A modern museum with lots to see. Very helpful and friendly staff, no problem with just English. The barge is especially worth to look a bit closer on. The only let down was that many signs of the exhibits are in French only... Google lens works well but is a bit tiring in the long run.

Located just outside the old city of Arles...about a 15 minute walk from the edge of the city or a 4 minute drive...this is a spacious and modern museum focusing on the Roman history of Arles. While the show case is the old freight barge recently unearthed and proudly displayed I found the models representing the important structures within Arles to be more fascinating as it gave a sense of scale and perspective. The museum does not take a lot of time to walk through, about 30-45 minutes and if you are into Roman history than it is certainly a worthwhile visit. PARKING: There is small lot on site (about 40 spots) + an additional lot up the street (less than 5 minute walk) for another 65 spots. If during peak season and you had already found a parking spot in the city, I would think it would be better to walk from the city than to attempt finding a parking spot.

This was a fantastic museum on the Roman history of Arles and Provence. I was highly surprised about the quality of the exhibits. Not all are translated into English, but the major ones are. Very well laid out. This museum places quality above quality. Easy to see within a 2 hour window or less, if you need to push it. Within walking distance of city center. There is on-site parking if you are driving.

An interesting museum going into the background of the Romans. Probably one to two hours of wandering. Some amazing mosaics from floors of villas along with a wooden boat that was actually pulled up from the bottom of the Rhône. A bit tuned towards French but enough English for us to understand. Nice stop.

Very well made museum in Arles! The central piece of the exposition is the "Arles Rhône 3" an ancient Roman boat found less than 15 years ago. A 31-meter boat found in the Rhône in 2004. The discovery and restoration of the boat is displayed in a very well made movie. The rest of the exposition displays great pieces of the ancient Arles and its surroundings. Actual pieces of buildings, statues, model, mosaics, etc... The museum is not too big not too small. Very accessible for wheelchair and for kids. The friendly staff at the entrance will either suggests a guided visit with the kids or to provide you with a tablet that the kids can use to guide themselves in the museum. Overall this is a great museum to visit while in Arles (or the area).

Great archeological museum about the Roman history of the region of Arles, France. Artifacts including some fabulous mosaics and a 2000 year old barge pulled from the bottom of the Rhone. Also has models of the Arles colosseum and theatre. You can visit those ruins in Arles also.

On our trip, we stopped for a few days in beautiful Arles. With my wife, we also visited the museum, especially famous for the discovery of a Roman head, which is said to be Caesar's. The other finds, the ship and the statues are also exceptional.

Fascinating display highlighting the history of Arles from the Late Neolithic through the decline of the Romans. So many New discoveries just in this century like the 30 m barge uncovered after a flood in the Rhône in 2002. Most descriptions are not in English so I would suggest getting the auto guide which was excellent. Loved the open and spacious building layout conducive to letting your eye lead you to the next interesting exhibit. I did not find the large area of sarcophagus at the end very interesting but the tiles were. Great bargain with the Arles monument and museum pass, Take “A” bus for 1 euro from George Clemenceau Boulevard.

Worth the short walk from the centre, this stunning museum has remarkable reminders of the Roman past of Arles. The early Christian sarcophagi are just wonderful and I've never seen anything like the cargo ship recovered from the river bed.

A must see in Arles... What I did not exactly like is the audio guide. I think it could have been done better. Other than this, the museum is very nice. The main attraction is the roman commercial transport ship found in the Rhone. The documentary regarding the restauration of the ship is amazing.

Amazing artefacts in this museum with about 40% of panels translated into English (and Spanish) - it was frustrating that the rest of the panels were French only and quite technical language. But it is definitely worth a visit - some of the stuff is superb

With Arles' strong Roman Imperial presence, this is a must see! Unexpected exhibits include a Roman cargo-ship excavated from the nearby river. The museum includes displays of most aspects of life and death. The mosaics are a must see, as are the examples of gold and silver jewelry. Also unexpected is a verified life-bust of Julius Caesar that was found nearby. If you are interested in Romans, this museum needs to be on your bucket-list.

Amazing museum where the galo Roman history seems in motion again. You will discover what was life behind the legacy of the magnificent monuments of this important Roman city and country side. Facing the facts that life was not so different from ours and how sofisticted and organized the roman world was (fluvial transportation and outstanding restauration to highlight as you will see). Because somewhere, we are all the barbarian heirs of that glorious civilization which has been able for centuries to integrate the best of all their comptempory world (Greek, Egyptian, Celtics, Persian, Iberian, African etc.) and unify all those people for the glory of what Rome was simbolizing to all. A real achievement that no other nation or empire has been able to realize since...

We went on a night where entrance was free. But what is contained is worth paying for. Remnants of antiquity... A history over 2000 years old telling it's story. The ancient people were much more amazing than we see in movies and hear in stories.

Great museum of Roman art and antiquities in Arles. The big barge and the almost perfectly preserved mosaics are unique objects, that you will only find here.

  • 5/5 Phillip S. 5 years ago on Google
An absolutely superb museum, we were fascinated by the range and type of exhibits, which are well laid out and with clear information. The Roman boat, recovered from the mud of the river Rhone nearby was a particular favourite. There are also well-reconstructed mosaics and a huge number of sarcophagi The building is modern and spacious, so even though we were on a day when entry was free we did not feel crowded. Highly recommended to anyone who is even remotely interested in the times around the Roman period in Provence.

An overwhelming amount of information and exhibits to take in. Really need several visits to appreciate it all. The video about how the Roman wooden barge was recovered and restored is truly fascinating in particular. Seeing how Arles developed in Roman times also gives a whole new level of insight when walking around the town too. Highly recommended.

A modest entry fee gets you in to a modern and light exhibition of a wide variety of artifacts, including sarcophagi, sculptures, architectural pieces and quite a bit found at the bottom of the Rhône river. Plenty of dioramas showing how things looked in the past. If you don't read French well, then get the audio guide as only a small part of the text is in English.

  • 3/5 Océane B. 3 years ago on Google

Magnificent. A museum not to be missed showing to Roman history of Arles. Well curated and displayed delightfully with enough information plus very knowledgeable staff, keen to assist, throughout. Plenty parking and we'll worth the detour out of the town.

Beautifully curated and laid out. My favourite area was the ship raised from the bottom of the Rhone together with all the amazing artefacts found in the silt - glassware, jewellery, amphorae etc. Also loved the spaciousness of the exhibition that allowed you to wander among the exhibits and gasp in awe. Another highlight is the museum garden that houses loads of information about the Roman attitude to gardening and outdoor leisure.

A museum which seemed to have a nice collection but didn't want to share it with non-french speakers. That is certainly their right. Our only response is not to go and pay their admission. I wish I had followed my own advise.

The museum is good and can see they put a lots of efforts in it especially the good job on the boat! However, it could be much better if they can put “English” for the explanations and not merely French.. we didn’t learn anything from the museum except the movie has English subtitles..

Wow, wow ... and wow again. It was well worth the almost 40 min walk from my hotel. The amazing Roman artefacts of the area are beautifully exhibited ...and not in a boring manner.
