Colorado in Provence as they’re commonly known is indeed a colourful treat to our eyes. The combination of several coloured soil types in one little place accessible by hiking is an interesting experience in itself. Located in the cute town of Roussillon, they’re one of the tourist attractions in the region of Luberon. The town is pretty cute as well. All houses are coloured with the same local pigments. One can reach there by car easily. Roughly an hour drive from Aix en Provence using highway A7. Dedicated parking is available for cars and camping vehicles. Be aware that reservation required in the month of July and August to visit this place. There are little lavender fields in the town at a walking distance. Dont Forget to buy colour pigments if you love to paint. There are many vineyards in this region to explore. Note: the place becomes really hot in summers so be prepared for such weather and carry a lot fluids and fruits for hiking trail. Hiking trails are well marked (yellow or red).

A short loop walk perfect for all people of abilities and ages! 3€ entrance fee and free for children 10 and under. The bright red landscape is magnificent! We went in December and it had snowed the night before, so the sight was even more amazing! If going in the cooler more wintery months I would recommend wearing snow boots and bring a warm jacket too! After the walk we strolled into Roussillon (literally a 2 min walk) and had a look around the beautiful town. Parking was free when we went, and located right at the entrance of the walk. There are toilets at the carpark which were well looked after and free of charge.

The ocherfields are a nice place to visit if you're in the neighborhood. It is an old mining site where they would mine ocher colored rock. The fields stretch quite far and make for some beautiful landscapes. The nearby town is also worth a visit, as it is very colorful, with all building being made out of or being colored with the stone from the fields. Do keep in mind that the walking routes through the fields are relatively short. These fields are also a big tourist spot, so you'll want to keep that in mind when visiting. If you visit early in the day and outside of the tourist season, you'll probably have a better time enjoying the ocher fields.

It was wonderful to travel to this place surrounded by nature like this. The color palette of red was everywhere in this valley, every view had something to give you like a framed painting. The walk itself is not too difficult, but if necessary, it can be divided into a longer (50min) and a shorter (30min) tour. We didn't wait long to enter, there is a nearby car park which allows you to park your car for the whole day at a modest price (€4).

Gorgeous!! So fun to walk around in nature for a bit. Wear closed toed running shoes to avoid getting the orange sand all in between your toes. It was hot, but there was shade from the trees. Easy hike, but there is a long staircase that you must take to do it. A few local touristy shops at the top sold fun Provence keepsakes & water bottles. There’s also a potable water fountain at the top. Parking was an outdoor lot just before the hike (there were signs) for €3. After the hike, we walked around the town of Roussillon with more unique shops & narrow, red-walled walkways. Definitely recommend adding this to your itinerary!

Bryce Canyon en Provence. Must do if you're in the South of France. Ignore your GPS, it'll mislead you. Just drive to Roussillon; at the entrance of the village, there's a parking lot, and, from there, the Sentier is a few steps away. Entry and parking are only a few €. There's a lot of lavender fields nearby; most of them are private properties, so use discretion.

After visiting many of the cities in Provence, the village of Rousillon was one of my favorites. I am an artist so my bias if for visual beauty and possible painting ops. This town is full of that. The buildings are colorful and not over manicured like Gordes. There is a great vista of the complete village as you walk toward Le Sentier des Ocres, with a great shaded spot for painting plein air. I thought I had seen everything there was to see of the village of Roussillon until my boyfriend convinced me to tour the rusty colored hills at the top of the village. It costs 3 euro per person to go in and it is near a toilet. Yay! OMG I am so glad I did! We got great photos, probably the best of the trip. If you are into photography, go when there is light. Don't go on a rainy or overcast day. I highly suggest you don't miss this part of Roussillon. It is super unique and special, the reddish colored hills against the green trees is breathtaking, a once in a lifetime site.

Beautiful and inspiring place! There are 2 walks, both easy to do while enjoying the colors of Nature. Love it, it's a must go!

Fantastic ochre rock formations and gorgeous scenery. There is a 30 min or 50 min walk with varying degrees of elevation. If you are a experienced walker or hiker opt for the 50 min walk as the 30 min walk can be done in 15 min.

Being in Roussilion, it is worth going for a 35-minute walk. I do not recommend taking a stoller due to the stairs on the route. I didn't note a place to store stollers, but people left them near the entrance. The route is about 1 km, not demanding.

It was good, a photo around every corner. On the walk down the hill afterwards, we found an excellent ice cream shop on the left before the toilets.

Spectacular place to visit. Best to park just outside the village and do the short walk but parking is available in the centre. Fairly busy places but that's too be expected given the scenery and great little shops. Nice sleeveless of eateries too.

