Beautiful historical building in a convenient location. The lobby and public areas are exquisite. Our room (in the new section) however did not reflect the same quality. It was austere and I certainly did not expect a bathroom without a shower. A guest is only able to take one while sitting inside a very small bathtub with a hose. Our friends who also stayed there liked their room. My advise is to know ahead the amenities in the room you select, and I believe the old section is supposed to be better.

This is not a 4 star hotel. The building is amazing and the staff at the reception were eager to help and nice. But that is it. Everything else awful. We stayed there the night of the 6th of August 2022. The elevator did not work. The wifi did not work. The guests were leaving the restaurant angry because if you do not speak french the service is terrible. The room was not clean. There was dust all over and in the bathroom there was a remote control covered in hair and dirt. It would be acceptable... if you do not expect a 4 star hotel.

Same comments as most others - stay in the old section. I can only describe the new section as akin to a prison for short people as my husband was unable to stand up straight next to the bed. Very depressing and extremely claustrophobic. Which is a shame when the historic section of the building is so beautiful. Stars for the pool on the rooftop, the location which makes the entire city and train station incredibly accessible, and for Heather at the front desk who was an absolute star. I would also like to request the hotel management invest in new pillows - I, for one, prefer not to sleep on a bag of cotton balls!

Average at best. Staff were grumpy and unhelpful. Particularly the restaurant manager who would have been better employed in a job where he would not have to be bothered by the public. The receptionist was half way through checking us in when she answered the phone and came back to us five minutes later. Not very impressed. The room was quite pleasant but you’ll need mosquito repellant.

We were denied a room because we have a child! They would not allow us to take a room because they are not “allowed” never in my life have I been denied a room because of having a child. They didn’t have any other rooms available that would be able to accommodate a child either. We said that he was only 5 and could sleep in our bed. But this didn’t matter. The worst part is that the reservation said it was ok to have 2 adults + 1 child. Super unjust and so inconvenient for us to find another hotel at 9pm.

BEWARE OF THE SUPERIOR ROOMS! The photos do not represent what you get! I booked a one-night stay at Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis, a "four star" hotel, in a "superior" room costing 217 euros. We did not know that "superior" means a room in "the modern annex," which is dingy, outdated, dark, and smells like sewer. Upon entering, we found a pitch-black, closet-like hallway with doors on all sides and a fire door to the room. The bathroom entryway was small with low ceilings, and the room itself had old, stained carpet and very outdated furniture. The sewer smell permeated the entire room. We asked the front desk for another room, and they were very understanding and helpful, but there were only rooms available in the modern annex, and none in the older, charming part of the hotel. Thankfully, they granted our request for a full refund. Kudos to the staff for doing the right thing - this is a total scam and a ripoff, and the rooms in the modern annex should be marketed as "budget" rooms for far less money (with a 1-star designation). After getting a full refund, we found an adorable, upscale boutique 4-star hotel just a block away, for 160 euros per night (over 50 euros LESS!) in a junior suite that was clean, well-lit, smelled wonderful, and the design was a real treat. Hotel de Cambis saved the day! DO NOT SETTLE for the modern annex in Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis. There are better, cheaper rooms very close by.

    * Location is great, courtyard lovely but : * Rooms were most probably “modern”maybe 15 years ago…. We could feel the dust when entering on the room… I would not dare to turn on the AC or heating when is it last time you maintenance ? Look at all the DUST on the pictures ! It’s everywhere. * the QR code to scan for room service always shows “room service is closed” and the fridge empty… * no electric plugs next to the beds * pillow not the best for a 4* * not enough light in the room to read a book, it’s all low energy light bulbs everywhere * there is a heavy door that close automatically between entry hall of the bedroom and the bathroom. A kid would break is arm if the door would close itself

I stayed here a few years ago and came back in 2022. It's very nice but they have not done enough to take advantage of the potential of the huge courtyard and other elements. Breakfast is good, but a 3 compared to what other hotels do. The downstairs bar is small and seldom staffed. But hotel parking is very convenient and the staff are excellent and very helpful and the location is very quiet. Rooms are quite nice and also very quiet. Interesting history for sure.

