The Detroit Institute of Arts was an absolutely amazing experience! The exhibits, architecture, and artwork are top notch and this is one of my favorite museums I have ever visited! We spent all day here and I feel like we still didn't even scratch the surface. If I could change anything I would have planned to come right at opening so we could experience this for the entirety of opening! You will be amazed at the beauty of this museum, I highly recommend it!

I highly recommend the DIA for your wedding or event. I just recently worked with Luis who is in charge of their events at a recent wedding. It was an immaculate day. He was so attentive, on it, and knew exactly how to serve our client well. He was very communicative with vendors prior explaining things like the building lay out and parking for the event to ensure it would go seamlessly. I cannot say enough great things.

World class art museum! Spend the day wandering through the masterpieces located here. 3 floors of art as well as sculptures outside on the grounds. Terrific gift shop as well!

There is just so much to see. I could spend days just staring at the artwork. Mind you I am partial to art. We went and they had a car exhibit and they were so unique. Also seeing a real life van Gogh painting was really cool. I'd definitely go again. They also had art from Mexico, middle east, native Americans, Japan and Korea. I love international art so it was fun to look at everything. Also seeing a real life mummy was really cool but creepy to think there's a skeleton in there.

It's great place to visit. You can spend hours here looking at the greatest art from the whole world. It worth the visit. The Cafe there is so nice for coffee or drink. You can have break between visiting the different levels of the museum. The gift shop has many unique items. Make sure you are wearing something comfortable because at least you wanna spend 3 hours there. It's great place for photo shoot also. So come and enjoy the view and have great pics here.

Definitely worth a visit more than once! Loved the Architectural beauty of the building itself. The artwork is wonderfully displayed. Felt like I was walking back in time or walking into the future! The staff were friendly and ever so helpful. I suggest you get an annual pass as you cannot see everything in one day🤩

I love the DIA but the security guards are rude and full of themselves. Decided to stop by with a photography friend of mines and she brought a small personal tripod for herself which no one said anything about it as we got our tickets, proceeded through the door, got some lunch and I helped her set it up in the lobby where the security and some workers looked on. An hour later as we were exploring a exibit a shorter older lady security guard stopped us and told us that we had to leave because of the tripod. We didnt understand why but she was set on embaressing my poor friend and made a scene in the lobby when my friend just kept apologizing and said she could fold it and place it back into her bag (since it literally folded that tiny). The security continued to tell us that it was against their policy which there wasn't any signs against tripods posted anywhere in the lobby and when we asked about the sign a bigger male security guard said it was in their book and asked if we would like to see it... (How could we know what is posted in the policy book?) If that were the case someone should have stopped us at the desk, if they had she would have just left it in the car or ran it back in the first place. This rude security officer continued her loud protest in front of people even after we already told her that we had no issues with putting it back in the car but it was the last hour and with such a negative experience after returning to the car we didn't bother even coming back. My friend was upset and embaressed almost to the point of tears as its a trip we planned for a while and looked forward to but with such unprofessional security guards I don't think she will even be back and I dont blame her. If something is prohibited post signs out for it so people know ahead of time.

My first visit to the DIA in 2012 was unforgettable. I’ve returned a few times since then. Diego’s Court is an area in the museum that displays one of Diego Rivera’s amazing and timeless pieces. It feels as if you are there within the art, coming alive with the art, and alongside painting with Diego.

We had an incredible experience! If you are an art fan you should definitely check out this museum. So many artworks from ancient times to contemporary. We went there on Friday and it was FREE, but you need to register online. I highly recommend it!

This place is beautiful! The staff is so wonderful and friendly and helpful. You can buy tickets once you get there but if you buy them in advance, it goes faster. Elevators and stairs, bathrooms on every floor. 3 floors total. Price of tickets aren't bad either. Went to the Van Gogh exhibit, but will definitely be back to see the rest.

One of the highlights for sure is to see the Diego Rivera mural. This mural is enormous in size and absolutely mesmerizing. This will be my second visit here and I really enjoyed both of my visits. During this last visit I had the opportunity to see a wonderful photography exhibit by James Barnor, this series followed his work from his early days of filming in black and white to his later years of using color. I enjoyed the photos so much I bought his book. I love this museum and will continue to visit it each time I pass through Michigan. Detroit is a fabulous city with much more to offer than expected and this museum is the same. Parking is easy, staff are friendly and helpful, there is a cafeteria and a indoor cafe that feels like you are in an outdoor courtyard. There is a great gift shop, beautiful building, clean bathrooms and many exhibits of all types. Whatever type of art you are interested in they have something that will satisfy! Support the arts and this community and pay a visit here and just down the street check out the modern art museum as well.

