Good hotel for the area. Big old 1799 building, so it's got all the quirky layouts you would expect, as well as 222 years of wear and tear. Relatively well priced (relative to the area again). Reasonable breakfast, but nothing to write home about. Restaurant wasn't operating as chef was "unavailable" for two nights. My suspicion is they had [removed]. Loads of old charm, and a bar at the front, although it felt a bit disorganised and a bit run down in parts. Fairly quiet place in the last days of writing this. Good customer car park to the rear, but has a blind and narrow side entrance to watch for. Rented two rooms, each with double bed, ensuite, TV, kettle, tea/coffee, and the usual hotel paraphernalia. Both were easily good enough for travelling, but if your a bit of a dainty princess, you might have issues with little things. Hotel is right in the centre of Banbury, easy to walk around the town from, although that wasn't too impressive TBH.

Overall it was okay here. Very quiet which is a shame as its a nice location. I had the seabass and scallop risotto and it was very light and tasted absolutely perfect. Not sure how fresh it all is but it certainly tasted and appeared like it had been cooked especially for me. The service was very attentive (being the only customer I kind of expected it). My only negative is that there were a few chips on the floor and given how empty the place was, I would imagine they were there from the previous days service so the night clean was lacking.

A beautiful beer garden , colourful and green , it's great for relaxing or meeting up with friends. Breakfasts are fantastic and a reasonably priced menu with lots of choice.

My partner & I stayed at the Cromwell while we were visiting for the British Grand Prix and I absolutely loved it. We stayed in one of the garden rooms and yes the rooms were a bit outdated (but it’s a very old hotel), we had excellent cleaning ladies whose attention to detail was absolutely perfection. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. If we ever visit the UK again, we will have to come back!

We had a very quick pint here on Monday 14th August 2023 at around 7pm. The lady behind the bar was so lovely! Very polite and professional! 😊 We sat in the beautiful beer garden at the rear. As always, to me, great staff can make a place work and that's why I love giving shout - outs to great staff! And that's why I do what I do! 👍 😊 5 stars from Nigel & Claire 🙂

Just passed through Banbury tonight for a bite to eat but didn’t see this gem coming! What lovely food ! So reasonable! and staff couldn’t have done more for us. Beautiful building too

We stopped for lunch, only one portion of fish left so one of us had sausage and mash. The mash was sticky and stodgy the gravy was too thick and too brown. It took ages and the place was empty. Very run down and needing a refurb.

We have been coming here for a year as a place to meet and hold our work meetings. It’s a great location but what keeps us coming back are the amazing staff! So helpful, welcoming, accommodating and really make us feel valued. They can not do enough to make us comfortable. The food is always great but the service really couldn’t be any better. We will keep coming back!!

Had lunch today in the bar area, food was beautiful, well presented and more than plenty! The service was efficient and pleasant, our waiter was cheerful and the manager who showed us to our table was helpful, fantastic attention and very friendly, he helped our 95 year old mother down the steps and was gracious in his attitude, thank you all for making a simple lunch so memorable.

We got to the cromwell lodge and was welcomed by friendy staff who checked us in and told us all the details we needed to know. They asked if we would like a table for dinner booked and sorted all that out for us. We had a lovely meal, spent some time in the bar and went back to our room. The room was very clean and was beautifully decorated. The bed was super comfortable. The water was a great temp with a very nice deep bath. The morning we went down for breakfast, lots of fresh fruit and pastry, we ordered hot breakfasts too which was lovely. Check out was easy and fast. We found all the staff to be friendly, polite and super helpful. The mangerment team must be super proud of this amazing hotel and staff. Thank you all for a wonderful stay and we hope to be back again soon.

Ok, so this is a nice old pub with accommodation, rooms are ok, clean and fine. Food is okay too. But if they are going to have events on a Saturday night that go on until 11:15 then they really need to inform people prior to booking. Also although dog friendly they charge £10 per dog per night which is not really dog friendly.

We had food here on our way back from London to Manchester. It was a Green Kings pub but with a different menu. We waited quite a while for the food and had to ask about it, it came shortly afterwards, now the food was excellent, and my partner said it was the best Risotto she'd ever had, however the Manageress advised it was so long because it was cooked fresh, in way were all three of us at the table felt we was being scalded..... Second to this was us trying to apply a discount code that wasn't working, and again the same person talked to us like children almost.... very condescending in her customer service manor..... It's a shame because the food was brilliant and the place is lovely

My daughter had her wedding and reception here at the Cromwell on Saturday. A few of us stayed the whole weekend. And what a fantastic weekend it was. The management and staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The wedding singer pulled out at 7am. By 7.15 am, management had found us another great singer. The food was lovely, the rooms comfortable and clean.. I really can't thank you all enough. Highly recommended! Xx

Four of us had the sunday roast. The cabbage looked like it had just bn shredded. I would of preferred the roast potatoes more crunchy and brown, and a bit bigger. 1 of our party ordered the sausage and mash. When it arrived I was very shocked at the meal being served in a dish, the size of it was on the small size for an adult The staff seemed very busy, not sure if they were short on staff and that's why it was a bit of a wait for our food.

