A great museum and you should visit if you want to know about Irish history. Definitely you will need at least 2 hours just to see the items which they have. You will love it if you like history, they have items dating back to 2500bc. The building itself is great to see. Toilets are there inside museum. Wheelchair accessible is there. The entrance is free for all..

Great experience and exhibition. Vikings, ancient Egypt are impressive. I love this place don't to mention building itself. Unfortunately the beautiful entrance presently is renovated and you will have to come again to see it.

Went for my birthday (7th June) with the family, kids loved it and so did we, some very interesting items and a lot enriched with History but unfortunately we had a this big guy of a security guard follow us constantly from exhibit to exhibit and even followed us outside when leaving where the benches are outside the front entrance. Why he was following us, I don’t know? It’s not like we’re thief’s or grave robbers, just a family of 5 trying to enjoy a birthday. Quite disappointing really as it did ruin the experience.

Pretty interesting museum and has a good selection of exhibits. Worth a visit if you have time but nothing to plan a day around. Currently undergoing some reconstruction and that ruins the flow of the museum and half the exhibits were closed and you had to enter through the gift shop which was very messy. Might be better when it’s finished

A really fascinating place to go most of the finds are from Dublin castle. The museum is multi story with some amazing artefacts, the museum is free and not far from the town centre in easy walking distance.

Really good place given the free entry. Excellent Viking component that shows no-one drove them out of Ireland, rather they form the basis of the country and integrated and contributed to its foundation and development. Very good Bronze Age jewellery and early prehistory. Excellent museum, good shop and great cafe highly recommended 👍 👌 😀 👏 😊 🙂 👍 👌 😀 👏

Very interesting, lots to see with videos and great descriptions that really tell a story. The new Viking exhibit is colorful and lively which is ironic for a archeology museum, kids seems very engaged and the building itself and beautiful with amazing architecture.

A visit to the museum is a good way to spend a rainy afternoon. Nevertheless this place is fine on other days too. It's a bit small when compared to the other museums that I've visited. But it still retains its charm( some is lost due to the construction and upgradation works). Go ahead and give it a shot.

The most interesting thing about the museum is definitely the beautiful and marvellous building it's situated in. The exhibition itself is really ordinarily curated and made, with no modern approach, but there are still captivating things to see. The entry is free, which is amazing.

A surprisingly large museum with many famous and beautiful items. The context is great and the presentation is informative. I didn't finish the museum because I was tired. I highly recommend a visit. The shop is nice

One of the best museums I have visited. It has a great collection of everything you need to understand the history of a country. I was pleasantly surprised with this visit that it is also open to the public for free.

Fascinating exhibits. Even if the place is undergoing renovation now it’s still pretty big and lots of things to see. I went a little late so didnt get to see all the sections. Im already impressed of what i saw esp the vikings exhibit but will comeback for those i missed. I think this place is worth the visit when you are in Dublin and the entrance is free!

A really nice museum. It's not very big so you can just visit in 1hour but it's very well made. The visit starts with lots of items from the steel era and you can observe really nice and well preserved swords. The descriptions are well documented, maybe a little bit tricky for non-english-speaking people since it has a lot of vocabulary we are not used to. Upstairs you can see more differents items such as religious staff and a lot of viking vestiges. They even offer small activities like listening to poems or reproducing Irish pattern on paper. The visit is totally free so you don't have to book any tickets. The venue is really beautiful so if you are in the center of Dublin, maybe give it a try.

I just loved this museum. It is very manageable to visit it within a couple of hours so you don’t get overwhelmed. My top pick would be the bog bodies as they are so well preserved. Laid out in an excellent manner with plenty of description. Lots of information about the Viking period too which I thoroughly enjoyed.

This museum is a must-see! Firstly, it's more than worthy of a donation since admission is free, but the facility and artifacts are priceless. It's not so huge that you are overwhelmed, but big enough so it's not crowded. It's in Ireland, so no need to say how friendly the people are; so polite, wonderful, and helpful. And, there are bog bodies.

A lot more impressive than I expected. Exploring the history surrounding the exquisite metalwork skills and craftsmanship of the early Irish through the ages, all set in a beautiful museum building, was just an amazing way to spend a few hours in Dublin. So glad I went and it's free!

