Dined here in June. Enjoyed. Reasonable priced food ordered from the set price lunchtime menu and service was great. However, was overcharged on our bill. Please see my previous review. A phone call confirmed this would be reimbursed if we visited again plus we had a voucher offering £10 off if you spent £40 or more so we went back on a Thursday afternoon late July. Unfortunately this visit was in no way comparable to the first. Thought it was very expensive and service very poor. Ordered 2 pints of Estella lager. Gone up 25 pence a pint from our previous visit. Also ordered a bottle of Rioja at £21.75. No problem with that as that’s what you can expect to pay in most places for a bottle of wine. Ordered starter of squid with chilli’s. Mains of burger with side order of onion rings and a mixed grill. The wine arrived already uncorked and with 2 dirty glasses. Previously I would have sent this back. Wine should be uncorked at the table, this was not a screw top bottle. The customer should be allowed to check if it’s not corked. But probably lucky it came this way as the glasses were dirty. I had raised this on my last visit. My view is that the glasses are cleaned but either heat dried or drip dried not wiped clean. This leaves marks. We cleaned them with our napkins. But not a good start. The wine however was excellent. Starter came. Brought by a different server. Reasonable flavour and chillis good and hot but, for the price, £6.50, I though the portion was small. I moved the finished dish to the side where it stayed for the rest of our visit. No attempt made to remove it. Mains came. My brother had specifically asked for a hard yolk on his egg. The egg was soft. He sent it back. I had the burger. I had ordered onion rings which, if ordered with the burger, were £1.50. I asked the waitress about my side order. She explained they were on top of the burger. They consisted on one onion ring and two wanna be rings who hoped to be onion rings when they grew up. I know £1.50 isn’t much but I would rather pay more and get a decent portion. I began to eat mine. The burger was bland. Like the fries I would assume frozen. Certainly not home made. The only flavour came from the bacon and cheese. My brothers mixed grill arrived along with a container with various sauces and condiments in it. Might have been nicer to bring this before the mains were served so both of us could have used it if we had wanted not wait until I had nearly finished. My brother said the sausage and gammon were tasty but the steak was tough. But you don’t normally expect to get the best steak on a mixed grill. Meals finished and plates finally taken away. No one bothering to come over and ask if everything was alright and no dessert menu offered. The place was not busy. It must have been a good ten minutes after before we were asked if we wanted dessert. I think 6 items on the dessert menu but we were immediately told two items were unavailable. We decided not to bother. Went to pay the bill. Luckily we had the discount voucher and some money back from previously being over charged as the final bill without this discount would, in my opinion have been exorbitant. Just a fraction short of £70. Unlike our last visit I am sorry to say this was just not good value for money. And the service, which previously had been friendly and attentive, was anything of the sort this time. I don’t like to give low marks but feel I have no option after this visit. We won’t be returning. My advice if you do go is eat from the fixed price menu and hope you pick a day and time when the staff on duty have better customer service skills. Unfortunately adding this review has deleted my previous review when we visited in June. That's unfortunate as I gave four stars then despite the issue with the bill. The discount for the three course set lunch had not been applied. I have put the pictures on from the first visit showing the three and two course set lunch we had.

We booked a table at 4pm Mother's Day. We were put in our own room together separate from the rest of the pub which was great. There was a limited Mother's menu and my daughter couldn't find anything she liked. They said she could order off the main menu and she got a chicken burger which she really enjoyed. The food was really good especially the roast chicken. There was plenty, we got half a chicken each. The staff were lovely.

Terrible for Christmas day. No welcome drink on arrival which was paid for. Table booked for 13:30 and our starters were being served as we were still in the process of twelve of us sitting down. Main course, when it finally arrived over an hour later was cold and under cooked. One lamb meal looked as though it had cat food served. Dessert was OK but for some having Christmas pudding, should have been served with brandy sauce not custard. Hot toddy filo pastry served with ice cream not hot custard as stated. Had to ask for my grandsons starter, main and his dessert was totally forgotten about. The owners pushed our eat time forward and it was evident that they had done this to cram extra sittings in. Rocky plates on uneven tables. No social distancing, rammed so close together that we had to take it in turns to visit our plates to cut our food up to eat it. We were not served coffee and praline at the end which was paid for. Terrible. Glad to get out.