A fun trek good for the whole family and dog friendly. The bathroom was impossible and the parking situation is hectic. It costs 4 euros for the whole day, so you can leave the car there and go to the town for a walk.

An easy trail walk with some nice views of the ochre cliffs, but there are some stairs/inclines. Main viewpoint is at the beginning after the flight of stairs but it’s still worth taking the long route if you’re able. It took us around 30 min to do the loop. I was totally fine wearing comfortable flat sandals but good walking shoes/sneakers are recommended, and be mindful your shoes will get dusty. 3€/person to enter.

You won't be there longer than one hour. Lots of people, small parking, expensive ice cream, yawning service, crowded pathways, lots of nasty colored sand, few spots to look at, and nothing that you never seen. But you will go there anyway, because you won't be visiting Avignon for the next 30 years, therefore your partner will drag you there no matter what. 🙂 Have fun.

Incredibly colorful landscapes worth seeing! Two trail lengths are offered, each lasting about 30 and 50 minutes. The trails are well maintained and no hiking equipment is necessary. Parking was 4€/24h.

This is a beautiful place for a simple excursion. There is two track, one during 30 minutes and one during one hour.

This is a really cool place. If you are near, please do not hesitate to visit. The red rocks and soil give almost mars like vibes. Great place to walk around and take awesome photos. It takes around 1,5h to do the bigger circle. Do the big one as the small is almost all forest.

Such an incredibly beautiful place! This might be my favorite spot in Provence. It’s like nothing else in the world. A magical rainbow of natural colors! I was worried that it might be too crowded, but we arrived around noon on a Friday in early November and had much of the (longer) walk all to ourselves. The path is very interesting and well-maintained. Convenient parking and excellent value.

Its a fun stop and a nice walk around the rocks and learning about the history of ocre. They have two walks and we took the longer one—if you walk at a decent pace you will definitely do it quicker than they say. A nice add on to visiting Roussillon which is definitely worth a stop while wandering the Provence.

Worth the drive. Great colors all around. Go as early as you can. Avoid the heat and the busses. The hike times are much shorter than posted.

Just stunning! As the sun comes up the whole place just comes alive. The long walk is very easy, and definitely worth the little bit of extra effort. A must see if you're in the area.

Did the little walk with the family. Son 3 years old had a blast and kept referring to it as cowboy mountain.

Astonishing views. The trail is simple and you get to see plenty of beautiful nature. Unfortunately, it can be a little bit crowded. Nevertheless, I highly recommend to visit this place!

  • 5/5 Jane N. 1 year ago on Google
The trail is shorter than you think, so don’t be afraid to try it. The red path took us 30 mins from start to finish even with pauses for photos. Beautiful red colours.

Was on a tour so didn't get long but remarkable scenery. Costs about €3 to get into the actual park area. Town is lovely to wander about also.

A must visit place.. you canvisit the ocres and the village in an afternoon. The tracks are very easy to do you. You can visit the sentier in two hours. However prepare yourselfs with water hats and a good pair of shoes. I do not recommend this palce during summer.. it can be very hot and dry during summers

  • 4/5 Kanada G. 1 year ago on Google
The pathway was a bit small even if we took the longest which is 50 minutes but action if you run a bit it's not 50 minutes

pay attention to the opening hours, they received me at 2 pm. and it was closed, many people turned away in disgust, but I was undeterred and they climbed the hill and found another beautiful path unfortunately, most of the trek is outside of this area, but a short distance away nad free

Incredible place, stunning scenery as you walk the old pits where they carved out the Ocre. The nearby village (Roussilon) is beautiful too, much to explore.

We, on a road trip went to Roussillon, in the Colorado part of the Luberon. It's a beautiful part of France. The whole town is in varying shades of ochre, high up on a mountain (like all other villages around here).

  • 5/5 Or M. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful place. The village as well, you can have a 30 min walk and one hour walk it costs 3€ per person there is a group discount i think. Worth the 3€ very nice and different topography

  • 5/5 Jan B. 8 months ago on Google
We love the sand of many different colors. Astonishing view, also back to Roussillon. Good descriptions. Nice loop to go around the site, also for children. Trees spend needed shadow during summertime.

  • 4/5 Marcel M. 9 months ago on Google
There are two walks; the longest will probably take 30-40 minutes, I wouldn’t take the shortest one. Expect a few stairs, nothing strenuous though. The soil is sandy and its colour will stay on your shoes a while. We visited the place in June in the second half of the day and that was perfect.

👍👍 We had an excellent tasting experience here. Very friendly owner who spoke great English and explained his wines at great length to us. Lovely facility tasting in a cave/cellar converted from horse stables. One of the barrel rooms also contains a small art gallery.
