sometimes it is nice to visit a museum in which you do not need to delve into information, but just see how the average family lived many years ago. What kind of furniture and garden they had, tools and places where they slept. Very nice staff and kind atmosphere. I was also pleasantly surprised that the museum is absolutely free, even for foreigners, this rarely happens in Thailand.

Beautiful World War II era house set among sprawling garden that has been converted to museum. Would recommend this place over Jim Thompson’s since you can actually see how middle class Thai family really lived during the time here. Very enthusiastic volunteers guiding you through the house, although the museum could use better signage overall. Free entry!

Bangkokian museum is a folk style house from the mid 20th century that has been converted into a museum after it was donated by the owner. The museum has 3 houses which showcase life in Bangkok back in the days. The first house is actually where the owner used to live. It shows the story of their life and have a well preserved collection of furnitures, ceramics, etc. The second house is a 2 storey wooden house that was used as a clinic. It has medical equipments that was originally used. The 3rd house showcase many knick knacks from back in the days. The museum is free admission, and have volunteers that will give explanations as well as the story about the museum and the family who owns it. To get here, it would be easier to take a taxi, but can also walk from Hua Lamphong BTS station.

Free entry and a great way to glimpse real everyday life in Thailand. The three houses have beautiful teak floors, for which you have to remove your shoes. They each have different artefacts. I particularly enjoyed the traditional Chinese calligraphy.

A charming museum comprised of a cluster of three houses built just as western architecture was being introduced to Thailand. The experience here was one of journeying in time and the volunteers who gave the tour of the houses were simply delightful people. Their eagerness and enthusiasm, and the original undisturbed architecture of the three homes made this an out-of-the way, low key visit well worth undertaking.

Certainly for me the most beautiful surprise of my 7 days spent in Bangkok. Free parking, free entrance, very clean toilet. Free guided tour organized by a group of volunteers, association which maintains this villa. I spent more 2 hours there to discover a lot of things. Ask why there is a horizontal bar at each window?

The private residence collects a lot of old and historical items of the past decades. There are a few volunteer guides who are very active and can walk you through each house with interesting facts and explanation. I'm impressed with the owner who decided to donate her private house as a museum for younger generation to learn from. If you come around the area, it's worth sparing one hour or so to explore the place. (Free entry)

Loved this museum. Entry is free and there are helpful quides. Unfortunately their English was so hard to understand i gave up eventually, but probably i just was unlucky. The atmosphere is similar to Jim Thompson house, in a sense that this is also a wooden mansion with a lovely serene garden. The atmosphere is wonderful, but English info panels are limited.

Nice quiet spot that showcases a beautiful old house and provides some insight into the development of Bangkok and the relationship with external countries through the years. The volunteer guides are lovely and make a big effort to explain everything, really welcoming!

(Translated by Google) Bangkok Museum Is a museum that gives the atmosphere like a real residence Because every piece of equipment on display Are all used by the host from the past Which has preserved the furniture The appliances are well maintained. Allowing us to feel the atmosphere of a city house in the era after World War 2 as well The area around the house is still shady of large trees. And the atmosphere of a hip wooden house in the past Bangkok Resident Museum doesn't have parking. Therefore traveling by public transport is probably the most convenient. But if wanting to bring a private car You can park your car in the alley as well. In addition, this museum has quite a few staff and volunteers. Sometimes the museum's front door is closed. It does not mean that it is not open for business. But is due to security reasons Because there are few personnel (Original)

Truly a "hidden gem" in the middle of one of the busiest areas of Bangkok. A house originally from northern Thailand it was dismantled and rebuilt in Bangkok in the 1960s. The exhibition gives detailed, but not too long, explanations of the life of the rural Lanna population of the north of Thailand. Guides in Thai, English, Spanish, Chinese.