I have been visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts now for over 20 years. If I'm ever feeling depressed or melancholy this is always a trip that is sure to cheer me up. So much so that I've been a member and like to donate when I can. Walking these halls and seeing all of the wonderfully beautiful art is just a sure way to brighten up anyone's day. Now I can take my son and he too can enjoy all these works of history. To stand in front of some of these pieces is like looking back to a simpler time and simultaneously can ground you to the reality of life. Please if you visit Detroit or plan to make this one of your stops. I promise you won't regret it. And if you somehow do regret it you can be sure to come yell at me 😅!

Large museum with lots to see. The exhibits don’t flow very well, so take a map to be able to follow your path if you want to make sure you see everything. Very cool cafe inside, museum architecture itself is interesting. Weekend day was not too crowded in the afternoon which was nice. $14 for adult, $8 if you’re a student, reasonable prices.

I am a huge museum visitor, and this collection is by far one of the best I’ve seen in the US. Not only that, but the courtyards are stunning. I only spent about five hours here and saw maybe 1/3? I recommend visiting it over two days. Enjoy lunch or drinks in the cafe- the flatbread and summer drinks were amazing. All in all, this is one of my top places to visit recently. I highly recommend.

The DIA is one of the best art institutes/museums I’ve been to across the US. It is a beautiful staple of Detroit. It takes you on a journey of cultures across the Globe. This is a top choice I recommend to people coming to the D. And on top of that customer service here is wonderful.

This is truly a world-class museum. In my particular area of interest, Medieval through Baroque art, the collection is equal to the best. The Dutch and American paintings have few peers. This is an encyclopedic collection, and there are excellent Native American and Asian sections, although the Egyptian and Classical collections are not a strong point. I spent three blissful days here and didn't see everything; I'll definitely be back!

Beaaaaautiful establishment. The best art museum I have ever been to. We walked 5miles inside this building there was so much to see, we didn’t get to finish all of it we were there from 1-5 pm and had to zoom through all of it to see more I wish we could’ve spent more time admiring the art. A wonderful date idea, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and got a good work out in haha. I really wanted to be able to go into the lounge area because of the gothic architecture but it was closed due to COVID but I could see it still and snapped a few pictures. Hopefully next time I will be able to hang out in that area.

Loved the exhibits here, they were very nice although the layouts were a tad bit confusing they had a lot of nice pieces here. However I don’t advise coming here during this pandemic at all, I came here with my family, we he a group of 8 people. We were constantly followed, watched and harassed by staff, we were not around other people majority of the time and any time we moved our masks for a second the same fat security guard magically popped up out of nowhere telling us we couldn’t take our masks down for a family picture, god forbid we do that when nobody else is around. As we were leaving, one of our group had taken their mask down for a moment and a employee happened to walk by and immediately told her to pull it back up despite nobody being around once again. We will most likely not be returning, employees will be Watching you the whole time.

Reserved 4 tickets a couple of days in advance, showed the email at the door & walked right in past the line. Such breathtaking art was truly more enjoyable with so many less people around! Social distancing & sanitizer everywhere . Staff was super friendly & helpful. Truly an amazing museum on every level.

Absolutely Splendid 5 stars for Architecture 5 Stars on the Monet Exhibit and 5 Stars on the wonderful disposition of the well appointed staff. Kudos on a job well done. If you’re looking for a perfect Sunday outing you’ve found it. It’s been a while so I’m adding additional pics today during Covid. The DIA is still open and in its absolute splendor. Safety measures are in place. Must order tickets in advance. Temperature taken at entry point and roping throughout check points to maintain safety and CDC guidelines. It was quite refreshing to enjoy the museum virtually to ourselves. Hours are differing due to new measures and policies in place. Continued excellent service, handicap accessible, elevators, spacious corridors and food options during normal openings. No current dine in.

