It was built between 10 B.C. and 4 A.D., during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus. It was dedicated to his grandchildren. The Maison Carrée has inspired the design of several neoclassical buildings, such as the Madeleine church in Paris and the Virginia State Capitol (its architect was Thomas Jefferson). Despite its rectangular shape, this temple was called Maison Carrée which in English is "Square House". This name was given to it in the XVI century, since in the French language of that time, any geometric figure with four right angles was designated with the word "carré". With the payment of an entrance fee you can enter and watch a documentary (20 min) which explains the history of Nîmes and the construction of the Maison Carrée.

Beautiful example of ancient architecture. If you like history you’d be definitely inspired. However I don’t think that it is worth to buy a ticket to get in (6€ per person). There’s a big empty room with some information about the building… so you can read it on the Internet.

Very beautiful art, especially outside well maintained, fine detail but nothing to see inside except the showcase to read for the history part.

The 'Maison Carée' is considered one of the best preserved Roman temples in the world. Originally a temple dedicated to the grandchildren of emperor Augustus, the building has also been a church, a warehouse, a private residence, and a museum. Today, you can watch a 23-min movie about the history of Nimes. Starts every half hour on the hour. Cost €6.

The temple is well preserved and shows its importance even today in the center of the square. I didn't really like how it was set up inside as it doesn't value it well how could in addition to the cost which is slightly high.

Despite reviews from some others complaining this beautiful and historical building is empty inside we chose to have a look inside. And were we happy that we did! True, it’s empty in the sense of historical or even original artifacts but come one this place is 2000 years old! Instead the caretakers/owners have done their best to walk visitors through the origins of this unique temple including how it looked like when the Romans built it. Very informative and somewhat interactive. Fascinating place and let’s be honest, how often do you get the chance to walk inside a 2000 years old Roman temple still so intact?!

This roman temple in the, by emperor Augustus founded, city of Nimes is a true treasure. Where other roman buildings where often used as stone quarry or got striped of their ornaments in order to decorate new buildings, the Maison Carrée has been preserved in it's original state for more that 2000 years. It has been used for many different functions during it's history namely a city hall, a church, a prefecture, a museum, a house and even a tomb for the son of the duchess of Uzès. The more recent restauration of 2011 let it shine brightly white.

Its stunning Corinthian columns and intricate detailing are a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply appreciate beauty in architecture, Maison Carrée is a must-visit. The Maison Carrée is a beautiful and historic Roman temple situated in the heart of Nîmes. For any intrepid traveller interested in Roman history, this building is a definite location to visit when visiting Nîmes. When perusing around the temple there is good information given to you about the history of the building over the past 2000 years. You can buy a combination ticket that includes access to this building as well as the Amphitheater of Nîmes and the Tour Magne. It is a recommended purchase if you are interested in site seeing Nîmes.

A famous Roman monument in Nîmes is the Maison Carrée, a well-preserved Roman temple that dates back to the first century AD. The temple was dedicated to Emperor Augustus's sons and is considered one of France's best examples of Roman architecture. Today, the Maison Carrée houses a museum that tells the story of the temple and its history.

A perfectly preserved Roman temple is a must-see if you are interested in Roman culture. Take care to read the information displayed on the northern side. It is worth to step down the stairs to experience how impressive the temple was from the original street level. Absolutely worth visiting.

Antiker Tempel Innen einige Plakate mit der Geschichte des Tempels Aus meiner Sicht nichts besonderes und für den Eintritt zu teuer

The most preserved Roman Temple you can find in Europe or Asia. It is impressive to see it in almost original slform.

Just admire it from outside is enough. 6 € ticket for a small exhibition inside is too much.

Quite an impressive Roman temple, incredibly well preserved and restored back practically to perfection. Mind, though, that the inside is rather dull, as the walls are bare and white washed and all the information you can find in there is readily available in the internet; so, if you are in a tight budget, do not pay the fee in, it is just a square house

We didn’t realize how tiny this place is inside. It’s one little room with a bunch of little exhibits. It was interesting to read the history of the maison but it was super hot and stuffy inside.

Beautiful place and it’s exterior preservation is amazing. Learning about some of the history inside is fantastic, recommend if you’re doing a few tourist attractions get the group ticket for the arena, here and the tower.

Impressive, huge and well preserved temple. Worth checking it out. I wouldn’t pay to visiting it only though, as there’s not much inside (apart from panels explaining the history, the inside is virtually bare). It’s part of the Pass Romanité though, so I recommend getting that one if planning a visit.

A touch of ancient Rome in 21st century. A lot of corithian temple pillars. You can buy one ticket for temple and amphitheatre

Honestly not worth going inside. From the open door you can see inside, which is just an empty square room with some information boards. It is an absolute marvel to see from the outside, amazing that it has been standing there for two millennia.

Beautifully maintained Roman temple. The area is very clean and opened which helps to go around the temple and enjoy the architecture.

Like others have mentioned, not a ton to see inside but it’s well maintained. We went because it was included in the Nimes la Romaine pass, otherwise I think viewing it from the outside would be sufficient.

Beautiful , well preserved temple. The history is presented and explained in depth inside. We bought the combined ticket with the Arena. 100% worth the visit and a must do in Nîmes.
