Ephesus is probably one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world! The Library of Celsus is the most iconic landmark from Izmir. The details on the structure were so stunning. Definitely a must see when in the area! We had a tour guide who kept us informed about the history which was amazing.

I had always wondered how ancient civilizations build their colosseums, etc. On a trip to the ruins of Ephesus, I stumbled across this amazing revelation: they had cranes! Duh, history makes so much more sense now. It's really quite marvelous to see how elegantly they designed a crane to build their city, in fact it was built so well that the crane in Ephesus is still standing today and in much better condition than the piles of rocks it has outlived. Would highly recommend seeing, history is amazing ❤️

The most breathtaking architecture in Ephesus. The Library of Celsus is considered an architectural marvel, and is one of the only remaining examples of great libraries of the ancient world located in the Roman Empire. Although it is over 1,800 years old, the Library of Celsus is still standing now, albeit in a partially restored state.

It is a building like a landmark of Ephesus. The grand library entrance seemed to signify the importance of books and learning. I highly recommend listening to the audio guide. explain in detail. There are guided tours, but I think the audio guide is better. There is no shade and the sun is strong, so be careful if you go in summer.

(Translated by Google) One of the most beautiful buildings of the Roman period, the building served as both a library and a tomb monument. When Celsius, the governor of Ephesus, died in 106, his son had the library built as a grave monument in his father's name. Celsius' sarcophagus is under the western wall of the library. Its facade was restored between 1970-1980. In the library, rolls of books were hidden in niches in the walls. It was built by the Asian consul Julius Aguila by the Roman architect Vitruoya in 135 A.D. 60.5 x 16.72 m. It has two floors on the outside and 15 m on the inside. It consists of a single hall, a door on the back wall leads to Celsus' tomb. The statue of Celsus found here is in the Istanbul Archeology Museum today. The decoration of the façade of the building, which fully reflects the Roman architectural features, is among the most beautiful examples of its era. The four female statues between the front columns symbolize the elements of "mind", "destiny", "science" and "virtue". The originals of these sculptures are in the Vienna museum today. Parchment book rolls were preserved in closed shelves made of bricks on two sides in order not to be affected by moisture in the library. This library has trained some of the world's leading scientists and thinkers in its time.

One of the just a few somehow well-preserved objectives. Impressive in the size of the facade. Between the lower columns are 4 statues representing women: Sophia (wisdom), Episteme (knowledge), Ennoia (thought) and Arete (bravery). All the statues are copies, the real ones are today at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The facade you see today is the result of restoration work from the '70s. Behind the facade is a small room, where papyrus and parchment were stored.

Amazing historical place that yet is available for many generations to witness how it was created then. Tour guide told a story “possible that the library was a meeting point to take the curious to another place underground near the library structure” Marble stones stay cool even when receiving direct sunlight. Definitely a must see when in the area.

A must visit place! The Ephesus ancient city is full of rich history. Suggest to get the audio guide or a walking tour guide with you to explain the history behind it. Expect to spend about 1.5hrs here. There are also alot of cats here that are very friendly. Infront of the library there are photographers who will take your photo and print it out for 40TYL

This is a beautifully well preserved ancient Roman library, was the third largest of its kind and a must see in person! It's the most iconic building within the ancient city of Ephesus - and by far one of the most well known ruins in Turkey. The architecture is simply beyond exquisite and this was definitely my favourite ancient structure that I saw during my tour of Anatolia. There's lots of information posted inside the library, but it's even better to go in with a guide who will point out the key facts and better showcase some of the more interesting things to pay attention to.

Mesmerizing, amazing and wonderful site. A most to see in Turkey. You will need to have a professional guide to explain meticulously the historical background of each monument and place. It is highly recommended to go either in early spring or in fall. Don’t forget to wear long sleeve’s shirt and be equipped with a large hat. Having water with you is a most.

The most iconic and beautiful part of Ephesus ancient city tour. The library itself is small and has a one hall structure that's more like a reception but the facade is covered in ornate carvings and some beautiful statues upfront that make for stunning studies of the sculpting and art practices of the era. On ground this place is always heavily crowded with tourists and photographers. You can have a somewhat more sane experience visiting in the evening. It's also less hot at that time and the large tourist agencies are gone by then leaving only single travellers. Bear in mind that in summers the ticket office closes by 6pm and ephesus closes by 7pm so you can't go too late either. The city is huge and sprawling so getting lost in there in the dark isn't recommended.

(Translated by Google) We showed our guests from abroad Ephesus Celsus Library is in Selçuk, İzmir. The library, built between 115-117 in the Roman Period, has two floors. Studies on the remains of the building show that the building is three-storied, despite the two-storey appearance of the front facade. The manuscripts in roles are preserved in the upper floors consisting of galleries. 3rd century. During the earthquakes that affected the region, the reading room burned down and was later repaired. It is believed that the front of the library was destroyed as a result of an earthquake in the Middle Ages. The restoration work of the library, where many architectural pieces were well preserved, was started in 1970 by the archaeologist W. M. Strocka and the master architect F. Hueber, and this work was completed in September 1978, when the magnificent facade of the library was raised. The front face is of two floors, but the inside is 10,92x16,72 m. Consisting of a single large and high hall measuring 21 m. It rises on a platform formed by a vaulted substructure and accessed by a nine-step ladder. The Celsus Library, certainly the most well-known monument in Ephesos, was built between A.D. 100 and 110 by Gaius Iulius Aquila for his father, the senator Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaeanus. The library can actually be interpreted as a heroon which was built over the burial chamber of the deceased. A flight of nine steps at the façade, flanked by statue bases, led to a vestibule from which the actual library room could be entered. The aediculated architecture of the impressive façade contrasts with the brick construction of the building's interior, although the floors and walls were revetted with marble. The library was destroyed during an earthquake in ca. A.D. 270 and was not rebuilt. In the late antique period the remnants of the splendid façade served as the rear wall of a street fountain. The re-erection took place during the years 1970-1978 with the financial help of Anton Kallinger-Prskawetz. Crowd💀

Library Originally built in AD 115-25, this restored facade is a highlight of the ruins today. This style is believed to be the standard architectural form for Roman libraries. The interior measures 70 by 80 feet and held approximately 15,000 scrolls.

