Our family were lucky to enjoy a wonderful experience at this lovely venue. We arrived to a warm welcome and were instantly inspired by the decor. We were seated upstairs for a large group, by the large window, overlooking the street at a big table. We were treated by a lovely chap, called Dan. He was very friendly, sociable, honest and professional. (All the family commented about his service for days after). All kinds of meals and drinks were selected. But, I particularly chose the Chicken Burger with pulled pork and coleslaw. I would normally choose a standard beef burger. But, I was sold by looking at the menu.... 😁👍 This met all expectations and more! I would like to personally thank Dan and the team for a great experience. We understood there was a rather large party of guests also there. But, with no hesitation we were all looked after and in a professional manner. We look forward to visiting again. Next time to try a Roast Dinner. Thank you 'The Walrus' 👌😁🤌

We went for Sunday roast last week and we ate excellent. I liked a lot the place's decoration, wooden environment, and the atmosphere of the restaurant, which is incredibly big, you cannot wonder it is like that from outside. I lived in Ship street for 4 years and was really nice to come back and visit this place. I got the pork option and was really taste and crunchy. Not to be missed. Special mention to the young guy who was attending us upstairs, very polite, smiley, friendly and kind. Also the worker girls and the host man who got us the table for 6 with no booking in advance. Thanks a lot!

Very good (and huge) vegan roast, just needs a vegan Yorkshire pudding. Lovely setting & helpful staff

Came here for a Sunday lunch, just walked in around 3pm and they had space for 4 of us. Those who eat meat said it was one of the best Sunday lunches they've had, I had the fish and while it was really tasty I would have liked to have seen a good veggie option on the menu that wasn't full of mushrooms (just personal preference). Service was good, friendly and reliable without being overbearing. I would very much recommend popping by!

Had booked a table in advance for a family gathering. Friendly welcome from a member of staff who advised our table was upstairs. Found our table situated next to the window that was nice however the table was incredibly sticky and needed a good clean. Each place had a small glass for water but unfortunately a lot of the glasses were dirty. Food arrived within 20 minutes or ordering but disappointed by the size of the plates (small for a roast) and small portions. One of the group finished his roast in 5 minutes. Everyone agreed that the roast potatoes were cold. The desserts were all fairly small as well and had clearly been bought in advance (not home made) The general cleanliness was poor with thick dust on top of the speakers, cobwebs visible and the light fixtures were grubby. As for the atmosphere well that was difficult to rate as we were the second table to arrive so it was very quiet, shame there was no background music. One guest ordered a tea that arrived with a dirty cup and no milk provided, had to ask for a clean cup and milk. Had this have been a cheap roast you wouldn’t mind so much but at £18 each it was not value for money.

Amazing food and huge portions! Polite, friendly, and efficient service too. The place has loads of seating areas over many floors... Its quite a maze! There's even a lovely partially covered roof garden / smoking area. I highly recommend the roast (I had the roast lamb.)

Wandering around the Lanes looking for a spot to finish the day and came upon the Walrus. Not knowing anything about the place, we took a chance and got a table. Place is bigger on the inside for sure. We arrived at 5pm on a Saturday and we’re surprised to find that we could only get a table if we could be finished by 7. No problem we said and we’re seated on one of many floors. The food was amazing. Roasted Sea Bream, Camembert with roasted sourdough, a decent steak and fantastic sticky pudding and crumble. We left a little lighter in the wallet but genuinely impressed with the service and the quality of the meal. 6 nights into this trip and this meal has been the best to date, including the London leg. Well done.

Nice big pub with a good selection of beers. Lots of different choices for seating, including an upstairs terrace where you can basically smoke inside. I think they have a venue room too with comedy nights, but I haven't personally been. Overall a great place with a great vibe!

Big Beautiful space. Good for both drinks and food! The portions were huge and has also great vegan options. We tried the fish and chips that comes with tartare and mushy peas and the pasta with vegan meatballs. If you like calamari I highly recommend the starter.

Quick service and incredible espresso martinis! We didn't eat but the drinks were good. It feels like a proper old pub inside which was quite refreshing!

