatient DBT program at St John of God.

Booked an appointment with a psychiatrist in March - the earliest I could get in for a visit was July. I was a day late for the appointment as I had not been sent a reminder for this and assumed the wrong date. Most companies send out a reminder email/text/call at least two days prior. I got nothing, lost my deposit and couldn’t even re-book in for “until next year” because they were just far too busy. I started crying in the reception and they just stared at me until I left. Absolutely never felt so worthless for such a simple mistake that wasn’t entirely my fault. For a mental health clinic; there is no empathy to be seen. No care for clients. Not even a “do you need a tissue?” While they stood beside a box of them (behind glass). I thought you were meant to be kind god honouring people. What a joke.

Told me they could not provide help for my adhd, bpd, depression and anxiety. Also won’t provide my medical records for over 3 years after several attempts by different medical professionals

Please remove GOD for the name if you’re organisation. GOD is about giving GOD is about compassion GOD is about understanding. I waited 3 month for a telephone consultation with a mental health doctor. $500 for a 45 minute consultation that was worthless. Put me on the wrong medication I nearly killed my self. After advising the doctor I felt like killing my self because of the state the medication put me in I was told to contact my GP as he could no longer help me. Shame

The girl on the front desk is RUDE, LOUD and COMPLETELY INCONSIDERATE of people and their sensitivities... which is not what I would hope for a mental health care facility. I can think of a million people who could do her job better.... sort it out guys. Please.

If I could rate this place 0 stars I would. I wish I had read the reviews before admission, because it truly is just as awful as all of the reviews make it out to be. The nurses, despite a few, namely Janet and Chloe they were amazing, are so uneducated. They ask inappropriate questions in front of groups of people, i.e waiting for medication, at the nurses' station, and most have no idea what is going on. Communication was absolutely atrocious, among the nurses AND the allied health team. They say one thing and it either never happens OR someone says something entirely opposite. The after hours NUM is incredibly harsh and honestly rude. The duty of care was 0, and there was no patient centred care. I discharged myself after 3 horrific days.

Edit: I did. They called and brushed me off, no follow up. It's scary that you can treat someone this way after they've reached out for help. We were admitted to the mums and baby unit due to my mental health. We were kicked out 20mins after being admitted because our daughter had a lingering cough that was not contagious. We had covid tests and a GP note stating it was not contagious and is a cough that would last months. I explained all this before admission last week and was told it was fine. We were kicked out after travelling hours and after being admitted. Zero duty of care for a mother with PPD and PPA. We had to travel into the city to find a hotel. If you are a suffering mother don't bother. Go see your GP and get help elsewhere

Would not recommend to my worse enemy! The staff are not on the same page so depends who is on how your medication will be delivered which is stinks of unprofessionalism I was put under observation level 1 which means a nurse is ment to check on me every single hour so I didnt harm my self and I was only check on once after I told the nurses that I was extremely upset and having thoughts of self harm which is a serious lack of duty of care and not surprisingly I did end up harming myself so PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE! OR IF YOU ARE THINKING OF CHECKING YOUR SELF IN LOOK ELSEWHERE! - PS the food is also terrible and none of the content that is ment to be covered is actually covered in the groups and classes! DO NOT COME HERE!

Lack of duty of care! When I discharged my self only after I had gone through the whole process I was told that I couldnt not take my medication home with me (anti-depressants, mood stabilisers sleeping medication and many more!) This was extremely destressing to me. The male nurse Gueri not sure if thats correct but Indian looking chap that told me that I could not take the meds that I bought and paid for home said that I could collect them on Monday I discharged on Friday and that left me with out medication for the entire weekend! Roll around to Monday and call up they say that no who ever told me that I cold collect them on Monday was "not telling the truth" and that I couldnt get my medication returned at all!!! Im thinking this has to be a joke but no apparently not I am appalled at the lack of duty of care of the entire place, there are drugs everywhere through out the place terrible search of belongings into the place you can get anything past them would not recommend to anyone! I will be looking at legal action to have my medication returned to me or compensation of the value of the medication plus the distress caused by your inexperienced unprofessional team!