Did you know this is the #1 art museum in America??! Right in the Downtown Detroit! And it’s FREE for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb residents. We had so much fun learning about the European Renaissance, Native America artifacts and the art room had hands-on activities for the kids. It was so peaceful yet bustling in other areas. The staff and volunteers were so helpful, they really love the arts and are eager to assist. When you arrive you’ll get a day pass. It can be used for the whole day, so if you wish to leave and come back that’s up to you. There’s so much to explore so we definitely will be going back. It’s way more than hanging art, with eye spy games throughout the exhibits and opportunities to set up and draw on specified nights. My daughter gained so much from soaking in how different art forms are made and was een interested in reading about the art and artist. A must go if you live or are visting Detroit. Parking isn’t hard to find. They have a lot and it was $7 when we went, but we parked right in front off Woodward.

Excellent customer service from Cameron at the entrance, which was the start of an amazing experience of artwork displayed from many eras and with famous artists and different cultures. We were there for a couple of hours and did not complete a full tour. Looking forward to coming back. The museum’s store was full of many wonderful collections of jewelry, clothing, tableware, books and more. I thoroughly enjoyed the time there. Also the food was amazing from the courtyard.

This museum is amazing! I could spend days here. The quality of art is superb, and the collection is vast and comprehensive. Rembrandt, Hals, fra Angelico, impressionists, and many others all represented. Important to know, the bulk of the European collection is on 2nd floor, but Dutch Golden Age, British and part of the French masters - on the 3rd. Apparently there is an audioguide (i saw some audio icons) but I did not bother this time as the signage also was perfect, not overly detailed and informative. Many rooms are beautifully decorated, one - by Diego Rivera. There is a caffee (did not try).

A tremendous collection of art pieces from all over the world, covering centuries of different cultures. Very impressive and certainly a “good deal” for the cost of entry. I would knock off 0.5 stars if it were possible, simply because the layout of the rooms becomes very confusing and you may end up missing some exhibits because you almost get lost on the floors. Wish the flow was just a bit better organized…

There are so many exhibits to check out. It's nice to wander in and out of rooms filled with ancient to modern items. It's a really nice collection. Make sure you have about 4 hours to see everything and grab a bite in the cafe. Lots of decent options to chose from. Parking across the street is convenient and only $7.

We always love the DIA. We haven't been in a couple years, but I got the special tickets and took my oldest the other weekend, since we can't do anything else for their birthday this year. The museum was entertaining as ever and they were awesome with their pandemic safety measures. You can't just walk in, you have to reserve your spot because they're only allowing a certain number of people in at once. Temp checks before you check in, doors closed expect for one entry and exit for each exhibit, signs and arrows on the floor indicating the way everyone is to walk, small exhibits have signs saying one at a time, and most everyone we did encounter was extremely respectful of social distancing and everyone wore their mask properly. There was one younger couple we saw a couple of times who weren't taking the precautions seriously, and security actually came and talked to them about it. They're doing a great job, can't wait to go back.

Wonderful area! I got cornered by two nice black men who asked me for some money. They had a gun, so I showed them my baby as well. They screamed for everyone to run, and I don't know why. That was weird. I hope the fire stops soon, though! I don't know what could've caused it.

Historical Society usually conjures up stuffy images and an excluding environment. The Detroit Historical Society Museum? Not so! It's completely, well, we'll get to that part in just a wee bit, open to the public and entrance fare free. Anyway, a hint, what’s the point of addressing all of its shortcomings if you’re just going to go ahead and do the “wrong” thing anyway, right? Went there on a date. Now, usually the place you go with your date is just an excuse to get closer, but I've got to say, I found the museum to be actually very interesting! Basically, a series of exhibits showing the history and importance of Detroit. So, of course you've got your robber barons in there - the big three auto Co's - Motown, our sports teams, plus, exhibits showing how Detroit looked in the olden days. Also, most everything else that has put Detroit on the map. Now, following up on that hint: everything is very sketchy: you don't get the full inside dope. One plus to the clubby historical societies is that they've got the original stuff you're searching for. Of course, getting access to it can sometimes mean jumping through some hoops. Although I'm just guessing here, it would be my suscpicion that prying the good stuff out of the Detroit Historical society might be a wee bit more strenuous. So. Summing up: interesting stuff, more like a quick overview, it's free, and, well, guess that's the sum of it.