This is the only “museum” in BKK that gave us both a great exhibition, together with the actual feeling of the topic it portrays: Bangkokian. Our tour guide - although didn’t speak much English - is the most energetic, passionate, friendly Bangkokian we met on our trip. She did a great job showing us the life of a mid class family in Bangkok back then and now. It’s less about history and timeline but more about style, tradition and way of living. The house is beautifully preserved and organized. The tour is free so I just cannot think of a reason why you would skip this, especially if you’re in love with Thai people.

A Free of Charge Museum - rich in history and memories of the late Suravadee’s loved ones - an educated upper middle class. Museums located in the heart of Bangrak District of the old commercial/ international area of Bangkok. The compound composes of 3 buildings; the main house, the clinic house and the commercial house with real utensils & furnitures on display. This place has been well preserved, thanks to the owner who dedicated the house to the public, we are able to experience life back in the early 1900s with several senior volunteers guides. Also there is a FREE Thai desserts workshop held from July-Sep, on the weekend. I recommend you find time & immense your self in this historical place😊 lastly, Thank you for keeping this place alive.

I had a good time visiting this free museum on a quiet street next to a lovely garden cafe. It was interesting exploring the house and seeing the photos and artifacts from this fascinating family. I’m so glad she donated the houses and land.

Interesting museum that shows three different buildings from colonial times. This site shows how the richer foreigners and locals used to live. It's unexpectedly free and has reasonable English explanations around the site. A recommend for someone looking for something slightly different which is not a temple

Visited on 13/10/2919 after church service, and loved the place! Felt like being in my own grandmother's house of the 1940s; feeling's different from seeing mere photos on the net. Glad the owner & family preserved memories of heritage and culture; a come-to-life family reunion at the garden would've completed my visit! Staff were very accommodating too. :-)

We loved it. It is easy to find and close to other attractions in the Ban Rak/Silom area. the admission was free. The guides were so friendly and helpful. I was accompanied as always by my Thai wife so much of our tour was in Thai, but they speak excellent English. The Bangkok Folk Museum is actually two Thai houses from circa 1937. They are beautiful have been well maintained in the original manner. The main house as you enter the grounds has the traditional visiting and living style spaces downstairs with living quarters for the family upstairs. The rooms are filled with beautiful antiques from the era and people who lived in the house(s). Between the two houses is an beautiful shaded garden with a large pond. The smaller house in the back was to be an office and clinic for the stepfather but he passed away before he could move in. It also has a nice collection of antique furnishings and medical items. There is another building located on the grounds. It is the Ban Rak local history museum and tells the story of the development of Ban Rak. The building contains family heirlooms, old collections, and many other interesting period items. There is even an old style Thai kitchen like my wife remembers from her grandmother's house. We spent a really nice afternoon here.

I have only positive things to say about this place. The volunteers at the museum are very kind and are able to explain the history of the place in English. Lots of very well preserved vintage everyday items you can see up close and personal. The owner of the place donated it to the public, and sadly has passed away 7 years ago, so the volunteers told me. She had no one to pass it on to. She had pets that won awards, which is adorable, their photos displayed on a drawer in the second building. The whole places consists of 3 buildings. One is the main house, second was used as a doctor’s office, by the father of the past owner. And the third building was first, apartments that were rented out, but then turned into a kitchen. If you are in Bangkok, this is a place you can visit, its free and its great to see how the people in the past went about their simple daily life.

Of all the museums in Bangkok I've never received such a warm welcome as with this place. Each of the three caretakers of the three houses wanted to take my photo (for tourism purposes) and explain a little of the history and contents of the house. In one of the buildings there are some interesting photos of what Bangkok looked like before the modern age of high rise buildings. The museum is free to visit, you just register your name and country at the entrance.

Another one of Bangkok's hidden gems, I think. It's just up the street from the Sukhumvit MRT station, and the museum provided some interesting insights to Lanna culture. It's 100 Baht to get in, and there's lots of information about early Thai traditions. Descriptions about the artifacts and displays are written in both Thai and English. You can see everything in an hour or two, but I've been back a few times just to enjoy the culture.