The best roast dinner I’ve had in a long time! Friendly and welcoming service, even though there was two separate events going on and it was a very busy Sunday the front of house lady (didn’t catch her name) was very accommodating and found us a table. After receiving some unpleasant service from a place five minutes away we had our faith restored in Brighton. Will definitely be back when we visit again.

Hands down one of the best Sunday Roasts in Brighton! Great service and fabulous interiors. Would definitely come back again! ✨

This was by far the best Sunday roast in a pub I have ever had the roast lamb was amazing !! The waitress who covered the tables in the bar area on Sunday was so friendly and helpful and made sure everything was perfect. I would say if you are looking for a good roast in Brighton this is the place to go. Everything had so much flavour and had the option of adding extras like pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese! Honestly so good !!!

Incredible pub/venue in Brighton. Open roof smoking area. Loads of rooms and tables throughout. Dance floor in the basement - great place for a free boogie. Haven't eaten here so can't tell you about the food offering.

Good quality pub with both the environment and the food to a high standard. Went a couple of times (staying at Hotel du Vin next door) - and both times (chicken and steak) the food a well portioned and fresh quality. Nice feel inside (didn’t make it to the rooftop) - and staff were young and friendly. Would recommend.

The Walrus did a fantastic job of hosting our wedding yesterday. We had a brilliant time and all the staff were amazing. The food and drink choice and quality was excellent, and the private dining room was a perfect space for around 30 guests. Thank you to the amazing team who made our big day super special. Really nice pub & restaurant, and one of those higgledy-piggledy warren-type pubs with different bars, quiet corners, snugs, and cosy nooks & crannies. Their sunday roast beef lunch is to die for (and tastes just as good in the evening!). I will return! :)

Had our wedding reception in the basement area of the Walrus pub. I can't thank the stuff enough for the service we received throughout the evening and during the planning process! It was easy to hire the space the staff were incredible with handling our requests and what not. The day itself ran smoothly, my guests and I had an amazing time and the buffet food was great! Highly recommended the walrus for your events! The staff seemed to go that extra mile to make your day go from great to excellent.

Brilliant vegan Sunday roast with live jazz music & lush decor. This was the first result on Google when searching for a vegan roast & I’m sure I don’t need to visit anywhere else to know it must be one of Brighton’s top. The interior design is beautiful throughout. Certainly a place you’d want to come back to. I was surprised with how nice everything was how reasonably priced the roast was (£14.50). We were led downstairs for Sunday lunch where there was an excellent live jazz duo. Food was excellent all round, with options for non-roast lunches as well. Staff were helpful & friendly. Speed of everything was good. If I had any complaints it’d be that the Yorkshire pudding isn’t subbed with anything for the vegan roast, just omitted. But it was still a full plate. IIRC the lentils in the Wellington also weren’t mentioned but only a small issue there. Would certainly be back & recommend to others.

Beautiful Pub. Was so surprised as to how big it is inside! Some great spaces to entertain with friends in and the theatre space downstairs is totally awesome. Had a very nice Sunday roast, with live Jazz too.

Really wonderful & welcoming service. We managed to get the last table & they custom made our cocktails for us, which were great. We had a quick nibble of olives & bread with a great flavour butter that I will definitely be stealing the recipe for! For a quick pre-dinner or cocktails with friends / date, I definitely recommend.

Absolutely amazing end to our weekend trip! The roast on Sundays is the best! So much food, great quality and good prices. My friend's all got meat and raved about them. I got the veggie (always skeptical of a veggie roast) and it was absolutely amazing! The pastry for the Wellington was delicious. I never thought my favourite thing about a roast would be cabbage but it was the highlight for me! Definitely recommend, may be hidden away in Brighton but so worth going.

Lovely roast. It was so big I had to ask for a doggy bag. My Beagle was so happy 🐕

Pretty upstairs dining room, friendly service, decent pub food. I had the tomato and burrata salad as well as chips, both of which were very nice. Others’ food (roasts) were apparently also very nice, and there was so much food that one of us took leftovers home. Good hot chocolate as well.