The building itself is completely beautiful, but you can't see everything in one day. I spent about 3 hours there and I need to go back. There are three floors packed with art of all kinds. Elevators are large, masks are required, and you can make your reservation online. I'm going again at the first chance I get. It was an emotional experience, so much beauty, so much raw feeling, if you haven't been definitely go. There are hand sanitizer stations throughout.

This is a nice art museum. I went here while I was in Detroit and was satisfied with my experience. This museum has lots of nice art. There’s a Mesopotamian section, Renaissance section, Asian art section, African art section, Medieval art section,Photography section, and a section with art from the time period of Pablo Picasso (I do not know what that’s called). The museum is very fancy, being made entirely of marble. Outside of the museum, there’s a public plaza with a large fountain and a staircase up to the main lobby of the museum. In the lobby, there’s a large mural showing factory workers building an automobile, which looks pretty good. I gave this museum five stars because it has lots of nice art and a nice lobby.

Incredible museum! This place is huge. We came right at 9am and it was great, quiet and not a lot of people until later on. It’s beautiful here and so much to see. We spent about 3 hours and still wasn’t enough to get through the whole place. The little cafe is beautiful, great spot to grab a coffee and snack while taking a break. The DIA is a gorgeous staple of Detroit which boasts some of the most organic and authentic artwork that encompasses so many cultures. They also have live performances of rotating performers most Friday nights. Last night we had the pleasure of seeing a group of musicians from Ghana. They were incredible! Everyone in the room felt the passion. It was so neat to be at the DIA in the evening, and I can’t wait for another show and to see their next art display! My work team has also brought our classes for a field trip and the students enjoyed it!

The DIA is great, and taking precautions to ensure the safety of guests during the pandemic by having certain entrances closed so that there is an in and an out flow of through exhibits. I made a reservation and came after class, getting in was quick and simple. I was hoping that an hour would be enough time, but I only got through about half of the first floor. I would suggest planning at least two hours if not longer to really appreciate all the art in the museum.

The art is great however, I would not recommend coming here during the pandemic. The security guards hounded us about masks the second it slipped below our noses. Our group was very quiet and polite, however, one heavy set guard in particular took a liking to us and would do laps around whichever wing we were in. Would not recommend.

Beautiful art, but it seems it's for the staff only. They hound you through every room. Guilty until proven innocent. Btw don't bring a backpack style purse, you will be carrying it the entire time. Not enjoyable if you have arthritis. The shop staff is nice, but that's about it. I'm done with this place, I've been to other museums and this treatment is not normal.

If you live in Macomb, Oakland, or Wayne county, this museum should be a regular on your To Do list. Even during COVID, they're doing a great job of keeping entries staggered, exhibits are mainly 1-way to reduce cross traffic, and enough employees are posted up to help you if you need to find your way around. Wonderful place for a family excursion.

Free entry but donate and support a good cause. Clean and nice Great gift shop The displays are great . There is not an annoying amount of interactive displays like the majority of museum are greedily latching on to these days. Great for groups. Clean well put together and well kept. Such an amazing establishment to visit. The history and authenticity had me in awe the entire time. It is FREE admission, but they happily accept donations. Parking is $9, which is absolutely worth the exploration and interaction you get inside.

Omg, I love the DIA. Thank you for moving the Alberto Giacometti from the 3rd floor to the main "Great Hall". This is one of my favorite things to visit when ever I go the DIA. She is so simple and so amazing & fantastic, she makes my heart flutter. It's crazy that she's made of metal. Is it possible for you to move her "Standing Woman II" to the middle of the great Hall so I can see the sides and back of her too? Thank you w.Hawkins Ferry for donating her for us to enjoy.

Working at the DIA for just over 20 years has been an eye opening experience. Challenges await around every corner of working here. I have learned a lot about culture, working relationships, & learning how museum behind the scene, work. Every department has very unique individuals putting it all together!! Post Covid-19 (had to include "That part") I can't wait to see where the DIA is headed. So far, during this pandemic, we're working together. I applaud my coworkers from all over the building, for being so vigilant about keeping themselves, and looking out for everyone else...SAFE. As often as we do. ❤🙌 The museums art collection is world renowned! The art keeps pulling me in. Captivates culture the way I've never seen before.. The building is history and beauty within itself. God Bless the DIA. ❤

It could be so much better. Exhibits are lacking, the staff's attitudes need to be checked as well. I didn't feel very welcome here. Too blunt and cold, like they hated being there and giving me simple directions. One nice employee though. Alas, if I go again there is a 99.9% chance it will be against my will. I love the DIA so very much and I often will visit in the month of February for my birthday. Everyone is taking the pandemic very seriously and are spacing out guests and allowing people to have room to enjoy the art. Masks over the nose and mouth are required FYI there is no food to eat. Restaurants in the cafe are closed to guests.