What a fantastic hotel the Cromwell is. We stayed there for two nights along with our dog. We were in one of the garden rooms which had just been redecorated. With regard to the garden, at the time of writing the garden furniture was undergoing a paint refresh. Very smart. The Cromwell is very handily situated for the town and popular landmarks. The new Manager, Lizzie, and her team of staff were brilliant. Very friendly and definitely customer focused. Nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant served honest food at realistic prices. The bar has a good selection of popular drinks. We will definitely use the Cromwell again when in the area.

Delicious food and wonderful service. Lizzie and the team at the hotel were extremely welcoming and friendly. Soft beds and the rooms clean but could do with a bit of TLC. Lizzie was a star sorting out our complicated booking which included 11 people and a dog.

I had our wedding reception here on Saturday evening. And what an amazing night we had. The food was really tasty (compliments to the chefs) the lady and gent on the bar kept our guests hydrated all evening and the atmosphere was just perfect. Massive thank you to lizzie and the team who made it a fantastic evening. The hotel room was lovely, very clean and had the biggest bed ever!

Really poor experience here. Stayed for one night on a weekend. We paid over £100 for a room that was incredibly basic and in desperate need of an update and refresh. The cost didn't get close to representing the state of the room which had such poor lighting, it felt like staying in a cave. Because it was the festive season our room opened immediately onto a marquee in the courtyard which was stacked with tables and chairs and seemed to be used as a dumping ground for furniture in preparation for Christmas parties. There were also what seemed like weeks worth of cigarette butts immediately outside our room door. We arrived for breakfast before 1000 and ended up leaving 40 min later when our meals still hadn't arrived (breakfast finished at 1030). The couple next to us had the same problem. When we asked where our breakfast was, we were told that "we normally stop serving at 1030, but I'll see what I can do". Tables weren't cleared after guests had left. The coffee served in the thermos flasks was probably the most rank-tasting instant coffee I've ever had! Whilst waiting 40 min for breakfast to not arrive, we had to listen to one member of staff telling off another member as they sat in the open bar doing their administrative work, next to the breakfast room. The same member of staff was constantly complaining if anyone came to her table, saying she wanted to be left alone to work. The idea of leaving and going somewhere private, away from guests, didn't seem to cross their mind. The staff, whilst friendly, seem to move through the hotel without any degree of urgency or professionalism. Most seem to not recognise the simple things that experienced hotel staff would see straight away. If I owned this hotel, I would be very worried. The management is shocking and this appears to be a hotel in rapid decline. I travel extensively in the UK and abroad and this is one of the worst hotels I've stayed in for quite some time. *Edit - shortly after my departure, the hotel staff reached out to me to discuss a refund. This was done proactively by them. Whilst it doesn't change the content of my review, it shows a positive attitude toward trying to resolve issues and was most welcome.

As a first time traveller to Banbury, on business, I was fortunate to have chosen Cromwell Lodge as my stay-over. Comfortable, clean, great Wifi, as well as a cozy bar and restaurant, where the dinner was brilliant. To start the next working day, I enjoyed a top class breakfast, with many options to choose from (I always appreciate the health conscious choices!). I would highly recommend the hotel and will surely be staying there on my next trip.

Great place for a private meeting over a coffee. Comfortable, nice decor, however marked less than I usually would as its lost its energy/ambience it used to have. It's hard to put into words ... but would be nice to see this more lively again.

Very British accomodations in the lovely centre on Banbury. Clean sheets, comfortable pillows. It's nice having the cattle with a big variety of teas, biscuits and even hot chocolate. The bathroom needs restyling, but the experience was overall nice. I would definitely come back. Staff was lovely.

A massive thank you to manager Lizzie and her great team for the fabulous experience we had at a recent event at the hotel. Our function room was clean and well laid out, and the hotel organised great entertainment. We chose the buffet option which was plentiful with a great variety of dishes. All staff members we came into contact with were friendly, helpful and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely recommend to others!

Room dated but I expected that. Nice place to stay with centre only a few minutes walk away. Staff pleasant and friendly. Breakfast well worth the stay. Will stay again if in the area.

Held our wedding reception at this venue in the back garden with the marquee. The staff were so friendly and the manageress Liz was fantastic, from helping with the preparations to overseeing the evening and the following morning. Made to feel incredibly welcome and some really nice touches of decorating the bridal suite for me and my new wife. Food was beyond expectations and the cookies were astonishing. Breakfast in the morning was hot and fresh and hit the spot perfectly. Even a cheeky meal the day before when doing the personal touches in the marquee was fantastic. Steak was cooked perfectly.

Stayed here for 3 nights, staff were all very friendly and welcoming, really lovely. Our room was spacious, and clean, bed very comfy. Great garden space, we didn't eat at the pub itself but it was busy which is always a great sign. We had breakfast each morning, good choice of hot food and continental, sadly the only downfall was the wait for breakfast each morning, one morning, the person serving us forgot to put our order through so we waited half an hour before it was even put through, the following morning we waited almost 45mins. This aside, the staff couldn't be more apologetic, it was explained they were short staffed and they were clearly genuinely sorry for the customers wait. These things happen. Other than that, there really is no complaints. And breakfast when we recieved it was hot and very tasty! We would return.
