Our accommodation was a few km away from this port. We almost left the area and not visit it, until one day when we passed by it and decided to take a closer look. The entrance fee was very reasonable, and like most tourist attractions in France, the entrance is free for children (0-18 yrs). The tour was short (45min). We loved the view and the art exhibition. We found out interesting things about the rivalry between two important political powers holders. It is worth your time. If you come by car, there is parking close by. As you leave the fort, you’ll be able to take a nice stroll into the small town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. It is a very nice little town, with coffee shops, narrow streets and nicely dressed people:)

(Translated by Google) Fortified enclosure, flanked by watchtowers and a monumental gate framed by two twin towers, the fort looks down from the top of the hill on which it was built over the Rhône and on the other bank the Palais des Papes and the city of 'Avignon. Closing of the ticket office 45 minutes before the monument closes. The annual pass at 17 € allows visitors to discover this monument as well as the Chartreuse, the Saint-André Abbey, the Philippe le Bel tower and the Pierre de Luxembourg Museum. On sale in every place. Clôture de la billeterie 45 mn avant la fermeture du monument. We walked all the way from Avignon to visit this place and it was totally worth it. It is located on a hill and you can see from the distance. The entrance is 8 euro and you can visit the interior gardens which are very beautiful in a provençal way, with the cigales singing loudly in a very old olive garden. There is a pretty little chapel where we hid from the sun for a minute, then we continued with the terraces where you have a panoramic view over Avignon and the mountains. Not many tourists around, which makes it even better 💚 at the ticket shop they sell a lovely selection of wines

Very cool place. I suggest you to walk from the Palais des Papes and visit Tour Phillipe-le-Bel, and then make your way to For Saint-André. It will make a for very educational and active day! Fort Saint-André was worth the ticket. I visited in December so the abbey was closed. I learned a lot about the history of this region and how castles like these function/serve their purpose. The fort also offers fantastic views all around! Catch the bus line number 5 from Tour Philipe-le-Bel to take you back to the city center.

I can recommend this fortress. Definitely worth visiting. View is amazing, especially on the Palace of the Pope. The tour inside the castle takes approximately 1 hour. We did it with a baby (7 months) in a baby-carrier. The Abbey and garden are beautiful. You can drive up to the castle and park the car near (2 min walk).

(Translated by Google) An unmissable place marking first by its exterior architectural power, its interior structures, but a lot by its extraordinarily planted and organized park of plantations both framed, others a little in the French style, others in the English style but all in this place so impressive and dominating with alleys full of discoveries of viewpoints, surprising places, and an interior circuit of free visit to the roots of the Christian culture implanted in Avignon powerfully by the Popes and great religious and military orders. At the top of Villeneuve les Avignon, getting there is easy, the reception at the interior entrances is very courteous. It is a magnificent place, in the Latin sense large, powerful, beautiful... unavoidable. The walk up to the fortress is very relaxing. The fortress itself is in perfect state and truly awesome. Just a pity we got there when it was closed for visits but on the other hand, we had a great night view.

Impressive building, nice panorama, but inside there's not that much that could keep you on site. I was expecting something more in line with the Pope's palace considering the two buildings had a primary role for several years during the late middle age.

We visited in May 2018. Cost of entering Fort St. Andre was 6 euros. The garden (separate) was 7 euros which we did not visit. Very glad we visited this site. Apparently, it was built to assert power of the Holy Roman Empire and to make the empire's presence known to the Avignon papacy (i.e., to keep an eye on the competing religious authority). Beautiful view of Avignon itself and the Pont d'Avignon. Ramparts the surround the fort are especially impressive. Worth the trip. You can walk there in 45ish minutes from Avignon which includes a walk through the lovely village below.

It is good to know that in order to visit also the abbey you must pay an additional entrance fee, as it is not included in the ticket to visit the Fort. The fort is a fortified enclosure established on Mount Andaon. The fortification was carried out under Jean II le Bon. The fort and the perimeter wall surrounding the abbey were built in several stages during the second half of the 14th century. From the ramparts you have a beautiful view.

Only 6€ and a fabulous opportunity to wander through the towers and over the ramparts. Lots of arrowloop photo opportunities and murder holes to stare down. Brilliant views from the ramparts and towers. A great alternative to more crowded venues in Avignon.

An impressive medieval fort with great views of Villeneuve and Avignon. The tour route is well organized, and detailed pamphlets are available in English. I visited in low season and had the entire fort to myself.

The breakfast was amazing, and they were very tentative to our needs and kept it filled until the very last minute even past the time!. Then they put the extra croissants out for us to have later on!. Very clean but we a had a super small room.

I caught bus 5 near the train station. Just inside the city wall on left. The Fort is well worth the visit and the view is spectacular. Even walking up the hill from the bus stop and seeing the ramparts is impressive.

Stunning. Suggestion would be to park in town away from Fort Saint-André so you can enjoy the village on the way up and back down.

We had a fantastic experience. The people working there are super friendly and the surroundings and view are beautiful. It was lovely to read about the history, which was written in both English and French. We, students, aged 19 and 20 could go in for free 💗 Thank you!

Stunning views of the surrounding countryside across to the Palais des Papes in Avignon. The fort is situated in Villeneuve Lez Avignon. It's an ancient fort built in the 14th century. The history is very interesting and it's well worth visiting.

Well preserved fort with spectacular views of Avignon and the surrounding villages. We were surprised on how quiet it was in comparison with the Palais de Papes. The entrance fee is only 6€ for the fort, which is unbelievable value when you consider the views and the history lesson that it offers. If you have the whole day in the area you can buy a combo ticket for 20€ to see all the attractions in Villeneuve, including the church and the tower of Philippe Le Bel. The village itself is really charming, so it is highly recommended!

(Translated by Google) Disappointed we expected something else. The abbey is inhabited by its owner and can only be visited on the days registered at the castle ticket office. 6 euros entry to see a bunch of poorly maintained ruins. A tower with some explanations... Average. Your turn to judge.. (Original) Déçu on s'attendait a autre chose. L'abbaye est habité par son propriétaire et se visite uniquement les jours inscrit a la billetterie du château. 6 euros l'entrée pour voir un tas de ruines mal entretenu. Amazing view of Avignon and surroundings, inside there's an old chapel with very old (almost faded) murals. Last entrance is one hour before closing.

If you’re thinking of visiting Avignon make time also to walk across the bridge over the Rhone to historic Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Fort Saint-Andre which can be seen clearly up on the hill. I did so in August this year and was glad to have seen the 14th century fortress and spectacular views from the top. Expect a moderate climb. A ticket into the fort cost around 6 euros. Well worth it.

👍 The king of France Philippe le Bel ordered in 1292 the construction of a fortress around the city and the abbey of Saint-André. 😠 Garden not in good shape at all when we visited. Not a great variety of plants, lack of colour and dried up weeds degrade the visual.
