Amateur hour - come here if you want to be served by a bunch of chumps who don’t understand the concept of legal tender. One star for the tasty buffalo wings. But beware as you can’t pay for the wings with cash or card depending on how low the staff’s IQ is trending Response to Ann-Marie: I didn’t understand how this pub was so highly rated on Google maps. But if you doctor honest reviews … the rating stacks up. Cheers

Typical London pub. Very lively and rather expensive but that's competing it to Dorset prices. Probably not out of line for London. Conveniently located near Herne Hill Station. Can't comment on the food as I didn't have any. The local bear was nice.

Staff was adorable but the room was very noisy (we heard the police all night long) and it was a bit far from the centre of london. Maybe we were just unlucky, if you happen to go there avoid the Cernan room at least.

I've lived in the area for 35 years and I've never been in here until yesterday. Positive: wow what a great venue great space for private party and still be part of the pub atmosphere if you want to. The drink prices was reasonable and the staff was extremely friendly very attentive dog friendly. One staff Patrick went out of his way and was very helpful. This is a gem for small intimate parties a night out great location Negative: the food was okay the chips very dry. Need to step up a notch more with the food

This is such a diamond in the rough. Not at all expected from the outside. There’s the regular pub out front, but if you keep walking in, there’s a whole cool restaurant at the back. The vibe is pretty cool with exposed pipes etc, and the music is real chill. Low enough to hold a decent conversation without screaming. Their service was spot on; smiles all round and very efficient. I ordered the roast, as it was Sunday when I visited, and it was spot on! Generous portion and came with all the trimmings, and for a reasonable price as well. The dessert was less than desirable though; nothing to write home about.

We stayed for 2 nights recently. Due to ill health the stairs were very difficult for me. We spoke to the receptionist who was so helpful and she transferred us to a room on the lower level which was absolutely fabulous. All the staff couldn't have been more helpful and we think they went over and above to help us out. The breakfast was really good and we had a lovely lady to serve us. We would definately return to this hotel on our return to London.

Booked this place for a night out at a gig in Brixton. The room was stunning, & decorated beautifully, the added complementary treats were a real bonus too. The bed was very comfortable & despite the noise outside (can't be helped!), we slept very well. I booked bed & breakfast, but didn't realise what breakfast entailed at The Half Moon. I expected a standard buffet, but we were presented with a menu that had fantastic choices along with tea, coffee & juices. All were included in the price. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay & if we're in the area again, we shall definitely return!

Beautiful building. Great location. Room was very nice if a little small (Bean). They were very stressy at the bars closing time though, which they started cleaning around us at only 10:30.

Very nice pub that has been lovingly renovated to preserve a lot of its traditional feel. The food is good, especially recommend the roast dinner. There is a good sized beer garden for the warm weather, which has a log burner for the colder months. There is a snug as well as a main bar. Good selection of beers and wines and generally a very good atmosphere.

We stayed at the hotel whilst visiting London and are so happy we chose to stay here. Rooms are beautiful with v comfy bed and nice shower. We had our evening meal in the garden and breakfast in the restaurant both were really good. We took our 2 yr old boy and he loved it too! Staff are also really helpful, thanks to Ann Marie who helped us when we had to amend our booking. Will definitely be back!

Pub has been nicely restored but it was £7.25 a pint (!) so not a price I’m willing to tolerate. The food was seriously overpriced relative to quality/portion, and there are just so few actual tables for what is a huge space. Herne Hill not short of good better priced venues so will be visiting them in future.