***Edited to add- you said to contact head office. I’ve tried. I’ve sent about 5 emails to that address and also left probably 3 messages with head office for someone at management to call me back. Still nothing. So please don’t refer people to take their complaints to somewhere that won’t address them (but makes you look good on the google reviews like you care and are proactive in fixing problems, because you’re not). This hospital used to be good. However over the past 6 months it has gone down. Management, Cindy shows to empathy or compassion. When she rung all the patients that were doing maintenance TMS to tell them that they were no longer offering TMS maintenance she was very blunt and showed no empathy. Couldn’t give a reason. Found out later through other patients it had to do with private health insurance issues. There was so much miscommunication between staff around this causing great frustration. Cindy didn’t handle the situation well with patients, let alone staff. No wonder the Hospital is falling apart. The vibe from other patients has also been very negative over the past 6 months. Programs are also outdated. Also head office will not return any of my calls or emails to head office. Several messages and emails and still nothing. And that just sums up their care for dealing with patients with a mental illness.

This place is as bad as it gets in the private sector. They've caused significantly more harm than good and have been the direct cause of a laundry list of suicides over the last 7 years at least. I strongly suggest that as many people lodge complaints and accurate reviews against this place as possible - it'll save lives.

The practice does not offer Escripts and forced me to come in to the practice in person, instead of mailing the script as they usually do. Today I had to take time off work and travel to the centre, which left me $80 out of pocket and behind in work. All after being informed of raised fees. Had the hospital offered E-Scripts, this could have been avoided. I used to think the hospital was great but I now realise they’re cheap and rubbish.

I had an appointment that was confirmed then cancelled upon them learning I am of Aboriginal descent. This action was originally done by Dr Miah from there. Who completely changed wanting to see me when he heard of my heritage. After speaking to their staff there was availability to see other Psychiatrists there that were then also cancelled and I was informed no vacancy(even after they had verbally advised spaces were available) that can only be left with them not wanting to see me because of of my heritage. They also sat on being able to see me for so long that now trying to get another appointment elsewhere is impossible for this year and it is my belief they have purposely carried out their actions knowing my desperation to see a Psychiatrist. I can only try and google to see how I can have the discrimination dealt with. Lucky for me I have not only been able to prove to a lawyer but they will help me act in the discrimination that Dr Miah and St John of God did to me They’re legal just got in touch with me saying I needed to remove my review .

The reception girl is very rude. To make an appointment, a deposit of 100 dollars is required, and a deposit of personal credit card information is required. There will be no problem, right? If you don't give your credit card information, you must have to come and pay the deposit face-to-face. I also knew for the first time that an appointment had to pay a deposit and provide personal credit card information. reception girl, you have no problem, do you? 🤔😱😱

I would rate this disgusting facility -5 STARS if possible. Badly Cochroache infested facility, sewerage system is so appalling it is breeding black flying bugs even in the mums & bubs unit. My plumber said it is due to very poor sewerage installation & these bugs are extremely difficult to eradicate. There was only 1 grp on a day. Cleanliness is putrid. Bed mattresses are so old & sagging. Furniture is embedded with filth, it all needs to be tossed in2 a skip bin for burning. Only clean furniture is what you see in reception. This place reminds me of the dirtiest boarding houses that exist in Sydney (as shown on SBS TV). Staff just hand out pills. They are completely apathetic & are not delegated to any patients as ones primary care nurse. There is no care, even the psychiatrists are employed by this egregious facility, so they are effectively gagged from advocating for their patients even though they are all well aware of the exploitation being perpetrated upon clients who are at their most vulnerable. Having been a Functions & Events manager for my ex husband's 3 clubs, I am quite ofay with food pricing. They would rehash food from lunch in2 food for dinner. Mostly all curries & the like. I estimated a daily budget per patient of approximately $8.70 being the highest dollar value spent. The nursing unit manager is the most viscious, abusive, nefarious woman I have ever met. Her conduct was so seriously egregious I would implore ANYONE in need of a quality mental health inpatient service to STAY WELL AWAY FROM THIS PUTRID, APPALLING FACILITY. IT SHOULD BE KNOCKED DOWN. There are some exceptional private clinics in & close to Sydney as well as interstate - THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST IN EVERY AREA. IF U THOUGHT U NEEDED SUPPORT UPON ADMISSION - U R GOING TO REQUIRE AN AWFUL LOT MORE TO HEAL FROM SUCH AN OVERTLY NEGLECTFUL, HEINOUS ADMISSION. GOOGLE "best private mental health clinics NSW" there are a number of new, well appointed private clinics, offering superior quality facilities, providing fresh produce, and tailored support. all have zero negative reviews 😊

