(Translated by Google) Between 1327 and 1333, Arnaud de Via regroups several lands located to the south of his residence to build the chapel of his palace. The chapel was consecrated on June 1, 1333, by his uncle, Pope John XXII. The creation of the entrance porch, to the east, was authorized by the king on April 1, 1334. A year later the cardinal died and was buried in his chapel. Arnaud de Via had founded a chapter of canons who inherited his property. From 1336, the canons built the cloister between the church and the main building of the palace. Then they change the orientation of the church by opening a new door to the south. They build a second bell tower and close the arches of the old entrance porch of their church, in the process, they build a sacristy, adjoining the north of the bell tower. In 1540, creation of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in the cloister. The architect Jean-Baptiste Franque intervened between 1746 and 1749, in particular to create the choir of the canons with an oval plan and a flat and inlaid vault. During the revolution, the property was confiscated: the main building of the palace and the land behind it were sold, the chapel became the parish church of Villeneuve.

👍 The king of France Philippe le Bel ordered in 1292 the construction of a fortress around the city and the abbey of Saint-André. The tower was attached to the Pont Saint-Bénézet (aka Pont d'Avignon) which was then abandoned in 1669 and the fortress ceased to have a useful function. After the French R...

😠 Garden not in good shape at all when we visited. Not a great variety of plants, lack of colour and dried up weeds degrade the visual.
