A hidden gem of a museum right on of the main shopping streets in Avignon (rue Joseph Vernet). The museum is free and, if you visit in the summer, it is also wonderfully air conditioned. The museum is a the traditional fine arts sort, but with a mix of Roman statues, impressionist paintings, an Egyptian collection and a collection of large classicist tableaus. Given that the museum is free it is hard to complain, but the 2nd floor which is a large part of the collection is not always open.

A fine museum worth searching out if you enjoy Renaissance painting and especially the French Romantic period, works you won't see anywhere else. Many fine examples of marble sculpture from the 19th century. Plus a very well-displayed collection of Egyptian artfacts, including rare female sarcophagi.

Along one of the main shopping streets in Avignon (rue Joseph Vernet) is the Musee Calvet, located in a beautiful multi-level villa. The museum is a the traditional fine arts sort, but with a larger than usual number of statues and sculptures which are all well done and interesting to view. While we visited in December, the building would offer a cool respite for those visiting in the much warmer summer months...and, it was FREE. Unfortunately the second floor was closed so we were only able to view a portion of the exhibit (hence the 4 instead of 5 stars).

This is one of the museums that are now free in Avignon as of spring this year. It has a nice eclectic collection of statues, paintings and Egyptian pieces. The paintings often have good descriptions (in French) giving you some contextual background. The second floor has some real gems and the courtyard and golden accented main gate is quite lovely. Worth a visit.

Friendly people and a nice building, but perhaps due to underfunding and lack of sufficient staff, a lot was closed off. I accidentally wandered into the room with “Northern Masters” and was politely asked to leave the room because it was not accessible. Such a pity! Access is free, but I’d rather pay something if that means that it can be fully open.

A free museum with considerable amount of collection of sculptures, art and other rare objects. I especially liked the exhibition they had on paintings of Avignon through the ages. The staff there are also friendly and helpful.

A beautiful mansion, very friendly staff, a fantastic presentation of an exceptional collection. Bravo Municipality of Avignon for these FREE Cultural Offerings for ALL.

The Musée Calvet is a little and nice spot. A small and selected exhibition combined with a very special architecture.

I enjoyed this little museum a lot. The day I went admission was free. It houses a very eclectic collection ranging from Egyptian antiquities to modern and points in between. The museum is housed in an old mansion and some of the galleries and staircase still retain the flavor of times long ago. The highlights for me were the mille fleur tapestry, which I could have spent hours gazing at and the personal letters of the artist/sculpturess Camille Claudel. Just a note, there is some restoration going on and the upstairs was closed the day I went there.

Great way to spend an hour or two. Some gems among the many wonderful pieces of art created by artists that I did not recognize but was glad to learn about at this free, well organized museum!

Absolutely fabulous little museum and art gallery. Some well known artists pop up amongst the lesser known and the unknown. There is a Christ on the cross carved out of elephant ivory from 1659 that is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever seen. The detail is gorgeous. It was my favourite piece and I was going to see the Brueghel(s). Oh, and it is free so no excuse. Go.

This museum was one of the highlights during our visit in Avignon. Amazing, peaceful museum. A little bit hidden. When we were there it was not busy at all. The garden is a bonus to this museum. I would visit Avignon again, only to visit this museum again with a loved one.

Definitely worth a visit - especially as a cool respite from the heat. It's an interesting and somewhat eclectic collection in a lovely building. I was particularly engaged by the Egyptian artefacts.

Pretty museum in an old palace, with a good collection of old paintings, some more modern, local painters, few antiques and sculptures. Not too big, free and we'll arranged! To visit!

Very interesting and varied collection with everything from Egyptian artifacts and Greek sculpture to more modern 20th century paintings. Worth taking and hour or two over. The Dutch masters were my favourites, so full of life.

Free when we visited. Pretty cool little museum with statues and paintings. A lot of religious type people falling on each other or looking at the sky art, but there's a couple of remarkable pieces and there are much worse ways to spend an hour or two on a hot day. Cool building, too
