🔘The Pyramid of the Niches🔘 ⚫Located in El Tajín a pre-Columbian archeological site in southern Mexico. ⚫This pyramid has as a number of names, including El Tajín, Pyramid of Papantla, Pyramid of the Seven Stories and the Temple of the Niches. ⚫Archaeologists speculate that the temple was built sometime between 1100 and 1150 CE when El Tajin was at the height of its power. ⚫It once contained exactly 365 niches, marking its connection to the solar year. ⚫The Pyramid of the Niches has a square base, 36 meters (118 feet) on each side. ⚫It features six stories (originally seven, but it was destroyed over the centuries), each of which is 3 meters (10 feet) high. ⚫The total height of the Pyramid of the Niches in its present state is 18 meters (about 60 feet). ⚫El Tajín flourished from 600 to 1200 CE and during this time numerous temples, palaces, ballcourts, and pyramids were built, although it is unclear who built the city. ⚫It was discovered in 1785. ⛈️El Tajín means Thunder, named after the Totonac rain god. ⚫It was listed as a World Heritage site in 1992 and Its best-known monument is the Pyramid of the Niches. 🔘El Tajin Building 5🔘 ⚫El Tajín is an archeological site in southern Mexico and is one of the largest and most important cities of the Classic era of Mesoamerica , it flourished from 600 to 1200 CE. ⚫Building 5 is located next to the Pyramid of the Niches. ⚫The pyramid is rising from a platform that is over 32,000 square feet (3,000 m2) in size. ⚫The first level of the pyramid is lined with niches, access to the top of the pyramid is via a double staircase on the east side , the top of the pyramid contains two platforms. ⚫Between the two sets of staircases on the first level on the east side there was a tall column-line sculpture that had been thrown down from the top of the pyramid in ancient times and broken. ⚫The small buildings that surround this pyramid are meant to complement it. 🔘The Arroyo Group🔘 ⚫Located in El Tajín city , it is a pre-Columbian archeological site in southern Mexico and is one of the largest and most important cities of the Classic era of Mesoamerica. ⚫El Tajín flourished from 600 to 1200 CE and during this time numerous temples, palaces, ballcourts, and pyramids were built. ⚫Today we're going to talk about the Arroyo group , it was called like that because two streams surround it on three sides. ⚫This area is one of the oldest sections of the city, and is more than 86,100 square feet (8,000 m2). ⚫It is flanked by four high buildings, named Buildings 16, 18, 19 and 20, which were topped by temples. Stairways lead from the plaza floor to the temples above. ⚫Unlike the rest of the city, these four buildings are uniform in height and nearly symmetrical. ⚫It has been determined that this was the city marketplace because of the large plaza space for stalls and for a deity found here that is related to commerce. ⚫El Tajín was named a World Heritage site in 1992

Lovely site. Easy to access from Papantla and worth a visit. Not much information available on site though, so best to do your research ahead of time if you don't be doing a guided visit. Staying for the Voladores is an absolute must. Currently 50 pesos per person. And a beautiful sight.

Great place to visit with family and friends. You can find several archeology things as gifts.

Amazing site to see pyramids. The style that the "Totonacs used is completely different than anything else in Mexico. Absolutely beautiful. In the jungle, not too many people around. It is 20 pesos to park, but you do have to go through a muddy road to get to the parking, and then 90 pesos a person to enter. You also have the flying hanging dancers, but I will warn you, they charge 50 pesos to watch a 5 minute show. But it was pretty cool to watch and record on my phone.

Visited in 2004, not sure what has changed since then. When we went, we were essentially free to wander as we pleased. No guides, no gift shop, no roped off areas. Was on a trip from Tlaxcala to Veracruz with my parents and we stopped, as they knew it was a very interesting site. The Pyramid of the Niches is such an odd duck, haven't seen anything else quite like it in all the other sites I have seen. Most pre-Columbian sites have the standard pyramids, plazas, ball courts, temples and homes. But each seems to have it's own special building. Like the oval pyramid in Uxmal or the Observatory in Chichen Itza. El Tajin has the Pirámide de los Nichos. Such a strange sense of history you get wandering around these places. Who were they, what were they like, why did they build what they did and where they did? All we can do is make guesses... And all we see are the macro elements of their lives. No clothes or food or wooden items. Just the bare bones of their constructions, with only our imaginations left to fill in the blanks.

