Worth a visit but a bit expensive (22,000 entry) and a tip for the volunteer guide.

Nice historical site. You can trace the history of Tanzania and the influence of various civilizations on the culture here. Check out the tombs, the 500year old baobab tree, magic well as well as other ruins. Make sure to make a stop on the way to enjoy the magnificent view of the ocean.

A place that holds so much history. You will be awed. My guide did a good job explaining all the necessary information about each building and item in the ruins. There are graves,a magic well,500 yrs old Baobab, old mosque, old port and old foundation. The entrance fee includes a guide. They only accept mobile money but don't worry,if you have cash, they will make the payment on your behalf.

This historical site is located approximately 15 minutes from Bagamoyo Bus Station, it carries the remains of the first Arab settlement in Bagamoyo. Here you'll be able to see a 13th-century mosque which is one of the oldest in East Africa, a famous tomb of lovers, a well of fresh water, Kaole old port, a baobab tree that is said to be there for over five centuries etc.

My wife and I had a delightful and memorable New Year's visit to this historical site. The rich history dating back to the 13th century offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people of that era. Exploring the architecture of their buildings and tombs provided valuable insights into their way of life. The natural environment, adorned with an abundance of trees, added to the charm of the place. It felt like stepping into a living museum, surrounded by the very elements that have witnessed centuries of history. Our tour guide played a pivotal role in making the experience even more enjoyable. Their knowledge and friendliness enhanced our understanding of the site, turning it into an engaging and educational journey. Overall, our time at this historical gem was not only nice and wonderful but also a captivating journey through time.

Great place to learn about the history of the Tanganyika people. Bagamoyo is generally a place rich on history. The private tour guide wasn't so helpful but we paid her anyway and she was able to tell us about the history of the place. I would recommend you pay a tour guide (about $5) for them to walk you through. They may struggle with English but at least they tried. The best insight we got was the lovers rock. It's believed if you touch it, love will come to you.

Bagamoto historical site....worth a visit... Kaole ruins is a small town and archaeological site located three miles east of Bagamoyo . The area contains old stone ruins dating to a period between the 13th century and the 16th century. The ruins date back to the 13th century and consist of two mosques one of 13th century and ither of 15th century around 22 tombs. The tombs at Kaole were built from coral stones with stone pillars that marked some of the tombs. According to local tradition, some of the tombs are the graves of local rulers..one of the grave is believed to be the descendants of the Sheikh Ali jumaan arguably the most well known Sheikh along the coast. Other tomb is for girl called shariffa who had karma power and knowledgeable Also theres lovers tomb who were burried together

Kaole is a national historic site located in the Bagamoyo District of the Pwani Region in Tanzania. It is located on the Indian Ocean coast and the area contains old Swahili coral stone ruins dating to a period between the 13th century and the 16th century.

I wish they put more information. If you don't have a guide with you, you wouldn't know what happened. There's a small museum nearby, tho. Visited on weekday, so there weren't much visitors. I heard it is packed with people during weekend.

One of the oldest places to visit for tour in Bagamoyo-Tanzania is Kaole ruins. I visited the place in 2013. There you can find that baobab tree that is believed to be the oldest one and they say if you want to live longer you go around each round counts for one year. There is that well which never dries and you would wash your body with the water from it as you make your petitions so as to remove all the misfortunes that may come your way. Lovers can pray at the tomb of lovers and listen to the detailed tales of Kaole ruins from the guide at the site. One thing to keep in mind is you carry you lunch box while going there for there is no restaurant around there.

This place is about the history of Tanzania before western colonization. The history of the arrival of Islam to Tanzania in about the 13th century. Although not as much information is available about the site as one would like, it is still a worthwhile visit.

Oldest, or first ever mosque built in Tanzania. Good place with deep history. Best to get a tour guide to show you around and explain historic significance of everything around there. Easily accessible from Bagamoyo town.

Lots of historic artifacts with rich ancient culture. It hosts many wonderful ruins of the historic slave and Ivory trade. These include the tombs, the magic water hole, the mangrove, the baobab tree among others.

  • 4/5 Zacharia C. 1 year ago on Google
Lovers of history and ancient culture will certainly enjoy the tour. Question is, how do buildings from the 13th century survive with such primitive construction tech but new builds from a few decades ago collapse so often?

It's mysterious that, the well's water isn't salty!, B'se it makes me wonder about this people & things about God, how could they pray and be answered? And they can see the results? Is it me/us or God in our time, who is out of phase, what It takes for our prayers to be answered? Like theirs? The grave of the two lovers is interesting though

(Translated by Google) You learn something about the story. Kaole is outside of Bagamoyo and is difficult to find. The best thing to do is to get a local companion to find out more about Bagamoyo and the German role during the colonial era.