The staff were caring, sympathetic and knowledgeable, especially the nurses. My room was very comfortable and the food was fantastic. In addition to medical treatment, they equipped me with effective methods of managing my psychological symptoms. I particularly valued the friendship and mutual support provided by fellow patients experiencing similar issues. After my time at SJOG Burwood I was able to function normally again. I want to extend a big thank you to everyone the hospital that helped me reclaim my life again.

Highly recommend St John of God Burwood. I was there for 3 weeks and can not say one bad thing. The nurses were compassionate, caring and very professional. My specialist and her registrar were excellent with my care and very attentive to my needs. The hospital/rooms were very clean. The food was great, much variety. Gym was a great bonus for me as I am a very active person. The Cafe sold really great coffee and snacks. WELL DONE !!!

Poor level of professionalism and care. The place is old and really needs updating. Apparent strict smoking/vaping rules for patients to follow but I would go outside to try and get fresh air only to have have cigarette polluted air from patients (and some staff) smoking and vaping OUTSIDE the designated area? On another note, a confused older male patient walked into my room without knocking to which I reported to staff , nothing was done about it, he kept doing this multiple times and it traumatised me further. Struggling with sleep issues already, why they moved me to a mum and baby unit, was kept awake by crying babies and not asked about how this would affect me, or if I have ever lost pregnancy in the past, in the end left me more traumatised than ever. No consideration for individual's needs. Also kitchen staff need mental health training lol, As someone who has battled an eating disorder I was pretty shocked when asking for more food, the woman questioned 'Really, More?'. Do better.

Very dissappointed and judgemental of certain mental health symptoms, (not zero tolerance as I was told for a common symptom of a mental illness) perhaps some empathy would be more appropriate. Isn’t your facility a mental health facility or do you just pick and choose what mood disorders or symptoms you are willing to accept. The trauma that has now been caused for my daughter is dangerous and cruel. If your psychiatrist Dr. Miah didn’t want to treat her why accept her admission. He was rude and devoid of empathy from the start according to my daughter. Discarding someone when they are in crisis is quite frankly disgusting. Mixed messages from staff regarding hospital policy just adds more trauma. If they don’t want to treat certain mental health conditions don’t accept the admission. There is enough stigma around BPD than mental health facilities adding to it. Your NUM could do with some additional training in advocating & compassion for patients. Supporting your mental health and wellbeing….I think NOT!

Absolutely disgusting- the admissions team could give anyone a nervous breakdown- kept calling me by a different name, kept losing my files, I called 12 times & was assessed 3 times as they didn’t take notes. Then told a bed would be available in o e week then 4 - the women admissions Caroline & her gang of utterly moronic & unprofessional half wits spoil this otherwise great hospital. The Drs & facilitators & nurses are great, great program - food is average as are the tiny rooms & tiny beds - if you are over 6 foot don’t expect a comfortable sleep. Can be noisy but if brought to nurses attention it’s fine. Just got accepted into another hospital which is amazing in Bronte - The Sydney clinic on the same day as the call whereas St John of God are saying everyone has Covid which is obviously utter rubbish. Again a pity had to give it one star as a nightmare dealing with admin as normally I would rate it highly.