Lovely looking arches of library. Slippery rocks though, be carefull. Becoming crowded time to time as tour busses come and go. Around entrance there is a small bazar for souveniers, few small shops for drink and snacks, WC. Parking lot provided. On parking lot you can pay and get a horse carrige ride to the sight, but honesy there is no need unless you really interested in carrige ride itself. Sight is small and walking distance is pretty close plus all the way there is something to see and take pictures, explore.

Ephesus library of Celsius, magnificent library dating from the early 2nd century AD, the best known monument in Ephesus, has been extensively restored. Originally built as part of a complex, the library looks bigger that it actually is: the covex façade base heighten the central elements, while the middle column and capitals are larger than those of ends. Façade niches hold replica statues of the Four Virtues. From left to right , they are Sophia (Wisdom), Arte (Goodness), Ennoia (Thought) and Episteme (Knowledge). The third largest library in the ancient world (after Alexandra and Pergamum), it was designed to protect its 12,000 scrolls from extremes of temperatures and moisture.

(Translated by Google) A very beautiful and atmospheric place! To our great regret, only the facade remained from the library, recognizable by numerous photographs in Insta. Sitting on the steps in the shade, you need to turn on your imagination and imagine how the library looked tens of hundreds of years ago. How philosophers and disciples sat here at ancient writings. How they discussed topics of interest, and how strict librarians shouted at them.) I was lucky enough to see this beauty in the summer of 2020, when the whole world was quarantined. It is an incredible feeling, there are practically no people and you are alone in the shadow of an ancient Greek library. This is an incredible feeling! The only negative among all this splendor is the mercilessly scorching sun. +42 in the shade if you still find it. And the protective mask on the face is also "pleasure". (Translated by Google) The library is between 114 and 125 AD. Chr. commissioned by Tiberius Julius Aquila in honor of his late father Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaenus, who was the Roman governor of the province of Asia. Celsus was buried in a marble sarcophagus in the burial chamber below the library. The library is approximately 23 meters long and 17 meters deep. To give the building a more imposing appearance, a staircase with 9 steps has been built at the front. At the top of the stairs are three doors that give access to the interior space which measures approximately 17 by 11 meters. Probably the library collapsed in a fire after an earthquake at the end of the 3rd century and has not been rebuilt. The façade remained intact and was used as the back wall of a fountain after the collapse. This fountain was decorated with reliefs depicting the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus fighting the Parthians.

“The ancient city of Ephesus is Turkey’s most important ancient city, and one of the best preserved and restored. One can still stroll for hours along its streets passing temples, theatres, libraries, houses and statues. It contains such grand public buildings as the impressive Library of Celsus, the theatre, the Temple of Hadrian and the sumptuous Temple of Artemis which is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ruins also include public toilets and even a brothel dating mostly from the fourth century BC.”

(Translated by Google) It is the third largest library of antiquity and the only surviving library of today. The front wall we can see was turned into this with a restoration made between 1970/77. In fact, it is a monumental tomb built for the governor of the city, Celsus. There is still a sarcophagus in the library structure. (Original) Antik çağın 3. büyük bugünün ise ayakta kalmayı başaran tek kütüphanesi. (Translated by Google) A Library Ruins Found in Ephesus, Affiliated to zmir Selçuk. The Library, which was built in the Ionian Period, which is one of the First Age Civilizations, has two floors. It is thought to have hosted up to 14,000 books at the time. Studies on the Remains of the Building Show that the Building is Three Storey, Despite the Two-Storey View of the Front Front. The Manuscripts Are Preserved In Rolls On The Upper Floors Of The Galleries. During the earthquakes that affected the region in the 3rd century, the reading room was burned, but it was later repaired. It is assumed that the front side was destroyed as a result of an earthquake in the Middle Ages. It was used as the magnificent back wall of a fountain that was built for a long time after the earthquake, except for its front façade. Zamanında 14.000 Kadar Kitaba Ev Sahipliği Yaptığı Düşünülmektedir. Yapının Kalıntıları Üzerinde Yapılan Çalışmalar, Ön Cephenin İki Katlı Görünümüne Karşın, Yapının Üç Katlı Olduğunu Göstermektedir. El Yazmaları Rulolar Halinde, Galerilerden Oluşan Üst Katlarda Saklanmıştır. 3. Yüzyılda Bölgeyi Etkileyen Depremler Sırasında Okuma Salonu Yanmış, Ancak Daha Sonra Tamir Edilmiştir. Ön Yüzünün Yine Orta Çağ’da Yaşanan Bir Deprem Sonucu Yıkıldığı Sanlmaktadır. Depremde Ön Cephesi Haricinde Diğer Kısımları Yıkıldığından Uzunca Bir Süre Sonradan Yapılan Bir Çeşmenin Görkemli Arka Duvarı Olarak Kullanılmıştır.