Great location, and incredible to have a swimming pool in the center of Avignon! The reception staff is absolutely adorable and went above and beyond to help us and make our stay enjoyable. The building itself is magical, but the decoration lacks charm, and some of the amenities are not up to the price point: the rooms, while being spacious and comfortable, are dark and with a very bad toilet smell and quite old furniture and bathroom, the service is a bit light, the pool area offers a great view but lacks comfort (no umbrellas, pool quite dirty, no bar service). Breakfast is good and with a very reasonable price, taken in a quiet and fresh garden.

The receptionist completely ignored me and did not seem to realize that she was employed in the tourist business. She had an air of indifference and arrogance about her which indicates that she had not been properly trained by her superiors. Also, when you book via Booking be aware that you will be given the worst rooms all the way up under the roof. Apart from the position I have nothing good to say about this hotel. Also, getting out of the parking lot was a joke: impossible to find where to press and nothing had been done to help the customers. I wish I had stayed somewhere else. The price of the room was charged to my credit card the moment I made the reservation - several weeks before we arrived. But still, the first thing we were asked was to give them a credit card for "extras" and if we broke anything. What kind of signal is that to send to your customers? OK, if you are tired of tourists, then find another business.

Our room was very dark, the window at the end being closed with blinds as there was a brick wall outside. On entering the smell from the bathroom was unpleasant - we reported it to the staff the next morning. Strange that the toilet was off the bedroom and the rest of the bathroom was outside the bedroom door in a lobby to the room. The staff were great and really friendly and helpful. No charging sockets at the side of the bed was strange as there were light switches there. The welcome gift was a bottle of water each, which was quite welcomed. Secure parking was good - I'm always nervous parking on the streets in France with a foreign car. Breakfast was good. Would stay there again but would not book a standard room for fear of getting the same one again!

Double bed made out of 2 singles, and bedding of terrible quality, AC not working, no amenities, bathrobes, sleepers, vanities, everything felt dirty and out of maintenance. This is not a 4 stars Hotel, I wouldn't even give 3 stars. Commented those issues to the director who did nothing about it, only giving some ridiculous explanations. Unacceptable!!! The only positive is the location within the walls of Avignon.

Good location & pleasant staff. The room is spacious but has an awkward layout & an unpleasant odor that seem to come from the drains and toilet. Bathroom has a low ceiling with hot halogen lights. The window looks out to a courtyard with tall beautiful trees but otherwise unmaintained garden. The breakfast buffet is very basic. AC/heater does not work but we had to keep the window open anyway in order to get the odor dissipated.

The rooms in the modern part of the building do not warrant the 250 euro per night price... Members of out group had many issues with their rooms too. Breakfast service was at times shambolic - coffee machines constantly breaking and the repleneshement of cups, glasses and food was slow. Friends had stayed before and we had high expecations - Birthday dinner was booked in the hotel and we ended up with people finishing mains while others still were waitting for theirs....

Great location from which to explore Avignon. Very interesting building and conversion. Very pleasant staff good food and good value for money. Very comfortable bed and room spoilt by bathroom being a bit cranky ..... very small bath and shower head at other end from taps requiring a very long shower hose presenting a trip hazard

Very bad hotel. We rented a room here for 2 days. I cost over 300 Euro per night and was a really poor standard. The front desk unfriendly, we did complaint about high music from the bar every morning at 07.00. They were told already the first morning and did not do anything about it. The next day we asked them to come to our room to see why we complaint. They did not do something about it.....

Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms were clean and a good size: cool, too, considering it was 32-34 degrees outside. The fridge could have been cooler and the lift wasn't working for a few days. But the location, the beautiful court yard and the pool make this a hotel I would definitely book again.

This was the worst hotel experience of my life. The hotel allowed my luggage, including my passport and personal items, to be stolen out of pure carelessness. I was on a cycling trip where my luggage was being shipped from hotel to hotel why I cycled between cities. When I arrived at this hotel, my luggage was not there. When the driver dropped off my luggage in the hotel, the hotel did not lock it up but left it sitting alone in the lobby for hours where it was stolen before I arrived. Apparently the hotel has random people wander inside looking for things to steal. The hotel employees showed no sympathy for the fact I was alone in a foreign country with no passport because of their negligence. The employees even joked with each other when I asked them to print paperwork so I could get a new passport. Never in my years of traveling have I had such a terrible experience, nor have been surrounded by people who cared less for the well-being of others. This hotel is not safe. Please choose any other hotel.