What a lovely couple of hours in the Sun trenched table overlooking the hills up yonder! Great food, drinks and service. Mark the Host and Manager will make your visit the best experience in the North West friendly and attentive. Will be back some day 🔜 👍

First visit in for a long time. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Came to take our drinks order very quickly. We ordered 2 fish and chips, after another diner recommended then, and a halloumi kebab. The food was very hot, nicely presented and very tasty 😋 I can highly recommend the veggie kebab. It was busting with flavour. ❤️ Generous portions meant we had no room for dessert this time. Just coffee. Will definitely return, and hopefully, that time, try a pud! 🤤

Staff were excellent, happy, smiling , and made a point of interacting with us. Shown to a table, drinks ordered. Good choice of beer and soft drinks. Ordered sirloin steak with pepper sauce and fish and chips.which arrived within a timely manner. Food was hot, nicely presented and fair portions. Good customer service sorting out an issue with steak, and fish was lovely. Fair visit and will be back

The women who served us was so so lovely and made us feel really welcome. Her name was Samantha. The food was really good and hot but it did take a long time, every table that arrived after us got served first which was the only thing that wasn’t great. The food was really yummy and enjoyable, would definitely come again soon!

We were obviously a little concerned about going out into a public venue with the current Omicron variant being so prevalent but on arrival we immediately felt as safe as we could be. Very well social distance from other guests and we could feel good airflow sow ventilation was also apparent. Our festive meal was pre-booked and arrived without hitch. We have been several times before and always had excellent food. This time was no exception. There were obviously some staff shortages but this did delay the service to any large extent so well done to the staff for making the visit enjoyable.

A lovely warm welcome, we didn't book but they found a perfect table next to a warm radiator. Great service from drinks through to recommendations for our meal. We had the children's roast dinner and my goodness! It was so tasty and the portions were huge. A great selection of drinks including orchard thieves cider (our favourite). Highly recommended*****

We ate he today, the food was excellent, very well presented, the service was good, that one in the black dress is cheeky...lol It was very enjoyable, and I have wrote more than one line.

I liked the pub and the welcome. It looked clean.Staff were friendly and helpful. Nice seated area with secluded table and seats for 4. Food was well presented, looked good. No issues with the food. I had prawn cocktail and scampi. These more than met expectations but for the thick chips which were slightly oily. Loos too were clean and fresh.

My family and I went on Xmas eve for the festive 3 course meal. Everything from start to finish was perfect! The food was absolutely delicious, well presented and definitely value for money! The service was just right, we didn't have to wait to long and they regularly came to offer drinks. The staff were exceptional. Especially 1 member of staff (she didn't give her name) we were struggling to get a taxi home. She kindly booked an Uber for us. When we offered to pay her back she refused to accept it. She wished us all a merry Christmas and said it's on her! This is he first time anyone has done an act of kindness for me. So thank you so much. I did ask if it was under new management as everything from the food and service was much better than last year. They said yes. This hadn't really been advertised much, I guess reviews are huge way forward to get plenty more customers.

We visit here once every other month or so and always enjoy the high standards of friendly hospitality and food. They have a reduced menu at the moment but we found that it was still plentiful and we quickly selected our meals without disappointment. Everything is always immaculate and there's loads of parking spaces right outside :)

Staff were great and friendly, food was amazing! Me and my partner both ordered the mixed grill and it was delicious. Also, 30% of grills on Thursdays is brilliant! Wasn’t sure where to go for tea and ended up here and so glad we chose to come.

Excellent service lots of smiles a real warm welcome. Staff had a great knowledge of what drinks were available reciting all flavours of ciders and gins available. The food was excellent a real hearty plateful. Super tasty Sunday lunch with a delicious dessert was enjoyed by all of us. I highly recommend a visit.

