Fantastic romantic church. We get there by chance as we had to get off the highway to get gas and found this beautiful place. One of the most authentic I have ever seen in Europe, and I drove some thousands miles in Spain, France, Italy and Germany.

The building is great, just don't attend a service if you understand Portuguese. He will tell you that you are all evil sinners, condemn you as bad and rant on as if it was the 19th century. Try a better Church if you want a wedding, christening, funeral or whatever, that is if he doesn't reject you as a sinner first!

The medieval monastery of Rates is a National Monument and is one of the most important in the Romanesque art in Portugal. It worths a visit specially if you are in nearby Caminho Português de Santiago.

Great example of a basic medieval church (1100-1200). There are a few placards that give its history, but no one there to speak with. Still in use today, so it does have electricity, but most aspects are centuries old. Part of a pilgrimage trail.
