Церковь была построена по типовому проекту военных храмов, утверждённому Строительной комиссией в 1901 году (арх. Фёдор Михайлович Вержбицкий). Всего в Российской Империи к 1917 году было выстроено не менее 64-х таких церквей. Данный храм для 206-го пехотного Сальянского полка (до 1910 года именовавшегося 262-м пехотным), расквартированного в Баку, был заложен 6 Мая 1908 года, выстроен целиком на средства Военного министерства, и торжественно освящён 6 декабря 1909 года. До этого полк использовал старую полковую Михаило-Архангельскую церковь в центре города, также сохранившуюся доныне. С 1890 года священником этого полка являлся Иоанн Виссарионович Лиадзе (сведения на 1914 год).

Посчастливилось побывать на рождественской службе. Это одно из самых ярких впечатлений от пребывания в Азербайджане. Собор знаменит тем, что в нём находится ковчег с частицей святых мощей Апостола Варфоломея, который считается покровителем города Баку.

Мы попали на службу, был праздник Вознесения Господня. Подошли купить свечи, и нас отвели сразу к мощам Св Варфоломея: Вы же гости, давайте без очереди, местные всегда успеют) тут же можно было попить чаю)) Потрясающая доброжелательность, хотя это относится ко всем бакинцам без исключения!!!
