Every time I am visiting Baltimore I take the opportunity to go around and sightseeing and take pictures of anything I find interested. If you like history this is a place you should visit. Baltimore: Holocaust Memorial - The Flame The Baltimore Holocaust Memorial, located at the intersection of Lombard and Gay Streets, was dedicated on October 6, 1997. Designed by Lynn Katzen and architect Jonathan Fishman, it replaced Arthur D. Valk's earlier Holocaust Memorial on the same site, built in 1980, which had become a haven for illicit activity. The two concrete monoliths that remain from the original memorial, as does Joseph Sheppard's sculpture, The Flame. The Flame, founded by Fonderia Massimo Del Chiaro, was executed in 1987 and dedicated on November 6, 1988. Commissioned by Jack and Jean Luskin and Melvin and Jeanne Berger, it criticized for its explicit and graphic details, for being commissioned outside normal channels, and because it was an add on to the existing Valk work. The 11-foot tall bronze sculptural group depicts a group of emaciated concentration camp inmates huddled together being consumed by a fire. It stands on a 6-foot by 6-foot cylindric black granite base.

To say it's a emotional place is an understatement. Simply standing there and reading some of the quotes of the survivors, makes it very sobering moment. I am glad that Baltimore is committed to educating people about the horrific nature of the Holocaust and more importantly the resilience and bravery of those who survived.

Beautiful and tragic. Whenever I think of the Holocaust memorial I just get really emotional. I feel my culture was attacked and as much as the world tried to snuff the Jewish culture from society from the Earth my people's spirits continue to push forward.

A stark reminder of a past tragedy, the Holocaust Memorial was a respectable tribute to what had happened. The sculpture itself is...morbid given its shape but what it is dedicated to, bit very well kept and whoever made it deserves all the praise in the world. I've seen some complaints about the area surrounding the Memorial and they are valid but the day I went it was cleaned up and no one bothered me. Seeing it fir free was nice to, something I can never complain about. I don't have much else to say, the Holocaust Memorial made me sad but I'm glad it's there for all to see. Pictures and video are of the Memorial itself and surrounding area.

Interesting, thought-provoking exhibit. They need to clean it up, though, especially the RR tracks at the end.

I stumbled on this while on a lunch break walk. It's a beautiful and peaceful spot but also very timely to highlight a spot like this. I love discovering this city.

Its one of the most symbolic/emotionally vexing of all the exibits ive visited, not only due to an franks story or my heritage, but of the deeply disturbing nature of a ara in history i pray the collective consensus remembers /learns from the mistakes their of.

A nice little memorial to remind us of what happens when people sit idle and let those with nefarious agendas have their way. However, it was a shame to see so much trash behind the monument. It looked like homeless people used it as a storage depot. It was also apparent that people or animals had relieved themselves beneath the edges of the East side of the monument. It had a strong smell of urine and there was some feces.

They humiliated my daughter who is neurodivergent in front of her entire class. When they told her to go she followed the boy in front of her and stepped behind the boy in the turnstile door so the lady called her out of line and made her go to the end of the line. Once inside another woman berated our entire group before any one even set foot in the museum. Even the adults felt scolded. None of it was necessary at all.

Beautiful memorial that is artfully and historically designed to give honor to those lost during the holocaust. However, the place could be better maintained with trash that accumulates and the water that collects under one of the monuments after a heavy rain.