My review is of the hotel, and The Half Moon as accommodation for a wedding party. I hope I can help a couple avoid the stress, confusion, and unprofessionalism of this place. A comment I'm shocked I haven't seen about the hotel rooms is that they seem to not have double-gazed windows, or if they do, there is no sound absorption. I stayed in the Grand Suite and couldn't believe how loud the street noise was. Traffic and bin lorries full of crashing glass sounds were shockingly loud. It was commented on by my family as well as the hair and makeup artists that helped me prepare in my room. That aside, I reserved several hotel rooms for our family and ourselves, with different check-in and check-out dates. The check-in process was a huge mess - my cousin arrived first and they gave him the room that was for my sister and mother. After we corrected that, the front desk gave my sister a hard time because they didn't seem to have her correct check-out date. The night before my wedding, I received an upsetting call from the front desk claiming that no one had checked in for one of the rooms I had reserved. I explained that they would be arriving the next morning. And to top it off, there was a huge confusion ON THE MORNING of my wedding as my brother and sister in law arrived to the hotel and the staff told them they did not have a reservation, which they did. It has been almost 1 year since these events and our experience at this hotel is a sour memory from our wedding, something that should have never happened. This hotel is incapable of handling wedding accomocations, be warned. Edit: Hi Anne-Marie, I left a lot of other negative details out of my review for the sake of it's length. It's sad you have to lie about our dog, who was a happy guest at our wedding reception. There are many other reviews commenting poorly on the experience at your establishment and unprofessionalism of your staff.

Went there for sunday roast. Food quality can be improved. Portions too. My main course was absolutely tiny in terms of quantity, and lacked in terms of flavour too. A disappointment on all fronts. Staff however were friendly although not particularly attentive. We had to wait ages for our meals to be delivered and had to remind the waitress about the order.

The staff was outstanding! Very friendly upon arrival and during our entire stay. Any request we had was answered and they performed above expectations. The rooms were very nice, with great amenities and very uniquely decorated. The pub had great food and we spent a night with friends there for dinner and beers. Loved the location away from crowded Central London, and it was a short train ride to any of the main attractions. Would recommend to any seasoned traveller looking for an authentic experience. Some street noise during the day but very quiet at night.

Half Moon Pub in Herne Hill - restaurant Lovely place, great food, terrible staff behaviour I have been before and had a great experience so I hope this was a one off but it was very bad as I recommended it to a friend to have a meal and catch-up and in the past staff have been lovely. This was not the case when I visited on Friday night 15.09.23. We mad a comment about how we preferred that the service charge was not on the the bill automatically and it would have been nice to add it ourselves, well the response was astounding! we got a lecture from a girl (waitress) that we were speaking offensively in front of her, when we only made a comment and how she is on the minimum wage and we owe her the service charge and how dare we question it. She provided no special service other than to take our order, bring our wine/starter and main which in my mind is her job there was no interaction the service charge should be for exceptional service above and beyond (I should know as I have worked in the hospitality industry for 20 + years). The lecture she gave us was full of entitlement and totally out or order - can someone please give her some training in customer service but I suspect she is totally in the wrong industry - this incident completely ruin a evening of catching up with a friend and was totally out of order and very unpleasant.

Went to a friends birthday drinks here - in one of their private function rooms. Great pub, very London typical with the huge ceilings. Definitely recomend it as a party venue.

Just popped in for a quick pint. Lady behind the bar was lovely and the Guinness and London Pride were excellent. Big pub with loads of space- also has a restaurant to the side which seems to be shared with the people staying in the rooms available, but looks quite nice. Just a quick note: it looks like every table in the pub has a couple of three pin plug sockets as well as a USB charging point.

Lovely place, lovely food, terrible staff behaviour - one off though, I’ve interacted with most lovely staff there on other occasions. Last night upon bill arrival we made a comment about how we preferred that service charge was not on a bill automatically and it would have been nice to add it ourselves, and we got a lecture from a girl half or more our age about how dare we speak offensively in front of her and how she is on minimum wage and thus we owe her service charge and how dare we question it??? She has provided no service other than taking the order, bringing the food and clearing plates, no interaction while doing it and no clue about how to approach guests, but at least she gave us her full of entitlement speech as part of her “service”. Someone please help her and customer train her, maybe she can go off and purse better paid job. Little do young people know, everyone, especially that age was at minimum wage at some point 😉