We were so impressed that we got to enjoy all the marvellous installations and exhibitions for free! The building itself is a piece of art, and the exhibitions were amazing! It took us almost two hours to have a quick tour, but I’d be happy to stay for more. The kids loved it too!!

I love mid-sized, well planned and created museums, this is one! You can travel through time in Irish history, with great details of the everyday life of Irish people from the beginning of times up until the medieval era. Spend some hours here, it is an amazing experience and also free :).

This was a good experience even though the main entrance was under renovation. Several time periods are portrayed, there's even an exhibition on ancient Egypt. But the best *by far* was the bogmen... I have never seen anything like that, however viewer discretion is strongly advised...

Absolutely amazing museum and the perfect place to shelter for a few hours from the rain. There are various exhibitions from across Ireland's historic time line. The Bog Men are both weird and fascinating at the same time. Loved the Viking section too. This is one of Dublin's free museums but leave a donation!

It's one of the best archaeology museums around, and it's free to enter. The array of items on display was amazing. However, it was the remains of the people found in a peat bog that was fascinating. Well worth visiting.

This is a great museum and it's free! Highly recommend having a walk through. Coming from the States, it was very interesting. US history often "starts" around 1620, and it's easy to forget that some of our ancestors crossed the Atlantic. As someone of northern european descent, it was very interesting and enlightening to see the exhibits on stone age tools and culture.

This is an archaeological museum located in Dublin. Few km from the central bus station. The museum is free of entry and displays items from stone age till the Irish independence. These are fun for the kids to learn about several thousand years of history. Roughly takes an hour to browse through the items on display.

Everyone just has to visit the museum at least once in their lives. If you like museums and you like archaeology, then this is an absolute must! The museum is a Victorian building, I think from the 1890’s. Situated in Kildare Street in Dublin 2. The bog bodies are amazing to see, if not a little strange to see in real life. Only ever seen them on the tv. The historical artefacts at the museum range from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages. Some amazing things from Celtic Ireland to Viking Ireland. So much to look at and learn and great for kids to have a wonder and learn as they go. Everything you need to learn about Irish history! Everything from axe heads, Bronze Age gold artefacts, to the Tara brooch are on display, I believe permanently. Cafe available inside for snacks and hot drinks. Really easy to get to and easy to get around. It’s a must! An absolute must!

Obviously things have been rearranged for ideal flow during covid, so the experience is somewhat changed. I think they did a great job all things considered. The prehistoric displays were fascinating and I appreciated that the bog bodies were easy to access but hidden from direct view. I'm not squeamish but they are very dramatic to see and I think that the display is well done. I would love more detail on the Orgham writing, as I had trouble discerning the marks on the rock and would love to know more about how the writing works and how it was identified/decoded. The building itself is beautiful and the staff are friendly and unobtrusive. Absolutely visit. Admission is free but you MUST register for an appt online. You can't just show up. It won't work. Not even if you cry and try to come back in a series of disguises.

The museum was pretty good. I learned a lot about Irish history through the many ages, which was my goal. It was a little dry at times with a few highlights - the gold collection and the bog men. The medieval sections was closed.

At the moment the museum is under renovation, so some of it is closed. The remaining portion is not large, but there's many interesting and beautiful things to see. My favourite piece was a dress upstairs that had been pulled out of a bog, and I also loved the giant canoe. Really enjoyed the bog bodies exhibit which was presented thoughtfully and respectfully. There were some artefacts I'd never seen before, like gold and silver wirework and intricate manuscript boxes. Museum could do better in terms of accessibility- for example adding subtitles to any film exhibit as old footage can have poor audio quality, visitors may have English as a second language or be hard of hearing.

Clean, neat, and items worth viewing - from clay pots 750 bC, to historical leather books with Psalms , to golden jewellery to known crosses. And all of this is neatly presented, and for free. Do note that the museum closes punctually at 17:00. Staff greets friendly at the entrance, fluent English and positive body language. To read and view and google some questions and learn a bit more about certain objects, kings, crosses, customs, I recon allocate about 3 hours to not feel rushed.

