(Translated by Google) Alley of Martyrs (Azeri Şəhidlər Xiyabanı; until 1990 - Kirov Park / Nagorny Park, Azeri. Kirov Parks / Daғlyg Park) - a cemetery in Baku where the "martyrs" are buried - mostly victims of Black January (126 people) and Azerbaijanis who died in the Karabakh war. There is also an unnamed mass grave in the Alley, in which the unidentified bodies of the dead are buried. A Muslim cemetery used to be located on the site of the Alley of Martyrs, where the victims of the March 1918 events in Baku were buried. From the time of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic until 1939, the Martyrs Avenue was the cemetery of Chambarak. Among the others, prominent figures of Azerbaijan were buried in the cemetery: Alirza Rasizade, Samedbek Mehmandarov, Jalil Mammadkulizade, Midhat Mammadguluzade, Abdurragim-bek Akhverdiev, Najaf-bez Vezirov, Huseyn Arablinsky, Aga Musa Nagiyev, Akhdeyamyabyabdyani . The chief architect of Baku, Ziver-bek Akhmedbekov, prepared the Chambarak memorial complex to perpetuate the memory of the Azerbaijani and Turkish military personnel who died during the liberation of the city in September 1918. In 1935, this cemetery was liquidated; some of the burials were moved by relatives to other cemeteries. In its place, the Park of Culture and Rest named after S. M. Kirov was laid out and its statue was installed. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the park was liquidated, the statue of Kirov, as well as entertainment facilities, were removed. After the tragedy, on January 21, 1990, a commission was created on the funeral of those who gave their lives for the independence of Azerbaijan. The commission was headed by Doctor of Sciences Azer Nabiyev. The place for the burial of martyrs was determined by Azer Nabiyev together with the chairman of the Executive Committee of People’s Deputies of the district named after 26 Baku commissars of the city of Baku Ali Mammadov. When choosing a place, the recommendations of the architect Nariman Aliyev were also taken into account. On January 21, 1990, after the farewell ceremony on Azadlig Square (azerb. Azadlıq meydanı - “Freedom Square”, formerly “Lenin Square”), the bodies of those killed during the tragic events on the night of January 19-20, 1990 were transferred to Nagorny Park. . On January 20-21, more than 120 graves were dug in the alley. The funeral lasted several hours. On January 22, another 50 people were buried. Three of them were victims of the March 1918 massacre, whose bodies were found in the park when digging graves. On all three graves is written "Martyrs of 1918." Flowers were laid on the graves and in the places of death of the martyrs, mainly red carnations, which became a symbol of mourning in Azerbaijan. The idea of creating a complex of monuments "Eternal Flame" was first proposed in 1994. On August 5, 1998, President Heydar Aliyev issued an order on the construction in Baku of the Eternal Flame altar in the Alley of Martyrs. The executive power of the city of Baku decided to build the Eternal Flame memorial complex, and the Cabinet of Ministers allocated 2 billion manats for the construction of the complex. The grand opening of the memorial complex took place on October 9, 1998. In 1996, with the assistance of the Turkish authorities, a Shahid Mosque was built on the Alley of Martyrs. The mosque was closed for reconstruction from 2009 to 2017. The first grave at the entrance to the Alley of Martyrs belongs to a married couple, Fariza and Ilham Allahverdiyev: Ilham was shot dead by servicemen of the Soviet army on January 20, and Fariza, having learned about the death of her husband, committed suicide.

In the closing days of World War I, fighting broke out in Baku as a result of the Russian Civil War, with four groups fighting for control of the area when the Russian Empire collapsed. Fighting each other were the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Armenians and Azeris. Many people were killed in the fighting including some from a small British force sent to prevent Baku falling into the hands of the Russians. The Martyrs' Lane site first served as Muslim cemetery for victims of the March Events of 1918. The cemetery was completely destroyed and the corpses removed after the Bolsheviks came to power, who created an amusement park on the site and installed a statue of Sergei Kirov, the prominent Bolshevik leader. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the statue and the amusement park facilities were removed and the location was reinstated as a burial site for national heroes. The first buried at the newly instated memorial were those who had died during the Black January events of 1990 when Soviet forces invaded Baku. The memorial was next used for the burial of the bodies of men who died in the Nagorno-Karabakh War, an armed conflict that took place from February 1988 to May 1994, in the small enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in southwestern Azerbaijan, between the majority ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh backed by Armenia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Historically iconic place and very most important part of not only Baku and Azerbaijan, but also post Soviet countries. It is located in where you can see almost all points of Baku when you visit there. And importantly, lots of greens! here you can admire the beauty of the background in the shade of trees and real world history. During the Soviet Union this alley was known as Kirov Park, named after the Soviet Bolshevik leader. After the massacre of 1990 by Soviet troops, which is annually commemorated by all Azerbaijanis on 20 January, this park has become an alley of martyrs (“Shahidlar Xiyabani” in Azerbaijani). Now it is a symbol of pride of Azerbaijan and its independence.

The place is panoramic from the hill side to the new places like old town and the flaming towers. Its pleasant to walk and especially during winter in the morning breeze. I like it but it's one time visit if you are not into scenes or sports. There is another place next to it with nice garden near the carpet museum.

The alley of shahids is the administrative territory of Baku, where the fallen for the freedom and independence of the motherland rest. Azerbaijanis and Turkish soldiers who died in the battles for the liberation of Baku from the Bolshevik-Dashnak occupation in 1918, as well as the victims of the tragic January events of 1990 and the heroes of the Karabakh war are buried here. In this quarter, once called Chemberkend, the bodies of victims of the massacre, organized by Armenians in March 1918 in Baku, were buried. After the establishment of Soviet power in Baku, the cemetery was destroyed, and in its place was “Nagorny Park”. After the victims of the January events of 1990 were buried here, the territory became known as Shahidlyar Khiyabany.

In January of 1990 riots on street was building up day by day. We would call it Black January afterward. Hundreds of thousands of people required their national freedoms and democracy. The wave of revolt was increasing and we were just a step away from our independence. To extinguish the riot Soviets called their army and tanks to the city and killed 146 people overnight on January 20. Hundreds injured and more got to jail. This did not bring us independence immediately, however, the national spirit grew stronger. The highland park had chosen respectfully as martyr alleys and people were carrying martyrs on their shoulders from Freedom square to here to bury. From the day people look at Highland Park as a pilgrimage.

(Translated by Google) [The Martyrs' Promenade] is a cemetery and monument in Baku. It is used to commemorate the victims of the Nagorno-Karabakh war killed by the Soviet army in the black of January 1990. Soviet leader Gorbachev believes that it is necessary to use military to stop the violence against Armenians to obstruct the efforts of the Azerbaijani independence movement to overthrow the Soviet Azerbaijani government. In the years that followed, Gorbachev admitted that the decision was a mistake, but it did not make sense for more than 130 dead civilians. This place is clean, tidy and peaceful.