Building is beautiful, location is great but all down hill. Room was very noise, no sound insulation on stairs in room which meant all noise from swimming pool coming and going, lift movement, and staircase below very loud. Zero water pressure for hot water. Not told about staircase in room before going to room and had heavy luggage. No assistance provided. Asked to move room as was staying 4 nights. Told only 114 was available although previous staff member told me in passing that they were at half capacity. 114 is up an extremely steep double stair case which was not possible with heavy luggage. Told we would need to vacate the room at 10am if we wanted a different room but the room would not be available until 4pm!! Overall very poor customer service and will not be returning on my next visit. Build is beautiful so very sad and such a let down.

The courtyard of this hotel is one of the most beautiful places in the world. That alone deserves 5 stars. You can nitpick about this and that, and yes, the architect of the new section of the hotel should be arrested, but all the rooms of the hotel are perfectly decent by Avignon standards, the staff are super competent and friendly and the courtyard is a dream.

The building is very attractive but the new bedrooms are not new! They are very tired with the rooms being very dark! Bathroom is small and very tired. We moved room due to cigarette smell and a buzz from air con! The second room equally as tired but not as smelly but there were other problems. Our receptionist was helpful and apologised for inconvenience.

  • 1/5 Lucy T. 7 months ago on Google
The room is old and tired. The bed is uncomfortable. The pillows are very old and lumpy. The aircon isn’t cool enough. The bathroom smells like a cross between a hospital and sewage. There are not plugs both sides of the bed. There is no way to darken the room as the shutters don’t shut. We can hear people eating outside. It feels icky. Bad vibes. Can’t wait to leave in the morning.

Not sure why all the complaints. This is a very quaint hotel built in a refurbished monastry. Of course the design has to accommodate the structure of the old building. Its very charming and the rooms are huge with modern facilities inside. The rooms overlook the center garden of the monastry. Location is tops. Walking distance to main sights. Onsite parking available and spacious, unlike some garage where parking is a heart-stopping matter. I highly recommend this place.

The hotel has a very good site and location. We stayed at the new building and, surprisingly, the room had no so electric sockets to charge laptops and cells. It is new and bad design. Whatever floor you stay, the access to the room goes through a 10 step stairs. The reception people however are marvelous.

There was no bar to get a soft drink from even though temperatures in Avignon were in the low forties. If you wanted a Coke or a bottle of water you had to go to the back door of the kitchen and ask the staff there. On two occasions we tried to have dinner at the hotel but even though we were residents were told the dining room was full. The toilet in our room flushed most of the time so the cistern often did not fill. A repair man came twice to fix it but it still did not work. There was no milk to make tea or coffee with in the room. We had to go to the back door of the kitchen and ask the staff for a cup of milk.

Do NOT come here if you are a weary sojourner hoping to eat after travelling. This place was the prison of the Jesuits, true to its history, as you could not eat or drink, (Because it was booked by people who are not not staying at the hotel), it really veritably still is a prison. The management was extremely unhelpful, rude, and indignant. Horrible -unless you’re looking for a cold bed in a cold hotel room in a nice architectural structure. The last point is a positive, But you would really be better off in a hostel or a second rate hotel. Disgusting ambiance, petrifying personal (except a very nice Emma trying to fight the system). Please only come for a cheap drink and don’t Suffer the damnation of spending the eternal horrification of a full night here.

Stayed in the new wing. No character and had two doors(one very heavy and squeaky) to get from the bedroom to the toilet. Very odd layout. Worse was a strong sewage smell in our bedroom. Staff overwhelmed and said 3 times they would send someone to take a look (or smell) but they never came. Slept with our patio door open all night and sheets over our faces. Apparently, it's a problem city-wide but we never smelled it anywhere else in the hotel or city. Breakfast overly crowded and grossly understaffed. Great location and beautiful old building but ....not sure it's worth it. it.