We had a great visit. The ingenuity and hard work needed to build this place is definitely noteworthy. Unfortunately, the museum was closed, and the tour guides, though friendly and knowledgeable, catered to large groups with talk about culture, not archeology or history. I would've enjoyed learning more about the language, history, and geoglogy of the site. The market here was the best place we saw for buying from local artisans. There is a small alcove in Papantla (closest town) for similar items, directly across from the main plaza, but it's more expensive and has less variety.

Stopped here on the way home from el rubí. What an amazing place. So sad that there's no real signs or anything that really shows it's there. We got there right when they where doing the ceremonial flying dance to the sun God for rain. What an incredible sight. Then to go see the pyramids and all the other structures inside was great. Total cost for my wife, me and kid was 8.50$ for pyramids and 5$ for the ceremonial dance.

Beautiful archaeological site near Papantla town. The site is open practically everyday, the small museum inside it, is closed on Mondays. People cannot climb the pyramid stairs anymore, as they began to damage. From Monday to Saturday they charge around $4USD (year 2019). On Sundays it is free, but is packed!! So try to arrive as early as possible because it is very hot and sunny as well. It is highly recommended!!

A large pre-hispanic site located in a very remote location of Mexico. It can only be reached by car and the final approach is an ill maintained one lane road. Price of admission is 85 pesos. there is a parking located in a field of grass several hundred yards from the entrance, and before one makes it to the site you've got to negotiate a bazaar full of vendors of all kinds. They are not too overbearing though, which is nice. The site itself is reached through a visitor center building that houses a gift shop, a restaurant and bathrooms. El Tajin is a fairly large site with a number of structures that have been excavated and reconstructed, however, most of its buildings are still unexcavated. You may not climb or so much as touch the monuments and large sections of the city are roped off despite being reconstructed. There is not a whole lot of shade so put your sunscreen on and bring plenty of fluids, and a hat.

A very fascinating and unique ancient city. I would highly suggest those visiting to read up on its history so you can appreciate what makes these particular ruins unique. I hope they can secure some funding in the future to uncover more of the buildings.

Amazing ancient well-preserved Totonac city with unusual pyramids that have niches and carvings. Within its tropical setting of green grass and trees, I could actually feel what it must have been like to be there when it was a thriving city. Highly recommend visiting!

Beautiful pyramids and ball courts hidden in the jungle. One of the often overlooked gems of Mexico. The pyramid of the niches is one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in the world. Well worth the effort to get here. Approximately half an hour from Poza Rica, Veracruz.

Really cool. I visited the day after I visited Teotihuacan. While the pyramids here are not as big, the are much more ornate. Much of the walkway is in poor shape, so make sure you wear good shoes.

Ver Voloradores de Papantla aquí! Saw the Papantla Flyers perform their worship ceremony to the rain God just outside of El Tajin. The archaeological site is full of ancient Mayan Ruins, many of which are still covered in jungle. One of the cradles of humanity is this archaeological area. Vendors greet you on your way in to visit the ruins selling noise makers that sound like local birds and jaguars, the big cat native to these areas. The ruins feature carved stones devoted to Mayan culture and the incorporation of snakes into their worship. The ruins have to be seen to be believed. There is also an affordable restaurant near the entrance to the site offering tasty affordable food. Beautiful people, in a beautiful ancient place. Highly recommend visiting this site. If I didn't have a motorcycle I would have left with a car full of souvenirs. This area isn't far from the community of Papantla de Olarte.

This is an ancient site populated by people from about the 5th Century ad. It is very very well maintained and the people running it are very very nice when my girlfriend and I visited it was very sparse with people but even if there were 10 times as many people it would still not feel overly crowded. There are lots of vendors on your way in and they were little bit pushy but because there were so few people they had time to be pushy but they were still very friendly. The site is not enormous but it is big it took us over an hour to walk the site not everything is accessible they have a wonderful Museum that explains everything and you get to almost touch something that has more than a thousand years old that's pretty special. I highly recommend it.! Most of the stuff sold is made in China so I would avoid most of the things sold.! One thing you should buy if you love vanilla you can buy vanilla beans for about 40 pesos a piece. They are over $6 a piece in Walmart United States and 40 pesos is about $2.20. Make sure that it is not too dry

It's a beautiful place to visit. It has many pyramids. A tour guide is available at a small fee, but is not required. The museum is a must see as it speaks a lot about El Tajin. The place has many small places to eat and many areas to shop got souvenirs. You will be asked to purchase waters at the entrance but there are also items for sale inside the Tajin. To watch the ritual it's 30 pesos.