They staff care to a degree, nice premises and the groups are amazing and I highly recommend them, but Head Management has alot to answer for, in regards to empathy and compassion for its patients and their best interests at heart. I have never been degraded by someone who is the face of St John of God. I don't think they thrive for this. I have been going there for 13 years with not much progress. It was a traumatic experience and felt unsafe which for a private hospital is not very professional. I will never be returning. I will take this disgraceful and traumatised experience to the highest state and private sector i can. The CEO contacted me but I have heard no feedback regarding any disciplinary action taken against the staff member. Im still traumatised by the event to this day

I was on hold for 2 hours before giving up on trying to get through to reception (see photo). My reason for calling was an appointment with a psychiatrist the next day. I won’t name the psychiatrist, suffice it to say the experience was bad. He didn’t smile, was disinterested and judgemental, and gave minimal advice that was of a very general nature (I think he was reading from Google). I basically paid to watch a man raise his eyebrows a few times.

They're not interested in new patients. Had a referral sent to them three weeks ago, rang up multiple times, confirmed it was received and confirmed no action has been taken to book me in. No point in waiting for them, just find another practice that's interested in patients.

Highly recommended. I was very scared before coming to rehab. Once admitted I realised I am in very good hands. The admission staff were very quick in responding considering my condition. Admission went smoothly. The room and facilities were very neat and tidy. Staff was very polite, friendly and professional. Excellent food. I wish I could give more than five stars. Thank you guys for taking care of me. The program and classes designed are very helpful in in understanding and fighting against addiction.I am taking some tools with me which will be very helpful in my addiction

Scheduled an initial appointment to see Dr Miah. He was running 35 minutes late. I tried calling and emailing reception, only to have to spend 40 minutes collectively on hold. The first time I called they told me Dr Miah was running late with another patient, then the second time I called (after being on hold for 20 minutes each time I called) they finally told me they sent the zoom link to the wrong email, even though I had sent them my documents via my email and had emailed several times to ask for the zoom link. Now I can't have my appointment I paid almost $500 for. Worst $500 I have ever spent.

Can't ever seem to get through on the phone. Worse is that sometimes they leave early so the call goes to voicemail. They charge the deposit but that is not 100% refundable.

Absolutely appalled at the treatment of my son who has been attending SJOG for the past twenty years when he was unwell. I believe they have new management which might account for the disgusting treatment of my son during his last two visits. My son felt the nurses were his friends and he relied on their support. Sadly that was not the case. He was involuntarily discharged. I have asked twice for the reasons for this but have not received an answer.

It needs updating. The food is nice and there is a lot of it. My only disappointment is that once your settled they while change you room without giving you a choice . I discharged earlier than I should have because they did not value my individual needs . Chopping and shuffling patients around from single room to shared room is n always necessary. It should be done on a needs basis.

I have been to a few rehab facilities and every time I left I felt incomplete, scared, on more medications than I did when I arrived, was impossible to see a doctor, psychiatrist, terrible food and more. Saint John of God is wonderful. The Best I have been to. Great facilities gym, art, reading rooms, excellent food never sent it back or cringed the thought of it. Staff no matter how much is thrown at them…..they remain nice happy caring very caring come to think about it. My psychiatrist I saw 2-3 times a week, worked with me in my journey showed respect at all times and cared! This road is hard I know that but in this facility you will get out what you put in! Very happy x patient. Thanks guys.

My psychiatrist , Dr Keith Chee, at SJOG Burwood, has provided me with excellent care for 24 years. I see Dr Chee frequently. I have had over 50 successful admissions to SJOG BURWOOD since 1995. Dr Chee has shown me outstanding loyalty and dedication over the years. The hospital has shown me loyalty and compassion over the years. However, I have moved on to another private psychiatric hospital.

Need support, please go elsewhere. The facilitator's are amazing. Ends right there. When in need please find somewhere that does not have nursing politics or anyone that has a clue about mental health. If you need help desperately, you will immediately be put into the to hard basket by staff. As I said though, group facilitators are great. A good tip; the more aggressive you are, more likely to get a bed. Tip number two, the less you attend groups when you are there, also, more likely to get a bed. Tip Number 3, you try your best and they don't want you back. Get better, get well, stay safe and go where people actually give af.