Very good welcome, quickly seated, plenty of choices on the menu. I was undecided but after the manager spoke with us, I was able to make a choice. I was happy with it. My wife chose a vegetarian option but was quite disappointed when it arrived, not much content and really quite poor. We spoke to the manager, who was very apologetic, and exchanged the dish for a new one. The replacement was a lot bigger portion and presentation. Also looking a lot fresher and better value for money.

Our meals arrived in good time with a decent break between courses. The children were very well catered for, as were the vegetarians in our party. The meals were tasty and reasonably priced and the staff very pleasant.

The staff are very welcoming. The food was excellent and very well presented. Nothing was to much trouble. The outside eating area was spotless as was inside. As one who normally lunches with the ladies, this is now at the top of our list of places to eat next. I will be recommending you to all my friends and family. Really really good place to eat.

Booked a table dinner at 5 on a Sunday. All of us wanted roasts. Unfortunately they'd ran out bar 1 portion which my wife has (popular dish, I could see why). So if you want a Sunday roast go early! I had the surf and turf with rump steak. Cooked to perfection! (Medium rare, not the easiest), peppercorn sauce was spot on too. For dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding. Couldn't fault it at all. So in all a 9.5 /10 rating. Foods spot on for price point Staff incredibly friendly and efficient Great atmosphere for a meet up or lunch out. I'll be returning soon.

A very enjoyable experience all round. Well cooked, hot food, excellent customer service. The pub might wish to consider extending the range of meals available on its fixed price (2 and 3 course) menu.

Lovely place, great service but just average food. The pies were good but not great, I had the cheese, leek and potatoe and it lacked flavour, the cabbage was dry, chips good and the desserts very rich

Called in here after a walk with friends and they found us a nice table. The waitress was so lovely, helpful and interesting. The food choice was great and everything was delicious. We will definitely be back.

The staff were pleasant and the atmosphere was really relaxed. Meal was lovely and was nice and hot. We didn't have to wait long for food to arrive from ordering. Will definitely visit again soon with friends and family.

We visit the Hoghton arms every few months as it is in a great central location for my group of friends . Upon arrival we were greeted by a lovely staff member named Samantha. Samantha's customer service and general engagement with the table throughout our time was exceptional! She was friendly, funny and attentive and her bubbly personality made us all comment on how refreshing it is to be served by a waiter that was genuinely happy to do her job. We were so impressed with Samantha's character that we all agreed she was the nicest server we had ever encountered! I really hope you could pass this positive feedback on to Samantha she really is an asset to your establishment. I hope we see her again on our next visit.

It was my son’s birthday meal and we brought a cake for him. The staff were amazing, very helpful (the waitress took our cake and then brought it over WITH the manager singing Happy Birthday!!) The food was delicious with a not too big menu which was nice. And with a 30% discount voucher we’d received, I’d say we had a great time and so did my son!!

Service was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Lovely atmosphere in the bar area. Amy, the waitress was very pleasant and chased our drinks up for us even though she was so busy.

The food was lovely and the waitress went beyond helping us. I suffer with the peanut allergy and she went out of her way to make sure the food I was eating was safe. I will highly recommend your business. Thank you for an enjoyable experience.

Starter mushroom soup very nice and piping hot. Mains steak and chips very disappointed. I like my steak blue. This steak was cold and full of fat. Peppercorn sauce very bland. I wouldn't recommend if i had just had the steak i wouldn't of returned. Melt in the middle chocolate cake to die for. Could of done with a bigger scoop of ice cream. To top and whole experience we was over charged by just under £6.00. Luckily i always check my bill once paid, for these two reasons i wouldn't recommend or return sorry.

We had lunch on a Saturday afternoon, plenty of tables available and we were seated and served very quickly. The service was brilliant and the waiting staff very polite. Dog friendly and delicious food. We will definitely be back.

Called in for Sunday lunch and was not dissapointed. Roast dinner was great with lashings of gravy. Plenty of meat, in fact we have taken some home for tomorrow's lunch. Landlord and staff very friendly. We will call again.
