I have an extreme soft spot in my heart for The Sound of Music. My grandmother loved that movie so much. I have always been told, by my grandmother and mother, that you can’t even breach the gate so imagine how excited I was that not only could I breach the gate but I could peak inside the church. Not only are you able to see where some of the exterior movie shots were taken you’re able to actually go inside where the real Maria and Captain Von Trapp were married. They don’t charge a fee but there is a place to leave a donation and take a candle. The church was described as too “simple”to film the wedding scene at on the Sound of Music tour but I disagree with Hollywood. This abbey/ church is beautiful. The inside was gorgeous- It’s peaceful and perfect. Please, be respectful as you enter- it’s still a working abbey and I would hate for them to be so annoyed they lock the gates. This is worth the hike and it’s worth the hype. The views of the mountains are stunning and my only wish is that I could have seen the entire abbey and spoke with the nuns about their day to day lives.

The place where the moms sing in the sound of music with views on the mountains where the shot the hills are alive. Small monetary a bit dark, but you can light a candle.

This is a beautifully maintained cemetery with graves dating back several centuries. Very interesting just walking through and reading the inscriptions. Certainly worth a visit.

Off the beaten track on the side of the Mönchsberg and just a few minutes to walk lies this gem of a historical building and what must be one of the most scenic cemeteries on the planet. The best thing is the peace and quiet. Try not to disrupt it.

A working abbey that happens to be the filming location for the sound of music exterior shots of the abbey gate. Lovely that it can be visited, but it is quite the hike.

The small gothic style church is very beautiful. Ancient and mysterious. There are guided tours. I liked it very much.

They ask for silence but do allow visitors to enter. Great to see. You'll need to be careful of times as it is still a working Abbey with its own events you don't want to disturb.

Compared with the hustle and bustle of the touristy places such as the fort and old town this place had the calm and tranquility of space that only this kind of space can deliver. So if you want a break that will allow you a moment of self reflection this is it.

It's a beautifull monestry. The walk up is nice. And the chrurch is very quiet and peacefull. My girlfriend told me this monestry is taking part in the Sound Of Music movie. Hence the picture of the enterance gate! At this gate the kids Von Trapp are looking for Maria👍

Nonnberg Abbey is in fact the oldest nunnery in German-speaking countries that is still working coninously since its construction in 714. It is a catholic church of romanesque and gothic style. The abbey became popular through movies based on Maria Augusta Kutschera life, who became a postulant in the abbey in early 20th century, including The Sound of Music. For me it was fascinating to climb there and enjoy the picturesque view and peaceful, soothing silence of the church and surrounding.

I couldn't get inside but it looks good! The nuns we're very nice and polite. It's so quiet all you could hear is the nuns singing. Although I couldn't see inside the Abey is still awesome me and my parents took a photo. I really recommend visiting here as a tourist.

Lovely church with great ambiance. Intimate cemetery just outside. Beautiful view from outside. Please keep quiet and be respectful if and when visiting as this is a place of worship.

enchanting… a peaceful place. It has two huge and beautiful trees in front of it. The view to the city is very beautiful too. If you are the sound’s of music fan you can find the gate she closes when she starts to sing, ‘I have confidence’.

It's hard to rate places like this as opinion is so subjective! None of us are religious or fans of TSOM. I love architecture and old religious architecture is usually spectacular, so I personally enjoyed looking around the place. My husband has no interest so didnt go inside, the 2 teenage kids came in so they didnt feel like they were missing something I think. We all enjoyed the walk up the meandering stairs to the convent and the view over the Dome area of Salzburg. It's worth going up there even if its just for the view.

I love it - and the view! Be prepared to climb the stairs on the way up the monastery - just take your time and wear comfortable walking shoes.