What great night out in Detroit to see the lights. It was a perfect beginning to the weekend. There is just so much to be seen and remembered from when I was a little girl growing up here and now a mommy bringing her daughter here to see all the wonderful things that I was exposed to and to open her creative mind. Thank you for a spectacular night at th DIA!!!

Much more than i expected because of the pandemic rules. December 2022 - came here to see the Van Gogh exhibit. It was great and worth going. You can get audio or do it on your phone, I think. They hand you a booklet with information about the painting. They have a coat check. The spot to get food, the wine was good and so was a Danish treat. Wasn't overly priced. I posted some photos just to show what you will see. They do have a blue line on the ground to keep you back from the painting.

  • 5/5 Carol Daniels K. 1 year ago on Google
Very clean, well laid out, sufficient space to view paintings and artwork with others nearby, knowledgeable staff. Excellently exhibited Van Gogh paintings. Was NOT impressed with the recorded oral presentation - was childish as far as I listened - unnecessary, anyway, so it didn't matter. The booklet handed out was sufficient and the experience was great!

Fantastic art museum with friendly staff members! Upon entering, I was met by an enthusiastic staff member who explained the layout of the museum to me, and then struck by the majestic Great Hall. But the highlight lied beyond the great hall - seeing Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals in person was such an awe-inspiring experience! There were staff members stationed in the area, one of whom had a great chat with me surrounding my questions about the murals. The Rivera murals was not the only reason that made the visit worthwhile - I found that the museum has quite a comprehensive art collection, not just of Western art movements from medieval to modern times, but also of non-Western art. The African and Islamic galleries were pretty good-sized, although the Egyptian gallery was a bit disappointing. It would have also been nice if the museum put more thought into the re-creations of the cultures' architecture; the current re-creations seemed half-baked with artifacts combined with modern materials. Depite that, the interior architecture of the museum was quite varied and worth seeing for an architecture enthusiast. I liked the modern designs of the stairs and Prentis Court as well as the historic-comtemporary charms of Kresge Court (which very well reflects the identity of the city!). In all, I only had 2.5 hours to spend at the museum and that was only enough for an in-depth visit to about half of the galleries. A jewel and a must-visit in the city!

Good museum with a variety of collections. A variety of collections from across the world. Some areas are better represented than others in terms of history of the art from the region. Some interactive bits across the galleries for young patrons. A few more interactive moments would be nice, and would provide more talking points for groups who visit the galleries. Asia, Africa, and Hellenistic collections are good introductions to the arts. The gallery on Egypt showcases select pieces, and makes for a great introduction to the culture. Native American section represents art pieces from the south, central and north America. Residents of Wayne county have free entry on select days at the museum.

This museum is lovely. There is a little bit and a lot of everything for everyone's art interests. I love seeing the large murals (and learning more about them) as well as the other art of all sizes. It really goes on and on and it's larger than I expected. I came after a day at a conference, so I planned to spend a few evening hours. I really did enjoy every minute. I love that the labels give context and additional information. I left knowing more about art. There's also a very lovely gift shop!

  • 5/5 Lori G. 7 months ago on Google
The museum has an amazing and diverse collection. My particular favorites were the Native American, Impressionists, and Modern exhibits. And the gift shop is a collection all by itself! Amazing! I even enjoyed the curry chicken salad at their Cafe. I didn't see everything, and I'll definitely return!

We hadn’t visited DIA in 25 years. We recently moved back to Michigan and visited with my daughter and son-in-law who we’re visiting from Oregon. Because my husband and I are Wayne county residents and seniors, our admittance was free! The exhibits were well organized and had great items from centuries of art, religious objects, glass and period furniture pieces. The only downside was the glass displays had dust bunnies and dusty shelves. Can’t wait to go back. We also plan to visit the Detroit Historical Museum, which we haven’t visited since we were children. Here’s some photos from our visit mid-August 2023.
