The brotherhoods of Penitents, an association of lay people united for a charitable purpose, experienced significant growth in the South and particularly in Avignon which numbered up to seven. That of the Gray Penitents, founded in 1226 by King Louis VIII, is still active. The Black Penitents of Mercy were born in 1586 from a dismemberment of the brotherhood of Florentine Black Penitents established in 1488: twelve brothers headed by Pompey Catilina, colonel of the Pontifical Infantry, created a new placed company, like the one whose they come from, under the name of Saint John the Baptist.

A splendid chapel, for which the city of Avignon must undertake maintenance and renovation work without delay, in order to highlight the magnificent paintings and the cabinet work carried out on the walls and ceiling!

Beautiful chapel a hundred meters from the Palace, almost hidden in a discreet place with little traffic. Two rooms, one quite small and the other majestic with sumptuous paintings and beautiful golden lighting, worth seeing if you are on the road.

A place to discover: behind the beautiful baroque facade hides a 17th century chapel with decorations still in good condition thanks to the passion of the association of black penitents, the owner of the building. Beautiful paintings by Mignard father and son. Mass every Sunday morning according to the Tridentine rite.