The room lighting system was awkward to use. Also the lighting was so poor that you could only read if you were on the bed. The room had a total of 4 doors. Very awkward set up. Beautiful, peaceful setting. Wish the bar was open to serve coffee or wine in the afternoon. It never opened even in the evening. Breakfast was excellent. Exceeded our expectations. Pool wasn't cleaned of leaves, so we didn't use it even though the weather was hot.

Hi -- I've written on Orbitz/Expedia and have also emailed with a question in regards to an upcoming reservation. Would someone please get back to me? A bit shocked this is a 4-star hotel when you can't even respond to future guests.

Very nice and authentic hotel in the heart of Avignon. You can almost feel the history, while walking down the aisles of the hotel

  • 4/5 Liam J. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful space with a lovely courtyard and nice rooms. Only downside is the short ceilings in entry ways and bathrooms. As a 6’5” / 196cm individual this was quite problematic and made showering difficult, but won’t affect most people.

The hotel perks and common spaces are rather amazing! the scenery of this old monastery is inspiring. having breakfast outside is a great experience in the quietness of the space, and the swimming pool is a must!. Although the rooms are unfortunately getting quite old and clearly need refurbishing (at least in the old building). our bed was unbearably old, deformed and soft, the air conditioning was not functioning at all and the room wasn't very clean.

Extremely disappointing in all senses. Such a shame as the main building is beautiful but it has been really spoilt by the nasty modern annexe which really resembles a prison block. Rooms that are not in the main building are depressing. Absolutely not upscale as advised. Awful design with tiny bathrooms and narrow access made worse by heavy fire doors that slam shut. Our room 206 allocated had an strong smell of drains. We were moved to 106 where the heating wasnt working so it was freezing. This was reported on our arrival night but no notice was taken and nothing had been done by the time we returned from a business meeting the following afternoon. Technicians did come quickly when a further complaint was made but they were unable to repair. So we were moved yet a third time. I asked for help moving the bags (as my husband is awaiting shoulder surgery) and was told someone would come in 5 to 10 minutes. Noone ever came so I did it myself after sitting in the freezing room for half an hour. There seem to be very few staff. Those that are there are pleasant but one member of the staff on reception had a very unfortunate and abrasive manner. Apart from being moved for the 2nd time by a helpful young man on reception that afternoon, I cant say there was any serious acknowledgement or apology for all the issues we encountered. I cannot recommend this place other than for its location and parking.

The Superior rooms are very disappointing. These seem to be in the new annex. They are poorly designed, showing their age and uncomfortable. No hot water in the sinks. Only cooling in the summer and heating in the winter and no options for changeable weather in Fall and Spring. I’m guessing based on other happy reviews that the rooms in the older parts of the building have charm that make up for the other issues. Highly recommend AGAINST the rooms in the newer (although probably 30 year old) annex.

Exterior of the hotel is lovely, the first look on the inside courtyard really makes you smile, but it only goes downhill from there. Service varies, some people at the front desk are uneducated about their jobs, others are ok. The design is terrible, all the furniture feels and is old, both in the common area and in the rooms (at least the modern side, but pictures on the website show the same in the old part), this includes old leather chairs that might have been modern 20y ago, or a piece of carpet on the wall, with some hairs on it... The layout of the room is very strange, feels like a bunker with no real window but a kind of claustra. Overall super disappointed because it could really be an amazing hotel if they hired an interior architect. And finally, definitely not worth the price per night !

  • 3/5 Meghan M. 2 years ago on Google
I think we would’ve enjoyed our stay more if we did not stay on the “modern” side as advertised on their website. The room had stained carpet and what looked like spilled coffee streaks on the wall. The bathroom and shower were in a hallway attached to the room and had a very strong musty/moldy smell. With that being said, the rooms on the other side looked much nicer and cleaner with terracotta floors instead of carpet. The lobby, rooftop and courtyard is beautiful and you can’t beat the location.

Pleasant and helpful staff. Great breakfast. Bedrooms vary widely, have tiny toilet rooms that were difficult for me to negotiate. Rooms in "new" part of hotel have catwalk approach, louvered shutters covering balcony. Room initially assigned to me was on the top floor, had no windows, only a skylight covered by a shade, and open shower area. Cloister view from main hallway is lovely.