Now I may be a wee bit biased, I am a trainee archaeologist. But Jesus isn't this place awesome, and unlike the British museum the place is (mostly) full of our own stuff. It's great to see so many artefacts open to the public. But definitely grab a drink/ snack beforehand because there's not any places to get drinks

Indo-Canadian visiting from Toronto. Dublin’s museums are seriously impressive. Especially considering they are free to the public. This one is no exception. The prehistoric bog/peat bodies were the highlight for me though I’ll skip adding the photographs as they’re a bit disturbing owing to how well they’re preserved (which is also why they’re so interesting). The Irish gold exhibits on the ground floor, Catholic artifacts on the same floor and Egyptian section on the upper floor were other highlights for me. Bonus - an authentic Sheela-na-Gig can be found on the upper floor if you go looking for it. Highly recommend visiting - something for everyone and you’re likely to see something unusual you won’t find in other museums.

Fantastic museum with an interesting and fairly diverse collection. There were several very interesting and unique artifacts in their collection such as the Shrine of the Miosach and a bunch of viking artifacts. The building the museum is in is also very interesting and provides a great atmosphere to view the collection in. The room layout was fairly good, however there were a couple of side rooms that ended up being very cramped or had hard to navigate layouts.

Visited on a Monday afternoon, and there was quite a line forming before their opening. But the museum is quite spacious, so it didn't feel crowded at all. Saw the bog bodies and found it to be incredibly interesting - and a little freaky! There were also children visiting the exhibits. It was free entry and quite a lot to peruse. Would recommend for a nice activity in Dublin.

The National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology in Dublin is a treasure trove for history buffs. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by ornate gold artifacts that showcase Ireland's rich past. The museum is well-organized, taking you on a journey from prehistoric times to medieval Ireland. The museum is spacious, allowing you to explore without feeling rushed. While it's rich in content, it's not overwhelming, making it accessible for all ages. A must-visit if you're keen on digging deep into Ireland's history! And there is even free entrence!

Really well laid out, starting you off with the very earliest excavations, with quite a linear route through to 1800s religion, warfare and living. There were guided tours, school trips and friendly, helpful security. No flash photography allowed understandably but regular photos seemed fine. Beautiful mosaic floors throughout. Gift shop was full of tasteful souvenirs and lovely gift cards and post cards.

I loved how it was totally free and had a pretty extensive and well organized early history of Ireland—always love to have context when I’m in a new place. The building is also beautiful and the workers are super kind. However, I have the same gripe I did with the British Museum: lack of accountability in the exhibit texts for the colonial practices that led to their possession of Cypriot and Egyptian artifacts. At this point, the museum narrative should take accountability.

Beautiful building. No admission fee, just a donation option of €5. Loads of artefacts and history to enjoy. Beautiful pieces from hundreds of thousands of years ago. The good section is so impressive. The only improvement would in how the information is presented. It would be great to have more story telling. It could also be more interactive. They display everything beautifully. It's steeped in history which could be shared more. It's beside government buildings so a walk before/after is great. Parking at Dawson Street QPark is the handiest. Loads of bars/restaurants to choose from in this area.

Great place to learn about Irish history. Has many interesting exhibits ranging from the stone age, all the way to the medieval times. All items are very well preserved with appropriate labels which indicate the name and place of origin. One of the highlights of this museum are the bog men, which are very well preserved. Probably my favourite museum in Ireland. There is an absolutely wild amount of gold in this museum found from a variety of different hordes across Ireland over the years. They also have a wide array of artifacts from different parts of the county and different eras ranging from further back to the Stone Age. There is a lovely little cafe inside as well, it is a little expensive but admission to the museum is free so I suppose it isn’t too much to ask. The staff are super friendly and always willing to help and they also have visiting exhibits which change over sometimes. Admission is, as I said, free, like many public museums in Ireland, so leave a donation if you can!

A fine museum. It's free, which is always a bonus and there are definitely some things worth seeing here. The bog people are a must-see, as their preserved bodies are quite impressive. The viking and Egyptian displays also have some good stuff, but this isn't the most elaborate museum to learn about these cultures. Don't get me wrong, it's still worth a visit, but if you're a frequent visitor of museums, this might not be the best choice for you. You could also just go see the bog people and leave again. The choice is up to you.