Brilliant drinks, great service and amazing garden area. The portions sizes are good for the price and its a perfect place to head to in both good weather and wet weather. They always have a good selection of beers and ales on draught and most importantly pour a great guinness. Thanks guys

We loved everything about our stay at the Half Moon and will definitely be back. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming and we felt very well taken care of. The room was stunning and we slept extremely comfortably. The bathrobes and the coffee/station were a big plus. Breakfast was delicious. There’s a Supermarkt around the corner if you need some small items. Several buses depart close by but you can also walk to Brixton station. On your way there you will find several nice cafes and restaurants. The park close to the Half Moon has an amazing adventure playground which my daughter loved.

Had been to the pub plenty of times but this was the first time staying overnight and it couldn't have been better. All the staff are brilliant and the rooms are gorgeous - would definitely recommend anyone looking to stay in the area.

Lovely hotel with a pub and bistro below. The room was comfortable and the bathroom a good functional size. The staff is friendly and the food delicious. We chose the Half Moon for its proximity to Brixton. We’d stay here again in the summer to enjoy the outdoor dining area.

Had a lovely 2 nights stay here. All of the staff were really friendly and helpful. Made us feel really welcome. The breakfast was awesome and set us up for the day. We will definitely stay here again.

We went here for an impromptu birthday lunch (10 of us and 2 dogs!). We were lucky to get a great table in the garden. The staff were super busy but were really helpful and efficient, food was great and served quite quickly. Would highly recommend!

We came in for a meal just after Christmas. The food was incredible, the pub is beautiful and very comfortable and the staff were amazing...all except one. A female member of staff came over just before closing and was quite aggressive, asking us to leave. Quite alright asking us to leave, it WAS closing time but she was really angry. We calmly collected our stuff together and as we passed her, thanked her for a great meal and being open at such a difficult time. She rudely interrupted us and barked at us angrily. Vicious, ignorant and downright nasty. I didn't get her name but apart from her aggression, her only distinguishing feature was her non - British accent. Kind of ruined our experience. The polite young chap behind the bar witnessed it and gave us a 'sorry' expression as we thanked him.

The food and service are fantastic. Brilliant if you have some none vegans in the group. You'd never know the camambert bites weren't really cheese. Only loses a star on price. Just a bit too expensive compared to comparable venues

First came here 45 years ago and visited last night for a drink and a meal with a friend who lives locally. Must be one of the best preserved Victorian pub interiors and that alone makes it worth a visit. Very well kept beer and variety of guest ales. Food good, but, I thought, a little expensive. Large dining room, good space between tables but very noisy once service was well under way. Nice to get a couple of Taliskers to round things off. Had to struggle to find someone to pay for these as we bought them after main bill paid. Bar and waiting staff friendly, busy and efficient. This pub is an institution and deservedly popular.

Had Sunday Dinner here today and it was absolutely delicious. The meal size was massive and selection and quality of the food was great, and the price was honestly the best I've ever seen. Loved the Chicken and the Yorkshire puddings were the size of my head. Value for money 100% had more to eat and drink than we could have asked for , will be visiting every weekend

Great room in the bar for buggies so you can lunch with other parents. Good lunch menu deals but have found portions small/expensive in the past (ie half an aubergine for 11 quid)

Absolutely amazing experience here. Stayed in a petite room, but it's more than big enough. Few signs of wear and tear but nothing drastic. Mini fridge with bottled water and beer on the house. Couldn't hear a thing from the pub downstairs and wouldn't have even known it was open until 0030. Bed was so comfy, best night sleep in a long while. Staff were lovely and breakfast was amazing. Can't wait to return for future trips, won't be staying anywhere else in London now we know this place exists.