Popped in to use facilities and have a quick drink. Love it! Old fashioned, old pub/restaurant, bit dark initially with lots of dark wood panelling but large. Sat by front window, had coffee, basic gin and tonic with angustura bitters, Thatchers cider, no food today. Its a proper pub, no cocktails to speak of on menu. Currently still table service. Lovely low level background music, very nice helpful young staff. Family friendly from what I could see. There is an upstairs restaurant and a roof terrace. Level wide access from the street. Disabled toilet is discreetly labelled which I liked cos it doesn't get abused by people who can't be bothered to find the normal loos. They are up a few steps, round a corner then apparently it is a bit of a 'rabbit warren' :-) Liked it!

Sadly very disappointed this time . We have frequented the walrus a fair number of times being local , and really fancied a guaranteed great Sunday roast as we have experienced in the past here , but most certainly not on this occasion, where do I start , The plate consisted mainly of roast potatoes that were too hard to eat , of the two veg that were there , the broccoli had no heads on them only the spears that again were rock hard , impossible to eat , and the carrots were sodden with an overherby taste , as all of the meal was , the pork belly , the meat of it was lovely but the crackling was limp skin and it should be crisp, and had took on the herbs taste from the gravy? We went in hungry and came out hungry .

We booked to eat after the Brighton Half Marathon so it was pretty busy, however the staff were all really friendly and helpful. The food was delicious! We had roast dinners - lamb shank, beef, chicken - all of which were generous portions and very tasty. It's a really nice looking restaurant with plenty of ambiance...only minor criticism was the chairs weren't overly comfortable...but that's me being picky! Would thoroughly recommend the Walrus to anyone looking for a great meal.

Fantastic place, very friendly and helpful staff. Gluten-free meal was awesome. Really looked after my coeliac child (and the rest of us). Came recommended and definitely didn't disappoint. Next time we're in Brighton we will be back 👍

Such a busy, throbbing hive of a place. So much more than just a pub. I need to register on to their website to find out what's going on! I want to return! The pub, the private hire venue, the roof garden, the burlesque dancers, the nightclub and the food! Been here once before for a Sunday roast which was great but tonight has added to that. And what a warm welcome. Chatted with the manager as he cleaned the table we were about to sit at. Very nice, informative and a gentleman. And so very kindly gave us a complimentary bottle of wine! Interested please and service

This is a brilliant find. Brighton has many good pubs and restaurants but this one punches above most when it comes to roast lunch. The selection is great and the portions are amazing....with plenty of gravy too! The service is very friendly and efficient....if you like a Sunday roast you need to give this place a try, and I would advise booking a table in the restaurant area.

Nothing to complain. Food and services are excellent. There was a live band which was out of my expectation. Had a wonderful time here and definitely will go again!

My local pub in Brighton and I’m very glad for that fact! Old English pubs like this absolutely need to be saved and preserved for future generations. I stopped in here with my partner for Sunday roast and we not disappointed! The staff were all lovely and friendly, the menu was well put together, and the food arrived quickly and tasted delicious. The roast lamb fell off the bone and the potatoes were crispy and fluffy at the same time. The whole plate was great! Love the way the place is styled. It feels cosy and warm. Ornaments and bric-à-brac up on the walls. Plants placed around for homeliness and dark wood everywhere. One thing I’d love to see (as we were both doing dry July) is more non-alcoholic options.

Great food, well priced yet almost insanely generous portions. Salt and pepper squid were spot on, as was the modern take on paella with fresh fish and seafood laid on the paella base. Vegan 'meatball' tagliatelle really tasty and humongous portion. Good beer, friendly relaxed service, lovely old pub setting.

This place totally deserves a 5-star review from me! Their Sunday roast is superb. I’ve had their slow lamb roast which was falling off the bone and succulent. The side pink cabbages in wine sauce is exquisite and very flavorful. I enjoyed every bite; highly recommended!

Absolutely brilliant pub! The staff were really put going and chatty! The rooftop terrace(enclosed, guess its more of an attic) is awesome and we even randomly met Craig Charles in there. Worth a visit especially if you're off for some local music etc beforehand!! Pictured below is the top floor.

Absolutely appalled after visiting as it had such a good review. Currently being run by inadequate students, luckily I had my dogs with me so at least they were able to have a nice meal. Some of these plates had been left beside us for 40 minutes. Definitely not worth the money