I visited the museum several times. It is a must for those interested in the prehistory and history of Ireland. You will find treasures such as golden torcs from the Bronze Age, a triplified stone head from Corleck, County Cavan, and even perfectly preserved bog bodies, that were probably ritually killed and sacrificed. The museum staff were friendly and helpful, and the visit felt really safe in the midst of a pandemic: the regulations to ensure physical distancing were crystal clear. Highly recommended.

There is so much to see in this museum, but the signs aren't very descriptive so sometimes you need to do extra research to learn about things.

Interesting museum, has a lot of archaeological pieces from all over Ireland. With covid restrictions is necessary to book the visit but it’s still free and plus, is very quiet! It’s not too big, the visit lasts around one hour. Advised if interested to history.

We love this place! Unfortunately due to covid-19 precautions more than half of the expositions are closed, quite disappointing.

Go to the first floor and find yourself in the vikings world. The skulls , the skeletons and village plans are my favourite

Houses some of the most important Irish artefacts in an iconic building in the heart of the capital. There's no charge for your visit and you're also free to browse through a number of extra exhibitions on such subjects as the Battle of Clontarf and the monastic centre at Glendalough. Mandatory for anyone who wants to know more about Early and medieval Ireland, its Celtic roots and culture.

The best place to step back into Ireland's rich history by coming face to face with some of the most beautiful artefacts the country has to offer.

Loved it different variety of history to see here wasn't too busy, friendly staff too

  • 5/5 Fil I. 2 years ago on Google
The gentleman at the desk was very kind and welcoming and let us in on a busy Sunday. Be ready to be stunned, amazed and shocked. Piles of golden jewellery, shrivelled mummies with gripping stories, this museum has it all. I must say, the architecture of the building was the most beautiful aspect of the whole experience. Be sure to go on Sunday, outside busy hours, it's free and definitely worth learning about Irish history.

Nice place to kill an hour, away from the hustle and bustle of Dublin streets. The bog bodies is a fantastic exhibit, the museum also houses national treasures such as the exquisitely detailed ardagh chalice and Tara brooch.

Great museum. Lots of exhibits l. Shame medieval period was closed but otherwise easy to get in and well laid out. Must book for free in advance

I do recommend to visit this place... Free It has really unique pieces of art and one of my favorite ones was The bodies of Bog. You have to see it to believe it..

  • 4/5 Cezar B. 2 years ago on Google
Satisfactory.. .. not a huge variety on display, but you will learn about bogs. Very small ancient Egypt section. Still worth visiting to learn about Irish ancestors and heritage.

I learned so much about Ireland's history here. I love biking history and I did not realize how much impact they had on Ireland

Bog body exhibit (what I came in for) was really interesting! Taking away a star for the way it was constructed - the information plaques are in the middle of the hallways which creates major congestion. These could easily be moved inside the pods with only a name and maybe a very short blurb on the outside so that people would still know what was within but didn't clog the hallways. Also minus one star for complacency in general British museum thievery nonsense

Interesting Museum located in Dublin City. They have a large collection of animals, birds, insects etc.. that are all nicely preserved. The entrance is free. Takes a while to look at all the exhibits.

  • 1/5 Eken 9 months ago on Google
Free entrance is the only plus. An old museum with an old concept. I guess it is better with a guide and tried to find info for that on the web byt no info there... also a movie shown that didn't fit the sceeen... shape up it is your national history be proud and show it.

Seeing how worn the steps were...we were walking where thousands had walked before. So much information to take in. This place took over an hour, closer to two. It really does a great job depicting various eras of Ireland's history, which I knew very little of until I visited. Many lovely artifacts and works of art from long ago are preserved for all to see. It really ties everything together that you've learned about Ireland and its rich history.

Quite an amazing building, worth coming to just to see the style of design that was around at the time! Interesting range of exhibits if you like history from quite a while ago. Well worth a look!

  • 5/5 JULIANA A. 6 months ago on Google
I would definitely recommend a visit here while you're in Dublin. Beautiful building. No admission fee, just a donation option of €5. Loads of artefacts and history to enjoy. Beautiful pieces from hundreds of thousands of years ago. You'll take about 2 hours I'd say.