There are very many positive things about our recent stay - the staff were really delightful, the food was very good ( particularly the breakfast) and when we arrived they upgraded us as I was disappointed in the size of the classic double room (as I thought for what I'd paid we'd get a larger one). The second room was much larger and lovely with lots of nice touches, such as decent coffee, chocs, bath gown/ slippers etc The downside was the room overlooked the front of the hotel and we literally didn't sleep more than a few minutes at a time. There were police sirens going off all night ( I guess as it's close to a junction) and it seemed like every few minutes we'd be startled out of our sleep, it's also close to a train station and the trains were rumbling past very loudly! In hindsight we wished we'd stayed in the smaller room that was in a quieter part of the hotel ( but we had no idea what was in store for us) Admittedly we live in the country where it is very quiet and we're light sleepers but for us it was a really miserable experience. I'm giving 4 star because you can't help the police sirens but I wouldn't have booked if I'd known how noisy it was going to be in that room!!

Stayed in a petite double room for two nights. This property was very luxurious for such a reasonable price. It’s in such a lovely part of London. There’s a lovely market on Sundays just outside. It’s only a short train journey into the city centre. Breakfast was included in the price and it was spectacular. Great amenities, the shower was amazing. The dressing gowns, slippers, and free waters were great touches. 10/10, I couldn’t recommend this place enough.

Everything about our stay was fantastic. Beautiful rooms, amazing service, exceeded our expectations. Most comfy hotel bed ever slept in. The little touches really made our stay (complementary beer in fridge.l, teas and coffees, chocolates, toiletries). Thank you 😊

My Wife and I stayed at the Half Moon in Herne Hill for 2 nights, I selected this as our base due to the transport links and reviews. The half moon, was outstanding, great staff (so friendly and welcoming) great food and an amazing stay in the Irwin room, the room was fabulous and cannot be beaten, absolutely first class from the room to all the staff, thank you so much. If you are thinking of staying, you must do it you will not be disappointed

Food was very tasty. The outside seating is a little old. Service was slow and no waited the tables outside. They served me wrong dish but then removed it from the bill even when I had eaten it which was really unexpected and nice. I was just stating that they served me wrong dish but it was tasty anyways. But they offered to remove it, which was great. Again food was worth it. And all dishes were tasty. Which we ordered.

Currently staying here, lovely old fashioned bar area down stairs which goes through to a really rustic restaurant area and outdoor space. Great atmosphere. The room we're in is also very smart and clean and the staff are brilliant. Would recommend as a good place to stay to commute in and out of London (just 10 mins) for all the standard tourist attractions 👍

The place was faultless, the pub had such a good atmosphere, felt like a proper London pub! Everyone was very friendly, to the girl that was on the desk on Sunday 7th of August, she was amazing, so helpful! She doesn't get payed enough 😂 perfect stay will be coming back!

  • 5/5 Christina G. 1 year ago on Google
This was an incredible hotel to stay at! Everyone we interacted with was super friendly and helpful, the room was quaint but had a unique vibe to it which was really cool, and hands down the best breakfast I have ever had at a hotel. To top it off, having the pub downstairs gives the entire place a really good atmosphere! Close walk to the tram station which is only a short ride away from Victoria station (aka the gateway into all of central London). If we're ever in London again this will 100% be the place we stay at!

We live locally so we've been to the Half Moon a handful of times for meals which have always been lovely, but the service we received when we decided to have our wedding reception at the Half Moon was truly above and beyond. Tucked in the back was a perfect private space for our small reception. Ann-Marie truly could not have been more helpful in coordinating our day. On top of that she helped sort out the accommodations for our families in the hotel which helped ease our stress. The day of the reception was perfect - the room was the perfect space for an event, the food was amazing, and the entire staff were so lovely and attentive. I cannot recommend them enough. We will forever be grateful for the role the Half Moon played in our special day.

We had an overnight stay here. The location was easy to find (4 stops from Farringdon Station / Sutton Train) Friendly staff and the bedroom was lovely. It's over a popular pub which serves a selection of spirits and fresh food. Our accommodation also included a complimentary breakfast which was delicious.
