During our short stay in Baku, we hired a photographer to have a photoshoot in the city. We chose old city as the theme and they took us to this location for the photoshoot which was perfect! The old European architecture was stunning and there were even souvenir stalls in the area.

The Paired Fortress Gates are a magnificent architectural marvel. Their grandeur and historical significance make them a must-visit landmark. The intricate details and craftsmanship of the gates are truly awe-inspiring. Walking through them transports you to a bygone era. The gates serve as a gateway to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. They are a testament to the resilience and strength of the past, while standing as a symbol of pride for the present. The Paired Fortress Gates are a must-see destination for history buffs and those seeking a glimpse into the past.

Paired Fortress Gate or Gate of Shah Abbas is the ancient entrance to the fortress of Baku in the northern wall. Now, the fortress has been integrated into modern-day life as part of the structure is converted into eateries and cafes where people gathered and chill

Double City or City inside the City. There is wall around it, you can find ruins of old irrigation building, church, palace of Shirvanshahs, maiden tower, etc. It was mixed with newly built structure same Architectural idea of the past. Some ruins in far left part near the main entrance are left without information board, details of what was structure built for. Restaurants are available inside, incase you feel hungry. Money exchange is available near the main entrance. Public toilet is available also.

The Shamakhi Gate, also known as the “Pair Fortress Gate” (azerb. Qoşa qala qapısı) is one of the main entrances to Icheri Sheher. Until the end of the 19th century, the Shemakha gates were the only (they were also called the gates of “Shah Abbas”) gates of the fortress. In 1868, the military governor of Baku appealed to the Caucasian Military District with a proposal to demolish the fortress walls in order to improve the city. Two years later, it was allowed to demolish the outer tier of the walls. In 1886, this question was once again raised at a meeting of the Duma, and the second tier of the fortress walls was demolished, and the gates of the second tier, called the gates of Zulfugar Khan, were placed next to the Shemakha gate. And thus, the concept of “Pair fortress gates” appeared. Today, through the Shemakha gate passes one of the two automobile entrances to Icherisheher (you can also get from the side of Neftyanikov Avenue). Those who wanted to visit the Old Town by car should remember that entry there is paid. At the entrance you will have to pay two manats, and each additional hour of stay will cost another manat.

Good area to visit if you are a history lover Exploring Baku's Old City was an absolute delight. The rich history and charming architecture transported me to another time. Walking through the narrow alleyways, I could feel the stories of centuries echoing through the walls. The preserved landmarks, like the Maiden Tower and Shirvanshah's Palace, were captivating glimpses into the past. The blend of modern cafes and traditional shops added to the vibrant atmosphere. Baku's Old City is a must-visit for anyone seeking a journey through time and culture.

(Translated by Google) In the Middle Ages there were 5 entrances to the city wall. From the handwritten records of the restoration of the fortress to the north of the mid-1950s, it was learned that the fortress of Baku was based on the instructions of Shirvanshah III (1120-1149). The book, which was discovered as a result of the flight of one of the tower's hemispheres, informs this. In the Middle Ages, the old city was surrounded by double tower walls, which protected it from external attacks. At the beginning of the 20th century, the military governor of Baku appealed to the Caucasus Military Department to demolish the city and demolish its fortress as a military fortress. In 1870 it was allowed to demolish the second tower wall from abroad. In 1886, this issue was raised again at a meeting of the fog, and it was decided that the door to the second castle wall, called the Gate of Zulfugar khan, would be built near the gate of the first Abbas Gate. The medicines are fed on the farm. The tomb is carved in Arabic alphabet and inscribed with a bull's head and glaze with symbols of the city. The walls were surrounded by ditches from outside, and at the time of danger, these trenches were filled with water through special canals. The ditch between the first and second floors of the fortress was filled with oil and burned during enemy attacks. So, to get to the city, you had to go through water and fire. In the Middle Ages, Icheri Sheher, which is 1,500 meters in length, survives about 600 meters. The fortress wall was built of finished limestone. Currently, the thickness of the fortress wall is 3-3.5 meters and its height is 8-12 meters. It is our duty to protect this fortress from all the trials of history (Original) Orta əsrlərdə Qala divarında şəhərə 5 giriş qapısı var idi. Qаlа divаrının şimаl tərəfindən 1950-ci illərin ortalarında аpаrılаn bərpа işləri zаmаnı tаpılmış yаzılı dаş kitabədən məlum оlmuşdur ki, Bаkının qаlа divаrı Şirvаnşаh III Mənuçöhrün (1120-1149) göstərişi ilə təqribən 1138 -1139 — cu illərdə inşа оlunmuşdur. Qalanın yarımbürclərindən birinin uçması nəticəsində aşkar olunmuş yazılı kitabə bu haqda məlumat verir. Orta əsrlər dövründə köhnə şəhər ikiqat qala divarları ilə əhatə olunmuşdur ki, bu da onu xarici hücumlardan qoruyurdu. XX əsrin əvvəllərində 1868-ci ildə Bakının hərbi qubernatoru şəhərin abadlaşdırılması, onun hərbi müdafiə istehkamı kimi ləğv edilməsi məqsədilə qala divarının sökülməsi barəsində Qafqaz Hərbi Dairəsinə müraciət edir. 1870-ci ildə xaricdən ikinci qala divarının sökülməsinə icazəsi verilir. 1886-cı ildə dumanın iclasında bu məsələ bir daha qaldırılır və qərara alınır ki, sökülən ikinci qala divarında olan «Zülfüqar xanın darvazası» adlanan qapı birinci qala divarında yerləşən Şah Abbas darvazası yanında qurulsun. Dаrvаzаlаr tаğbənd fоrmаdа tаmаmlаnır. Tаğbəndin üstündə isə ərəb əlifbаsı ilə inşааt yаzısı və qаbаrıq şəkildə şəhərin rəmzi оlаn öküz bаşı, şir rəsmləri həkk оlunmuşdur. Xaricdən divarları xəndək əhatə edirdi, təhlükə anında bu xəndəklər xüsusi kanallar vasitəsilə ilə su ilə doldurulurdu. Qala divarlarının birinci və ikinci qatının arasında da xəndək neft ilə doldurulurdu və düşmən hücumu zamanı yandırılırdı. Beləliklə, şəhəri almaq üçün su və oddan keçmək lazım idi. Orta əsrlərdə uzunluğu 1500 metr olan İçəri şəhər qala divarından hal-hazırda təqribən 600 metri salamat qalmışdır. Qаlа divаrı yоnulmuş əhəng dаşındаn tikilmişdir. Hаzırdа Qala divarının qаlınlığı 3-3,5, hündürlüyü isə 8-12 mеtr təşkil edir. Tarixin bütün sınaqlarından çıxan bu müdafiə istehkamını qorumaq hər birimizin borcudur