Nice place to know about the culture and history of native Thai's. You need to take ticket of 100 Bhat to see the place. It's not very big place just one house with nicely preserved house hold contents. In one shot you can just cover entire house in 10 minutes. But if like to spend time to know history of the place then it can take a while.

Beautiful to see how the Thai people used to leave and how there houses looked like. Great place to understand part of this great country's history. Very much recommended!

Very small but nice old Thai style building to visit, to understand the classic living way of Siam people. Very hard to keep such a peaceful place in CBD.

The museum is nice but very small. The wooden house is very well preserved, I took my time during the visit and I was done in 20 min. The garden is quiet but made of artificial grass. I read the library is very good but it was closed when I went. 100 BHT donation needed.

Interesting regarding lanna (north Thai) culture, but the various video and stated sound aspects don‘t exist/not working. Even the lighting had been turned off in some areas so not so great to view the museum side.

(Translated by Google) The contemporary Thai house is old but not very old. The appliances are hard to find. Think of the old days in the country. Saturday, Sunday to pick up cotton, pick, hang, hit, then roll and spin into long strands to weave clothes to the quilt .. keep for use when we married. Hehe. This tradition has no inheritance. Come to visit a lot, in the middle of Bangkok (Original)

(Translated by Google) An excellent museum on the life of Lanna, an ethnic North, and a heavenly place cut off from the roaring city, one has the impression of being elsewhere than in Bangkok. Opposite the Pullman on Soi Sukhumvit 21, the entrance is right next to the Siam Society. Very well made and interesting videos explain the making of this type of house and the life of this community. Many objects are presented with very detailed explanations in English. We go upstairs barefoot, pay attention to the head in the annex buildings. And lush garden. Tucked in behind Black Canyon coffee. Cute, historic house and some lovely artifacts and descriptions of Lanna (Chiang Mai and northern, I think) life back in the day. Also did a good job of providing insight to spiritual beliefs and cultural norms for that time. I wanted to like this more, but the displays felt pretty amateur and were kept up like noone still cares there. Shame, because with some updated signage, teak oil and elbow grease, it could be just as alive and inviting as the Nai Lert property.

Wanted to visit since long time so glad we finally went to see it. A group of three wooden houses in a beautiful garden setting. A lot to see - original furniture and household items, as well as library and medical instruments from the doctor who once lived here. All so nicely kept, very neat and clean. Also great exhibition of Bang Rak area with many old photos. The entry is free - donation is welcome. All the volunteers working there were so friendly and welcoming. If you are interested in history you should definitely visit.

Interesting to know how were the locals lives in the old days. No entrace fee, excellent staff, very clean place and many things to see, learn. It is also a perfect place for pictures. Right in the center, you can take a walk to here. All is good and a must see when you are in Bangkok. Recommended!

Had high expectations for this spot. Really just a middle class family home. Nothing interesting. Hyper attentive volunteer guides, overly excited to see you explore this banal piece of a local family’s in exciting history. Stayed for maybe 20 minutes, just not to be rude. About 15 minutes longer than necessary.

A small but surprisingly informative museum about Bangkok middle class people's lives in the past ~~ very friendly and welcoming ladies from Bangrak community who run the place. No entry fee, just buy some souvenirs to support the lovely ladies and their community

The museum showed me how different life was before electric fans & AC! Anyone who visits will better understand Thai architecture & culture -- and have more respect for those who practiced tropical medicine in difficult conditions (the first doctor who built the precious oldest wooden house died before it was finished). Volunteers were helpful & abundant on the rainy day I visited. Wonderful museum!

  • 5/5 Khanh V. 4 months ago on Google
All ladies there are lovely. The one in first house is specially funny. Thank you for great lady, the owner of the house, people can come visit for free and learn how Thai people live in the past.

This museum is a hidden gem, no tickets needed. Good place to know more about the past of Thailand. All voluntary staffs there are super friendly and welcoming. Just note that you have to take off your shoes during the visit, so wear something casual.
